PhD Scholarship on Relativistic Electrons in Electric Discharges at Technical University of Denmark

PhD scholarship on RELATIVISTIC ELECTRONS IN ELECTRIC DISCHARGES is available at DTU Space, Copenhagen, with start date September 1st 2010, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position, which is funded by The Danish Council for Independent Research | Natural Sciences, is related to a mission planned for the International Space Station: ‘The Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor’ (ASIM) for observations of extreme thunderstorms and their influence on the atmosphere. The project will study how electrons are accelerated to relativistic energies in electric discharges in the atmosphere. The question has been raised after the surprising observations from satellite of high-energy radiation from the atmosphere above powerful thunderstorms, and from lightning and laboratory discharges. The radiation is bremsstrahlung from electrons that are accelerated to unexpected high energies. The acceleration process is not well understood but is interesting because it influences the dynamics of the discharges and their effect on the atmosphere.

DTU Space has developed numerical methods to study the phenomenon with very high precision of the electron dynamics. These will be used to explore the conditions for electrons to reach high energies and their influence on the discharge dynamics. The simulations will be evaluated relative to measurements from laboratory experiments. The study will be conducted in collaboration with researchers at the Technical University of Eindhoven, Holland, and the Russian Federal Nuclear Center – VNIIEF, Sarov, Russia.

France: PhD Scholarship in Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing, FEMTO-ST, Besançon, FRANCE

Applications are invited for a three year PhD scholarship in the FEMTO-ST Institute (see www.femto-st.fr) and Laboratory of Mathematics both at Besançon FRANCE.

This Phd thesis will be dedicated to mathematical and numerical contributions in the fast growing area of Multiscale Modelling. More precisely, the candidate will establish a numerical method to implement a Multiscale Model of the wave equation that we have recently introduced. He will also extend the modelling, and the numerical implementation to other equations.

Our model relies on homogenization of the wave equation in a bounded periodic structure. Its presentation, its derivation and its mathematical justification are to be found in [1] and [2] for a short and an extended version respectively. Our technique is new and will lead to highly reduced computation time compared to direct simulation. We quote that there exists a strong need in many scientific and industrial areas to have reduced models for wave propagation phenomena in bounded domains.

In 2006, the National Research Foundation (NRF) in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DST) initiated the Research Infrastructure Support Programmes (RISP) Grants that support the acquisition, maintenance and development of state-of-the art research equipment. Two sub-programmes, the National Equipment Programme (NEP) and the National Nanotechnology Equipment Programme (NNEP) were established. In addition to these programmes, the need was identified for a strategic research infrastructure to support research focusing on the five grand challenges, Science and Technology missions and strategic research areas as identified in the National Research and Development strategy.

Programme Details:

The NEP is designed to improve the competitiveness of South African research and training by contributing to the improvement of research infrastructure, the expansion of research and training capacity and the promotion of national collaboration in line with identified research priorities. This equipment programme focuses on large and/or specialised equipment that will advance scientific research and train students to compete in a knowledge-based economy. Thus funding is considered for expensive multi-user equipment and equipment that will advance multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research. The applicant’s institution is required to contribute one-third towards the purchase price of the equipment.
The NNEP is dedicated to positioning South African research globally in the emerging areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology by promoting multi-disciplinary and inter-institutional research and human capacity development in the critical socioeconomic areas of Water, Energy, Health, Chemical and Bio-Processing, Mining and Minerals, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing. Equipment support under this programme is focused on equipment for characterisation, research and innovation.

The HESA/IBSA Trilateral Programme for cooperation in the field of Higher education for the year 2010 in South Africa

The National Research Foundation (NRF) offers The HESA/IBSA Trilateral Programme for cooperation in the field of Higher education for the year 2010 in South Africa

As established by the Brasilia Declaration, the main objective of IBSA is to increase collaboration between India, Brazil and South Africa to the mutual benefit of all three nations. As such the most important requirement of the proposal applications submitted in response to this call – apart from the excellence and future potential of the research to be conducted – is a clear demonstration of the joint nature of research activities, with teams from all three countries to constitute a consortium and each to be allocated an equal and necessary part of the work. At the same time this initiative funded by Higher Education South Africa (HESA), applications contributing to the national priorities of capacity building, equity and the redress of historical inequalities are encouraged, with the prime measure of such contribution being the involvement of a large number of students, particularly from historically disadvantaged socioeconomic population groups, and the participation of researchers from historically disadvantaged institutions, either as principal investigators or team members. In this regard networking activities should also be extended as far as possible to young researchers and future project leaders, so that the IBSA initiative as a whole will not begin and end with the current crop of experienced principal investigators.

Eligibility:

India, Brazil and South Africa Researchers.

PhD Studentship at the School of Chemical Science and Engineering, KTH, Sweden

The Division of Fibre Technology is looking for a Ph.D. candidate in Tailored fibres with unique joint-forming ability using a biomimetic approach

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 13,300 full-year undergraduate students, 1,500 postgraduate students and 3,900 employees.

The School of Chemical Science and Engineering includes the areas Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Fibre and Polymer technology. We focus on the principles for design, analysis and understanding of molecular systems plus their application on, for example, bioorganic materials, energy transformation processes, the environment and production of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. KTH Chemical Science and Engineering are one of the most active in research among technical faculties in Sweden and we are in the frontline within our areas. We also offer education as Master of Engineering and bachelor’s degree.

Research subject

The objective of the project is fiberbased products with unique mechanical properties. This should be met by tailoring the joint between the fibres so that the fibrous materials can tolerate a large strain during network preparation while being ductile/stiff/wet-strong in their final application. The scientific challenge will be to molecularly modify the cellulose-based fibres and fibrils in a well defined way to achieve the desired properties. Among other strategies, biomimicking will be used to adapt similar strategies as that used by mussel and Gecco-lizards that lead to extremely durable joints to slippery and flat surfaces both under wet and also dry conditions. The research area has a multidisciplinary character where physical chemistry is mixed both with biomechanics and solid mechanics.

The PhD student will be a member of BiMaC Innovation, a strategic research centre at KTH financed by the industry and Vinnova with the outspoken ambition to produce new and improved products from the wood raw material. One of the main strategies with the centre is to become a world leading biomaterials research centre by combining different generic sciences at the KTH campus such as solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, physical chemistry and fibre and polymer technology. The centre is now entering its second phase which means that the infrastructure for cooperation between the different schools at the KTH campus is already established. The PhD student in Fibre Technology will hence be member of a interdisciplinary team allowing for a more efficient development of new materials from the wood raw material.

Qualifications

MSc in Surface Chemistry/Surface Physics , Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or similar. Special qualifications in Fibre Technology, Surface and Colloid Science or Polymer Chemistry will be regarded as an advantage . An ambition and ability to improve the competence in solid mechanics ia also a prerequisite for the position and oral and written communication skills in English are also important.
Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities.

KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as concerns its gender structure.

Poland : International PhD Project: PHYSICS OF FUTURE QUANTUM-BASED INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES

Poland : International PhD Project: PHYSICS OF FUTURE QUANTUM-BASED INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES

    Sponsored Links

Quantum information theory is a rapidly developing branch of physics. There are, for example, safe communication protocols which exclude eavesdropping. Security of communication does not depend on the ingenuity od ciphering, it is due to the laws of nature -- principles of quantum mechanics, the rules of which are quite different from intuitively obvious laws of classical physics. Results of the current research allow us to hope that it will be possible to construct quantum computers with computational speeds considerably exceeding those of the contemporary computers.

The project has definitely scientific character. We plan to conduct fundamental and highly specialized research on the techniques of information manipulation by the methods stemming from principles of quantum mechanics.

Quantum entanglement plays essential role both in the theory and in experiment. The phenomenon of entanglement is known since Schroedinger times. Only recently it was realized that it is a fundamental resource of quantum information theory. Large part of the planned research will be devoted to further studies of entanglement both experimentally and theoretically. New methods to produce and detect the entangled states will be sought. This requires a close cooperation between theoreticians and experimentalists. This will be accomplished by wide collaboration with foreign laboratories which possess the "state of the art" most advanced equipment.

Another important goal is to investigate the properties of the entangled states which ensure the safe communication and information exchange. This is connected with the study of various correlations, frequently yet unknown and never existing in the realm of classical physics. Study of such correlations has practical implications in secure information transfer. They also have fundamental importance - in quantum probabilistic theory.

In must be remembered that every physical system interacts with its environment. Such interactions result in the decay of correlations. Since the latter are so essential the analysis of such decays needs to be investigated. Moreover, the ways to circumvent the losses due to the surrounding. It seems reasonable to say, that the number of questions
concerning quantum entanglement is indeed large.
Therefore the project addresses a multitude of problems. It is also possible that new developments will open completely new and unexpected vistas which will lead to fascinating new ideas and discoveries.

Last, but not least, the project has a distinctive experimental aspect. New materials are essential in new technologies and applications of quantum information theory. Production and detection of the entangled states is not easy. New, effective materials, hopefully with precisely tailored properties, will be synthesized and investigated. The purchase of new devices is planned to enhance the experimental capabilities

International Scholarships available at American University Washington, College of Law

International Scholarships available at American University Washington, College of Law
EducationUSA hosted a webchat on LL.M. Programs in the U.S on May 20, 2010. Rosie Edmond, Assistant Director of Admissions for the International Legal Studies Program (ILSP) at American University Washington College of Law answered questions regarding application procedures, scholarships, the bar exam and careers in law.

To find out more about full-tuition and other partial scholarships offered to international students, visit: www.wcl.american.edu/ilsp/scholarly_competitions.cfm

    *Highlights of the session:*

/Q: I'm Armenian by nationality I got a higher education (degree) in Armenia. Now I would like to apply for a scholarship for LL.M. programs in the U.S. Do I have any chances to get a scholarship? /
Rosie Edmond: Yes, you should apply to the Fulbright grant, but also check with the schools directly. Some (but not all) have scholarships for foreign lawyers. American University offers 5 full scholarships for our LL.M. in International Legal Studies.

/Q: What do you think makes applicants competitive for those 5 full scholarships available for an LL.M. at American?/
Rosie Edmond: Excellent writing skills because it is solely based on that. The scholarship requires the applicant to submit a 750 word essay on a major international legal issue and a 250 word essay on what that winner would do to give back to the Washington College of Law community. They use the essay to judge legal knowledge and writing skills.

/Q: I will apply for LL.M. programs in the USA this year. My goal is to receive the Magister Degree. I have a diploma of Specialist of Law with honors and some work experience. Do I need to pass a specific exam for LL.M. or just the TOEFL? What is the required score for TOEFL?/
Rosie Edmond: Most LL.M.s require the following: Application form, TOEFL/IELTS/ PTE, 2 letters of recommendation, transcripts and degree certification. American University requires 93 but other schools might be higher.

/Q: Greetings from Denmark. I would like to know how you view (or others you know of) work experience when applying for an LL.M.? Many Danish students want to go straight after their bachelors (first professional degree in Denmark). Can that be a problem? /
Rosie Edmond: That depends on the school and the program. For AU our LL.M. wants both recent grads and those with work experience in order to enhance the program's diversity. Some more business oriented programs may want applicants with more experience. Sorry this is not a one size fits all answer.

/Q: Greetings from Ukraine. I know that many universities in the USA require students to pass the LSAT. What is the required score for LSAT?/
Rosie Edmond: The LSAT is only required for JD programs and not for an LL.M. The top schools will only accept applicants in the 90% (Harvard, NYU, etc.) The highest score is 180.

/Q: As a European student, can you practice as a lawyer in the U.S. once you have completed an LL.M?/
Rosie Edmond: In order to practice law in the U.S., you need to pass the bar. Please note that each state has its own bar, so if you pass the bar in NY you can't practice in California. Also if your goal is to practice in the U.S., an LL.M. is not a shortcut. I suggest applying to a JD program. Many of our graduates, however, do pass the NY bar but end up working at the World Bank, IMF or other international organization or firm.
    /
Q: What kinds of internships do students do? Is it difficult for international students to find an internship?/
Rosie Edmond: As long as they are law related, a student can be an intern practically anywhere. Here in DC the opportunities are endless. We have placed students at the World Bank, IMF, OAS, embassies, and law firms. Most schools have a career office where students are given tools on how to market themselves.

/Q: I have learned about the WCL Summer Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law - is it connected in some way to the LL.M. Program?/
Also, are there scholarship available for this particular event? Does one have to attend WCL to be eligible for the Academy? Thank you. Rosie Edmond: Yes, the HR academy is connected, although admission is separate. The HR, International Arbitration and International Environmental law academies are independent from the LL.M. program, but are all part of WCL. They are open to practitioners, law students and professors. Students interested in pursuing an LL.M. can transfer up to 4 credits to the ILSP. The academies have their own scholarships, but the ILSP does offer special scholarships (for the LL.M.) for participants of these academies. The academy takes place here in DC but most of the professors are Human Rights experts from all over the world.
