Each year IMD MBA Future Leaders Scholarships award three scholarships to candidates who demonstrate leadership understanding through an essay competition.

Switzerland : Ph.D. Program at Faculty of Informatics

We encourage applications from highly qualified candidates. Admission to the Ph.D. program is competitive. Each year we receive many strong applications from around the world. Applicants are admitted based on their research interests and experience, potential for success in the program, and compatibility with current needs of the Faculty.


The official language of the Ph.D. program is English. Students must be able to demonstrate fluency in English prior to admission.

The Ph.D. program is governed by regulations adopted by the Faculty.

In order to be admitted, the applicant must have completed a Masters degree in computer science, informatics, or a closely related field prior to joining the program (but not necessarily prior to applying to the program).

Applications for admission to the Ph.D. program are reviewed two times per year. Admission is typically for the Fall semester (commencing in September).

Financial Assistance

This Masters program is accredited by the University of Basel, which will also issue the degree. The title "Master of Advanced Studies" is internationally recognized.



Content

The Master of Advanced Studies in Peace and Conflict Transformation is concerned with the various forms and conditions of peace as well as the obstacles to them. Peace means the absence of war, and much more. Galtung introduced the distinction between direct, structural and cultural violence. Direct violence means hurting and killing; structural violence is the slow death from hunger and preventable or curable diseases caused by extreme inequality and political oppression; and cultural violence consists of the justification of direct and structural violence in education, the media, literature and art, in the form of nationalism, racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination and prejudice. Peace means the absence of those three forms of violence and includes measures both to alleviate and heal past violence as well as to prevent future violence.



This program explores all of these aspects of peace. Its objective is to enable the participants to play an active role in peaceful conflict transformation and in creating a culture of peace. In addition to conveying theoretical knowledge and practical skills for peace work, our program emphasizes also the personal development of the participants. They learn to analyze conflicts, to make prognoses, and to design and implement creative solutions. They learn to detect growing tensions early and know methods to deescalate conflicts and prevent violence. They learn how to mediate between conflict parties and how to encourage conciliation after violence. They learn how to promote peace and development through education and action, and how to facilitate intercultural understanding and cooperation.



Course Format

The educational concept combines interdisciplinary peace research with the teaching of constructive conflict transformation, the practical experience of multicultural coexistence and the development of personal competencies for peace.



The study is divided into 10 modules, addressing the following topics: (1) Introduction to the Methodology of Peace Research; (2) Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding; (3) Regional Conflicts and Field Work; (4) International Relations and International Law; (5) From National to Human Security; (6) Peace Education and Ethics; (7) Human Rights, Gender and Democratization; (8) Sustainable Development and Its Contributions to Peace; (9) Peace Culture and the Media; (10) Development of Key Competencies for Peace Workers.



During the 9 months fulltime study period, the students will learn and work together, building a multi-cultural community. Such a unique learning situation will enable the participants to train in everyday situations what needs to be realized on a global scale: mutual understanding, tolerance, cooperation and the willingness to learn from each other.



The total workload (including thesis) comprises 2100 hours, equivalent to 70 credits according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). It includes lectures, seminars, exercises, presentations, simulations, group activities, excursions, self-study, library research and writing papers. Students write an MAS thesis on a relevant topic of their choice, under the guidance of a faculty member. After successfully completing the course, the participants are awarded the accredited degree of Master of Advanced Studies in Peace and Conflict Transformation, issued by the University of Basel.



The World Peace Academy will consider accepting students wishing to complete their MAS in a longer period of time and/or those wishing to have previously obtained graduate level credits recognized and counting towards their MAS diploma. Fees

CHF 15'000 course fees, including thesis supervision.



Rooms in the Student House (500 CHF per month), meals and health-accident insurance are at the students' expenses.

Requirements

A first university degree (bachelors or equivalent) is required, or equivalent professional experience.

Applicants should have good knowledge of English both written and oral. Expected is a level of English that is usually acquired by studying for at least one year in an English speaking country.

Scholarships will be sought to invite participants from crisis and conflict areas.

[Switzerland] 2 PhD Positions in Soil Environmental Chemistry

We are inviting applications for two PhD student positions in the Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics at ETH Zurich. The successful candidates will investigate the physicochemical structure and biogeochemical reactivity of nano-crystalline Fe(III)-(hydr)oxides formed in the presence of natural organic matter.
In natural environments, the precipitation of Fe(III)-(hydr)oxides is often influenced by dissolved or particulate organic matter such as humic substances or polysaccharides originating from microorganisms and plants. The structure and reactivity of such Fe(III)-precipitates containing significant amounts of organic carbon are of fundamental importance for understanding many biogeochemical processes, including contaminant behavior, carbon sequestration, weathering and soil formation.
One subproject will focus on the molecular and microscopic level characterization of such precipitates and their interactions with trace metals in abiotic systems. In the other subproject we will study their dissolution behavior in abiotic and biotic systems using Shewanella and Geobacter strains, and track speciation changes of trace metals associated with these solids. Both students will apply state-of-the-art analytical techniques, including synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The two sub-projects will be strongly linked and international collaborations are planned.
We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in detailed laboratory research. Previous experience in the fields of mineralogy/crystallography, microbiology, and inorganic chemistry would be beneficial. Applicants should hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in soil chemistry, environmental geochemistry, mineralogy, microbiology or a related basic science discipline. Switzerland : 2 PhD positions in Soil Chemistry/Isotope Geochemistry at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology



We are inviting applications for two PhD student positions based jointly in the Soil Chemistry Group (Prof. Ruben Kretzschmar) and the Isotope Geochemistry Group (Prof. Bernard Bourdon) at ETH Zurich. The research topic will be the development of stable mercury (Hg) isotopes as novel tracers for biogeochemical Hg cycling in soil environments. Mercury is an important pollutant element and Hg isotope ratios provide a promising new tool to trace Hg sources and transformations in natural ecosystems. One PhD project will focus mainly on the investigation of field samples, whereas the other PhD project is dedicated to perform laboratory based experiments. Both project parts will be strongly linked and use the state-of-the-art facilities of the Soil Chemistry and Isotope Geochemistry laboratories at ETH Zurich.

[Switzerland] PhD Studentship Computational Linguistics – University of Geneva

 Applications are invited for a PhD position in the Computational Learning and Computational Linguistics (CLCL) group of the University of Geneva (http://clcl.unige.ch/). The successful candidate will pursue research in
connection with a project on statistical machine translation funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, in collaboration with researchers in Geneva’s Linguistics Department and the IDIAP Research Institute.
Candidates should have a solid background in computer science or computational linguistics. They should have excellent programming skills as well as communication skills in English (and ideally in French as well).
Preference will be given to candidates with a strong interest and/or experience in machine learning or statistical methods, and in computational linguistics or natural language processing. A strong academic record,
excellent analytical skills, and a clear aptitude for autonomous, creative research will be priority selection criteria.
Funding is guaranteed for 3 years through a Swiss National Science Foundation PhD studentship, with a possible extension for a fourth year. Starting salary will be around the range 3300-4400 CHF/month (gross)
depending on the conditions of employment (1 CHF = 0.66 EUR).

[Switzerland] Scholarships from The Graduatu Institute Geneva

The Graduatu Institute Geneva award several scholarships to Master and PhD students based on academic merit and financial need.
There are three categories of scholarship:

  • Full scholarships: with a few exceptions, these are worth CHF 18,000. Recipients are exempt from Graduate Institute tuition fees; however they are still required to pay University of Geneva tuition fees. Some full grants are awarded subject to special conditions (duration of study and/or geographical origin of students).
  • Partial scholarships: the value of these grants varies according to the individual needs of the recipient students. These grants do not cover tuition fees which recipients of partial grants are required to pay.
  • Tuition scholarships: these grants cover tuition fees for one academic year. They are awarded to exceptional students.
Scholarships are awarded for one year, with the possibility of renewal.
Candidates who wish to apply for financial assistance must return the duly completed scholarship request form together with their application form by 15 January 2010.
Current students may also apply for scholarships to assist them with their studies. The deadline for applications is 30 May 2010.

The Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) invites applications for a 2-year full-time research Ph.D. position beginning in 2010. A third year is not excluded.

Job Description:
We are looking for candidates who can maintain a stream of quality research and deliver high quality research in the research Field of Chinese Foreign Direct Investments in Europe with a special focus on their impact on competitiveness of host countries, in particular Switzerland.
The thesis will be written in English. The position is a 100% research Ph.D. position and is affiliate with the Center of Competitiveness. The position is fullly funded for two years by the Swiss National Science Foundation (a third year is not excluded). The salary is competitive and in the range of around 40,000 CHF per year (brutto). The person we hire will have a completed master degree.

Contact address : We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative PhD student candidate (~4 years) to explore the wealth of genomic data from evolutionary perspective using bioinformatics approaches. Our group has a broad range of interests related to the functional evolution of genomes, and actively contributes to international genome analysis consortiums. The specific project will be developed together with the candidate.

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in bioinformatics, including programming skills (or the willingness and drive to acquire them), and a good understanding of molecular biology (preferably with some experience/background in molecular evolution). A Diploma or MSc degree in Biology or Bioinformatics, practical experience in the Unix environment, and fluency in English are required.

The project will be supervised by Prof. E. Zdobnov at the Department of Genetic Medicine and Development of the University of Geneva Medical School. We are also part of the renowned Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, and offer a stimulating research environment with excellent facilities.

The international city of Geneva, described as ‘the smallest of the large capitals’, offers a vibrant city life within easy reach of the picturesque lake and stunning Alps.

The Life Science Zurich Graduate School houses several Ph.D. programs that cover distinct areas of the life sciences. Each program offers research and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree. Accepted students perform their research project in one of the participating research groups of their favorite program, according to their scientific interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are offered throughout the curriculum. The program language is English throughout. Ph.D. studies usually last 3-4 years
Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a Master’s degree or equivalent from a university in a relevant field before starting the Ph.D. program. Applicants accepted for the program will have to register with either the University of Zurich or ETH Zurich, depending on the affiliation of their future research group.

Description : The aim of the EU ITN network is to provide a structured PhD / young researcher training programme on small artery physiology and pathophysiology, including cell biological, molecular biological and physiological aspects. The network consists of 10 partners from 7 European countries – see www.smallartery.eu for partner details and projects offered by each partner – employment conditions will be in accordance with the country of employment.
PhD applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in life sciences (e.g. medical science, biology, biochemistry, biotechnology), physics, chemistry or related fields, with relevant preparative training. [Switzerland] Leadership MBA Program and Scholarship

Redesigned in collaboration with CEOs and HR Directors across Europe, BuAdd Newsiness School Lausanne's new MBA aims to develop future leaders equipped to address tomorrow's business challenges. BSL is ranked in the top fifth of the QS Global 200 Business Schools 2009 listing.

'Leadership is to transform ordinary people into extraordinary people in order to achieve extraordinary things together,' said Daniel Vasella, Novartis CEO and Chairman of the Board. To mark the launch of the program, BSL has established a Future Leader Scholarship to reward a future leader's plan for professional growth by granting him/her with a scholarship to the new MBA program.

Courses:
The Future Leader Scholarship award may be applied to the BSL Executive MBA, Full-time MBA or Flex-MBA degree program. The Executive MBA takes place on Saturdays and is completed in 1½ years. The full-time and flex programs follow a modular format, with the full-time being completed in 1 year. Participants in the part-time, Flex-MBA determine their own study schedule and may take up to 3 years to complete. Tuition for an MBA at BSL is CHF 44,800.
