USA; Postdoctoral Fellow Breast Tumor Microenvironment

A POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP is available in Paraic Kenny’s laboratory at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. The laboratory is focused on the use of complex 3D culture models of the breast tumor microenvironment to identify, dissect and target key pro-tumorigenic signaling proteins produced by various cell types of the tumor microenvironment. The postdoctoral fellow will work on a funded research project to define the signaling factors that macrophages use to drive human breast cancer cell proliferation and invasion.

Recent PhD graduates are preferred. Qualified individuals must have strong laboratory expertise in molecular and cell biology, publications in English language journals, and be prepared to work in a highly competitive environment. Ability to work independently, demonstrated creativity, and very high motivation are expected.

GERMANY; PhD position available at the Courant Research Center Evolution of Social Behavior, Göttingen University

1 PhD position available at the Courant Research Center Evolution of Social Behavior, Göttingen University, Germany Applications are invited for a PhD project to work on competition and cooperation in male Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) in their natural habitat in Morocco. The project will focus on male reproductive competition and consequences for social relationships and
stress physiology in Barbary macaques. The study will be carried out in the oak and cedar forest near the city of Azrou, in the Middle Atlas Mountains, Morocco. The field site is run by Dr. Bonaventura Majolo (University of Lincoln, UK) and Prof. Mohammed Qarro (Ecole Nationale Forestière d’Ingénieurs, Morocco). Three habituated troops are currently available to study at the field site. Accommodation will be in the city of Azrou, in a fully furnished flat with internet connection. Azrou can be easily reached from Fez international airport (around Km60 from Azrou), but also from Rabat-Sale’ or Casablanca airports. All the necessary equipment for field work is available on site (binoculars, weather station, hand-held computers and software for data collection, and equipment for playback experiments). 

Initial funding is available (9-12 months depending on the starting
date) and we are currently seeking additional funding up to three more years.

The candidate should hold a master’s degree in Biology or Physical
Anthropology and have a strong background in Behavioral Ecology or Animal Behavior. Anticipated start of fieldwork is August 2009 and data collection will last approximately 1.5 years. The work at the field site is physically very demanding. The field site is between
1,400 and 1,900 meters a.s.l. and weather conditions can vary
dramatically across the year, with temperature ranging between 35ºC to -5ºC and snow in the winter months. Hence, interested individuals should be physically fit and have previous experience with field work in remote areas. He/she should enjoy working in a team as well as individually and independently. Data collection will include detailed behavioral sampling as well as collection of fecal or urine samples for subsequent hormonal analyses. Thus, prior experience in behavioral observation of social animals in the wild will be a pre-requisite. Ability to speak (and write) English is mandatory, knowledge of French and/or Arabic beneficial. Following the field period, behavioral and hormonal analyses will be conducted at the University of Göttingen, Germany. The IRTG Stochastic Models of Complex Processes Berlin-Zurich is offering several scholarships for graduate students in Berlin starting October 2009. Candidates should have obtained (or be about to obtain) a Diploma or M.Sc. degree in mathematics or closely related fields with results significantly above average, and intend to pursue graduate studies in mathematics within the research area of the IRTG. The IRTG offers, besides the opportunity to do supervised research, a rich graduate programme consisting of graduate courses, seminars, and guest lectures. Fellows are required to actively participate in this programme.

Scholarships are tax-free and carry a monthly stipend of € 1203.– plus family allowance.

They are initially awarded for two years, subject to renewal to up to 3 years. All graduate students will be expected to work for a Ph.D. degree at one of the participating universities in Berlin and Potsdam. They are expected to spend 6 months at the partner institutions in Zurich, for which additional financial support will be provided.

PhD Position in Mechanical Engineering on “Human Posture and Movement Prediction Based on Musculoskeletal Modeling”, Aalborg University

The PhD stipend is available within the general study programme “Mechanical Engineering”. The study will be conducted in close cooperation with researchers at the Department of Health Science and Technology.

The stipend is affiliated with the research project AnyBody Inside, co-financed between the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation, AnyBody Technology A/S and Aalborg University. The purpose of the project is to investigate and develop reliable methods for prediction of natural postures and movements by means of musculoskeletal models of the human body. The project is therefore inter-disciplinary in nature comprising elements from mechanics, numerical mathematics, software development and physiology.

The hypothesis of the project is the idea that voluntary postures and movement strategies in humans are guided by a desire to optimize performance according to some criteria. It is the purpose of the project to identify these criteria, cast them into a mathematical form and implement them in musculoskeletal models using the AnyBody Modeling System.

The study programme will likely contain the following items:

* Literature review of state-of-the- art in the field.
* Biomechanical analysis of the problem resulting in candidate criterion functions and constraints.
* Innovation of models and examples suitable to investigate different formulations of the optimization problem.
* Experiments and simulation.
* Conclusions and final implementation of the methods.

Key topics: Musculoskeletal simulation, posture and movement prediction, optimization.

Applicants for the PhD position should hold a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, mathematics, numerical methods, software engineering (or a related field) and should have an interest in physiology and biomechanics. A good command of oral and written English is also required.

Qualification requirements:
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

Applications are invited for one PhD studentship in video visualization, which is an exciting and challenging research area in visual computing. The position is for three years, and the research will be conducted within the scope of an interdisciplinary project funded by EPSRC. The main technical aspect of this studentship focuses on human factors in video visualization, and other relevant aspects may include video processing, visualization design and several applications. The post-holder will be expected to work as a team as well as engage in collaboration with other research groups in the UK and abroad. The studentship will be based at Computer Science, together with a team of three other researchers in the project. The PhD programme will be jointly supervised by Professor Ian Thornton and Professor Min Chen.

Suitable applicants should possess a good Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Psychology, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or a related subject (such as Mathematics and Physics).

USA; Postdoctoral Fellow in Biomolecular NMR / Structural Immunology

The Baker lab at the University of Notre Dame has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral fellow in biomolecular NMR. Project goals are to study the influence of molecular flexibility in the cross-reactivity and specificity of T cell receptors of the cellular immune system (see Armstrong and Baker (2008), Biochem J 415, 183-196). A PhD in biochemistry, biophysics or related area is required, as is a strong record of research accomplishments. Training and experience in protein NMR strongly desired. Some immunology background will be helpful but not necessary. Willingness to engage and collaborate with other structural biologists, biophysicists and immunologists in the laboratory is also necessary.

For example, characterizations of flexibility will be related to crystallographic structures, measurements of binding kinetics and thermodynamics, and functional assays reporting on specificity, cross-reactivity, and antigen potency. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is superbly equipped for biomolecular NMR, with multiple spectrometers dedicated for protein research, including an actively shielded 800 MHz Bruker instrument with a cryoprobe.

The scheduled experiments have important theoretical implications in the field of confined polymers. Moreover, this subject is also very relevant for possible applications in the field of adhesives and coatings.

Preference will be given to applicants (M.Sc./Diploma) in Physics, Chemistry or related fields. Experience with scanning probe microscopy, surface preparation and analysis, polymer physics and chemistry are advantageous.A basic knowledge of German language would be appreciated, English is required. [Malaysian] AMCHAM-MACEE 2009 Scholarship

American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) are pleased to announce the competition for the AMCHAM-MACEE 2009 Scholarship. AMCHAM created a scholarship endowment program in 1998 to benefit deserving Malaysian students seeking to pursue their undergraduate studies in the United States.
