The GKSS Research Centre is located in Geesthacht near Hamburg, Germany, with a further centre in Teltow near Berlin, and is a member of theHelmholtz Association of German Research Centres (HGF). With itsapproximately 800 employees it undertakes, in collaboration withuniversities and industry, research and development in the areas ofcoastal research, materials research, regenerative medicine, and structureresearch with neutrons and synchrotron radiation.
The Institute for Coastal Research "Systemanalyse und Modellierung" inGeesthacht (near Hamburg, Germany), invites applications for a PhD position - Code-No. 2009/KS 1
Appointment will begin as soon as possible and will be for three years. The determination of the initial status of the forecast in numericalweather forecast is based on the assimilation of observational data. Thesedata are mainly temperature, wind, and humidity from synoptical weatherstations, but also atmospheric quantities derived from satellitemeasurements become important in recent years. New satellite missions helpto get a more detailed picture of the atmosphere. Also the assimilationtechniques developed further. Presently measured data are not just used todefine the initial state of a weather forecast model, but can also beassimilated into a the model during run time. This technique is of specialinterest in hindcasting, i.e. for long time simulations of past years.
Aim of the PhD thesis to improve the quality of long time hindcastsimulations with a regional climate model by assimilating high resolutionmeasurements into the model simulations. The main focus is to study theeffect on the regional water cycle. The work is part of the researchnetwork "Earth Observation System" in the Helmholtz association.
We offer an appropriate salary, related to TV-AVH as well as the usualpublic sector social benefits. GKSS is an equal opportunity/affirmativeaction employer seeking to increase the proportion of female facultymembers. Qualified women are therefore especially encouraged to apply.Physically handicapped persons will be favoured if they are equallyqualified. The GKSS strongly supports equal opportunities.
