IAS Early Career Fellowship 2010-11


About:
The Warwick Institute of Advanced Study (IAS), established in 2007, is dedicated to enriching the University’s research environment and forms an integral part of the University Strategy Vision 2015. The main goals of the IAS are to enhance opportunities for international engagement with Warwick, emphasising links with the University’s strategic partners; to promote research and interdisciplinary collaborations across all Warwick faculties; to enrich the research environment for postgraduate students and early career scholars; to develop the University’s impact agenda, and to increase public engagement with Warwick research nationally and internationally. The IAS supports a cluster of funding initiatives which are directed towards achieving these goals.

Eligibility:
The competition is open to Warwick students registered for a research-based doctorate at Warwick (excluding the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology) who have submitted or expect to submit their thesis for examination between 1 April 2010 and 30 September 2010 inclusive. Candidates should not be in full-time employment during the Fellowship, but may hold contracts of up to 50%, either at Warwick or outside the University. Continuation of the Fellowship beyond the doctoral examination is contingent upon successful completion of the viva (ie a recommendation to award the PhD or other doctoral degree with or without minor corrections, but NOT a recommendation to resubmit/referral). Candidates are required to live within a reasonable distance of the University, so as to participate in IAS and Graduate School activities as appropriate. Candidates must be eligible for residence and work in the UK during their award.

Duration of Awards:
Fellowships will be awarded for a period of up to 6 months. Shorter Fellowship periods can be arranged to accommodate non-Home/EU candidates’ visa status.

Value and Number of Awards:
It is expected that there will be a maximum of sixteen (16) Fellowships per academic year.
Fellows will be paid a small bursary for the duration of the Fellowship. This will be calculated using the Research Council stipend (£13,590 per annum full-time in 10/11) as a guide, prorated to take account of the Fellow’s other paid work commitments. So, for example, a Fellow who had a part-time job for approximately 17 hours per week would be eligible for an award at 50% of the Research Council rate which would amount to £566.25 per month. This would be the maximum award available. The maximum total award is £3,397.50 for 6 months. In addition Fellows may claim up to £150 towards research expenses (eg towards costs of attending a conference). The spend must be agreed in advance with the IAS Director.
Fellows will have access to the Warwick Library and Wolfson Research Exchange and to hot-desking, office and seminar room facilities at the IAS.

Application Procedures:
Applications must be made electronically, using the IAS application form. Completed applications will comprise:
1. a completed application form received by the deadline
2. a project statement of up to 1,000 words
3. a statement of up to 150 words on how their research would benefit from/contribute to the IAS
4. the CV of the applicant
5. 2 letters of reference
6. signatures of the applicant’s Head of Department and Departmental Administrator.
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the application is complete with the academic references and reaches the Institute of Advanced Study by the closing date. Late or incomplete applications submitted will not be considered.

Selection Criteria and Process:
Applicants will provide a narrative statement of up to 1,000 words outlining their proposed use of the time and facilities available to advance their postdoctoral research careers. Additionally, they will provide a statement of up to 150 words describing the relevance of the IAS context for their research development.
Selection will be made on the basis of:
A. Academic Excellence (CV, two academic references, including one from PhD supervisor) – the following will be taken into account:
1. Previous publication record, if any, arising from the doctoral research
2. Conference papers, if any, based on the doctoral research
3. Grants and fellowships awarded during postgraduate career
4. Supervisor’s report
5. Length of time as a doctoral candidate (priority will be given to students who submit their thesis without extensions, excluding approved periods of leave).
B. Quality of proposal, including:
1. Intellectual ambition and scope of proposed programme of activities
2. Ability of the proposed programme of activity to advance the candidate’s postdoctoral research career
3. Supervisory/support arrangements available at Warwick to enhance the applicant’s research
4. Feasibility (ability to accomplish stated goals within the Fellowship period).
C. Applicant’s ability and willingness to situate his/her research project within the broader interdisciplinary research framework of the IAS.
Applications will be considered by a panel of senior Warwick academic staff including the IAS Director and the Chair of the Board of Graduate Studies.

Deadline:
The closing date for the next round of applications is 12:00 noon on Monday 5 July 2010. Results of the competition will be announced in mid-August 2010 and successful candidates are expected to take up the award on or after 1 October 2010. Postgraduate doctoral research students who have submitted or expect to submit their thesis between 1 April 2010 and 30 September 2010 inclusive are eligible to apply. Candidates awarded a Fellowship who do not meet this requirement will not be able to take up the Fellowship, although they may re-apply in a subsequent application round.

Conditions of taking up the award:
Bursaries will be continued beyond the doctoral examination date only when the viva is successfully passed (ie has resulted in a recommendation to award the PhD or other doctoral degree with or without minor corrections, but NOT to resubmit/be referred).
Most Fellows will take on additional part-time work; Fellows must normally commit to undertake no more than 20 hours per week of other employment during the tenure of their award. Exceptions must be negotiated in advance, and may result in a reduction in the value of the award.
Fellows should make best use of IAS and University facilities, for example through using the hot-desking and office space available in the IAS, ePortfolios, the Library and careers advice through specialist Careers Consultants. Fellows are expected to attend the IAS on a regular basis (including the Fellows’ fortnightly interdisciplinary seminars) and to maintain systematic contact with the nominated supervisor(s) during the tenure of the award.
International students must ensure that they do not contravene the regulations of their visa and that acceptance of the award does not contravene any contractual obligations to an employer or sponsor.
Fellows undertake to complete a progress report at the end of the first three months, and a final report at the end of the award period.
It is expected that candidates will acknowledge, in their publications, support received from the Institute of Advanced Study Early Career Fellowship.

Ramanujan Fellowship

About:
Nominations are invited for the ‘Ramanujan Fellowships’ recently instituted by the Government of India. The fellowship is meant for brilliant scientists and engineers from all over the world to take up scientific research positions in India, especially those scientists who want to return to India from abroad. The fellowships are scientist-specific and very selective. The Ramanujan Fellows could work in any of the scientific institutions and universities in the country and they would be eligible for receiving regular research grants through the extramural funding schemes of various S&T agencies of the Government of India.

SCOPE:
All areas of science (in the broadest terms) will be covered by this fellowship.

ELIGIBILITY:
i) The fellowship is open to brilliant scientists and engineers from all over the world who are below the age of 60 years.
ii) The applicant should possess a higher degree or equivalent, such as Ph.D. in Science/Engineering, Masters in Engineering or Technology/MD in Medicine, etc. and have adequate professional experience.
iii)These Fellowships are very selective and only those who have a proven/outstanding tract-record as evident from their research publications and recognitions would be eligible.
iv)The candidate has to opt for either this fellowship or his present position/fellowship, if any.

DURATION:
The duration of the fellowship will be initially for five years.

NATURE OF SUPPORT:
The value of the fellowship will be Rs. 75,000/- per month.
Each Fellow will, in addition, receive a contingency of Rs. 5.00 lakh per annum for conferences and other expenses.
The Ramanujan Fellows will be eligible for receiving regular research grants through the extramural funding
schemes of various S&T agencies of the Government of India.

METHODOLOGY FOR SELECTION:
1)The scientists can choose to work at any S&T institution including University Departments or other academic
Institutions and National Laboratories in India, provided the Institution at which they wish to pursue research
is willing to provide the necessary R&D, administrative and basic infrastructural support to facilitate research.
2)The availability of Ramanujan Fellowships will be advertised by various academic and research Institutions
on their websites in order to receive applications from interested scientists and technologists. The Institutions will subsequently submit their recommended nominations to the Department of Science & Technology. Institutions may consider setting up appropriate mechanisms to scrutinize and recommend the nominations.
3)Individual scientists and technologists can also approach the institutions for hosting them for the Fellowship
and forwarding their nominations to DST for the Fellowship.
4)Selection of Ramanujan Fellows will be made periodically by an empowered Search-cum-Selection
Committee specially appointed for the purpose.
5)The nominations of scientists and technologists by the Institutions would be received throughout the year.
There is, thus, no last date for this scheme.

About:
Nominations are invited for the JC Bose National Fellowships, newly instituted by the Government of India. The fellowship is meant to recognize active scientists and engineers for their outstanding performance and contributions. The Department of Science & Technology will administer this scheme. The fellowships are scientist-specific and very selective.

Scope:
All areas of science (in the broadest terms) will be covered by this fellowship.

Eligibility:
1)The fellowship is open to Indian Nationals residing in India who are below the age of 60 years.
2)The applicant should possess a higher degree or equivalent: namely Ph.D. in Science/Engineering, Masters in Engineering or Technology/MD in Medicine, etc. and must have carried out several years of work in the specific area.
3)These Fellowships are meant for those who have a proven track-record as evident from their research publications and recognitions.
4)The candidate must have a regular position in an Institute /Organization and should be engaged in research. If he /she is availing any other fellowship, he/she will have to opt for only one of the fellowships.

IIAS Award of Fellowship

About:
Because of the common vision of President S. Radhakrishnan-the remarkable philosopher-statesman-and Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Indian Institute of Advanced Study Society was registered on 6 October 1964 under the Registration of Societies Act of 1860. Exactly fifty-four weeks later, the Institute was formally inaugurated by President Radhakrishnan himself.
Under the Memorandum of Association, the primary objective of the Institute was ‘to provide an environment suitable for academic research’ in the humanities, and the social and natural sciences. In his inaugural address, Professor Radhakrishnan emphasized that a crucial question for the Institute to engage with was ‘whether what has come down to us as truth is in fact true or requires some kind of modification’. ‘We should not’, he said, ‘be prisoners of the status quo’.

Eligibility:
Fellowships to the Institute are advertised nationwide. Selection of Fellowships are made through committees set up by the Governing Body consisting of experts in different areas of research, to assist the Director in determining the academic merit of scholars and their projects. There is a multiplicity of approach in selection of fellows. The selection is not necessarily confirmed to those who respond to advertisements. It is open to the Institute to consider the names of eminent scholars suggested by the Director of the Institute, the members of the Governing Body, and the Society. Talents are also identified through efforts on a regional and sub-regional basis. The final decision for the award of fellowships is taken by the Governing Body of the Institute on the recommendation of a common committee for all areas. The Governing Body can invite any eminent scholar to become a Fellow of the Institute.

Duration of Fellowship:
The duration of Fellowship normally ranges from three months to two years. The initial assignment is given for only a year, and the Governing Body can extend the term of a fellow even upto three years.

Facilities:
1. Fellows are provided modestly furnished rent free residential accommodation in the cottages which are part of Rashtrapati Nivas Estate.
2. Telephones are provided whenever possible through the EPBAX system of the Institute.
All the Fellows are also provided :
1 A study which they may have to share with one or two other fellows,
2 Computer and e-mail facilities
3 Stationary items (to a limited extent)

Fellowship Grant:
The Institute protects the salary of scholars in service during the term of their Fellowship. For superannuated persons, the Fellowship grant is fixed between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 14,000 a month so as to ensure that after adding pensionary benefits the total amount does not exceed the last pay drawn. For National Fellows the fellowship grant is Rs.22,400/- less pensionary benefits.

Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) was established in the year of 1969 by the Government of India to promote research in social sciences in the country. The Council was meant to:

PhD Student Position in Alpine Hydrogeology at Eawag Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is a Swiss-based but internationally active research institute within the domain of the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Science and Technology). It is committed to the ecologically, economically and socially responsible management of water.

The Department of Water Resources and Drinking Water has a vacancy for a
PhD Student in Alpine Hydrogeology

The subject of the doctoral thesis will be “Water fluxes in alpine catchments with special emphasis on interactions between groundwater and surface water”.

The project will predominantly involve field research, but will be complemented by a modeling component. Using tracer tests and isotopic measurements, the successful candidate will be expected to conduct basic research on upward and downward water fluxes through the unsaturated zone, on lateral preferential flow, and on groundwater / surface water exchange. He/she will be assisted by our field technician to instrument the field site with our direct-push Geoprobe machine.

The goal of the project is to improve our understanding of the mechanisms governing:

alpine groundwater recharge
the storage and flow of groundwater, including mobilization mechanisms of substances during storm events
interactions between surface water and groundwater using the specific isotopic and geochemical signatures of each
groundwater and soil water fluxes, viewed as the lower boundary condition of climatic processes.
The successful candidate for this position will be expected to hold an MSc degree in hydrogeology, geology, hydrology, environmental sciences, or environmental engineering. An advanced knowledge of aquatic physics would be beneficial. Fluency in German and English would be an advantage but is not a requirement.

The anticipated start of this position is 1 October 2010. The initial duration of the position will be three years, with a possible extension of one additional year. The PhD will be awarded by the University of Neuchâtel and supervised by Prof. Mario Schirmer and Prof. Rolf Kipfer. Women are explicitly encouraged to apply for this position with a view to increasing the proportion of women involved in science and research.

[Australia] International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (UNIPRS) ? University of Newcastle

University of Newcastle International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (UNIPRS) are funded by the Research Division. The scholarship is for tuition fees, a Faculty-funded living allowance ($20,007 p.a. in 2008), and the payment of Overseas Students Health Cover.

Duration: three years for a PhD degree and two years for a Master’s degree, less any previous tenure towards a research higher degree at the same level.

Application is open to students from all countries with the exception of Australian and New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents.

Applicants must provide evidence of English proficiency before the closing date. The TOEFL computer based test requires a score of at least 232 (with an Essay Rating of at least 4.5) or a paper based test score of at least 575 (with an Essay Rating of at least 4.5); or an IELTS score of at least 6.5 with no individual subtest score less than 6.0.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

TOEFL score of at least 575 (minimum score of 4.5 in the TWE) – paper based test. Computer based test requires score of at least 232 (minimum score of 4.5 Essay Rating);
IELTS score of at least 6.5 with no individual subtest score less than 6.
Note that applicants are not eligible for:

Support for a research Master degree if they already hold a research Master degree or equivalent;
Support from any RHD scholarship if they already hold a research Doctoral degree or equivalent;
UNRS if they have previously held an equivalent scholarship for six months or more, for the same award.
Scholarship Selection and Offer Procedures
Scholarship applications will be accepted between 1 January and 31 August each year. To apply for a scholarship you must answer the relevant questions on the application form.

Scholarships are awarded to eligible applicants on the basis of academic merit and through a highly competitive process. The award of research scholarships may also take into account areas of research strength or areas of research in line with the strategic directions of the University.

The research scholarship criteria for all faculties will have the common components of academic achievement and research/scholarly attainments (relative to opportunity).

Applicants may elect to be considered in more than one discipline area. A complete separate application must be lodged for each discipline, and each will be considered separately within the relevant faculty. An offer of admission to candidature and/or offer of scholarship in one discipline will not be transferable to another.

Applicants with an incomplete award at the same level who have completed more than two full-time equivalent semesters towards a research Master or more than four full-time equivalent semesters towards a PhD at the commencement of the following academic year will not be considered for the award of a scholarship.

First round scholarship offers will be sent to the applicant’s correspondence address by mid-December. Offers must be accepted within 14 days, therefore it is important that applicants ensure they collect mail from their correspondence address.

Any second-round offers will be made in early February.

Scholarships should normally commence and enrolment should be finalised by 31 August in the year for which the offer of a place was made. Scholarship recipients must normally be enrolled full-time in their research higher degree.
