PhD Student Position in Energy and Environment: Climate Policy Modeling, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

The Department of Energy and Environment conducts superior research and education in energy and sustainable development, at the global scale down to the industrial, building, and product level. Our focus is on experimental and theoretical energy technology research, as well as development, use, and evaluation of methods and tools for analysis of technology systems. In total, 150 individuals work in the department’s six divisions.

The doctoral position is in the Physical Resource Theory division. Physical Resource Theory encompasses theories, models, and methods to describe the metabolism of energy and materials in social and natural systems, in physical and economics terms. For instance, we develop models to characterize how current and future use of energy and materials can develop toward a reduced environmental impact.

Job description

Climate change is one of the world’s most widely discussed global challenges. In order to assess the effectiveness of climate policies and the impact such polices have on emissions and technology choices modeling tools can be very useful.

In this position you will develop and use models to analyze energy and climate policy relevant research issues. You will start with analyzing the interaction between local/regional air pollution and climate change. There is a potential for large gains if policies aimed at targeting these problems could be better coordinated. An important step to make such coordination effective is to better understand and quantify the climate impacts of pollutants that are traditionally not considered in climate policies, for instance, soot or carbon monoxide. Such emissions are comparatively large in many developing regions of the world, and reducing them would generate important local benefits as well as decrease global warming. The modeling tools that will be covered within this position stretch from simple climate models to economic optimization models.

Doctoral positions include doctoral studies leading to the doctoral degree, the equivalent of four full-time years of study, including research, course work, and participation in seminars and conferences. The position may be held for no more than five years and includes 20% teaching and other departmental duties.

Required qualifications

Applicants must hold a post-secondary degree equivalent to at least 240 credits in the Swedish higher education system (preferably obtained within the past five years) with a technical/ natural science focus, including a thesis project equivalent to at least 30 such credits. Post-secondary concentration should be in a field relevant to the applicable research area. Knowledge about economics and experience of modeling are considered additional qualifications. Applicants should have the general aptitude determined necessary to complete the doctoral education.

Doctoral and masters level courses are typically taught in English, lower level courses are taught in Swedish. Solid language skills are essential.

Application procedure

The application shall be written in English and include the following items:

An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position
Attested copies of education certificates, including grade reports and other documents
Curriculum Vitae
Letters of recommendation and name of reference persons (optional)
The application shall be sent electronically as pdf or zipped documents. Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form.

If any material is not available electronically or cannot be transferred to pdf format, the material can be sent as a hard copy to Registrar. The applicants name and the reference number (2010/147) must be written on the first page of the application.

National Science Foundation?s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) 2011 in USA

National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) 2011 in USA

About Foundation:
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is the country’s oldest graduate fellowship program that directly supports graduate students in various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. In March 1951, Alan T. Waterman, the chief scientist at the Office of Naval Research was appointed by President Truman to become the first Director of the National Science Foundation. Waterman defined the Foundation’s policy role as “one of advocating a research support program, improving government-university relations, and compiling reliable information on scientific research and manpower.” In 1951, Congress appropriated only $151,000 for the agency to start administrative operations. Very early on, the Foundation created the Division of Graduate Education (DGE), to be responsible for fellowships and scholarships for graduate students and postdoctoral scientists. The GRFP was established early in the foundation’s history, to encourage the best basic research and ensure a comprehensive research program.

Detail:
The National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) helps ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and reinforces its diversity. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in the U.S. and abroad. The NSF welcomes applications from all qualified students and strongly encourages under-represented populations, including women, under-represented racial and ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities, to apply for this fellowship.
As the oldest graduate fellowship of its kind, the GRFP has a long history of selecting recipients who achieve high levels of success in their future academic and professional careers. The reputation of the GRFP follows recipients and often helps them become life-long leaders that contribute significantly to both scientific innovation and teaching. Past fellows include numerous Nobel Prize winners, U.S. Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, Google founder, Sergey Brin and Freakonomics co-author, Steven Levitt.

Criteria:
NSF Fellows are anticipated to become knowledge experts who can contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in science and engineering. These individuals are crucial to maintaining and advancing the nation’s technological infrastructure and national security as well as contributing to the economic well-being of society at large.
So that the nation can build fully upon the strength and creativity of a diverse society, the Foundation welcomes applications from all qualified individuals. Women, under-represented minorites and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Those with disabilities are additionally accommodated by the Foundation to provide for the most successful graduate experience possible.
The fellowship is competitive, and those planning to apply should devote a sincere effort to their application. See the Tips for Applying section for more information.

Stipend:
Fellows share in the prestige and opportunities that become available when they are selected. Fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $30,000 along with a $10,500 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees, opportunities for international research and professional development, and the freedom to conduct their own research at any accredited U.S. institution of graduate education they choose.

Michael Moran Scholarship 2011 in in University of glamorgan of UK

Michael Moran Scholarship 2011 in in University of glamorgan of UK

About University:
The University of Glamorgan will be recognised as an international university with a distinctive approach to research, innovation and the student experience

Detail:
The Michael Moran Scholarship was launched to celebrate the life of a very special man; he was loved and adored by his family, admired and respected by his peers and feared by his foes. Michael’s greatest quality was his ability to give unselfishly, which he did for the promotion and celebration of Wales and Welsh food in particular. Michael Moran was a true champion of the Welsh food manufacture being at home in the boardrooms across London, the Food Fairs across the UK or at the Food Expo’s throughout Europe.
Michael was immensely proud of the fine education, marketing and sales oriented training he received during his early days with the Nestle Company at their Rashleigh School. He would have been very proud to support local students through a similar education and apprenticeship at his local Business Centre at the University of Glamorgan, in Pontypridd.
Thus, the Michael Moran Scholarship has been launched to celebrate Michael Moran’s contribution to the Welsh Food Industry and Welsh business in general. The sole aim of the Michael Moran Scholarship is to offer support to talented, local people during the rigours of a three year degree.
The Michael Moran Scholarship has funding available to ensure that selected students enjoy the very best that education can offer; thus taking this Business Excellence on into their working life, for the good of Welsh business and Welsh life in general.

Criteria:
Potentially eligible applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered:
1. Applicants must enrol on an eligible course. Eligible course is defined as all BA/BSc honours degrees offered solely via the Business School.
2. Must be eligible to receive student financial support from the UK government. (This ensures providing a scholarship to someone who is financially viable for the duration of the course.)

The successful candidate must agree to work closely with the Trustees to achieve the targets below:
* The Trustees expect the student to undertake work placements during their scholarship.
* Must spend their placement working for a business in Wales.
* Must intend to use the course outputs to better the Welsh economy.
* Must agree to mentor future Michael Moran Scholarship students.
* Must achieve an acceptable level of attendance and performance on the course.

Award: Recipients of the award will be paid £1,500 per year for the duration of their three year course.

PhD Position available: Knowledge and Capacity Development in the Water Sector

PhD Position available: Knowledge and Capacity Development in the Water Sector
UNESCO-IHE has a permanent staff of 160, of which 90 are scientific staff, while about 250 guest-lecturers from academia and industry contribute to the educational programme. Each year 750 participants (incl. about 200 new MSc students per year) from all over the world attend the various regular and short courses at UNESCO-IHE.

The Department of Hydroinformatics and Knowledge Management (HIKM) has a Core that is engaged in the study and application of Knowledge and Capacity Development (KCD). Current research concerns the modes of knowledge sharing in water resources, the capacity in government and the civil service system, and the access to the global knowledge pool through formal and informal learning processes and networks.
The vacancy is part of a new initiative to study how the effectiveness of KCD can be increased, and to help mainstream research outcomes in policy on international development. This effort is financed by the Netherlands government. For the Department we are looking for a Junior Researcher, Knowledge and Capacity Development in the Water Sector (m/f).

Responsibilities

As part of the KCD team, the (full time) researcher will conduct an academically rigorous study over about 4 years on the relationship between the capacity of the water sector and the sector’s performance in service delivery and water resource management, in about 6 countries, in a transversal analysis. The methodology will be based on the experiences and tools developed by the team and by other research groups. The approach in the study will include the selection of representative case studies, of which the development and performance will be the KCD activities and programs, the collection of quantitative data and information as well as narratives, and the comparative analysis of the KCD development dynamics in relation to KCD initiatives and programs. The study will establish a method to analyze the modes in which KCD affects the capacity and performance of the main organizations of the sub-sector, and how it helps to achieve benchmarks that are to be determined by the study.

The outputs of the study include (i) a set of peer-reviewed publications that are to be of adequate quality to allow the researcher to obtain his/her Doctor degree under Dutch law, and (ii) elaborate guidelines, and building blocks for KCD action plans and policy inputs that are relevant for international development. The researcher will, beside his/her research, prepare policy documents and reports to disseminate the results and recommendations, and will participate in relevant workshops and forums. In addition, he/she will prepare and give classes at post-graduate level for international course participants, and over time take leadership in the development of new educational programs. He/she will be staff member of the Core on KCD and work under the supervision of the Professor/Chair of KCD.

Requirements and Competencies
The candidate will:

Have an education at MSc level or equivalent in water or water resources sciences or engineering, or in relevant social or economic sciences. Combination of degrees would create a special advantage. He/she should qualify for acceptance into a PhD programme under Dutch academic regulations.

Have professional experience of at least three years in a related field in a utility, in a consultancy, government agency, or similar organization, and/or in a research environment. Experience with developing countries will be considered especially valuable.

Be proficient in English, also for writing scientific papers, and, preferable, policy reports.

Be able to work in a team and contribute to the teamwork.

Bring a constructive attitude, and enthusiasm for the goal of knowledge management and international development.

Open Society Fellowships 2011, DL 07.09 || 17.01.2011

Fellowship Guidelines

The Open Society Fellowship supports individuals seeking innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental open society challenges. The fellowship funds work that will enrich public understanding of those challenges and stimulate far-reaching and probing conversations within the Open Society Institute and in the world.

A fellowship project might identify a problem that has not previously been recognized, develop new policy ideas to address familiar problems, or offer a new advocacy strategy. Fellows should take advantage of the considerable intellectual and logistical resources of the Open Society Institute and expect to contribute meaningfully to OSI's thinking in return. In evaluating each proposal, the selection committee weighs three factors: the applicant, the topic of the project, and the work product.

Proposals are accepted year round, but those received by September 7, 2010 will be evaluated by November 26, 2010. Applications received by January 17, 2011 will be evaluated by April 29, 2011.
