PhD Student Persuasive Technology

Eindhoven University of Technology

At the core of the project is the belief that technology alone cannot bring about a sustainable society. Individual agents need to change their behavior as well. This is where persuasive technology comes into the picture. It aims at persuading human agents to behave in socially-valued ways, by giving information, providing feedback, and taking over actions.

The success of a persuasive technology that serves the public interest depends on the integration of sound technology, effective persuasive principles and careful attention to ethical considerations. Overall, this research program investigates the psychological mechanisms and the ethical dilemmas of persuasive technology. Specifically, it will consist of an in-depth empirical study of a concrete case where persuasive technology is under development: the energy management and safety of vehicles (cars, trucks). Vehicle simulators will be used to observe human agents using various forms of persuasive technology, where the most important variable will be the amount of control transferred from the user to the technological system.

The present PhD-project will focus on psychological mechanisms related to shared values, competence, trust, experience and confidence that influence allocation of control. This project will run in a strongly interdisciplinary setting: The PhD-student will closely collaborate with another PhD-student (philosophical perspective) and a Postdoc who develops the vehicle control simulation.

APAI-ENHANCED PIGMENT WEATHERING SCHOLARSHIP 2009 – APPLIED CENTRE FOR STRUCTURAL & SYNCHROTRON STUDIES (ACESSS)

APAI-Enhanced Pigment Weathering Scholarship 2009 – Applied Centre for Structural & Synchrotron Studies (ACeSSS)

Scholarship Introduction:
The whitest, brightest, most cost-effective pigment type used in paints is titanium dioxide. However, painted surfaces containing unmodified titanium dioxide undergo weathering while exposed to outside elements such as oxygen, water and UV-light. This results in a reduction of gloss and chalking of the product. The overall objective of this project is to produce a pigment with a new ceramic coating that has superior weathering resistance as compared to pigment coated by existing methods. The Applied Centre for Structural & Synchrotron Studies (ACeSSS) currently employs multidisciplinary research staff and supports an international team of PhD students. The centre works closely with industry sponsors to solve, process and manufacturing problems, and generate the basis for future innovations. This APA(I) project is aimed at developing new coating ceramics by a combined experimental and theoretical approach.

NETHERLAND PHD IN THE INTEGRATED CIRCUIT DESIGN (ICD) 2009

Netherland PhD in the Integrated Circuit Design 2009 – for post graduate students

Scholarship Introduction:
The PhD in the Integrated Circuit Design (ICD) group focuses on the research and realization of integrated high efficiency amplifiers for piezoelectric loads. Amplifying the noise canceling signals for piezoelectric panels is complicated because of the high voltages (up to 100V), erratic load impedance and tough distortion requirements. This renders existing amplifier solutions too large and power hungry. High efficiency amplifier techniques like class D switching amplifiers exist, but we have to move beyond that in order to satisfy the demands for higher efficiency, compactness and low distortion. More information about the ICD group can be found on http://icd.el.utwente.nl

Eligibility for Scholarship:
University Graduate
What we ask
You have completed an Electrical Engineering university degree (M.Sc. level) or are about to graduate in an area that is relevant to our research. France; PhD Studentship Genomic DNA

Studying the mechanisms of action of anti-cancer drugs on the kinetics of DNA replication
Eukaryotic cells replicate their
DNA from hundreds to thousands of chromosomal sites
termed replication initiation sites or replication origins. Initiation of
DNAreplication involves
interactions between these replication origins and a network of cell cycle regulatory proteins. Several
types of anti-cancer drugs (and its candidates) act as an inhibitor of
DNAreplication.
We are looking for a Ph.D student to study the effect of anti-cancer drug on
DNA replication
program using our single molecule approach.
DNA replication analysis with molecular combing
(Replication Combing Assay,
RCA) is a direct method to monitor the effect of chemicals compounds
on the kinetic of
DNA replication. This project is a part of an interdisciplinary training network called
“Image
DDR (High Resolution Microscopy in the DNA damage response)” and supported by the
Commission of the European Communities. The appointee will therefore have opportunities to learn
live cell imaging, high-resolution microscopy and other techniques through an interdisciplinary
training approach that includes specially designed summer schools, workshops and meetings
encompassing all network participants.

[Sweden] Postdoctoral scholarships – The Swedish Research Council

Postdoctoral scholarships

The aim of postdoctoral scholarships is to provide young researchers within the areas of responsibility of Formas with the opportunity of working abroad for a certain period in an internationally prominent research environment. The application for a post-doctoral scholarship is to be written by the recipient of the scholarship. If there are special conditions (which must be fully motivated) a Swedish university or research institute may be considered, but it must be different from the one where the doctoral degree was obtained.

The scholarship is awarded for one or up to two years. The visit may be divided into several periods, with a minimum length of three months each. Applications for extensions to post-doctoral grants awarded no later than 2007 can be submitted consecutively.

To be eligible to apply for a postdoctoral scholarship, the doctoral degree must have been obtained five years before the closing date for the call, counted from January in the year when the applicant received her/his Doctoral degree. Parental leave, illness, military service or other similar circumstance which have prevented research activities after the degree was awarded are acceptable reasons to make an exception from the five-year rule. If the applicant has not been awarded the Doctoral degree by the time the application is submitted the, a copy of the degree diploma/certificate must be submitted to Formas, no later than 1st of November in the year of the main annual call.

Applicants for the post-doctoral scholarship must have Swedish citizenship or permanent residence permit in Sweden.

The recipient is granted a personal scholarship according to the following:

  • An annual scholarship of SEK 250,000-350,000 depending on the costs of living in the host country and the number of accompanying family members. The scholarship conforms to the levels established by EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organisation, www.embo.org).
  • Formas covers expenses for return tickets for the recipient of the scholarship and accompanying family members. The most economical travelling option should be chosen.
  • A total standard sum of SEK 50,000 for research costs.

PhD Position, Prehistoric archaeology: Spatial Analysis of Late Neolithic settlements, The Netherlands

Prehistoric archaeology: Spatial Analysis of Late Neolithic settlements

Spatial analysis of Late Neolithic settlements in the province of Noord-Holland (The Netherlands) and interregional comparison

Available from October 1st, 2009, closing date for applications: September 1st, 2009.

Subject

Spatial analysis of Late Neolithic settlements in the province of Noord-Holland (The Netherlands) and interregional comparison.

This PhD position is part of the project Unlocking Noord-Holland’s Late Neolithic Treasure Chest. This project is co financed by the the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and administered by the State Service for Cultural Heritage (RCE). The project comprises five studies. Two PhD’s are based at the Groningen University (spatial analysis, ceramics), one PhD at Leiden University (flint). The studies on archaeobotany and archaeozoology are carried out by researchers from the state service and private firms.

Introduction

In the second half of the past century, and the 1970-1990’s in particular, excavations were conducted at a series of Late Neolithic settlements belonging to the Single Grave Culture (SGC) (c. 2900-2500 cal BC) in the province of Noord-Holland (Kop van Noord-Holland, De Gouw). These excavations have demonstrated the exceptional quality of the sites, especially thanks to the good preservation of organic materials. In significant contrast to the generally poor and heavily biased archaeological record of the SGC elsewhere in the Netherlands, the rich body of excavation data potentially permits the development of models about settlement variability, the use and role of material culture, as well as landscape use. So far, the excavation data from the various sites have never been analysed integrally. Hence, any ‘models’ of cultural dynamics in the SGC are based on very incomplete data. This project aims to unlock and integrate cultural/ecological information and research data in order to provide a sound basis for cultural modeling and development of heritage management strategies. We will thereby obtain a better understanding of site variability in relation to landscape use, subsistence strategies and the material world of the inhabitants. It provides an opportunity to study a micro-region within the wider SGC culture, so far largely known from its burial context. Its place in relation to the communities in the central and eastern parts of the Netherlands can be assessed and possible long-distance contacts with related Corded Ware groups elsewhere can be studied, addressing the debate on the apparent uniformity of the Corded Ware complex.

Research topics

The study of settlement variability focuses on the identification of functional differences between sites. For this it is necessary to characterise the sites in terms of settlement size, intra-site spatial organisation and functional variability, as well as the duration of occupation (permanent versus seasonal). Insight into these aspects will be obtained through the analysis of cultural and palaeoecological remains. Also, efforts will be made to draw inferences on group composition of settlement inhabitants (sex, age) from material remains and physical anthropological data. For the interpretation of spatial patterns in terms of behaviourally meaningful processes, data will be analysed in an interdisciplinary fashion, in relation to the spatially referenced excavation recordings of objects, features and lithological layers.

Spatial analysis will play a pivotal role throughout the project. The work will start with the digitising of excavation plans and linking of find numbers in order to provide for a spatially referenced environment for further analyses. The availability of such an environment is also of importance for the sampling of materials in other research modules. The analysis of spatial data will next focus on research at various levels: identification and characterisation of structures (e.g. house plans, barns, fences, pits, and wells), characterisation of spatial patterns in find distributions, and development of spatial models of site formation dynamics. This multi-level approach contributes to the evaluation and interpretation of research results in the other modules and provides a sound basis for syntheses at site level. It will also contribute to the compilation of models for site formation that are not restricted to the SGC sites in Noord-Holland, but extend to other Neolithic wetland sites in the Netherlands.

The candidate needs affinity with computer-based modelling, spatial analysis and site formation processes
