Scholarship scheme for academic exchange between
EU & Candidate countries and
Western Balkan countries



The scholarships for undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral students and staff are financed by the European Commission. The scholarship will cover travel, insurance, possible tuition, living expenses and housing. Go abroad - break new grounds!

Who can apply

Students and staff members of all partner universities, both from the Western Balkan countries and EU & Candidate countries, as well as other nationals of Western Balkan countries, can apply for scholarships. Please note that exchange between two EU/Candidate Countries and within the Western Balkans is not possible.

In order to be eligible applicants:

• (if applying as outgoing students from an EU or Candidate Country) must have the nationality of one of the eligible European countries;
• must have sufficient knowledge of languages according to the requirements of the individual host universities
• must be registered at one of the partner European institutions or,
• for post doctorate mobility only, must have obtained their doctorate in the last two years and must have the support of one of the European partner
universities to carry out a postdoctorate mobility. This can be for research, training and attending highly specialized courses.
• undergraduate students must have successfully completed at least one year of studies at higher education level

How to apply

There will be two calls for application. The current 1st call will be open from July 19 - September 1, 2009 at 11:59 pm. Students and scholars will be notified of the selection results of the 1st call by September 21, 2009, the latest.

The second call will be open from September 15, 2009 at 12:01 am - October 29, 2009 at 11:59 pm. Students and scholars will be notified of the selection results of the 2nd call by end of November 2009, the latest.

The first call will be open for students who are planning to start their mobility in winter term 2009/2010. The second call will be open for students who are planning to start their mobility in spring term 2010 or by September 1, 2010, the latest.

Application procedure

Step 1: Please study all the information carefully before starting the application procedure!

Step 2: Find out which target group you belong to.

Step 3: Select the host institution(s). Please get informed concerning study, research, teaching or training possibilities at the host institution(s) of your choice.

Step 4: For target group 1 exchange students only: Check the recognition requirements of your home university and acquire your learning agreement. For further information please contact the relevant person in charge at your home university.

For target groups 2 & 3 exchange students only: If you have any questions about learning agreements and/or recognition requirements at your home university, please contact the relevant persons in charge.

Step 5:
Register for the online application.

Step 6: Fill out the application form and upload all necessary documents. All documents attached in electronic form will also have to be handed in as original signed documents at the host institution once you got selected.

Step 7: In case you belong to Target Group 1, your home university will review the applications. In case you belong to Target Groups 2 and 3, the University of Graz will review the applications. Accepted applications will be sent to the host universities for the selection procedure.

Step 8: Applications will be evaluated by the selection team of the respective host institution. In case a nomination to the university of first choice is not possible, the application will be evaluated by the host university of second choice.

Step 9: The selection committee will decide on the definite allocation of the scholarships.

Step 10: Students and scholars will be notified by mid September, 2009.

Step 11: Selected students need to apply for a visa in their home country by contacting the embassy of the host country.
Selected scholars need to apply for visa. Please contact your home university already when the call for applications is still open!

Step 12: Selected students need to send the original documents of their application to the host university.

Step 13: A list of nominated students will be sent to the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) and will include a list of further potential students.

Step 14: The host university will be responsible for further processing of the mobility (admission, visa, accrediting degrees, accommodation, tuition etc.)

All students and scholars have to start their studies/research before September 1, 2010.

Online Application

The online application consists of two steps. Step 1 needs to be completed by clicking the „Finish step 1“ button before it is possible to proceed to step 2 where documents have
to be uploaded and the host university chosen. Note that no more changes are possible within step 1 once it has been finished by clicking the button.

Once you click on “Finish application” after the completion of both steps, you will not have access anymore to your application and no more changes will be possible.
So please make sure to carefully review your application before hitting the submit button.
