[USA] International AIDS Society (IAS) and National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) joint fellowship

With the support of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the International AIDS Society (IAS) has established a research fellowship programme focusing on HIV and drug use, with the goal of contributing to advances in the scientific understanding of drug use and HIV, while fostering international collaborative research on HIV and drug use (see FAQ for definition of research areas covered by the fellowship).

The fellowship programme is awarded as a stipend of US$75,000 in two categories: to a junior scientist for 18-month post-doctoral training, or to a well-established HIV researcher for an eight-month-long professional development training at leading host institutes excelling in HIV-related drug use research.

In 2011, up to four fellowships will be awarded. The fellows and their mentors will be invited to attend the IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention (IAS 2011), to be held in Rome, Italy, on 17-20 July 2011, where the awards ceremony will be held.

Eligibility
Post-doctoral training: Junior investigators with a doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, MD) obtained no more than six years before the time of application in the fields of behavioural and social sciences, biological sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, medicine, physics or public health (other disciplines may also be considered) are eligible. Applicants must hold a doctorate degree or equivalent before the start of the fellowship, but not necessarily when applying.

Professional development training: The fellowship is geared towards well-established HIV or drug use scientists who are not currently active in the field of HIV-related drug use research, with a minimum of seven years’ experience beyond post-doctoral level, and with a documented scientific record that includes peer-reviewed publications.

Applications are encouraged from any country, but preference will be given to applicants from low- and middle-income countries. As there are numerous national opportunities for research training within the US, applications from US citizens and permanent residents for fellowships within the US will not be accepted.
All applicants must choose a mentor in an institution different from their current institution (see FAQ for details).
Applicants must be able to start their fellowships before 1 June 2012.
Applications must be completed in English.
Application
Applications for the 2011 programme must be submitted by the prospective fellow through the online application form that will be available on the IAS website from 8 December 2010 until 10 February 2011 (until midnight CET). Please read the application guidelines before applying online. Applicants will be asked to detail their research goals, provide an abstract of their proposed project, and write a research plan for the duration of their fellowship. The research project must be related to HIV and drug use, e.g., narcotics and alcohol (for more information see FAQ).

Applicants must have chosen an appropriate mentor who holds an established post for the duration of the fellowship and has a track record in research and training in HIV and drug use. Applicants must confirm that the host institute and the mentor can guarantee that space and facilities will be made available for the prospective fellow if he/she is successful in obtaining the fellowship.

After the applicant submits his/her application, the mentor must then complete his/her part of the application, specifying the support that he/she will provide to the applicant, and assess the impact that the fellowship will have on the applicant’s future career.

Selection
Applications are screened by the IAS to ensure that they are complete and eligible. All eligible applications will be independently assessed by at least two external experts (review and grading criteria can be found in the FAQ).

Once applications have been reviewed, based on the reviewers’ assessments, the fellows will be selected. Selection is based on grades, reviewers’ comments, and the maximum impact each fellowship would bring to the treatment and/or prevention of HIV/AIDS and drug use, as well as to collective capacity building in the recipient’s home country.

The outcome of the selection will be made public approximately 10 weeks after the closing date. Fellows will be immediately notified by email. The fellowships must be started any time between 1 August 2011 and 1 June 2012.

Conditions
Duration: Fellowships must be served continuously for the duration of the award. Fellows must start their research before 1 June 2012.

Terms: The award of US$75,000 will be made available to the host institution, which will provide the stipend to the fellow in accordance with its usual regulatory procedures. The stipend may cover only the cost of living, personal expenses (e.g., health and accident insurance) and one return journey to the country of origin during the fellowship period. The stipend may not be supplemented with funds from the NIH or any other US federal agency or another fellowship, regardless of the source. The fellow may receive supplemental support from other sources, providing that the additional funds do not impose a service and do not exceed a maximum of US $10,000 per year.

Work permit: The mentor and the host institution are responsible for supporting the fellow in obtaining the necessary visa and work permit, insurance and ethical approval to conduct his/her research in accordance with national requirements and the host institution’s regulatory procedures.

Reporting: Fellows and mentors must provide intermediary progress reports to the IAS every six months during the fellowship period, based on the template they will receive, as well as a final fellowship report, including an expenses report.

Before applying, applicants are advised to read the full IAS-NIDA fellowship Policies & Procedures.

[Netherlands] PhD in Reconstruction of Metabolic Networks

Wageningen University and Research centre is looking for a PhD or Post-Doc candidate who will work on one of the Systems Biology projects on Reconstruction of metabolic networks.

We are interested in candidates with a background in the exact sciences (statistics, mathematics, physics, (theoretical) biology), who are eager to work on a project in the life sciences.
The duration of the project is three years for a Post-Doc and four years for a PhD.

This position is embedded in a project aiming at unraveling flavonoid networks in Tomato. Amongst other factors, these networks are, responsible for Tomato taste and as such highly relevant in breeding new Tomato species. In this project, experimentalists and modelers strongly cooperate. The present position is on the modeling side and focuses on reconstructing the metabolite networks from the data generated in this project. To that end existing methods could be applied, but also new methods have to be developed.

Network reconstruction is one of the central research themes in Systems Biology, since biological systems at nearly all levels of aggregation can be modeled in terms of networks. In the present project, the measured metabolite levels form the observable expressions of the network components. The purpose is to reconstruct both the topology of the underlying network and to estimate the interaction strengths between the components. To that end the candidate should develop and apply both statistical and mathematical techniques. The combination of these approaches is believed to lead to most powerful methods in network reconstruction.

From the statistical point of view, various approaches are possible, like multivariate multiple regressions under constraints and penalties form a first type of statistical models to study. Alternatively, graphical models and random fields could be used. An important item will be how to incorporate prior biological knowledge. For this purpose, Bayesian techniques will be needed to be studied.
From the mathematical point of view, the emphasis is on describing the dynamics of networks in terms of differential equations. The challenge is to find the structure of these equations from the measured time series in order to detect the topology of the network and the interaction strengths. Parameter estimation by fitting possible models to the data is an inherent part of the work.

We ask
We are especially interested in candidates who want to apply their skills in and knowledge of one of the exact sciences to a life science setting, and who are interested to combine mathematical and statistical approaches.

MSc or PhD in Mathematics, Statistics,,Physics, (Theoretical) Biology
Affinity to modeling

[Netherlands] PhD Positions for the research on insect-plant interactions of the Laboratory of Entomology and Wageningen University

Food-web ecology has shown that plant responses to herbivory constitute a major force in structuring insect communities. Herbivores that induce responses in plants affect the plant phenotype and thereby indirectly, i.e. mediated through the plant, affect other community members. Such plant responses to environmental changes in terms of herbivore attack have been extensively characterized for pair wise interactions using transcriptomics on molecular genetic model plant species. Yet, food webs include multiple interacting organisms at several trophic levels that cause combinations of stresses that interact in inducing a response in plants.
This project will address interactions among 4 trophic levels in a plant-insect system. The project will address the mechanisms that underlie the trophic interaction network that provides hyperparasitoids with cues to locate their otherwise inconspicuous hosts (primary parasitoids) and how this even allows hyperparasitoids to smell abundance of their hosts from plant-derived cues, using ~omics tools.

We ask
An MSc degree in Biology or Plant Sciences with a multidisciplinary profile. You should be a molecular/chemical ecologist having experience with investigating arthropod behaviour, statistics and molecular techniques. Team player with demonstrable experience in collaboration with ecologists, molecular biologists and/or entomologists. Excellent communication skills.

We offer
A full-time position (38 hours), initially for 1 year after which a go/no go decision will be taken on extension with another three years.
Gross salary per month € 2042,= in the first year rising to € 2612,= per month in the fourth year, for a fulltime appointment.

Closing date for applications: 9 October 2010

For the first year that the EMMC is running the course is limited to 35 European students and 15 non-EU students, so in general 10 per consortium university.

For admission with a scholarship, you need to meet the following criteria:

A BSc in Biomedical, chemical, electronical or mechanical engineering, or applied physics. In detail the Bachelor program must demonstrate that the following criteria are attained:
Basic knowledge and understanding of mathematics, physics, chemistry
Applying, integrating knowledge and understanding of mathematics, physics, chemistry
The capability to communicate effectively in English, both in written and in verbal form.
An ability to conduct scientific research individually on a distinct, well described topic
An ability to design products that can solve problems in a systematic way
The applicant needs to send in the original of the transcript of records (or certified copy) or degree certificate. Applicants in the final year of their Bachelor’s study may also apply. They should send in an updated version of their transcript of records. They will be accepted on the condition that they will have met with all requirements by the start of the CEMACUBE-course in September.
Degree certificates, originating from other than the consortium universities, will be judged by the consortium secretariat that use lists of universities with a sufficient level of quality.
An excellent command of the English language is a prerequisite for participation in the CEMACUBE programme.
Academic excellence as is evident from the awarding institution of the first degree, the grades obtained and the content of two letters of reference.
Well-written and well-considered motivation letter to follow the CEMACUBE-course
Relevant work experience to follow the CEMACUBE-course successfully as is made evident in a curriculum vitae.
A completed application form received, which includes besides the above mentioned documents, one passport-sized photo and a copy of the passport.

All other students should follow a repair programme prior to this Master's course

EU-regulations that are installed to ensure a geographical balance of the selected students require that no more than two students from the same country can be awarded an Erasmus Mundus scholarship

Due to the high tuition fees in Dublin, we will limit the number of students for Dublin to 14%. The other students will go to the other 4 universities (a mean of 21% per university).
Erasmus Mundus Masters are funded by the European Union. Together with 18 other Master programmes, CEMACUBE has in 2009 been selected as a new Erasmus Mundus Masters programme that will be funded for five years (and with possible extension of another 5 years). The competition was fierce; only about 20% of the proposals for new Erasmus Mundus Masters have been awarded funding.

Erasmus Mundus aims to enhance the quality of higher education in Europe, and to promote dialogue and understanding between people and cultures through cooperation with third-world countries. In addition, it contributes to the development of human resources and the international cooperation capacity of higher education institutions in non-European countries by increasing mobility between the European Union and these countries.
