Introduced in honour of Howard Crew, General Secretary of BUNAC for 25 years, the Green Cheese Awards consist of the Green Cheese Scholarships and the Green Cheese Prizes and are awarded on a competitive basis. The unique nature of the awards reflects the personality and sense of humour of Howard Crew.


Eligibility:

The Green Cheese Prizes are awarded on a competitive basis for the best accounts of experiences while taking part in a BUNAC programme.

Application Procedure:

Applicants may submit their account in any medium, or combination of media such as sketched/paintings, writing, photography, video, audio or film. Humour must play an important part in the entry.

Selection Criteria:

The decision of the judging committee is final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the competition results. Alfa Fellowship Program: high-level professional program placing 10 qualified Americans per year in work assignments at leading organizations in Russia in the fields of business, economics, journalism, law, and public policy. Key goals are expanding networks of American/Russian professionals and advancing US/Russian relations.

Eligibility Requirements:

• U.S. citizen between the ages of 25 and 35
• Graduate degree and professional experience in business, economics, journalism, mass communications, law, international relations, political science, government, or public policy. Candidates without a graduate degree must demonstrate extensive and equivalent professional experience in their field
• Outstanding professional achievement and academic qualifications
• Active involvement in community or public service

[UK] Charles Pick Fellowship- University of East Anglia

The Charles Pick Fellowship seeks to give support to the work of a new and, as yet, unpublished writer of fictional or non-fictional prose.
Its purpose is to give promising writers time to devote to the development of his/her talents. The Fellowship is for six months. The award is £10,000.

Applicants for the Fellowship must be writers of fictional or non-fictional prose in English who have not yet published a book (please note that for the purposes of this Fellowship non-fiction prose includes, for example, biography, memoir and travel writing, but not critical or historical monographs based on academic research).
Applicants can be writers of any age and any nationality. The successful candidate will be selected by a distinguished panel of writers.
There will be no interviews, and candidates will be judged on the quality and promise of their writing and the project they describe, and the strength of their referee’s report.
The Fellow will be a member of the School of Literature and Creative Writing and will be required to reside at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, United Kingdom.
Shared office space and computer facilities will be made available for the Fellow in the School of Literature and Creative Writing. During the residential period, The Fellow will be required to submit written work to a nominated mentor and take part in Creative Writing Research Seminars.
No teaching duties attach to the Fellowship.

The UGRAD Scholarship program provide a diverse group of emerging student leaders with a substantive exchange experience at an American college or university. Students both from rural and urban areas are encouraged to apply.

The Global UGRAD Program offers one-semester and one-academic year scholarships to outstanding undergraduate students for non-degree study at accredited American institutions.

To qualify, the students must:

1. Be a second or third year student of a university in Mongolia
2. Have a GPA of no less than 3.0. Please attach your academic transcript in English
3. Provide a valid IBT score of 61 or Institutional TOEFL of 520 (If you don’t have the TOEFL score yet, please contact Educational Advising and Resource Center at 319016 immediately, to register for ITP. Registration deadline is September 30th and please note that seats are limited.)

5. Be 24 years old or younger at the time of application

[Israel] Scholarships for International Workshop on Media Strategies for Social Change

Media have become powerful instruments, taking on a wide social role, conferring status on public issues, people, organizations and social movements. Research testifies that the standing of social policies is raised when they are delivered by people who command favorable attention in the media. Media exposure legitimizes the status of individuals, groups and their causes.

This presents managers of government and grassroots organizations, as well as journalists and public relations officers with new challenges to obtain additional knowledge on the use of media, telecommunications etc. as tools to expose audiences to their views and to enlighten public opinion concerning social policies and services.

During this workshop the participants will analyze the impact of the media on public opinion, politics and setting the political agenda. They will have the opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas on the concepts, programs and methodologies applied in their countries and in Israel.

Objectives
On completion of the workshop, the participants will have:

• analyzed the role of media as a tool for social change
• examined communication theory and advocacy journalism as tools for changing public opinion
• made an analysis of relevant case studies
• use of media in the participants' countries, using print and video material
• become familiar with the various uses of media in different organizations in Israel

Admission Requirements
The workshop is designed for 26 to 30 women and men between the ages of 30 and 50, who hold positions as journalists, television presenters reporting on socio-economic issues, public relations officers in service, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and planners of media strategies for grassroots organizations.
Candidates are expected to have academic training or equivalent professional training in relevant subjects, with at least 7 years of practical experience. They should be presently engaged in promoting socio-economic issues through the media.
Familiarity with Windows and Office and a good command of written and spoken English are essential.

Workshop Procedure
Participants reside at MCTC and the studies are intensive. Five to six days a week are devoted to classroom study and observation visits. Saturdays and/or Sundays are often spent on assignments or on excursions to places of historical or religious interest, or on study visits.
The themes will be presented in the form of lectures and discussions by professionals in the field, university lecturers and researchers. These will be complemented by observation visits to relevant institutions.
Participants are expected to make significant contributions to the Workshop by becoming actively involved and sharing their experiences and ideas with their colleagues. They will be required to make a presentation on their work, describing their organization and specific media-related programs that they are involved in, bringing with them written articles and /or video films. They will also write articles and/or film a short documentary on an issue of relevance to them, as a final group project.
Participants are asked to bring with them audio, video and written material from their organization and their country, which will be used as case study material during the Workshop.

1. The Media, Public Opinion and Politics:
   • Journalism as a force for social change
   • Theoretical models of communication, media effects and charisma
   • Social responsibility and advocacy journalism
   • Increasing citizens’ awareness through media technologies

   • Public relations
   • Use of media in mobilizing support for special interest groups
3. Practical use of Internet for the Media
   • Online databases
   • Digital media
4. Lectures by Participants
   Participants are required to make a presentation during the Workshop, describing programs/ projects under their auspices that are relevant to the Workshop.
5. Observation Visits
   Visits will be made to private and public media institutions and human service organizations.

Application forms should be obtained from Israeli Diplomatic and/or Consular Repreentatives serving the applicant's country and returned to them, completed, and together with recommendations from appropriate authorities, not later than 15th August, 2009, for forwarding to MASHAV and MCTC.

Health Services:
Medical insurance covers medical services and hospitalization in case of emergency. The Health Authorities recommend that visitors to Israel make sure they have been inoculated against tetanus in the last ten years.

Travel:

[Indonesia] The Indonesian Arts And Culture Scholarship 2009

A. Background

The 2009 Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship is the seventh year of the Program that was initially offered and awarded to member countries of the South West Pacific Dialogue (SwPD); Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, and the host Indonesia.

Bearing in mind the success of the program, the offer was expanded over the years to include member countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), ASEAN+3 (China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea), and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), as well as India and South Africa. Last year, Indonesia welcomed new awardees from Azerbaijan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. This year will see new awardees from Austria.

B. Objective

The program aims at demonstrating Indonesia's commitment as an initiator of the establishment of Southwest Pacific Dialogue (SwPD) and as the originator member of ASEAN in advancing the social culture cooperation in the region. The program also has as objective to encourage better understanding amongst awardees of participating countries through Indonesia's immensely diverse art and cultural heritage. Finally, to cultivate a cultural of cooperation, emerging from direct contact and sharing of cultures amongst people involved in the program, leading to thriving diplomatic relations in the region and worldwide.

C. Awardees

Awardees of the 2009 IACS include awardees of regional organizations of the SwPD, ASEAN+3, and PIF, as well as from India, South Africa, Azerbaijan, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, the United States, and this year, Austria.

D. Time

The non-degree arts and culture scholarship is offered for a period of three months.

E. Location

The scholarship awardees will be divided into four groups and assigned to the four arts centers (sanggar) located in Bandung, West Java; Denpasar, Bali; Solo, Central Java; and Yogyakarta, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta.

F. List Of Courses

In Bandung, West Java, awardees will learn Sundanese art and culture namely the production, maintenance and appreciation to angklung; karawitan, wayang golek, and traditional dance of Sunda and West Java. They will also learn Sundanese and Indonesian Language as a component of the culture.

The awardees will learn Javanese art and culture such as the process of batik and its significance; karawitan; traditional Javanese dance; and Javanese language and culture in Yogyakarta dan Solo.

In Bali, awardees will learn Balinese art and culture. Balinese artists will teach Balinese art and culture namely Balinese dance, paintings, carving and gamelan lively. Each art center will also arrange special visit to several historic as well as renowned tourist destinations for participant.

Prior to their placement in the art centers, the awardees will undertake an orientation for a week in Jakarta and will learn issues such as the Aim and Objectives of the

[USA] Erma Byrd Scholarship Program 2009

The Erma Byrd Scholarship Program provides scholarships to individuals pursuing a course of study that will lead to a career in industrial health and safety occupations, including mine safety. This program is designed to increase the skilled workforce in these fields at both the fundamental skills level and the advanced skills level.

The program has a service obligation component, requiring recipients of the scholarship to be employed in a career position directly related to industrial health and safety, including mine safety, for a period of one year upon completion of the degree program.

API Mission Statement
Public Intellectuals are those—academics, researchers, media professionals, artists, creative writers, NGO activists, social workers, public servants and others with moral authority—who are committed to working for the betterment of society by applying their professional knowledge, wisdom and experience. 

The Nippon Foundation Fellowships for Asian Public Intellectuals (API Fellowships Program) is designed to stimulate the creation of a pool of such intellectuals in the region. They aim to promote mutual learning among Asian public intellectuals and to contribute to the growth of public spaces in which effective responses to regional needs can be generated. 



What are the goals?
To create and nurture a community of public intellectuals in the Asian region;


To promote mutual learning among Asian public intellectuals; and


To contribute to the growth of public spaces in which effective responses to regional needs can be generated.

In selecting Fellows, API Fellowships Program will favor projects that address critical issues for the region, which use creative and multidisciplinary approaches, and which have some element of advocacy. 



What are the themes?
- Changing Identities and their Social, Historical, and Cultural Contexts: e.g., the use of historical memory in building regional and national identities; the construction of cultural majorities and minorities; the role of the media and the arts; the dynamics of cultural encounter; the performance of gender, religion, and class roles. 

- Reflections on the Human Condition and the Search for Social Justice: e.g., the distribution of political rights; economic and physical security; the management of social change; the marginalization of peripheral populations; human interaction with the environment. 

- Globalization: Structures, Processes, and Alternatives: e.g., the impact of economic integration on states and societies; human and capital migration; the changing role of borders; the meaning of self-reliance; the global marketing of culture; civil society in the era of globalization. 

What can I do as a project?
The project may take several forms: research paper; film; series of journalistic articles; data gathering; building networks; work of art, etc., but must fulfill three conditions: it must NOT be part of your regular employment; it must contribute to the goals of the API Fellowships Program, and fit with the API themes; and it must have tangible output (research paper, film, photo essay, etc.).

The project must be carried out in one or more of the API Participating Countries, but NOT in your native country or country of residence. The current Participating Countries are: Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.

You will need to find a Host Insitution in the country where you carry out the project. 

Who can apply?
Anyone involved in the production and exchange of knowledge or ideas in line with the goals of API Fellowships Program. This includes academics, researchers, media professionals, artists, writers, NGO workers, social workers, public servants and others who work for the betterment of society. 

General eligibility requirements: 

- Applicants must hold the nationality or proper resident status in one of the five (5) Participating Countries and reside in the country at the time of application; 

- Applicants must attend an interview at a designated date and place; 

- The proposed project by the applicant must take place and should be completed within the period of July 1, 2010 to July 31, 2011 (Note: The fellowship period must be continuous.); 

- Applicants must have a basic knowledge of English or a laungage(s) spoken in the country(ies) where the proposed research and/or activities are conducted; and 

- Applicants must be based in the region/country and will continue to be so in the future. 

API Senior Fellowships and API Fellowships? 

(Categories of Fellowships)
The API Fellowships Program offers two (2) categories of Fellowships: API Senior Fellowships and API Fellowships. The categorization is based essentially on the age of the applicant. 

The API Senior Fellowships are meant for those with an established track record as a public intellectual and who are at least 40 years of age, as of August 31, 2009. The project may be carried out for a minimum of one (1) month to a maximum of twelve (12) months. Up to four (4) API Participating Countries may be visited. 

In addition to the general eligibility above, the applicants for the API Senior Fellowships must: 

- Be 40 years of age or more as of August 31, 2009 (exceptions may be made);

- Have the ability and experience to conduct research projects and/or professional activities in the Participating Countries other than the applicant's native country or country of residence;

- Undertake the proposed research projects and/or professional activities in up to four (4) of the Participating Countries, but in a country(ies) other than the applicant's native country or country of residence;

- Undertake the proposed research projects and/or professional activities for a continuous period of between one (1) and twelve (12) months (Note: The fellowship period must be continuous.); and

- Have the ability, influence, and means to disseminate the results of their research projects and/or professional activities.


The API Fellowships are for those under 40 years of age, as of August 31, 2009. The project may be carried out for a minimum of four (4) months to a maximum of twelve (12) months. Up to two (2) API Participating Countries may be visited. 

In addition to the general eligibility above, the applicants for the API Fellowships must:

- Be under the age of 40 as of August 31, 2009 (exceptions may be made);

- Have the ability and desire to engage in research projects and/or professional activitites in the Participating Countries other than the applicant's native or country of residence;

- Have a strong potential to contribute to their field in the future; - Undertake the proposed research projects and/or professional activities for a consecutive period of between four (4) and twelve (12) months (Note: The fellowship period must be continuous.); and

- Undertake the proposed research projects and/or professional activities in up to two (2) of the Participating Countries, but in a country(ies) other than the applicant's native country or country of residernce. 



What are commitments involved?
After the project year, you must attend the annual API Regional Workshop, which usually takes place in November (for applicants for Fellows Year 2010-2011, it will be in November 2011), and present your results by submitting the papers and other materials. You are strongly encouraged to disseminate the results of your project to a wider audience wherever possible. 

By fulfilling your commitments, you will become a member of the API Community. You will be expected to participate in the activities of the Community, and will have the chance to apply for post fellowship programs. 



What is the API Community?
The API Community is consisted of all past and current recipients of an API Fellowship, and everyone involved in the API Fellowships Program as selection members, program directors, and coordinators. This growing community now members more than 250 persons of varied backgrounds but with a shared commitment. Members meet at national and cross-country functions, as well as through informal networks and collaborative projects at a national and regional level. 

What does the API Fellowships Program provide?
- A stipend and housing allowance for the time spent overseas on the project, the amount varies by country; 
- International transportation costs, for one round trip only; 
- Domestic transportation allowance; 
- Research allowance to cover computer costs, field expences, books, tranlation fees, etc.; and 
- Travel insurance during the fellowship period. 

How are API Fellows chosen?
In each Participating Country, there is a selection committee comprised of established public intellectuals. This committee evaluates all the applications, invites a shortlist for interview, and sends its recommendations to an International Selection Committee which makes the final choice. There are a maximum of six Fellowships for each country per year. The selection procedure is confidential. 

What is timing?
- The deadline for application submission is August 31, 2009.
- Interviews will take place in September/October/November 2009.
- The results will be announced in February 2010.
- The project must be carried out between July 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011.

4. Two Reference Letters
If these are not in English, you must provide an English translation. These letters should be addressed to the API Fellowships Program, and be written within three (3) months before the deadline for submission. 
5. A Project Proposal 
Your project proposal must address to the following questions (in less than five (5) pages): 

What is your project? Please answer in detail. 
Why do you want to carry out this project? 
Why are you the right person to do this project? 
(mention relevant previous experience.) 
How are you going to do it? (methodology) 
What will be the outputs (research paper, video, performance, etc.) and how will you disseminate it? 
How does the project contribute to the goal of API? 
What are your past achievements and future plans as a public intellectual? (organization, advocacy, publication, etc.) 

How will this Fellowship help you? 
Note 1: Project proposals written by persons other than the applicant him/herself are NOT acceptable.

[USA] 2009 Postel Network Operator's Scholarship

The North American Network Operators Group (NANOG) and the American Registry of Internet Numbers (ARIN) have been unique and successful in forming cooperatives for Internet builders in North America and other parts of the world. Senior practitioners from around the world contribute their time to NANOG and ARIN as presenters, teachers and trainers, to produce consistent non-commercial conferences of high-quality. Since 2007, the generosity of an anonymous donor in partnership with the Internet Society (ISOC), financial support to a person from a developing country has been provided allowing participation in the annual Fall NANOG/ARIN meetings. The Postel Network Operator's Scholarship Committee cordially invites suitable applicants to apply for fellowship funding to participate in the October 2009 NANOG/ARIN meetings. Target Audience The Postel Network Operator's Scholarship targets personnel from developing countries who are actively involved in Internet development, in any of the following roles: Engineers (Network Builders) Operational and Infrastructure Support Personnel Educators and Trainers Award Package Successful applicants will be provided with transportation to and from the meetings and a reasonable (local host standard) allowance for food and accommodation. IPL Launches R8m Scholarship Programme in South Africa

The organisers of the DFL Indian Premier League have launched one of the largest community programmes in South Africa by a sport organisation, committing more than R8 million to scholarship programmes around the country.

The tournament’s Chairman and Commissioner Lalit Modi announced the programme last week at a special event at Alexander Sinton High School in Athlone, Cape Town.

The school became the first beneficiary of the Help Educate And Teach (HEAT) programme when headmaster Faziel Parker officially received R100 000 paid into a dedicated scholarship fund at the school.

SAE calls for African Animation Scholarship applicants

The SAE Institute is calling for African candidates for the African Animation Scholarship programme. SAE Cape Town is offering 10 scholarships for sub-Saharan African students and five South African students.

The African Animation scholarship programme is available for applicants from South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Ghana.

The part-scholarship value will be based on approximately 28% of the published tuition fees for a National Certificate in Animation. The duration of the course is a year and it commences on 15 June, 2009.

The Conflict, Security and Development Group (CSDG) at King’s College London together with the Africa Leadership Centre (ALC), is pleased to announce a call for applications for the Peace and Security Fellowships for African Women for 2009/2010. These Fellowships1 are intellectual and financial awards for personal, professional and academic achievements, as well as the recognition of future potential.From October 2009, the Peace and Security Fellowships for African Women will be delivered by CSDG and the ALC, which is a partnership of King’s College London and Kenyatta University, Nairobi.
The ALC aims to build a new community of leaders generating cutting edge knowledge on peace, security and development.

The Fellowships bring together African women in the early stages of their careers to undertake a carefully designed training programme in conflict, security and development. This training is followed by an attachment to an African regional organisation or a Centre of Excellence to acquire practical experience in the field of peace and security. It is intended that this project will train African women to develop a better understanding of African peace and security issues in order to increase their participation in conflict management processes and other areas of security concerns for Africans.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants should:
• Be female citizens of an African country, with valid travel documents.
• Have knowledge of, or experience of women’s rights, gender and development issues.
• Must be able to demonstrate a commitment to contribute to work on peace and security in Africa
• Demonstrate commitment to the core values of the programme and the Africa Leadership Centre.
• Must have a relevant organisational base and be endorsed by an organisation with which they have been involved for at least two years. Exceptional candidates without such organisational ties will be given special consideration.
• Have a demonstrable plan for how to utilise knowledge gained in the Fellowship upon return to their countries and organisations.
• Hold a Master’s degree or Bachelors with an equivalent level of professional experience.
• Must be fluent in spoken and written English.

BURSARIES FOR INCORE SUMMER SCHOOL AND ROUNDTABLE (Deadline 23 April 2009)

INCORE (International Conflict Research Institute) based at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland, and associate site of the United Nations University, is please to offer five bursary places for its 10th International Summer School and roundtable on ‘Evaluating
Research in Divided Societies’. The bursaries are funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The bursaries are specifically available for the Evaluation Module of the Summer School, see http://www.incore. ulst.ac.uk/ courses/ss/ and to attend the
‘Evaluating Research in Divided Societies’ Roundtable that will follow the Summer School.

The bursaries will help widen participation in the Evaluation Summer School Module, but are also part of the ‘Evaluating Research in Divided Societies’ project which INCORE is undertaking in partnership with the IDRC. The project considers the challenges of evaluating research in violently divided societies, and how different evaluation methodologies could be adapted and utilized to deal with the specific ethical, methodological and practical challenges that research in divided societies presents (see extended notes below).

The bursaries will cover:

1. Summer School fee
2. A return economy class flight from country of current residence to Northern Ireland
3. Accommodation costs (including the nights of 14 June 2009 through to 23 June 2009)
4. Per diem for the week

Successful applicants will be expected to participate fully in and attend:

Notes: ‘Evaluating Research in Divided Societies’ Project

In spite of the increased funding for research in violently divided societies in recent decades, specific frameworks for the evaluation of this type of research do not exist. Currently, evaluation of Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding (CPPB) interventions in violently divided societies is largely geared towards program evaluation, rather than evaluation of research. Although there are many similarities between CPPB program evaluation and evaluation of research in violently divided societies, the differences between the two, coupled with the fact that this research is often used to inform CPPB programming decisions,
highlight the need for research-specific evaluation frameworks to be developed. Moreover, given the relationship of research to CPPB programming decisions, there is a pressing need to develop research-specific evaluation frameworks if donor organizations are to continue to justify funding CPPB programs and activities. Therefore, through a literature review, commissioned “think-pieces” and a roundtable meeting of practitioners and academics whose expertise lies in the fields in evaluation and in researching violently divided
societies, the proposed project will consider the challenges of evaluating research in violently divided societies, and how different evaluation methodologies could be adapted and utilised to deal with the specific ethical, methodological and practical challenges that research in divided societies presents.

Submit Your Application for School Year 2009-2010 by May 14

The Nursing Scholarship Program (NSP or “Nursing Scholarship”) is a competitive Federal program which awards scholarships to individuals for attendance at schools of nursing. The scholarship consists of payment for tuition, fees, other reasonable educational costs, and a monthly support stipend. In return, the students agree to provide a minimum of 2 years of full-time clinical service (or an equivalent part-time commitment, as approved by the NSP) at a health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses.

Nursing Scholarship recipients MUST be willing and are required to fulfill their NSP service commitment at a health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses in the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Territory of Guam, the
Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Territory of American Samoa, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, or the Federated States of Micronesia.

Presented by Best Buy, the @15 Short Film Contest is open to filmmakers ages 13-18, and there is no entry fee.
