Germany:Ph.D. Studentship-Molecular Cancer Biology

The Department of Internal Medicine III (Hematology, Oncology, Rheumatology, and Infectious Diseases) at the University Medical Center Ulm offers a highly interactive and collaborative scientific environment with a strong focus on translational oncology research. Among the positions available is a Ph.D. studentship in the laboratory of Dr. Claudia Scholl and Dr. Stefan Fröhling (http://ping.fm/LuXiI).

Ph.D. Studentship – Molecular Cancer Biology

initially limited for 2 years. There is a possibility of an employment extension subsequently. The vacancy can be filled immediately. The integration of the successful applicant into the International Graduate School in Molecular Medicine Ulm (http://ping.fm/Eh4Ie) is possible.

Research projects will include:
- The characterization of the mechanism(s) underlying the recently discovered synthetic lethal relationship between transforming KRAS mutations and suppression of STK33 in a broad spectrum of human cancers (Scholl, Fröhling et al. Cell 137:821-834, 2009).
- The identification of novel markers of STK33 activity that can be used for the assessment of small-molecule modulation of STK33 function.
- The development of targeted therapies based on insight into disease pathogenesis.

Your personal profile:
- We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in cancer biology to join a research group interested in the molecular pathogenesis of hematopoietic and epithelial malignancies.
- Applicants should hold a degree in biology, biochemistry, genetics, or a related field and have strong laboratory and analytical skills.
- Experience in molecular biology, cancer genetics, functional genetic approaches, or protein biochemistry is preferred.
