[Japan] AUN/SEED-JICA Master Scholarships 2010 in Nine Engineering Fields

The AUN/SEED-Net Project with support from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provides scholarships to highly qualified young teaching staff and graduating students/young graduates (i.e., potential future faculty staff) of Member Institutions to acquire master’s degrees in the following nine engineering fields at respective Host Institutions in other countries:
Chemical Engineering at De La Salle University (DLSU)
Civil Engineering at Chulalongkorn University (CU)
Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Chulalongkorn University (CU)
Environmental Engineering at University of Philippines-Diliman (UP)
Geological Engineering at Gadjah Mada University (UGM)
Information and Communication Technology at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, Ladkrabang (KMITL)
Manufacturing Engineering at University of Malaya (UM)
Materials Engineering at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)
Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at Institute of TechnologyBandung (ITB).

In order for AUN/SEED-Net students to produce high quality thesis research of international standard and to ensure the completion of the master’s degree within two years, AUN/SEEDNet provides vital support, in terms of financial and academic, through joint thesis research supervision, to AUN/SEED-Net Master’s students at all Host Institutions. The joint thesis research supervision will be carried out through the Collaborative Research Program, which has been created by each Host Institution for a few well-defined research themes (or research umbrellas) in consultation with Japanese Field Coordinating University, each of which is a collection of interrelated and progressively conducted thesis research topics. Each AUN/SEED-Net student (including doctoral sandwich student) shall conduct thesis research under one of these research themes.

Besides, according to AUN/SEED-Net Students’ Mobility scheme which is promoted to enable students to benefit educationally and culturally from the experience of learning at other Member Institution(s), Master’s students may be supported to take a course(s) or conduct research at other Member Institution(s) for a short period. Students are advised to consult with their advisors and Host Institution on the necessity, possibility and procedures of their mobility.

Those who complete this Master’s Degree Program with outstanding thesis research are encouraged to pursue a doctoral degree in one of the above nine fields either at Japanese Supporting Universities under the “Doctoral Degree Program in Japan”, or at Host Institutions (in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand) under the “Doctoral Degree Sandwich Program” with co-supervision by Japanese professors, or at the two Singaporean universities (NTU & NUS) under “Doctoral Degree Program in Singapore”.

The upgrading scheme is expected to be implemented at some host institutions for master’s students who prove outstanding performance and wish to get upgraded to doctoral level. The details will be finalized by all concerned and announced in due course.

2. Objectives
To increase the number of high quality Master’s degree holders in engineering at Member Institutions which would be necessary to contribute to a sustainable industrial development of ASEAN countries.
To strengthen the Master’s degree programs at the Host Institutions so that the production of high quality Master’s degree holders in engineering needed for the region is materialized within the region in collaboration with the Member Institutions and Japanese Supporting Universities.
To strengthen human networking among teaching staff of Member Institutions and Japanese Supporting Universities.

3. Eligibility of Applicants
(a) Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline of engineering, or to be awarded the Bachelor’s degree before starting the Master’s degree program.
(b) Applicants should be ranked within top 10% of the class, or have the grade point average of 3.0 or higher from the grade point system of 4.0 in their undergraduate study.
(c) Applicants must be young faculty staff of Member Institutions, or graduating students, or young graduates of Member Institutions who are strongly motivated to pursue a professional career as faculty staff at Member Institutions.
(d) Applicants should be under the age of 30 at the time of application and capable of carrying out independent research.
(e) Applicants who have already received another equivalent major award, scholarship or a salary to undertake a proposed course are not eligible forscholarships.

4. Selection of Host Institution(s)
(a) Each Host Institution is assigned to host one or two Engineering fields. Applicants must choose to apply to the Host Institution(s) that offer(s) their proposed field of study.

(b) Each Host Institution has drawn up research umbrellas or themes under Collaborative Research Program. It is advised that all applicants should be well aware of research areas that each Host Institution can offer to AUN/SEED-Net students before selecting Host Institution(s), by carefully studying Collaborative Research umbrellas and choose their tentative thesis research topics accordingly. (c) In addition, possible research areas of study will also be expanded to cover five interdisciplinary areas, namely Biotechnology, Disaster Mitigation, Global Environment, Natural Resources/Materials, and New/Renewable Energy. In case an applicant proposes a research topic under these research areas, one is still expected to choose one of the Host Institutions, depending on the focus of the research topic (e.g., if the topic is Mechanical Engineering related renewable energy, applicants should choose ITB. If the topic is Manufacturing Engineering related disaster mitigation, applicants should choose UM. If the topic is Electrical and Electronic Engineering related biotechnology, then the applicants should choose CU)
(d) Applicants can apply to the maximum of two Host Institutions, but cannot apply to any institution within their own country.
(e) Applicants should be aware that some Host Institutions strictly require their applicants to obtain a TOEFL and/or GRE score as an admission requirement. (Please contact each Host Institution for more details.)

5. Target Number of Scholarships

Around 45 scholarships for the Japanese Fiscal Year 2010 will be supported (approximately five scholarships for each host field at Host Institutions in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand).

6. Coverage of Scholarships

The scholarships cover tuition fees, living expenses, health insurance, visa fee and airport tax, and a round-trip air ticket, in accordance with the AUN/SEED-Net Project regulations. There may be partial support(s) from concerned Host and Sending Institution.

7. Commencement and Duration of Scholarships

The commencement of scholarship should be within the Japanese Fiscal Year 2010; that is, awarded students should commence their study within April 2010 – March 2011.

The duration of the scholarship is strictly two years, counting from the day of arrival at a Host Institution. Students who need more than two years to acquire a degree will be expected to self-finance during period of extension.

Note: The AUN/SEED-Net Project, in consultation with the Host Institution, will terminate the award of any student who fails to maintain satisfactory progress at the Host Institution.

8. Application and Screening Procedure

It is advisable for applicants to study and follow the application procedure below. (Please see Attachment 2 for a flow chart of the procedure.)
Applicants submit one set of AUN/SEED-Net’s Application Form (for scholarship) and two sets of Host Institution(s)’ Application Form(s) (for university admission), along with other required documents to the contact person at Member Institutions (as Sending Institutions) to which the applicants belong. The list of names of contact persons at Member Institutions (or Sending Institutions) is given in Attachment 3.
The contact person of each Sending Institution sends a collection of Application Forms to AUN/SEED-Net, together with an endorsement letter from the Dean or designated person endorsing the applications. Please note that sending application directly to AUN/SEEDNet without the endorsement letter will not be accepted. (Sending Institutions may submit the collection of application forms more than once within the deadline.)
AUN/SEED-Net will check all required documents and request missing documents from applicants through Sending Institution, if necessary.
AUN/SEED-Net forwards the collection of Host Applications to respective Host Institutions for admission screening.
Host Institutions screen applicants for admission and identify potential advisor(s), then inform the admission result to AUN/SEED-Net.
AUN/SEED-Net starts its screening for scholarships and informs the result to respective Sending Institutions.Note: At the time of admission and scholarship screening, Host Institutions and AUN/SEED-Net may contact Sending Institutions and/or applicants for missing documents or further information.
Sending Institutions inform their successful applicants to confirm their acceptance of scholarships via Reply Form and submit missing documents, if any, to AUN/SEED-Net.
Contractual matters between Host Institutions and AUN/SEED-Net begins.

9. Submission Deadline of the Application Form

Applications for the Master’s Degree Program should be submitted, in printed forms, to the AUN/SEED-Net Project by January 31, 2010.

[Sweden] Guest Scholarship Program 2010 for Master’s Studies in Sweden

The objective of the scholarship program is to promote democratic, economic and social development through supporting know-how and transfer of knowledge to advanced students within areas in which Sweden is at the forefront of academic research.


The program is only available to citizens of the following countries: Albania, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Kenya, Kosovo, Mali, Moçambique, Moldova, Rwanda, Serbia, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. About 40 scholarships will be offered for the academic year 2010/2011.

Important dates

Prior to applying for a scholarship, application to the master’s degree program must be made via the online application service for master’s programs in Sweden at The service opens on December 1, 2009. The deadline for applications is January 15, 2010.

The application procedure for the actual scholarships will open in February 2010.

Scholarship benefits and period

The scholarship amount is SEK 8,000 per month and the scholarship is only awarded for programs starting in fall semester 2010. The scholarships are usually granted for one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time, but will be extended for programs longer than two semesters provided that study results are satisfactory.

Only a limited number of Swedish master programs will be eligible for scholarships next year. The selection of master programs will take place in January 2010 and the list will be published together with the call for applications in February 2010.

The eligible master programs will be within the following study areas:agriculture and forestry, environmental studies, natural sciences (biotechnology, energy), democracy/human rights/gender issues, peace and development studies, economics and entrepreneurship, education, engineering, health science/medicine, information and communication technology, international relations, media and journalism, law/ international law, social issues, spatial/urban planning and real estate management.

Who is eligible?

The scholarships are intended for guest students belonging to the above mentioned target group for full time temporary studies in Sweden starting in fall semester 2010. There is no age limit for scholarship holders.

You are not eligible for this scholarship if any of the following is true:
You have already lived in Sweden for two years or more when the scholarship period is due to begin.
You have a Swedish permanent residence permit or a work permit.
You have a previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for studies at the master’s level or research at a Swedish university.

However, students who have attended a Swedish Institute summer course in Swedish language or the Swedish Institute Summer University may apply.
Travel grants

Scholarship holders from ODA countries will receive travel support in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a lump sum, given only once. Citizens from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia (FYROM), Kosovo, Moldova and Serbia, will receive SEK 5,000. Citizens from the remaining countries receive SEK 10,000.


Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

Scholarship limitations

The scholarship is designed to cover living costs for the scholarshipholder. There are no grants for family members.

Scholarship holders following a two year master’s degree program are permitted to spend a maximum of one semester abroad in connection with their studies while retaining the scholarship.

Applications are invited for one PhD position in the Environmental Chemistry Group of Prof. Kristopher McNeill at ETH Zurich. The research is focused on the development and implementation of chemical probes for reactive oxygen species. The ultimate goal of the research is to determine the mechanisms involved in photochemical virus inactivation, relevant to natural and engineered water purification. This project will bring together chemical synthesis, photochemistry, spectroscopy, and novel analytical techniques, and is a collaborative effort with the group of Prof. Tamar Kohn at EPFL. This project is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The ideal candidate will have experience in synthetic organic chemistry and a strong interest in environmental organic chemistry. Good knowledge of English (spoken and written) is essential. Applicants should hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in environmental sciences, chemistry, or a related discipline. Employment will be according to standard regulations at ETH (funding secured for 3 years). The project will start in February 2010 or later upon mutual agreement.

SICSA prize studentships are worth around £18, 000 per year for 3 years.

They include support for living expenses of at least £12, 940, research expenses and a contribution towards postgraduate fees at the UK standard Home/EU rate (currently £3400). Students who are not UK/EU residents must pay the higher overseas student fee of around £11,500 per year. However, if you are awarded a SICSA studentship, you may apply to the admitting university for additional support to cover the difference in fees. The award of a SICSA studentship does not guarantee such support.

Students must have or must expect to be awarded a 1st class honours degree, an MSc with Distinction or equivalent GPA scores. Your degree must be in a discipline that is relevant to your proposed field of research.

Over the past few years, entrepreneurship has become an area of increased strategic interest and the entrepreneurship research group at The Department of Management therefore invites applicants for a position as PhD student. This particular position is within the area of entrepreneurship and regional development and is funded by the Regional Development Council.

The PhD student will be joining a dedicated and vibrant group of senior and junior researchers in entrepreneurship from both the business school and the university. S/he will be expected to partake in events arranged by the group and in writing of academic articles alone and with members of the group, and to communicate research results to the public. A successful international applicant is expected to acquire a basic working knowledge of Danish during the early period of the PhD position.

Two PhD scholarships are available at DTU Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark in the field of offshore wind energy. The department has a well-proven research tradition in wind energy. The department is strongly involved in ocean energy research through the Statkraft Ocean Energy Research Program, a collaboration between Statkraft AS, DTU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and University of Uppsala. The two scholarships are supported by Statkaft AS through this programme.

Starting date is 1 April 2010.

Project 1: Wake Effects in Wind FarmsAn existing CFD model for studying three-dimensional flow fields and wake effects in wind farms will be further developed. Computations will be carried out for flows about blades of modern wind turbines clustered in farms. The computing code will be validated against existing measurements from both laboratory and field measurements. The computations are expected to give detailed information about basic features of wind turbine wakes, including turbulence properties and vortex structures, and used to clarify the influence of wake effects when air flow is passing by a row of wind turbines. The model serves in particular to analyze and verify the validity of the basic assumptions employed in the simple engineering models. Furthermore, the results may aid in achieving optimal designs of rotors as well as in the establishment and planning of wind parks.


Candidates should have a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Strong skills in scientific computing, fluid mechanics, applied mathematics and C/Fortran/Matlab programming are required as well as a keen interest in offshore wind energy. Documented knowledge or experience within wind energy and/or offshore engineering will be considered as an advantage.

This annual contest, co-sponsored by NASA Ames and the National Space Society (NSS) is for 6-12th graders (11-18 years old) from anywhere in the world. Individuals, small teams of two to six, and large teams of seven or more (often whole classrooms with teacher leadership) may enter. Grades 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12 are judged separately, except for the grand prize. Students develop space settlement designs and related materials. These are sent to NASA Ames for judgement.   1. The submission must be the student’s own work. Plagiarism is forbidden. You may quote short passages, but material copied from a source must be surrounded in double quotes (”) and the source indicated.
  2. Instructors, mentors or parents may assist the student in presenting relevant resources, discussing core concepts and editing, but the work itself, must be entirely student driven.
  3. Submissions must relate to orbital colonies. Colonies may not be on a planet or moon. Colonies must be permanent, relatively self-sufficient homes, not temporary work camps.
  4. If your entry is longer that 10-20 pages, consider including a one page executive summary on the best features of your entry. Project description:
Although a well-designed sewage sludge digester has in the past been synonymous with a well-mixed digester, the associated energy and resource costs are significant. The water industry now seeks the minimum degree of mixing to minimise cost and environmental impact without compromising biogas output. The limited evidence base suggests that continual mixing might not be necessary for maximising sludge conversion to biogas. It also suggests that not all parts of a digester need to be mixed equally, with unmixed strata at the base of the digester demonstrating methane producing activity 1.5 times of that in mixed zones.
In order to predict confidently the optimum mixing regime for a particular sludge digester, we need to determine to what extent biogas output depends on, and can be influenced by, flow patterns in a digester; flow patterns which are in turn determined by physical parameters of the digestion vessels, inflow mode, mixing systems and sludge rheology. Thus, mixing regimes for sludge digesters could be tailored to enable flow patterns that would potentially increase biogas production and/or reduce mixing energy input; in both cases improving the overall energy yield from that digester and reducing its environmental impact.

The overall aim of this project is to identify mixing regimes and associated flow patterns that optimise biological activity and hence biogas output, while minimising energy input, for anaerobic sludge digesters. This will be achieved through an analysis of the relationship between biogas yield and mixing in laboratory-scale digesters for a range of physical sludge characteristics (e.g. viscosity, yield stress, solids content) and energy input characteristics (e.g. mixing speed and frequency, impeller size, number and position).
The student will also develop a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the laboratory digesters to visualise flow patterns and quantify turbulence effects that impact on biogas yield. The experimental and numerical results will then be used in combination to identify optimum mixing regimes for digesters depending on their sludge rheology, operational regimes, tank dimensions and mixing systems.
Entry requirements:
To qualify for the full scholarship, you need to be a UK national, or a UK permanent resident, or an EU national, who has been resident in the UK for more than three years. You should have a good degree (1st Class, 2.1 or MSc) in civil or chemical engineering, applied mathematics or a related physical science. Some experience in wastewater treatment or CFD is preferred but not essential.

Short Information —Wegener Center
The Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change is an interdisciplinary, internationally oriented research center of the University of Graz (Faculty of Environmental and Regional Sciences and Education, with base institutes also in the Faculties of Natural Sciences and Social and Economic Sciences), which combines the competences of the University in the research areas “Climate, Environmental, and Global Change”. The center brings together, in a building close to the University central campus dedicated for that purpose, research teams and scientists from fields such as geophysics and climate physics, meteorology, economics, geography, and regional sciences. At the same time, close links exist and are further developed with many cooperation partners, both nationally and internationally. The research interests extend from monitoring, analysis, modeling and prediction of climate and environmental change via climate impact research to the analysis of the human dimensions of these changes, i.e., the role of humans in causing and being affected by climate and environmental change as well as concerning adaptation and mitigation (for more details please
