The Master Course ‘Global Studies - A European perspective' is an interdisciplinary, research-based Master offered by a consortium of five European universities:

Admission criteria

Applicants should fulfil the following requirements:
A bachelors degree or recognised equivalent from an accredited institution in Social Sciences or Humanities
A sufficient undergraduate training to do graduate work in chosen field
Very good academic performance
Excellent English skills
Furthermore we do appreciate if applicants have at least a basic knowledge of German

Selection criteria

Admission decisions are made by the EMGS Selection Committee upon the following criteria:
very good/outstanding study results (= academic excellence)
academic potential and recommendation

quality/recognition of home institution having awarded the first degree

Deadlines and timetable

The deadline for applicants, that want to apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship is 1 December of each year for the next cycle of the programme starting in fall of the following year.

Applications arriving by the deadline at the Global Studies office in Leipzig (address see below) will be automatically taken into consideration for the Erasmus Mundus grant. Therefore please send only one application to apply for the Master's course in Global Studies and the Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

For applicants that do not want to apply for the Erasmus Mundus grant or that missed the above indicated deadline it is possible to apply by 30 June of each year for the next cycle of the programme starting in fall of the same year.

Meeting the application deadline will be established by the date of arrival of the hardcopy application at the Leipzig office.

Approximately 3 weeks after your application has arrived in our offices you will receive a confirmation of receipt via e-mail. The final decision on the award of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship will be made in June only.
The final decision on the admission to the programme for those students not being awarded an Erasmus Mundus grant will be announced at the latest by the end of July. You will be informed via e-mail soon after a decision taken.

The EMMEP (Erasmus Mundus Minerals and Environmental Programme) is a 2 year M.Sc. program for students in Mining / Geotechnical Engineering, Mineral Processing, Recycling and related academic studies. There are three different specialisations; accommodating groups with 15 to 20 students each.

Joining the EMMEP program is an excellent opportunity to study abroad with a group of international students.

The Erasmus Mundus programme in Distributed Computing is a cooperation between KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, Instituto Superior Técnico in Portugal and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Spain. It is a two-year Master's programme including compulsory mobilty for the students.
The EMDC programme offers education of high international standard as well as cultural experience from two different European countries and a double degree from two universities.

Goals of the Master's course
In this Master's course, knowledge and skills in all fields in BME will be given, so when you finished the Master's programme, you can be employed as generalist, and you will also be specialised in one particular field of BME; as a student, you are able to select any field within BME. You will be trained to work in interdisciplinary project teams, composed of engineers and medical specialists. To prepare further for interdisciplinary teams, students and scholars are treated as equal. To train for working in a European setting, you will get knowledge in the health care situation in several countries in Europe, and you will be trained in cultural differences between European countries.

Admission Procedure
Submission to the Master's course of Biomedical Engineering

For submission for the Erasmus Mundus Master's course of Biomedical Engineering, an application form has to be filled in and sended to the University of groningen. The final deadline for this submission is April 17th 2011 for EU-Students and December 1st, 2010 for non-EU-students. On the application form, the three Universities of preference need to be filled out. Also the preference of the University for the third and fourth semester can be filled out. This can be changed until the first of june, the year the third semester is starting. After submission a confirmation of receipt is received by e-mail.

After studying the application forms, the management committee will make a distribution of applicants among the consortium universities based on their capacity. There will be a notification about the outcome of the selection procedure, within 2 months after the deadline for application. This decision is a final decision. The course starts September 1st each year.

If accepted, a letter of acceptance will be received with information on where to start the course. The international offices provide the non-EU students and scholars with all necessary information and materials (brochures especially designed as a guide for foreign students / scholars) on structure of the university, its academic courses and extra-curricular offerings. Subsequently, arrangements will be made with the international offices of the participating universities for visa, housing, etc.

All accepted candidates must reply within 3 weeks to confirm their attendance to the course.
Non-EU students will in principle be equally distributed among the partner universities. Of course, in the distribution process the consortium will take into consideration the preferences of the selected non-EU students as much as possible. The principles of equal opportunities without any form of discrimination will be applied.

Submission for semester 3 and 4
Ultimately, in June of the 2nd semester the three specialisations of the 3rd semester in the preference of choice must be submitted.
After one year the studying progress will be judged. If the first year is not finished, the student has to leave the EMMC. In this way we will increase the level of our Master’s.
Selection criteria
To ensure quality of the course, the enrolment in CEMACUBE is limited to 20 students per consortium university. The consortium reserves at least 15 places for non-EU students.
For the first year that the EMMC is running the course is limited to 35 European students and 15 non-EU students, so in general 10 per consortium university.

For admission with a scholarship, you need to meet the following criteria:

A BSc in Biomedical, chemical, electronical or mechanical engineering, or applied physics. In detail the Bachelor program must demonstrate that the following criteria are attained:
Basic knowledge and understanding of mathematics, physics, chemistry
Applying, integrating knowledge and understanding of mathematics, physics, chemistry
The capability to communicate effectively in English, both in written and in verbal form.
An ability to conduct scientific research individually on a distinct, well described topic
An ability to design products that can solve problems in a systematic way
The applicant needs to send in the original of the transcript of records (or certified copy) or degree certificate. Applicants in the final year of their Bachelor’s study may also apply. They should send in an updated version of their transcript of records. They will be accepted on the condition that they will have met with all requirements by the start of the CEMACUBE-course in September.
Degree certificates, originating from other than the consortium universities, will be judged by the consortium secretariat that use lists of universities with a sufficient level of quality.
An excellent command of the English language is a prerequisite for participation in the CEMACUBE programme.
Academic excellence as is evident from the awarding institution of the first degree, the grades obtained and the content of two letters of reference.

EU-regulations that are installed to ensure a geographical balance of the selected students require that no more than two students from the same country can be awarded an Erasmus Mundus scholarship

Due to the high tuition fees in Dublin, we will limit the number of students for Dublin to 14%. The other students will go to the other 4 universities (a mean of 21% per university).
Erasmus Mundus Masters are funded by the European Union. Together with 18 other Master programmes, CEMACUBE has in 2009 been selected as a new Erasmus Mundus Masters programme that will be funded for five years (and with possible extension of another 5 years). The competition was fierce; only about 20% of the proposals for new Erasmus Mundus Masters have been awarded funding.

Erasmus Mundus aims to enhance the quality of higher education in Europe, and to promote dialogue and understanding between people and cultures through cooperation with third-world countries. In addition, it contributes to the development of human resources and the international cooperation capacity of higher education institutions in non-European countries by increasing mobility between the European Union and these countries.

Available position
A research fellowship is offered to join the research program Advanced concepts and process schemes for CO2 free fluidised and entrained bed co-gasification of coals, financed by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel of the European Commission for the period 2010-2013. This international project aims at integrating gasification schemes for the co-gasification of coal, biomass and wastes with processes for CO2 separation and capture. The project will be carried out by nine research units of European universities, research centres and companies
The research fellow will be responsible for flowsheet model development of process schemes, including entrained flow gasification, water gas shift reaction, CO2 capture and power generation. The program will cover also heat integration and economic evaluation of the process.
Requirements
A Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or Process Engineering with extensive experience (preferably two years) using process simulation software (Aspen Plus, Hysys, ProII, gProms etc.). Good level of knowledge and experience in programming language are highly appreciated

Duration and scholarship
Two years (possible one year extension). 16000-19000 EUR/year depending on experience. Considering the cost of living in Salerno, the scholarship is more than adequate for covering all the living expenses.

PhD position in Applied Bioinformatics at Wageningen University & Research Centre (WUR), Netherlands

PhD position “Whole genome sequence analysis in tomato: Mechanisms of introgression breeding”.

Background: Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR) is worldwide renowned for its research and education in the fields of life sciences, plant improvement and sustainability. Through these activities it aims to make essential contributions to the quality of life. A focus of pioneering research towards increased yields and improved quality is the genome biology of economically valuable crops such as tomato and potato.

The Plant Sciences Group of WUR has an important position in international efforts to elucidate and use the genome sequence of these crops. The Applied Bioinformatics group of the PSG participates in these efforts through next generation sequencing, genome assembly, annotation and extracting biologically relevant knowledge from such genome sequences.

WUR is also a partner in the Centre for BioSystems Genomics (CBSG2012). The CBSG and the National Institute for Plant Genome Research in Delhi, India, have received a grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to start a joint research project on development and application of next generation sequencing technologies to one of CBSG’s crop targets, tomato, which is also an important crop in India.

Job description: the job concerns a PhD position in the Applied Bioinformatics group of the Plant Sciences Group of WUR. In this project, we will analyze the genomes of three tomato genotypes: two parents of the well-studied introgression line population, S. lycopersicum cv. Allround and S. pennellii LA716, and the genome of one F5 offspring line. Sequencing of these genomes will be performed in an associated project and will involve a combination of next generation sequencing technologies.

Comparative bioinformatic analyses of the parent and offspring genomes will be geared towards obtaining novel insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying genetic introgression in plants. The PhD student will assemble, annotate and compare the three genome sequences with the aim to study the pattern of genome reorganization from chromosome- down to nucleotide-level detail. We will test and employ a variety of bioinformatics tools for genome assembly, annotation and whole-genome comparison, and perform SNP mining for breeding purposes.

The collaboration within this project with the National Institute for Plant Genome Research in New Delhi, India, will imply that the PhD student will spend a maximum of 2 years of the 4-year PhD study at the sister institute in India. In addition, the PhD student will actively cooperate with an Indian counterpart (PhD student) based in Delhi and working on the breeding aspects of the project. This PhD student in return will spend a maximum of 2 years in Wageningen.

We offer a state-of-the art computational infrastructure and have close collaboration with plant biologists and breeding companies with considerable expert knowledge of the biological issues and wishes concerning the data. The position is available for 4 years, full time (38 hrs/wk), 2 years of which will be housed in New Delhi, India. The student will be part of the graduate school of Experimental Plant Sciences (EPS). The research should result in the successful defence of a PhD after 4 years. In line with the quality protocol of EPS, after 12 months and assuming progress and performance of the PhD student meets requirements the position will be continued for the full period.

Scholarships for Foreign Graduate Students in Journalism, USA

International scholarship in the field of Journalism by The Foreign Press Association
The Foreign Press Association, founded in 1918 and the oldest association of journalists in the United States, has established a scholarship program aimed at encouraging foreign students enrolled in graduate programs in this country to pursue a career reporting on international affairs.

A minimum of three scholarships will be awarded, one for $10,000, one for $7,500, and the other for $5,000. The money is to be used for further study in print, broadcast or photojournalism. Only applicants with F-1 and J-1 Visas are eligible for consideration.

Presentation of awards will be made at the Annual Dinner of the FPA in early May 2011.

PhD Position in 3D Measurement System for the Design of a Novel Solar Energy Power Plant, Austria

Vienna University of Technology (VUT) is announcing a Doctoral College (DC) called Energy Systems 2030 (ENSYS 2030). The Doctoral College is related to VUT’s research focus Energy and Environment and daimensioned for a research group of ten (10) PhD-Students. The project is organized into four (4) work packages. The PhD students are jointly managed by an inter-disciplinary faculty of ten (10) university professors.

Within the work package Offshore Solar Energy, the Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (E122) announces the following PhD#3 (working title): The determination of the 3D shape of static and deformable objects with photogrammetric or ranging methods.

This dissertation concentrates on the development of methods for the highly accurate determination of deformable objects, which partly consists of transparent and reflecting materials. These objects are pneumatic structures for offshore solar power plants. A special focus lies on automation, robustness, reliability and quality assurance. Research comprises essential considerations regarding

sensor selection and adequate arrangement of the measurement set-up,
the calibration of the entire acquisition system under laboratory and real world conditions
assessment of achievable and achieved quality and
the interoperability with modeling and simulation procedures provided by research partners.
The dissertation requires a high level of communication and coordination with the main partners situated both in the UK (Univ. of Strathclyde) and in Vienna (Vienna Model Basin Ltd, E317 – Institute for Lightweight Design and Structural Biomechanics, E302 – Institute of Energy Systems and Thermodynamics) Main objective is to develop a basic design concept for offshore solar power plants.

Given that VUT is seeking a 50% quote of female DC participants, applications of female students are particularly encouraged.

Financing through the DC: The remuneration financed through the DC is 909€ per month, 14 times per year. According to VUT collective agreement for pre-doc positions this corresponds to an employment level of 15 hours per week.

Loughborough University Development Trust (LUDT) Scholarships 2011, UK

Distance learning bursaries are available for new self-financing students resident in certain countries including many developing countries and low income group countries, to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate by distance learning.

These distance learning bursaries are available thanks to the Loughborough University Development Trust, which raises funds from former students and other friends of the University, and from generous grants from the Thriplow Trust and the Waterloo Foundation. A LUDT Scholarship subsidises study of up to four distance learning modules (which form a Postgraduate Certificate, but which could later contribute to an MSc if you can find the full fees for five more modules). The subsidy is such that scholars pay only £300 per module for the four subsidised modules.

For entry in January 2011 there are fifteen scholarships available for new self-financing students resident in certain countries to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate by distance learning. There are three Certificate programmes for which the scholarship can be awarded: Water and Waste Engineering (WWE), Water and Environmental Management (WEM) and Infrastructure in Emergencies (IIE) – click the links for more details.

Certificate programmes consist of four modules. The current module fee is £1025 and the scholarship will be to the value of £725 per module, £2900 in total. Students will need to fund the balance of £300 per module, £1200 in total. This will be paid in instalments of £300, each payment being made before the relevant module starts.

The Government of the Czech Republic Scholarships 2011 for Developing Countries

The Government of the Czech Republic offers a number of scholarships within the framework of its Foreign Development Assistance Programme in support of the study of foreign nationals from developing countries at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic.
These so called Government Scholarships are designed to cover the standard length of study:
in Bachelor/Master study programmes plus one-year preparatory course of the Czech language (which is combined with other field-specific training). Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates from upper secondary schools who can enrol only in study programmes in which they follow instruction in the Czech language. Depending on the subject area, applicants are normally required to take entrance examinations at the respective institution of higher education. The scholarship award is conditional upon a successful passing of entrance examinations;
in follow-up Master study programmes or Doctoral study programmes. Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates from Bachelor or Master study programmes, respectively, who enrol in study programmes with instruction in the English language.

Doctoral Studentships 2010 at School of Business and Management, Queen Mary University of London, UK

The School of Business and Management currently has three studentships available for entry onto the PhD Programme in January 2011.

Research within the School clusters around six broad themes (i) innovation, networks and knowledge; (ii) communications, discourse and narratives; (iii) equality and diversity; (iv) education; (v) globalisation and (vi) business history. Macquarie University International Scholarship (MUIS) 2011 for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Coursework

Macquarie University has one of the most generous scholarship programs in the country, and provides opportunities each year to many students to undertake studies at Macquarie University. Macquarie University is also a participant in Australian Government Scholarship programs.

WHO CAN APPLY?

WHAT DOES MUIS COVER?

Macquarie University International Scholarships are available across most courses to cover international tuition fees for study on campus at North Ryde in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree. Postgraduate courses not available under MUIS are Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Management, Master of Applied Finance (MAF), Master of Advanced Surgery and Master of Surgery.

Scholarships will be granted to cover the credit points required to complete a single undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

The scholarship provides course fees for the minimum course duration. No additional allowances are payable. The scholarship does NOT provide financial support in the form of a living allowance, nor does it provide for the cost of visa application, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), airfares, accommodation, conferences or other costs associated with study. Annual renewal of the MUIS is subject to satisfactory performance in the Macquarie University degree program.

Master Scholarship 2011 in Data mining and Knowledge Management (DMKM) at Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

The primary social and economic value of modern societies is knowledge. For this reason, mastering Information technology for structured or unstructured information recorded in Datawarehouses, such as the Web, and containing dormant knowledge is essential to the development of both individual and society.

Data mining and knowledge management (DMKM) has become essential for improving the competitiveness of businesses and increasing access to knowledge. DMKM still comes up, however, against major scientific and technological obstacles. This EM MC’s degree in DMKM proposes specialized training in this field.

The consortium is composed of six universities among four countries: France (University of Pierre and Marie Curie Paris 6, University of Lyon Lumière Lyon 2, Polytec’Nantes), Romania (University Polithenica of Bucharest), Italy (University of East Piedmont) and Spain (Technical University of Catalonia). The Master in DMKM is based on experience in multi-site teaching gained from the Master’s degree in Knowledge Extraction from Data, which has been running since 1999 within three members of the consortium.

Admission criteria:

To be eligible to apply for the Master’s programme DMKM, students must satisfy to both of the following conditions:

The Master in DMKM is aimed at students from all over the world. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in the fields of computer science, mathematics or statistics, as well as a good level of English (TOEFL 550 or equivalent). Admission is granted on the basis of a selection procedure. Classes are taught in English and the course is composed of 18 modules of around sixty hours each. The course runs over 4 semesters.

The first semester is devoted to basic training and includes subjects in mathematics, statistics, databases, etc., whereas the two following ones are devoted to acquire two specialties among six ones, such as Complex Data Mining, Information retrieval, Knowledge acquisition and management, etc. The fourth semester is targeted to the writing of a dissertation in either a laboratory or a company. Language classes will also be provided to ensure that students integrate as well as possible in socio-cultural terms in the host country. Each student must spend (6-12) months in at least two of the four countries.

Students that have obtained 120 ECTS will automatically obtain national Master degrees from the countries in which they have studied. Classes are transmitted via video-conferencing. They are also recorded and accessible online. Students can benefit, on their site of residence, from support in the form of tutoring for each course. Tuition fees are 4,000 €/year for European students and 8,000 €/year for other students. All candidates may apply for Erasmus Mundus scholarships.

PhD Scholarship at the Quantum Device Physics Laboratory Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

The position will be placed at the Quantum Device Physics Laboratory in the department of Microelectronic and Nanoscience at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden.

The Department is doing research and education with focus on future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems and houses a 1240 m2 of cleanroom space, with state-of-the-art research equipments providing a broad platform for the development and testing of new ideas in nanoelectronic devices.

Job description

Spin-electronics is an alternative paradigm for information processing in which the state variable is the spin angular momentum of the electronic carriers. The ability to exploit spin in semiconductors has rapidly progressed in recent years, with discovery of exciting new phenomena raising prospects for novel devices having new functionality. Much of the interest in materials like silicon and graphene derives from its robustness and longevity of spin as it is only weakly coupled to other degrees of freedom.

Recent demonstrations of spin injection at room temperature in silicon (S.P. Dash et al. Nature 462, 491 (2009)) and graphene (Nature 448, 571 (2007)) bring semiconductor based spin-electronics a step closer to application. For further development still lots of issues remain to be addressed in this project, such as, spin transport in silicon and graphene nanostructures, improvement in spin lifetime by identification and elimination of spurious effects, and electrical control of spin polarization in such materials.

A three-pronged approach will be taken for this research; (i) silicon and graphene nanostructures with improved interfaces with different useful materials will be prepared; (ii) electrical, structural and magnetic properties of interfaces and nanosturctures will be characterized; (iii) the results from device characterization will be used as feedback for selection of new interface materials, with the aim to achieve excellent electronic and spin transport properties of devices. While performing experiments in this research field, the PhD student will have enough freedom to explore and invent their own ideas.

Required qualifications

The successful applicant needs to have master degree in Physics or Nanotechnology, or an equivalent subject. Computer programming skills (in MatLab and LabVIEW, in particular) and experience of working in a clean-room environment are the merits. We prefer candidates with good team spirit, who like to work in an internationally oriented environment. Fluency in English is a requirement. Chalmers is an equal opportunity employer. Erasmus Mundus MSc Course in MathMods – Mathematical Modelling in Engineering: Theory, Numerics, Applications.

Mathematical modelling lies at the heart of most current technological innovations and has become a fundamental tool in many fields of engineering. Essentially multidisciplinary in its applications, mathematical modelling and simulation is in its own right a key technology which is bound to increase its presence within efficient industries and business innovation departments. The proposed programme reflects this multidisciplinarity, drawing on the unifying mathematical aspects from the various and often separate engineering disciplines. This allows the development of an essentially unified methodological approach to modelling and simulation of real engineering challenges.

MathMods is coordinated by the University of L’Aquila in Italy and involves other four leading universities in Europe: the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Catalonia – Spain (UAB), the University of Hamburg in Germany (UHH), the Gdansk University of Technology in Poland (GUT) and the University of Nice – Sophia Antipolis in France (UNSA).
