UK; PhD Scholarship in Art & Design

PhD Scholarship – Cardiff School of Art & Design

A study to evaluate best practice for dwelling sustainability and to develop and test design and construction templates for dwellings to meet level 4 and 5 of the code for sustainable homes for social housing providers in Wales.

By 2011, the Welsh Assembly Government has stated that all new dwellings must be zero carbon (anticipated as level 5 of the code for sustainable homes (CfSH)). Housing association (HA) development funding is currently tied to meeting CfSH level 3, but will quickly increase to levels 4 and then 5.

It is thought that level 3 and beyond demands significantly higher targets for sustainability than previous standards for construction techniques and renewable energy. So the main issues for HAs are how to use best practice from existing projects and to meet the new targets cost effectively.

This project will evaluate the sustainability achievements of existing and also proposed schemes across the UK to assess their effectiveness for carbon and cost reductions and occupant satisfaction; create new dwelling design and specification templates using the existing and new practice knowledge to meet CfSH levels 4 and 5; test the templates through the procurement process and potentially monitor one pilot project for thermal performance and tenant satisfaction.

The aim of the research project will be to test best practice dwelling sustainability and develop and test design and construction templates for CfSH level 4 and 5 for social housing providers in Wales.

The research will utilise a range of analytical techniques, including dynamic thermal modelling to test the validity of level 4 and 5 tempates in the design and specification process, procurement process and construction process and may include post occupancy evaluation.

The successful candidate will ideally come from an architectural technology background (candidates from architecture will also be considered) and possess for example, an MSc in Environmental Architecture, Environmental Design and Engineering, or Architectural Engineering. A suitably experienced graduate may also be considered.

This scholarship is part funded from the ESF (European Social Fund) Convergence Programme (West Wales and the Valleys). To be eligible to apply for this award you must be resident, upon application, in the convergence area of Wales and you must be able to take paid employment in the convergence area on completion of the scholarship.

The Center for Applied Scientific Computing at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to perform advanced research and development in the area of scientific data mining, specifically analysis of streaming data.

Essential duties include:

• Conduct independent research and development in one or more areas of computer science of interest to CASC, such as: signal processing, machine learning; data mining, and statistics.
• Document research and development progress via technical reports, journal publications, and conference presentations.
• Develop software to evaluate novel computational techniques.

[Belgium] Master of Governance and Development at University of Antwerp: VLIR-UOS Scholarship 201

The future of sustainable development is critically related to the promotion of better governance at the local, national, regional and international level. At once a cause and a consequence of governance failures, violent conflict is incompatible with sustainable development. Central in this nexus between development, governance and conflict are processes of state formation, state failure and state reconstruction. Adopting a political economy perspective, the study programme analyses governance problems and possible responses with due account of specific historical pathways of countries and the interaction between the national state level, local society level dynamics and the impact of global developments.

Most of our students are engaged in development, professionally and/or as researchers. The objective of the Master’s programme is to provide them with multidisciplinary theoretical insights and practical tools that will improve their capacity to analyse governance challenges at different levels and how they relate to processes of violent conflict and development. Graduates will understand and be able to analyse, from the local to the global level, the governance problems confronting developing countries today. Theoretical insights, policy strategies and best practices as well as failures are explored in order that graduates could apply this knowledge in their future professional environments.

The Master’s programme in Governance and Development offers two tracks with specific objectives, courses and target audiences. The first track explores governance and development issues against the background of violent conflict and the challenge of post-conflict state reconstruction. The second addresses governance and development challenges from the particular perspective of local institutions and poverty reduction.

Admission requirements

The following candidates are eligible to apply for the Master’s programmes:

• Applicants from the South must hold a university degree (Bachelor or Master) of at least four years of study in Social Sciences (Economics, Political Science, Sociology, International Relations, or related disciplines). Applicants from the South who hold a Bachelor’s degree of only three years of study must demonstrate very strong and relevant professional experience and/or have successfully completed additional training. Applicants from the North must hold a Master’s degree in Social Sciences Only applicants with excellent academic records will be accepted.
• Our ideal participant has at least two years of professional experience in a sector relevant to the programme. Applicants from the North should have relevant field experience in the South.
• Applicants must be proficient in English. Those who have received a university education in English must provide an official certificate confirming this. Other applicants must submit one of the following test results:
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): minimum score of 550 for paper-based test or 79 for Internet-based test. Information about this test is available at www.toefl.org.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): minimum score of 6.0. Information about this test is available at www.ielts.org.
  • Special facilities are offered for students from other language backgrounds (in particular for French-speaking students). Supervisors for the PhD student will be Prof. Eryk Dutkiewicz from Macquarie University, Assis/Prof. Dr. Wei Chen, and Prof. dr. ir. Loe Feijs from Eindhoven University of Technology.

Interested applicants can apply for admission to either Macquarie University or Eindhoven University of Technology as the primary home institution. The two universities will then prepare a joint PhD supervision agreement for the successful applicant, enabling the applicant to enrol and carry out the research simultaneously at both institutions. The applicant will be expected to spend approximately half of the PhD study period at each university. Each university will carry out the PhD thesis examination according to its own examination processes. [Europe] Master Scholarship in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Erasmus Mundus 2010

Four leading research and educational institutions in Europe propose a joint Erasmus Mundus Master Course entitled “Nanoscience and nanotechnology”. The programme offered is a truly integrated program, with a strong research backbone and a very important international outreach.
The objective of this course is to provide top quality multidisciplinary education in nanoscience and nanotechnology.The participating partners are:

• Université Joseph Fourier Grenoble, France
• Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), Germany
• Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven),Belgium

The fast evolution of the field requires a strong consortium with noted educational experience in the field. The partners offer this experience. In addition, all the lectures offered by the consortium are embedded within various research centres (e.g. IMEC in Leuven, European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Grenoble, Max Planck Institute in Dresden, MC2 centre in Chalmers). This strong link between education and research is a guarantee for keeping the education relevant and state of the art.

The master programme has a duration of two years (120 ECTS points). Erasmus Mundus students follow courses at K.U. Leuven and another university of the consortium. Courses are taught in English.

A limited number of scholarships will be granted by the European Commission. There will be category A and B scholarships.

Category A scholarships

Granted to Third country nationals, the term “third-country” does not have anything to do with the term “third world”. Nationals coming from all countries other than the 25 EU Member States (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, Sweden, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia), the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (presently Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Turkey), who are not residents of any of the above countries, and who have not carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries are considered “third-country nationals”.

Category B Scholarships

Can be awarded to any masters students selected by the Consortia and who do not fulfill the Category A criteria defined above. The consortium will submit the list of selected students to the European Commission. The scholarships can only be granted after the official approval of the European Commission. The consortium will communicate with the students on this matter. You will be notified by the end of March whether you are selected for the course or not, this will be an unofficial notification. The official approval of the European Commission will be communicated to you by the beginning of June. Courses start between the end of August and the beginning of November, depending on arrangements made by each university of the consortium.

Description : Sex Determination in Reptiles

We are seeking postgraduate research students to work on various questions to do with sex determination in reptiles and amphibians.

Projects of interest will draw upon a combination one or more of incubation experiments and sex ratio analysis; population genetics; cross-species chromosome painting; sex chromosome gene mapping using our Pogona vitticeps BAC library; subtractive hybridization; gene expression analysis; transcriptomics; next generation sequencing and bioinformatics.

The particular combination of techniques and approaches used will depend upon the questions addressed and the interests and expertise of the candidate.

Our particular interests are in

• seeking evidence of an underlying genetic predisposition for reptiles with TSD to be one sex or the other and determining the consequences of gene-temperature interactions for sex determination in reptiles.
• interactions between the thermal regime within natural nests and sex determination in the context of predicting responses to climate change.
• seeking insight to evolutionary transitions between modes of sex determination (male heterogamety XX/XY, female heterogamety ZZ/ZW, and TSD).
• expression of sex genes under hormonal and temperature induced sex reversal.
• Identification and characterization of universal sex-specific molecular markers in snakes and amphibians.
• Genome organization and evolution in reptiles by generating a gene-dense physical map for Pogona vitticeps.

[Europe] Erasmus Mundus Master Scholarship 2010 in Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering – COSSE

The Erasmus Mundus programme “Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering” (COSSE) is a joint initiative of four European universities:

• KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
• Technical University of Berlin, Germany
• Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands
• Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen- Nürnberg, Germany

The field of computer simulations is of great importance for high-tech industry and scientific/engineering research, e.g. virtual processing, climate studies, fluid dynamics, advanced materials, etc. Often the field is referred to as the third pillar of science complementing theory and experiments.

COSSE is a two-year master’s programme offering a double degree from two universities. The students enter one of the universities and continue the second year at one of the other institutions in another country. COSSE offers education of the highest international standard as well as a unique experience of meeting different European cultures, languages, climate and nature.

Students from any country are welcome to apply. A number of Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available.

There are excellent scholarship opportunities for students accepted to an Erasmus Mundus Master’s programme.

Scholarships

Who can apply for an Erasmus Mundus (EM) Master’s programme scholarship?

Only candidates who have applied to and have been accepted by an EM consortium* in accordance with its specific students’ application and selection criteria, are eligible for a scholarship.

Students can apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship to the programme of their choice but the number of applications must be limited to maximum three programmes.

Please note that students may not begin their studies in the country where they have acquired their most recent degree.

* Consortium = the group of universities offering the programme.

Two types of scholarships

Category A scholarships

can be awarded to masters students selected by the EM consortia who come from a country other than an EU/EEA/EU-applicant country* (for instance all non-European countries) and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries.

The category A scholarship includes:

• Contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs: € 4000 for a one-year EMMCs; € 8000 for courses longer than one year
• Maximum contribution to the EMMC participation costs (including insurance coverage) € 4000 / semester
• Monthly allowance € 1000 / month

* countries other than the 27 EU Member States, the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), Switzerland and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (presently Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia – FYROM and Turkey.

Category B scholarships

can be awarded to any master’s students selected by an EM consortia and
who do not fulfil the Category A criteria defined above.

The category B scholarship includes:

• Contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs: € 3000 – only if the EMMC includes a mobility period to a Third-Country partner
• Maximum contribution to the EMMC participation costs (including insurance coverage) € 2000 / semester
• Monthly allowance € 500 / month

How many scholarships are offered?

Each Erasmus Mundus Master’s programme has:

• 7-10 scholarhips category A
• 6-8 scholarships category B

Scholarship rules and requirements

• Scholarship candidates must have already obtained a first higher education degree or demonstrate a recognised equivalent level of learning according to national legislation and practices.
• Individuals who have already benefited from an EM master’s programme scholarship are not eligible for a second scholarship in order to follow the same or another master’s programme.
• Students benefiting from an EM master’s scholarship cannot benefit from another Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus masters studies.
• EM students scholarships are awarded exclusively for a full-time enrolment in one of the course editions.
• EM master’s students will be awarded on behalf of the consortium a joint, double or multiple degree according to the description for the respective consortium and after fulfilling all academic requirements.

EM master’s students holding an Erasmus Mundus scholarship must:

• Commit themselves to participate in the master’s programme in accordance with the terms defined by the consortium in the Student Agreement. Failure to do so could lead to the cancellation of the scholarship.
• Spend their study period in at least two of the consortium partner countries. These two countries must be different from the country in which the scholarship holder has obtained his/her last university degree; the mandatory mobility periods cannot be replaced by virtual mobility, neither can they take place in institutions outside the consortium.
