Global East Asia Program
Three Global East Asia (EASC 360) study abroad courses will be offered during summer 2010 in China, Japan, and Korea. Students who are accepted and complete all course requirements will receive 4 units of upper-division USC credit.
Course Benefits
Students accepted into the program will have all major travel-related expenses paid for by the East Asian Studies Center, including roundtrip international airfare from LAX, basic lodging and meals, and local transportation and entrance fees related to the course while abroad. Note: the 4 units of USC tuition and associated fees will not be covered by the program.

Eligibility
USC undergraduates from any school or major may apply for the Global East Asia program. The ideal candidate will have a solid academic background and will demonstrate a level of maturity appropriate for participation in a study abroad program. Prior multi-cultural experience will also be considered in the application process. At the time of application, students must:

• Have successfully completed (or be in the process of completing) TWO language and/or area studies courses related to the country of study.

  Fall 2009 Korea Courses
• Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  Once accepted into the Global East Asia program, students must register for the summer study abroad course for which they applied and pay the 4 units of tuition and associated fees. The course must be taken for a letter grade.

Outreach
Upon return, students fulfill the program’s outreach requirement by using their experiences abroad to create materials for publication on one of USC’s East Asia online magazines.

UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi (Japan) Co-Sponsored Research Fellowships and Scholarships’ Programme: 2010 Cycle – With a view to keeping alive and honouring the spirit of former Prime Minister Obuchi and his belief in “people building the next era”, 20 fellowships and scholarships per year, for the ninth year, will be awarded to deserving candidates from UNESCO developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research based on scholarships’ aid on one or more of the topics listed below. The aim of the fellowships and scholarships’ aid is to support innovative and imaginative post-graduate research in the areas of development to which former Prime Minister Obuchi was committed and which coincide with areas of particular interest to UNESCO.

A. INTRODUCTION
Mr Keizo Obuchi, former Prime Minister of Japan, passed away on 14 May 2000 at the age of 62. Soft-spoken and charismatic, he was known as a man of integrity, honesty and modesty. He built a reputation as an exemplary official and was a particularly adept negotiator. A member of Japan’s Diet (Parliament) for over thirty years, he served as Japan’s Foreign Minister in 1997 until he was elected Prime Minister in July 1998. Mr Obuchi was known in the international arena for his commitment to development issues and his resolve to put Japan at the forefront of countries involved in consolidating the efforts of the international community to further progress in the social and economic development of humankind.
B. OBJECTIVES OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS’ PROGRAMME
The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships and scholarships’ Programme funded under a Japan Funds-in-Trust project will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity-building and research activities in the following areas which were of particular importance to Mr Keizo Obuchi: 1. Environment (with particular attention to Water Sciences); 2. Intercultural Dialogue; 3. Information and Communication Technologies; and 4. Peaceful conflict resolution. No other research topics will be considered.
C. SCHOLARSHIPS’ ELIGIBILITY
Applicants for these scholarships, a maximum of TWO from each applying National Commission, must meet the following general criteria:

• Candidates under this Scholarships’ Programme must be post-graduate researchers, already holding either an M.A. or M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) and wishing to pursue research work abroad (preferably in their own region) with a view to enhancing knowledge in one of the four specific fields mentioned in paragraph D.1 below. Thus, those who are in the process of completing their Master’s degree must have completed it PRIOR to taking up their Fellowship.
• Scholarships’ Candidates must be persons of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make significant contributions to their country on return.
• Candidates must be no more than 40 years of age. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1970 will not be considered under the Programme.
• The selected Fellow must carry out the research under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution. Confirmation of acceptance from the academic supervisor is imperative.
• Priority attention will be given to:
  • Women
  • Candidates from least developed countries (LDCs)
  • Palestinian researchers
• Candidates of scholarships’ recipients must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study/research.
• Applicants must be in good health, both physically and mentally.

D. CONDITIONS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS’ APPLICATION

It should be understood that upon termination of the Fellowship, the beneficiary must agree to return to his/her home country so that knowledge acquired may be put to good use in local research and training programmes.

Established by congress in 1992, the Udall scholarships honor the legacy Congressman Morris K. Udall. They support students in two areas: students who have demonstrated outstanding potential and a commitment to pursuing careers related to the environment; and Native American and Alaskan Native students who have demonstrated potential and commitment to pursuing careers in tribal policy or tribal health care.

The Said Foundation provide full and partial scholarships to students from Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine or Syria to study for a Master’s degree for one year. The scholarships are co-funded by Goldsmiths who pay a percentage of the tuition fees on behalf of successful applicants.

Eligibility:

To be eligible to apply for a Said Foundation Scholarship you need to:

We are looking for candidates who can maintain a stream of quality research and deliver high quality research in the research Field of Chinese Foreign Direct Investments in Europe with a special focus on their impact on competitiveness of host countries, in particular Switzerland.

The thesis will be written in English. The position is a 100% research Ph.D. position and is affiliate with the Center of Competitiveness. The position is fullly funded for two years by the Swiss National Science Foundation (a third year is not excluded). The salary is competitive and in the range of around 40,000 CHF per year (brutto). The person we hire will have a completed master degree.

Netherland; 2 PhD Positions in Bone Regeneration

The Faculty of Science and Technology (700 faculty members, 1100 students)
offers a range of bachelor and master courses (NanoTechnology, Applied
Physics, Chemical Engineering and Technical Medicine). The faculty’s
research is organized in three of the university’s interdisciplinary
research institutes: MESA+, MIRA, and IMPACT. These institutes increase the
vitality of research by enabling collaboration between programs and
disciplines, by providing shared facilities, and by attracting funding for
joint projects. They also provide a conduit to industrial and other external
partners.

*2 Ph.D positions (4 years) in bone regeneration: development of novel
materials and high-throughput screening of their biological performance*

*Job description*

The department of Tissue Regeneration at the MIRA Institute for Biomedical
Technology and Technical Medicine, University of Twente (
http://tr.tnw.utwente.nl/) is dedicated to develop new strategies for the
treatment of bone and cartilage defects. Recently, our lab developed
synthetic osteo-inductive ceramics, materials which are able to actively
stimulate bone regeneration and which are now clinically evaluated as
alternative for autologous bone grafting. Fueled by this, we are currently
developing a new generation of inductive ceramics by further improving the
inductive potential as well as the handling and mechanical properties.

In this project we are looking for *two PhD students*. One student will
engage in development of a family of novel biomaterials, by modifying their
physico-chemical properties and by the preparation of composites of ceramics
and polymers. The other student will set up a high throughput screening
system to evaluate the bone forming capacity of ceramics in vitro.
Micro-array technology will be used to assess the biological response of
stem cells to ceramics and be correlated to their ability to induce bone
formation in animal models using bio-informatic analysis.

*Requirements*

We are now recruiting two PhD students. One candidate should have a Master’s
degree in chemistry or engineering and affinity with biomaterials and
orthopaedics. The other candidate, with a biomedical background should be
keen to apply molecular biology to solve a medical problem. Expertise in
bio-informatics is recommended.

Outstanding knowledge of scientific English both in speaking and in reading
is required.

*Terms of employment*

The Tissue Regeneration Group, led by Prof. Clemens van Blitterswijk is a
part of the MIRA - Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical
Medicine at the University of Twente (http://tr.tnw.utwente.nl). We offer a
top level research and academic environment with excellent opportunities for
personal development. The assignment is for 4 years, with a go/no-go
assessment at the end of the first year. The candidates are expected to
finish the project with a PhD thesis and disseminate the results through
publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international
conferences. The starting salary will be € 2042, - in the first year and up
to € 2612, - gross per month in the last year.

Erasmus Mundus 2010 Master Scholarship in Animal Breeding

The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG) offers high quality training, both in terms of scientific knowledge and didactic skills, provided by six excellent university groups within the EU. The EM-ABG is a response to the need for highly qualified graduates in the internationally operating area of animal breeding and genetics.

Universities Involved
University groups on Animal Breeding and Genetics within Europe have a long tradition of collaboration. The consortium consists of:

* Wageningen University (WU) (the Netherlands) as co-ordinator
* University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria
* Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU), Kiel, Germany

* Agro ParisTech, France
* Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden
* The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB), Aas, Norway.

The partner universities together form a consortium with a high level of expertise in every core subject in animal breeding and genetics through which EU can provide leadership for the development of a global training program. Moreover, representatives of seven international organisations have joined the International Advisory Board which advices the Consortium on the development of the course.

Fees and Scholarships

The subscription fees are the same, irrespective of the chosen study track

* EU students: EUR 2,000 per academic year / EUR 4,000 for the whole master course
* Non-EU students: EUR 8,000 per academic year / EUR 16,000 for the whole master course

The subscription fees include the following costs:

* Registration in two universities
* Costs of the orientation period and accommodation of the students during this event
* Allocation of a research grant to every student for direct costs related to thesis research and internship
* Participation in the summer activity at the end of the first year

The subscription fees do not include the living expenses or the travel costs to and within Europe.

Scholarships

The EM-ABG course is supported by the Erasmus Mundus Programme of the European Union:

* Scholarships for third-country (non-EU) selected students are offered. The amount for academic year 2010/2011 is EUR 21,000 per year which should cover the living costs, insurances, travel costs and subscription fees
* Scholarships for third-country (non-EU) selected scholars are offered as well.
* The scholarship application is included in the application form (application deadline 15th of January 2010).

For the EM-ABG program starting in August 2010, scholarships for EU students are available:

* The consortium has some scholarships for EU students covering fees.
* Some scholarships covering fees and living expenses are available for EU-students that spend one year at Wageningen University.
* European students can make use of existing Erasmus-Socrates exchange programmes.

USAID – AED (Academy for Educational Development)

Scholarship opportunities to study in the USA for:
• Master`s Degrees in Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management.
• Master`s Degrees in Water and Sanitation.

Training has long been a key component of the U.S. government`s development program in Indonesia. USAID/ Indonesia plans to support the tradition through the Human and Institutional Capacity Development (HICD) program that will provide academic degree training. The HICD program is structured in a way that will help individuals acquire the knowledge, skills, and the capacity to support Indonesia`s development and the achievement of the Government of Indonesia/USAID` s objectives.

USAID has awarded a contract to the Academy for Educational Development (AED), a U.S. non-government organization (NGO) to support the implementation of the HICD program in Indonesia. AED is now inviting Indonesian citizens to study for Master`s Degrees in the USA in
1) Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management and
2) Water and Sanitation.

1. Master`s Degrees in Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management.
Eligible candidates may come from the Ministry of Forestry, Environment, Development Planning, Research and Development, Finance, Economy or other related government institutions including provincial and district level offices and regulators; civil society groups (Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management Associations, NGOs and Foundations) ; or professionals in fields related to sustainable development with international or local organizations who have strong potential for leadership, research, education, journalism and consultancy in the same field.

Candidates with experience working in geographical areas with high biodiversity conservation value will be prioritized. An indicative list would include Kalimantan, Sumatera, Papua, Sulawesi and NTT.
