OPEN SOCIETY FELLOWSHIP 2010 ? UK

The Open Society Fellowship Supports Individuals Seeking Innovative And Unconventional Approaches 2010 In UK

Introduction:
The Open Society Institute works to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. To achieve its mission, OSI seeks to shape public policies that assure greater fairness in political, legal, and economic systems and safeguard fundamental rights. On a local level, OSI implements a range of initiatives to advance justice, education, public health, and independent media. At the same time, OSI builds alliances across borders and continents on issues such as corruption and freedom of information. OSI places a high priority on protecting and improving the lives of people in marginalized communities

The Applicant:The Open Society Fellowship chooses its fellows from a diverse pool of applicants that includes journalists, activists, academics, and practitioners in a variety of fields. Applicants should possess a deep understanding of their chosen subject area and a track record of professional accomplishment. The fellowship seeks “idea entrepreneurs” from across the world who are ready to challenge conventional wisdom. Successful applicants will be eager to exploit the many resources offered by OSI and be prepared to engage constructively with the global OSI community. Ideal fellows are specialists who can see beyond the parochialisms of their field and possess the tenacity to complete a project of exceptional merit.

The Topic Of The Project:
The Open Society Institute works to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. Among OSI’s core areas of concern are human rights, government transparency, the promotion of civil society and social inclusion. Project themes should cut across these areas of interest. Applicants are encouraged to explore this website to acquaint themselves with the panoply of themes and geographic areas that fall within OSI’s purview. Below are some possible topic areas that fellows may explore in the coming years:
* Global migration and the rights of displaced minorities
* Organized crime, corruption, and state failure
* The economic crisis and its effect on open societies
* Movement-building and state repression in societies affected by climate change
* The impact of new technologies on citizen access to information and justice
* The link between governance, transparency, and economic development.
Open Society Fellows are currently investigating the corrosive effect of the global arms trade on democratic institutions, the challenges of community
organizing in rural America, and new techniques of outreach and communication with victims of mass atrocity. What these projects share is a zeal for problem -solving, the confidence to test hypotheses against observed reality, and an impatience with conventional or clichéd thinking.Applicants who are uncertain whether their topic fits within OSI’s organizational interests are invited to submit a brief letter of inquiry, accompanied by a CV, before proceeding with the online application process. That letter of inquiry should be addressed to: OSFellows@sorosny.org.

The Work Product;
Successful projects should push the boundaries of current thinking and carry lessons that can be applied to a variety of settings. Applicants should carefully consider the impact they want their work to have and the audiences they wish to reach. They should then think creatively about the activities and work products that will reach these audiences most effectively.Fellows may produce a variety of work products, including publications such as books, reports, or blogs; innovative public-education projects; or the launch of new campaigns or organizations. They may also engage in activities such as hosting panel discussions, traveling to conferences, participating in policy debates, and aggressively promoting their ideas in public venues.Fellowship projects can include photography, outreach and advocacy around documentary film, and other forms of cultural production. Applicants in the arts must demonstrate rigorous and original thinking about the nexus of cultural expression and social change.

Fellowship Expectations:
At the heart of the fellowship is the Open Society Institute itself. Fellows are invited to join the rich and diverse OSI community, a global network of activists and institutions dedicated to defending civil society and improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable citizens.Fellows are expected to take full advantage of OSI’s expansive reach and work to bring new people and fresh ideas into the organization’s ambit. The program anticipates that most fellows will spend a portion of their fellowship term at one of the organization’s main offices, in New York, Washington, London, Brussels, or Budapest, or at an OSI regional foundation. While in residence, they are strongly encouraged to organize and participate in conferences and program events and may be asked to run a seminar involving OSI staff and outside colleagues. Ultimately, fellows should sharpen the organization’s thinking, question its assumptions, and broaden its understanding of pivotal political and social problems. In order to facilitate these interactions, proficiency in spoken English is required.

Fellowship Placement And Term:
OSI considers applicants from all parts of the world. Most fellows spend a portion of their term in one or more OSI offices. Fellows may work out of multiple OSI offices during their term.Fellows who wish to work on their project in a country in which they do not have citizenship must satisfy and comply with applicable visa requirements. OSI helps fellows obtain necessary visas and covers all associated costs.Fellowships are awarded for one year. In some cases OSI considers requests for shorter or longer durations. Preference is given to applications for full-time fellowships, but OSI also considers applicants who can only work part-time on their projects.

Fellowship Support:
For a full-time fellow based in the U.S., the stipend ranges from $60,000 to $100,000. For fellows based in other countries, appropriate adjustments will be made to reflect the economic circumstances and costs of living in those countries. Stipends are based on several factors including work experience, seniority, prior earnings, and the proportion of time committed to the fellowship. The stipend does not necessarily equal the applicant’s current salary. In certain cases, fellows will receive additional financial support to enable them to meet the residency expectation. In most cases, OSI provides fellows with communications support to convey their work to a broader audience and influence current debates. OSI also integrates fellows into its networks of individual and organizational partners and grantees.OSI may cover additional project expenses such as travel (including airfare and hotel), visa costs, part-time research assistance, conference fees and health insurance. Fellowship expenses should not include operational or programmatic costs, such as employees and physical infrastructure. The purpose of the fellowship is to support individual fellows; therefore OSI will only cover individual expenses. The fellowship does not fund enrollment for degree or non-degree study at academic institutions, including dissertation research. Please note that under federal tax rules applicable to U.S. private foundations, OSI cannot support lobbying activities. Projects that include lobbying activities will not be funded. If you’re unsure whether your project activities constitute lobbying, please review the Tax Law Lobbying Rules before submitting an application.

Application And Selection:
All interested applicants should complete the online application form at http://ping.fm/Mo6LZ and submit supporting materials for consideration. Please read the FAQs before applying. Applicants may submit a project proposal or other materials in a language other than English, as long as they also submit an English translation. Certified translations are strongly recommended.Once the initial information has been entered, applicants receive login details and an ID number that allows them to make additions and revisions to the form until materials are submitted. The American Academy In Berlin Invites Applications For Its Residential Fellowships On A Yearly Basis 2010

Around two dozen Berlin Prizes are conferred annually. Past Berlin Prize recipients have included historians, economists, poets, art historians, journalists, legal scholars, anthropologists, musicologists, public policy experts, and writers, among others. The Academy does not accept project proposals in mathematics and the hard sciences. In addition to placing a high priority on the independent work of its fellows, the Academy is in a unique position to aid fellows in establishing professional and general networks both in Berlin and beyond. The Academy’s public outreach, which facilitates the introduction of a fellow’s work to a wideraudience, serves its mission of fostering transatlantic ties through cultural exchange.Fellowships are typically awarded for an academic semester or, in some cases, for an entire academic year. Only the Bosch Fellowships in Public Policy may be for shorter stays of six to eight weeks.Fellowship benefits include round-trip airfare, housing at the Academy, partial board, and a stipend of $5,000 per month. The Academy’s furnished apartments at the Hans Arnhold Center are suitable for individuals and couples; limited accommodations are available for families with children. All fellows are expected to reside at the Hans Arnhold Center during the entire term of the award.Fellowships are restricted to candidates who are based permanently in the US (US citizenship is not required and American expatriates are not eligible.) Candidates in academic disciplines must have completed a doctorate at the time of application. The Academy gives priority to the scholarly merit and significance of the proposal rather than the project’s specific relevance to Germany. Although it is helpful to explain how a Berlin residency might contribute to the project’s further development, candidates need not be working on German topics. The selection process for the Guna S. Mundheim Berlin Prize in the Visual Arts is based on nomination rather than application. A small number of invited candidates will be considered by an independent international arts jury. Please see below for information regarding the Berlin Prize in Music Composition.

Eligibility:
Fellowships are restricted to candidates based permanently in the US. Limited periods spent outside the US, such as sabbatical, foreign assignment for
American publications, etc., must be explained on the application. US citizenship is not required, and American expatriates are not eligible.Candidates in academic disciplines are expected to have completed a doctorate at the time of application. Applicants working in most other fields – such as journalism, filmmaking, or public policy – must have equivalent professional degrees. Although it is helpful to explain how a Berlin residency would contribute to further professional development, candidates need not be working on German topics. At this time, the Academy does not accept project proposals in mathematics or the hard sciences.

How To Apply:
The Academy does not accept applications from visual artists. The competition for the Guna S. Mundheim Fellowship in the Visual Arts is based solely on nomination. Each year a small number of candidates (ca. 12-15) are contacted individually by members of the Visual Arts Jury, whose names are disclosed only following the competition. While there are no foreseeable plans to hold an open competition, you are welcome to consult our website during future application cycles for any changes in this policy.

Berlin Prize In Music Composition:
The American Academy in Berlin is accepting applications from composers for the 2012 Berlin Prize in Music Composition until October 1, 2010.
A successful residency in Berlin can have significant impact on the visibility and career opportunities of composers upon their return to the US. Composer’s ProfileThe Academy wishes to support an early to mid-career composer. Applicants must show significant professional activity as demonstrated by public performances, commissions, and awards.

PhD Studentship - Optical Measurement of Precision Surfaces (based at Loughborough University)

Deadline: 3 Sept 2010

This studentship is sponsored by the National Physical Laboratory (UK's national
measurement standard Lab.) & Taylor Hobson Ltd (http://ping.fm/6CN6h -
UK's primary high precision measurement equipment manufacturer). The studentship
is also open for non EU/UK applicants.

PhD Studentship - Optical Measurement of Precision Surfaces (based at Loughborough University)
Loughborough University - Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

A postgraduate studentship is available to investigate new methods to increase the capability of optical interferometry and to introduce new levels of traceability in the measurement of precision engineering surfaces.

With the lateral resolution of a few micrometres and an axial resolution of a few nanometres interferometery is becoming an increasingly popular means to characterise engineering surfaces. As a non-contacting technique, commercial interferometers make an indirect estimate of surface form deduced from measurements of the light scattered from the surface. Due to the complex interaction between light and rough surfaces anomalous behaviour can occur and, for this reason, traditional contacting methods making more direct measurements using stylus-based instrumentation remain the basis of international (ISO) surface standards. The purpose of this project is to develop optimisation strategies based on new, more sophisticated surface scattering models to increase measurement capability and to estimate uncertainty in optical interferometers.

The project is sponsored by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Taylor Hobson Ltd. It is expected that the student will spend some time at one or both of the industrial partners' premises.

A first degree (First class or High 2:1 honours) in the physical sciences or mathematics is required and an interest in optics would be an advantage. Strong analysis skills and proficiency in numerical computing are essential and experience of optimisation techniques would be an advantage.

The preferred starting dates are 1 October 2010 or 1 December 2010 and the studentship will have a stipend of £8,000-£11,500 per annum, tax free, plus tuition fees. This studentship is open to UK/EU and international students.

New Erasmus Mundus Masters Course on Flood Risk Management with UNESCO-IHE Delft

On 13 July 2010, the Erasmus Mundus Grant Committe has selected UNESCO-IHE's proposal on a new Masters Course on Flood Risk Management for funding under the 2010 Erasmus Mundus Action 1 Call for proposal. The new Masters Course will be offered in collaboration with the Technical University of Dresden (Germany), Technical University of Catalonia (Spain) and University of Ljubljana (Slovenia).

Integrated flood risk management aims to reduce the human and socio-economic losses caused by flooding while at the same time taking into account the social, economic, and ecological benefits from floods and the use of flood plains or coastal zones. The need for the adoption of a holistic integrated approach to managing flood risks has been reflected in the Flood Directive of the European Parliament. Existing Masters programmes on floods offered at EU cover many technical aspects but lack integration. The programme follows the holistic approach and is explicitly designed to cover a wide range of topics - from drivers and natural processes to models, decisions and socio-economic consequences and institutional environment, and is therefore an important advance in water education for Europe.

The Erasmus Mundus Masters Course on Flood risk management is offered by the consortium consisting of UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (the Netherlands), the Technical University of Dresden (Germany), the Technical University of Catalonia (Spain) and the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). The associated members include European hydraulics laboratories, namely, DHI (Denmark), Deltares and HR Wallingford (UK), and from key national organisations responsible for flood management, including Rijkswaterstaat (the Netherlands). ICHARM (Japan), and three organisations from Bangladesh are associated members as well. All these partners bring their specific complementary expertise in flood risk management to the EMMC, which graduates educated flood risk professionals with a broad vision of the processes occurring in river basins and in coastal zones at different spatial and temporal scales, and who can master the links between systems, processes and natural and socio-economic constraints for all the aspects of the water cycle.

During the 2-year programme students start at the Technical University of Dresden, where they complete their first semester with 30 ECTS with courses on hydro-meteorological processes, global change and its impact, flood risk management and GIS. Then the students move to UNESCO-IHE for their 2nd semester with 30 ECTS where they receive courses on modelling for planning, forecasting, control and decision support, hazard mapping, ICT, and fluvial flooding and urban flood disasters. Subsequently, the students move to the Technical University of Catalonia to follow part of their 3rd semester with 20 ECTS with courses on hazards due to flash floods, debris flow, coastal flooding, and climate change. The last part of the 3rd semester is hosted by the University of Ljubljana where students follow courses on spatial planning, and socio-economic and institutional framework of flood risk management to earn 10 ECTS. Each semester provides a number of electives, and there are international fieldtrips. Finally, the students carry out their thesis work (30 ECTS) at one of HIEs or with an industrial partner. Successful candidates receive MSc degrees from the Technical University of Dresden, UNESCO-IHE and the Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona.

Scholarships at Yokohama National University: Infrastructure management

Scholarships at Yokohama National University
Yokohama National University has for many years been instrumental in providing university graduates with opportunities to further their post-graduate work.

The University’s special emphasis on the promotion of international exchanges with overseas universities has been stimulated by the role of Yokohama, a major port and the second largest city in Japan, as a point of contact with other countries. Yokohama is the vibrant heart of a civilization which has received direct influence from the West and then integrated these influences into the development of present-day Japan.

The City of Yokohama has a well-developed infrastructure network. Because of its central location, Yokohama has had excellent access to theoretical and practical information available through various international agencies of the government, and Yokohama National University has been closely involved in issues of infrastructure management. Much of this experience and knowledge is applicable to the infrastructure development needs of developing countries.

The Infrastructure Management Program is formally administered by the International Graduate School of Social Sciences’ International and Business Law Department, but it is in fact jointly planned and conducted by all of YNU’s graduate schools. The Australian Museum Postdoctoral Fellowships 2011

Overview
The Australian Museum offers three fellowships for 2011 to early-career postdoctoral researchers who will conduct original, field-intensive marine research at Lizard Island.

Background
The Isobel Bennett Marine Biology Fellowship, the John and Laurine Proud Fellowship and the Yulgilbar Foundation Fellowship provide financial support for research at the Lizard Island Research Station by researchers whose PhD degree was awarded within the past five years. Each provides up to AUD $11,000 for field expenses to be spent within one year. The fellowships do not provide salary.

Fellows make substantial original contributions to coral reef science that are consistent with the Australian Museum`s Scientific Research Strategy. The fellowships are intended to stimulate scientific benefits in addition to the research outcomes through collaborations, research training, and contributing to larger projects.

The Isobel Bennett Marine Biology Fellowship is named in recognition of the late Dr Isobel Bennett who was one of Australia`s eminent marine biologists. The Hermon Slade Raiatea Foundation has provided funding to the Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation (LIRRF) to enable thisfellowship.

The John and Laurine Proud Fellowship is named in recognition of the late Sir John Proud and his late wife, Lady Laurine Proud. Sir John was the founder of the Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation and a long-term passionate supporter of the Research Station. Lady Proud continued her support after the death of her husband. Their estate now supports thisfellowship through the LIRRF.

The Yulgilbar Foundation Fellowship is named in recognition of the funding by The Yulgilbar Foundation through the LIRRF. The Yulgilbar Foundation has also supported the capital upgrade program of the Lizard Island Research Station.

A single application will be considered for the three Fellowships.

Benefits
The maximum value of each 2011 fellowship is AU$11,000, payable in April 2011 and to be spent within one year. For successful applicants who are employed at Australian institutions and who can thus provide Australian tax invoices, the payments will be $11,000 plus $1,100 GST.

Conditions of Award
Fellowship funds are intended to contribute towards the costs involved in conducting field work at Lizard Island Research Station. Salary and equipment (other than consumables) are not covered by the Fellowships.

Expenditure of Fellowship funds is restricted to:
Bench fees at Lizard Island Research Station for the fellow and up to two assistants at the current applicable rates. Bench fees must be paid from a different source for any accompanying postgraduate students who are working on their own projects. The John and Laurine Proud Fellowship and the Yulgilbar Fellowship allow for economy class travel between the fellow`s home institution and Lizard Island, for one trip only.

The Isobel Bennett Marine Biology Fellowship allows applicants who are based at an Australian institution to claim for travel between that location and Lizard Island via Cairns but overseas applicants may claim only for travel between Cairns and Lizard Island. In both cases, travel for only a single trip may be claimed.

Additional research expenses incurred at Lizard Island. These may include freight charges for food and equipment between Cairns to Lizard Island, communications, use of a larger boat for work at reefs away from the Lizard Island group, research consumables etc.

Field work must take place between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2012.

The fellow is required to make an oral presentation about the research during a field trip at Lizard Island.

A report outlining progress of the project must be submitted within 30 days of the end of the fellowship year, that is, by 30 April 2012. The report must include details of expenditure of the fellowship funds.

Any funds unspent at the end of March 2012 must be returned to LIRS unless the LIRS directors approve carry-over arrangements.

If carry-over arrangements are approved, a concise final report must also be provided within 30 days of the final field trip.

Publications arising from the research must provide appropriate recognition of the fellowship, the funding source and the facilities provided by the Australian Museum`s Lizard Island Research Station.

Project description
The Amager Project is a study of the use of language in the lived lives of late modern urban individuals, represented by poly-lingual children and adolescents in Copenhagen, Denmark. We understand language as the means by which individuals form their understanding of the world, their personalities, and more than anything else their social relations. Our project studies the varied linguistic behavior of grade school students in their different everyday contexts with the aim of describing how individuals develop and shape their identities, their realities, and their social relations, and what opportunities and impediments they meet. The project has the character of basic research in this respect. Furthermore, our project has an applied aspect in the concentration on linguistic minority members and their everydaylanguage behavior.

PhD research project
The work of the PhD student will consist of carrying out the Danish parts of the IDI4MES project and to formulate and carry out her or his personal project under the IDI4MES umbrella which is a co-operation between the Universities of Stockholm, Tilburg, Birmingham, and Copenhagen. Erasmus Mundus Masters Course Scholarship on Flood Risk Management at UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education

On 13 July 2010, the Erasmus Mundus Grant Committe has selected UNESCO-IHE’s proposal on a new Masters Course on Flood Risk Management for funding under the 2010 Erasmus Mundus Action 1 Call for proposal.

The programme follows the holistic approach and is explicitly designed to cover a wide range of topics – from drivers and natural processes to models, decisions and socio-economic consequences and institutional environment, and is therefore an important advance in water education for Europe.
