The Norwegian Quota Scheme

Deadline: 1 December 2009
Open to: Students from developing countries, Central and Eastern Europe, and former Soviet states for studies at institutions of higher education in Norway
Funding: Part loan/part grant

The Norwegian Quota Scheme

The Norwegian Quota Scheme is a funding scheme offered by the Norwegian Government to students from developing countries, Central and Eastern Europe, and former Soviet states for studies at institutions of higher education in Norway. This funding scheme aims at offering specially designed, research-based Master's Degrees taught in English. The Quota Scheme also offers funding for Ph.D.-programmes and a one-year course in advanced Norwegian Language. Quota Scheme applicants should come from universities/institutions with formal cooperation agreements with the University of Oslo.

Who May Apply?

Applicants for admission under the Quota Scheme must fulfill certain criteria in order to be considered for admission. Admission is limited and therefore extremely competitive.

Nationality

Only applicants from countries included in the list of countries eligible for Quota Scheme funding will be considered. Please note that applicants who live in another country than their country of citizenship, either temporary or permanently, cannot apply. It is a condition that the applicant applies for admission to the quota scheme from his or her home country, and can substantiate that he or she has been in the home country for at least one year prior to admission into the programme. Applicants from an eligible country, who are residing in another country on the list, may in some cases be considered. Quota Scheme students are expected to return home on completion of their studies in Norway.

Institutional Cooperation

Applicants should come from institutions with which the University of Oslo has a cooperation agreement. Potential applicants should check with their home institution to determine whether they have a cooperation agreement with the University of Oslo.

Women

Women are encouraged to apply. The University of Oslo gives priority to female applicants under the Quota Scheme.

Courses Offered

The Quota Scheme at the University of Oslo offers specially designed, English-taught Master's Degrees and a one-year programme in advanced Norwegian language studies. The Quota Scheme also offers funding to doctoral programme students.

* Master's Degrees
* Doctoral programmes
* 1-year programme in Advanced Norwegian

Funding

The Quota Scheme is a scholarship programme, but the funding is given as part loan/part grant. Students receive money from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. After completing the programme and providing documentary evidence of return to his/her home country, the student's outstanding loan is converted to scholarship. If residence is taken in Norway within ten years after termination of studies, the scholarship is converted back to a loan and must be repaid.

For further information regarding rules and regulations set by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund, please see Financial Aid and Remission of Debt for Citizens from Developing countries and countries in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia (quota scheme) 2009-20010

Criteria for application

Required Educational Background

The Quota Scheme is aimed at postgraduate students. Applicants must fulfil the basic entrance requirements for matriculation at a Norwegian institution of higher education. In addition to the basic entrance requirements, applicants for the Quota Scheme must provide documentary evidence of the following:

* For Master's Degree programmes, the minimum requirement is three (3) years of study at university level, i.e. minimum Bachelor's Degree level (or equivalent).
* For doctoral programmes, applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years of university-level studies in their chosen subject. For further information, click here.
* For the one-year advanced Norwegian language programme, the minimum requirement is two (2) years of study at university level; however, applicants with a completed first degree will be given priority.

Grade requirement

Admission to these programmes is very competitive, and only applicants with excellent grades will be considered (minimum B+/ Upper second/GPA 3.0).

Proficiency in English

Documentation of English language skills is required for admission to any of the programmes offered under the Quota Scheme.

* TOEFL minimum score 550 (paper-based) / 213 (computer-based) / 80 (iBT)
* IELTS minimum band 6.0 academic test.

For more information regarding the English language requirement, see page about English Proficiency Requirements. All applicants must have their English test results sent directly to the University of Oslo from TOEFL or IELTS.

Subject knowledge

Applicants must have completed prior university studies in the subject of the programme to which they are applying. Please note that some of the Master's Degree programmes have additional admission criteria. For further information go to the website of the specific Master programme.

How to Apply

Due to the large number of Quota applicants to a limited number of Quota scholarships available, potential applicants must submit the online 'Request for Application Form' before they can receive the formal application form. The 'Requests for Application Forms' will be processed by the International Education Office and only applicants that fulfil all the formal Quota requirements will receive the application form. The deadline for submitting the online 'Request for Application Form' is 1 November, in order for the students to have sufficient time to submit the Quota Scheme application and the required documents before the 1 December application deadline.

The Request for Application Form for the 2010 enrolment will be available on this web site end of August 2009.

Students address their Quota application directly to the International Education Office at the University of Oslo.
Doctoral programme applicants must in addition send in their research proposal and application for admission to doctoral studies to the relevant faculty.

The Quota application deadline for enrolment in August 2010 is 1 December 2009. This is also the deadline for all supporting documents. Late applications will not be considered.

PhD Research Scholarships, Singapore

Deadline: 15th November 2009
Open to: International students
Funding:
Ph.D. research scholarships

PhD Research Scholarships, NUS
Singapore

The Asia Research Institute is pleased to offer Ph.D. research scholarships from August 2010 in the following interdisciplinary areas:

- THE CHANGING FAMILY IN ASIA

- ASIAN MIGRATION

- RELIGION & GLOBALISATION IN ASIAN CONTEXTS

- CULTURAL STUDIES IN ASIA

- COLD WAR IN ASIA

- SUMATRA HERITAGE, ARCHAEOLOGY AND RECONSTRUCTION

The PhD scholarship is to be taken up jointly with the appropriate discipline-based department. This would normally be with a department of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, but where appropriate could also be with the Faculty of Law, School of Business or School of Design & Environment at the National University of Singapore. Please note that some departments / Programmes only have one intake per year in August (Semester 1).

Interested applicants are required to submit their application by 15th November 2009, indicating clearly both which ARI interdisciplinary area they wish to join and which department they would be attached to. Application procedures and forms can be obtained from the NUS website.

Applicants must use the application forms in the respective Faculty websites depending on the Faculty to which they wish to seek admission. They should send their applications directly to their respective faculties, indicating their interest to be attached to ARI. Applicants should not send a duplicate copy to ARI.

The following interdisciplinary areas or "clusters" are offering scholarships:

1) The Changing Family in Asia (Research Leader: Prof Gavin Jones)
This cluster explores the dimensions of family change in the region, their causes and their implications. These dimensions include rising ages at marriage, declining size of the nuclear family, increase in one-person households and alternative family forms, changing gender roles within families, and changes in family structures. They are
studied in the context of the changing political-economic structures and changing state/family roles in provision of services and support.

2) The Migration Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Brenda Yeoh) explores the issues arising from increased levels of human mobility in the region, both within and across national borders. Mobility of high-level professional and managerial personnel, labour migration, both documented and undocumented, and human trafficking all raise theoretical and methodological questions and major policy issues, as does the role of migration in urban change.

3) The Religion and Globalisation Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Bryan Turner) explores the changing patterns of religious practice, belief and identity in recent times, particularly in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia.

The title implies a particular interest in transnational and diasporic interactions, the engagement with modern technologies and values, and new global or ‘glocal’ forms of identity.

4) The Cultural Studies Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Chua Beng Huat) consciously challenges disciplinary boundaries to address new topics, issues and concerns thrown up by the rapid globalization of contemporary cultures.

ARI is interested in new understandings of the everyday life cultural practices of contemporary Asia, as in adaptations of older patterns in literature, and the performing and graphic arts, in rapidly changing contemporary conditions.

5) The Southeast Asia-China Interactions Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Anthony Reid) will welcome students in two project areas: The Cold War in Asia, relating particularly to relations between the two Chinas (CCP and KMT) and the parties, movements and governments of Southeast Asia; and issues of heritage recovery and archaeology in Aceh and Sumatra more generally.

6) The Asian Cities Cluster (Research Leaders: Prof Heng Chye Kiang & Prof Chua Beng Huat) is housed in School of Design and Environment (SDE), Department of Architecture (NUS). This cluster focuses especially on cutting-edges areas of rapid change and the identity of Asia cities, notably including: the impact of rapid urbanization, adapting and conserving heritage to a changing urban environment, and urban environmental planning. It will build collaborative and interdisciplinary connections among the colleagues from the Humanities and Social Science faculties in NUS.

ARI is a university-level institute formed in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the NUS. The mission of the Institute is to produce and promote world-class research on Asia. ARI engages the social sciences and humanities broadly defined, and encourages especially multidisciplinary studies. Now home to six research clusters with a strong team of resident and visiting scholars, ARI works closely with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business, Faculty of Law, and School of Design and Environment in NUS.

Ph.D. fellow, Architecture & Design, Aalborg

Deadline: 15.10.2009
Open to: PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree
Funding: Stipends and salary

At the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, Department of Architecture & Design a position as Ph.D. fellow (position no. 562/06-19-29194) is open for appointment from 1.1.2010

Job description:

“Aalborg Øst” – A transformation of a suburb to part of the future city

The PhD stipend is available within the general study programme “Planning and Development”.

The PhD position is an integrated part of a larger research project. The focus of the PhD is mapping physical conditions in an urban context which today prevent people from meeting each other on a daily basis. The research done by the PhD fellow will take a point of departure in the City of Aalborg and in one specific urban area “Aalborg Øst” and will act in close cooperation with the other partners in the bigger research project.

The PhD fellowship will analyze how the different areas of “Aalborg Øst” are used by younger people. It will investigate if it is possible to design the areas in a different way so that it is possible for primarily the younger people to meet and enjoy, and communicate with each other and other people on a regular daily basis. This part of the research project can be divided into three minor parts or work packets. The young people are chosen as the target group because they are the future users of the city of Aalborg and “Aalborg Øst”.

In the first part of the PhD fellowship, GPS based tracking should be used to register a group of younger people’s behaviour and flows in “Aalborg Øst” and the city of Aalborg. The GPS tracking should be combined with statements from interviews about the young people’s daily life and dependency on the design of the urban area they are living in.

In the second part of the PhD fellowship a layout and design with the incorporated changes suggested by the young people in “Aalborg Øst” and based on the GPS tracks should be made. The layout and design should result in better places for young people to stay and live in during the day together with other target groups of people. There are already local designs in “Aalborg Øst” like the playground ”motionslegepladsen på Ravnkildevej” which can be used as inspiration where different types of people with different cultural background etc. meet regularly.

The third and last part of the PhD fellowship also takes a point of departure in “Aalborg Øst” but should present a vision and a plan for how “Aalborg Øst” can be connected more directly with the other areas in
the municipality of Aalborg by reducing the amount of dwellings in one urban area and increasing it in others, making specific urban areas more compact, in “Aalborg Øst” and maybe close down existing urban areas and create new urban areas closer to the City of Aalborg. The third part of the PhD fellowship should also present a principle strategy for how suburban areas in general and specially how “Aalborg Øst” can become a more differentiated and diverse urban area with regard to different types of ownership and functional attractions and more directly connected to rest of the city of Aalborg.

Background and expertise:

The PhD fellow position is anchored in the Department of Architecture & Design, Aalborg University, where the PhD fellow will be involved in teaching and supervising. The PhD fellow will also be heavily involved in other research projects in order to get as much research experience as possible. A candidate with relevant research experience or other similar work experience will be preferred.

Qualification requirements:

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend. Appointment and salary acc. to the Ministry of Finance Circular of January 11, 2006 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the Ministry of Finance Circular of June 13, 2007 on the employment structure at Danish Universities.
