Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) 2010 in Indian Institute of Science of Bangalore

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) 2010 in Indian Institute of Science of Bangalore

About IISc:
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was conceived as a ‘Research Institute’ or ‘University of Research’ by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, in the twilight years of the 19th century. A long period of almost thirteen years was to elapse from the initial conception in 1896 to the birth of the Institute on May 27, 1909. The early history of the Institute is a fascinating chapter in the story of higher education and scientific research in India. The cast of characters in the drama that led to the establishment of the Institute includes, in addition to its charismatic and generous founder J.N. Tata, figures from the pages of Indian history. There is Swami Vivekananda, whom J.N. Tata befriended on his famous voyage to the United States, the Maharaja of Mysore, Shri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and his mother then acting on his behalf, and Lord Curzon the Viceroy of India, whose first task on arrival on December 31, 1898 was to receive a draft proposal prepared by the Provisional Committee set up to plan the establishment of the Institute.

Detail:
The “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana” (KVPY) is a program started during 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to encourage students of Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up research careers in these areas. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented students with aptitude for research. This program strives to assist the students to realises their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is developed for research and growth in the country. Generous scholarship and contingency grant is provided (up to the Pre-Ph.D. level) to the selected students.

Eligibility:
These Fellowships are only for Indian Nationals studying in India. The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, offers attractive fellowships (Rs. 4000 to Rs. 7000 p.m) and contingency grants (Four months fellowship p.a) for students studying in Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Selection to the program takes into account academic excellence and demonstrated interest in pursuing research career. Selection procedures are different for SP (Basic Sciences) and SP (Medicine). PhD Studentship Biomedical Imaging 2010 in The University of Manchester in The School of Medicine at UK

PhD Studentship Biomedical Imaging 2010 in The University of Manchester in The School of Medicine at UK

About The School:
Medical teaching in Manchester began when Charles White founded the first modern hospital in the Manchester area, the Manchester Royal Infirmary, in 1752. He was followed by Joseph Jordan, who opened a School of Anatomy in 1814.

Detail:
The objective of this 4-year BBSRC Industrial CASE funded project is to establish a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) protocol to image awake animals without tight restraint. The project will attract an annual tax-free stipend (minimum of £16, 090) as well as providing full coverage of tuition fees and associated project costs. Due to commence October 2010, the project is open to UK/EU* nationals only due to the nature of the funding. Biomedical imaging has transformed our understanding of fundamental disease mechanisms, drug metabolisms and biomarker development for human application. The basis for such studies has often been experimental procedures involving the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) on animals. The vast majority of MRI studies in rodents have employed anaesthesia for restraint to avoid the image degradation expected in studies of awake animals. However, there remain significant concerns in the use of anaesthesia for restraint. Anaesthetics are xenobiotics whose metabolism can cause immunosuppression and potentially interfere with the metabolism of substances under study, such as potential drugs or toxins – thus confounding results

Eligibility:
Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a minimum upper-second honours degree (or equivalent) in either physics or the biological sciences. A Masters qualification in a similar area and previous MRI experience would be an advantage but not essential. Applicants must be UK/EU nationals as well as permanent residents of the UK since 1 September 2007.

Project:
This PhD project will seek to establish an MRI imaging protocol supporting the design of experiments involving awake animals. The protocol will investigate the design of animal holder devices, develop suitable MRI techniques to counteract physiological motion and create reconstruction algorithms that compensate for bulk motion. Underpinning all this will be a commitment to improve acclimatisation procedures to minimise animal stress during imaging capture. The protocol will be validated in-vivo and then applied to monitor disease progression in a variety of models. A specific area of focus will be an exploration of rat models of airway responsiveness following chronic exposure to allergens. Other imaging modalities (CT, PET) will also be applied.

Application Process:
Please direct applications in the following format to the project lead, Dr Peter Warn (peter.warn@manchester.ac.uk):
• A CV, including full details of all University course grades to date.
• Contact details for two academic or professional referees.
• A personal statement (750 words maximum) outlining your suitability for the study, what you hope to achieve from the PhD and your research experience to date.

Deadline: Any enquiries relating to the project and/or suitability should be directed to Dr Peter Warn at the address above. Applications are invited up to and including Friday 13 August 2010.

PostDoctoral Fellowship 2010 in Rehabillitation Robotics in Intelligent Assistive Technology and Systems Lab at Canada

About IATSL:
Intelligent Assistive Technology and Systems Lab (IATSL), located in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto. We are a multi-disciplinary group of researchers with backgrounds in engineering, computer science, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and gerontology. Our goal is to develop zero-effort technologies that are adaptive, flexible, and intelligent, to enable users to participate fully in their daily lives.

Detail:
The Intelligent Assistive Technology and Systems Lab (IATSL) invites applications to the position of Postdoctoral Fellow in Rehabilitation Robotics. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline in addition to relevant experience in a research environment. The start date is November 1, 2010, although an immediate start prefered.

The successful candidate will join a unique multi-disciplinary, multi-centre research team led by Dr. Alex Mihailidis (University of Toronto/TRI) that includes several bioengineers, computer scientists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, clinicians, and mechanical/electronic technicians. IATSL is affiliated with many prestigious institutions including the University of Toronto, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Funding and support comes from a variety of institutional partners, such as NSERC, CIHR, American Alzheimer Association, and the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Our research on rehab robotics is also supported by an industrial partner, Quanser Inc. This position will be co-supervised by Dr. Jesse Hoey at the University of Waterloo.

IATSL develops autonomous, intelligent computerised devices that can help people with disabilities live more independently. A major strength of our research program is the combination of basic science, computing principles, clinical research, and product design and development. Our research employs cutting edge technologies and computer techniques, such as stereo vision, partially observable Markov decision processes, and various artificial intelligence techniques.

Within this research, you will be expected to provide support for projects focusing on a wide variety of computer-driven assistive technologies and intelligent systems, with a primary focus on the development of an intelligent robotic platform that uses haptics and artificial intelligence to provide rehabilitation for stroke patients. This rehabilitation robot will be able to guide a patient through a variety of different exercises, using artificial intelligence to learn about the user’s progress, abilities, and preferences in order to adapt accordingly. The successful candidate will work with the research team to develop and clinically test a new robotic device, and to implement efficient real-time decision making and planning algorithms. The candidate will be responsible for assisting in the supervision of undergraduate and masters level students assigned to this project, as well as the development of the project as a whole.

The initial position will be a one-year contract, renewable based on performance and funding. Salary will be based on the applicant’s previous experience and education.
