8 PhD positions in Neuroimaging, Europe

Neurophysics: 8 PhD positions and 2 Post-doc positions in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Germany or Belgium in the field of Neuroimaging.

fMRI is a fast developing technique that permits addressing core questions in cognitive neuroscience in the human brain. The future of this technique resides in pushing hardware to permit ultra-high field scanning at superior spatial resolution, developing advanced data analysis, and combining the technique with other approaches, including EEG, TMS, PET, as well as pharmacology and molecular biology. These goals are pursued by a consortium of 4 partners consisting of Maastricht University (Brain Imaging Centre), Research Centre Juelich (MR Physics), University of Liege (Cyclotron Research Centre) and Glaxo-Smith- Kline (Clinical Imaging Centre London). Funding comes from a Marie-Curie Initial Training Network grant.

Description

To advance research goals at the consortium, we are looking for applicants who (1) show a drive to investigate a core question in cognitive neuroscience which can be theoretical (e.g., perception, attention, memory) or more clinical in nature (e.g., dementia, neurofeedback in locked-in patients); (2) are motivated to use and/or help engineer cutting-edge methods of data acquisition (physics) and data analysis; (3) enjoy the (technical) challenges of working in an integrative, multidisciplinary environment. Relevant backgrounds include engineering, physics, mathematics, advanced statistics and data analysis, molecular biology, software programming, computational modelling, and cognitive neuroscience. The ideal candidate combines skills from several of these disciplines.

Belgium : Research position with a clear intention to complete a PhD at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium

Offer
A three year research position in a project with a clear intention to complete a PhD at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven within four years.
Title
A system for automatic monitoring of human effectiveness on a tugboat (SAFETUG)
Project description and tasksThe port of Antwerp is the 2nd largest port in Europe and the 8th largest container port in the world. Its’ unique position in the centre of Europe along with its speed and reliability make it a popular destination for a large number of cargo ships. Of crucial importance for efficiency and safety in this process is the assistance that tugboats provide to the large cargo ships.
However, there is currently no solution available that can measure online the efficiency of the tug boat captain in performing the boat manoeuvres. In order to reduce the captain performance-related accidents, there is a big need for a system that can identify ineffectiveness of the tug boat crew and act in order to prevent accidents. It is the aim of this project to develop such continuously monitoring and early warning system. The approach will be based on image analysis and analysis of biological responses (such as Heart Rate, Skin Conductance, etc.).
The tasks of the researcher will include setting up of the experiments both in a boat simulator and a real tugboat. Data analysis and mathematical modelling in order to develop models that can be used for monitoring and prediction of the captain’s performance in terms of concentration, sleepiness and stress (human effectiveness).
The research will be conducted in close collaboration with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and two industrial partners, an established tugboat operator and a young, high-tech university spin-off.
Candidate profile
The candidate must have a master’s or equivalent degree in (bio-) engineering (electrical, computer, civil, mechanical, bio-mechanics, medical technology etc.), physics, mathematics or other relevant field.
The candidate should be willing to obtain a PhD degree in the field of bio-engineering. Reporting the project results in international peer reviewed journals is a major task.
The candidate must be able to speak and write English.
Working knowledge of MATLAB, experiences in image processing and/or mathematical modelling are an advantage.

Master of Globalisation and Development Scholarships 2010/11-Graduate Students-Antwerp University-Belgium

The VLIR-UOS offers The Master of Globalisation and Development Scholarships to Graduate Students for the 2010/11 session at Antwerp University in Belgium

The Master’s in Globalisation and Development (GD) approaches the phenomenon of globalisation from an eclectic perspective, considering both the opportunities it creates and threats it poses to development and poverty alleviation in low and middle-income countries, both at the national and the local level.

Most of our students are engaged (or aspire to becoming engaged) in development policy work, professionally and/or as researchers. The objective of the Master’s is to provide them with a solid understanding of the globalisation phenomenon in its multiple dimensions (worldwide markets for goods and services, capital and labour/migration, the planetary challenge of the environment and sustainable development). It also offers them insights and tools to analyse and affect how globalisation impacts on local development and poverty alleviation in low and middle-income countries, taking due account of the complexity of local-global interactions in the multifaceted arenas of globalisation. Successful students shall be able to recognise the opportunities presented by globalisation, and to assess and remedy the risks and threats entailed. Moreover, they shall be able to identify and evaluate policy and programme interventions to exploit opportunities for more effective local and national development in the evolving global context, as well as development interventions aimed at remedying the adverse effects of globalisation on development in general and on the poorer and weaker groups in society in particular, thereby strengthening the agency of the latter.

[Belgium] VLIR-UOS Scholarships 2010-2012

This website provides an overview of the VLIR-UOS funded International Training Programmes and the International Master Programmes.
VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries so that they can follow a master’s or training programme in Belgium. These scholarships cover all related expenses. Every year, VLIR-UOS awards up to 180 scholarships to first-year master’s students and 70 scholarships to training participants.
All programmes are specifically designed for people in positions of responsibility in civil society (e.g. universities, schools, NGOs, local communities, governments).
The target group for master’s programmes comprises students from developing countries, although those from other countries are also welcome. Training programmes are tailored to people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience.
Although these programmes are primarily oriented towards students and professionals from developing countries, they are also open to other people. This website includes all the information you need to apply for a place on a given programme as a self-supporting student or a scholar. It also includes information on course content and application requirements.

VLIR-UOS sincerely hopes that the exchange during your study in Flanders results in partnerships and improved understanding across frontiers, and that the knowledge you acquire will be invested and disseminated in the framework of long-term initiatives in your country of origin.
Application and selection procedure
Applicants applying both for academic admission and for a VLIR-UOS scholarship need to consider both the admission requirements and the scholarship criteria.
Applicants applying for academic admission but not for a scholarship, simply need to consider the admission requirements from the host university where the programme is organised.
The host university is in charge of the academic admission of applications. Study results will be taken into consideration during the selection but relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired insights after return to the country are the most important academic selection criteria. The academic admission requirements are specific for every programme. Consult the requirements from the programme you choose at the list of programmes.
The scholarship selection is carried out by a joint selection commission of VLIR-UOS and the host university. The host university – not the applicant! – forwards the applications for a scholarship to the VLIR-UOS secretariat after the academic admission. The VLIR-UOS scholarship criteria are taken into consideration. These criteria consist of, on the one hand, qualification criteria which need to be fulfilled in any case by all scholarship applicants and, on the other hand, of selection criteria that are evaluated by the selection committee. The VLIR-UOS scholarship criteria can be found in a download at the bottom of this page.
All applicants will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of their application. Applicants, who are accepted both academically and for the scholarship, will be contacted by e-mail by VLIR-UOS and the host university at the latest on 15 May 2010. Applicants who are not selected academically will be informed by the host university.
Scholarship application deadlines:

  • Master’s programme: 1 February 2010
  • Training programme: 1 February 2010 except the training about the Great Lakes (30 November 2009)
This is how you apply
  • Choose ONE training programme or ONE master programme you wish to apply for (http://www.scholarships.vliruos.be/). Notice that YOU CAN APPLY FOR ONLY ONE PROGRAMME FOR THE COMING ACADEMIC YEAR, so choose carefully! You cannot increase your chances by trying to apply for more than one programme, as the system will not allow you to apply for more than one programme. Should you try to apply for more than one programme, your data will appear more than once in our central database and all your applications will be inadmissible;
  • Fill in your data in the tool (prescreening form) provided on this website, at the bottom of the page that gives more information about the programme you choose to apply for from the list of programmes of international training or master’s programmes
  • Upon completion of the input of your data, you will automatically receive an e-mail with a link to the correct application form from the host university that is organising the programme you choose
  • Applications should no longer be sent to the VLIR-UOS Scholarship Office. They should be sent directly to the host university where the programme is organised. Applications sent to VLIR-UOS will not be considered;
  • The application form, together with all required documents (instructions can be found on the application form from the host university), should reach the admission office from the host university where the chosen programme is organised before the application deadline;
