EPSRC MRes/PhD Studentships 2010/11-Newcastle University-UK

The University of Newcastle offers The EPSRC MRes/PhD Studentships in Microcantilever Mass Sensors for Detection of Infectious Organisms for the year 2010/11 in UK

The studentship will involve collaboration between Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologies in the Institute of Cellular Medicine, the Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology and the School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering. The highly interdisciplinary MRes project will be important in allowing the student to experience the laboratory environment in each of the individual disciplines and will provide training in techniques and transferable skills. Initially the MRes project will allow the student to gain experience of bioinformatics approaches to the identification of target proteins on the surface of bacteria with Professor Wipat. The second part of the MRes project will be conducted in the Gallacher laboratory learning microfabrication and photolithographic technologies associated with the manufacture of the microcantilevers which will then be tested towards biomedical diagnostic measurements with Professor McNeil and Dr Manning. The student will therefore gain extremely valuable experience of application driven, cutting-edge multi-disciplinary translational research.
