Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. Research Fellowships, John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, USA

Scholars are invited by the Kennedy Library to apply for the Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. Research Fellowships. These fellowships are administered by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation from income provided by the Schlesinger Fund.

Schlesinger Fellowships carry a stipend of up to $5,000, which may be awarded to a single individual or divided between two recipients. They are intended to support scholars in the production of substantial works on the foreign policy of the Kennedy years, especially with regard to the western hemisphere, or on Kennedy domestic policy, especially with regard to racial justice and to the conservation of natural resources.

Successful candidates will develop at least a portion of their work from original research in archival materials from the collections of the Kennedy Library and related materials. Proposals are invited from all sources, but preference will be given to those from applicants specializing in the areas indicated above. Preference is also given to projects not supported by large grants from other institutions.

The postmark deadline for applications is August 15 2010. Applicants will be promptly notified of their projects’ eligibility. Awards will be announced on October 20.

To obtain information about the Library’s holdings, applicants should contact a member of the research room staff at the adress below or by phone (617-514-1629) and request a copy of Historical Materials in the John F. Kennedy Library.

To apply, submit an application form (pdf) accompanied by a brief proposal (three to four pages) in the form of a letter describing the planned research, its significance, the intended audience, and expected outcome; two letters of recommendation from academic or other appropriate references; a sample of your writing (ca. ten pages); a project budget; and a vita. List the collections in the Kennedy Library and other institutions which you plan to use. Describe how the funds will be applied, other fellowships or grants which will support the project and whether matching funds are available to you from your institution or elsewhere. In your proposal, describe your qualifications and similar research projects you have undertaken.

The estimated per diem cost of accommodations, meals and incidentals for Boston is $225.
