Project 1: Comparative and longitudinal analyses of work ethic in European societies This project focuses on work ethic (regarding work as a moral duty). It studies differentials in work ethic among societies, age groups, and time periods. Underlying questions are whether work ethic is declining over time and whether differences in work ethic contribute to the low labor force participation of older persons and of women in some societies. This project uses unique data from the European Values Study, which is a survey project conducted in all 45 European countries in 2008. Similar data collections were done in three earlier years (1981, 1990, 1999), making it possible to study differences among societies and changes over time simultaneously. For more information about the European values Study surveys, see http://www.europeanvaluesstudy.eu/ Project 2: Intergenerational relations and the later life course in Europe This project focuses on the comparative analysis of intergenerational solidarity. More specifically, this project studies support exchanges between generations within families. Support from adult children to elderly parents will be studied, but also support that elderly parents give to children. Support exchange will be studied in the context of the broader life course, meaning that the project considers the link between intergenerational relations and the employment career (e.g., retirement, women’s labor force participation) as well as the link between intergenerational relations and well-being and health trajectories. This project mostly uses data from the Survey of Health and Retirement (SHARE), which is a unique panel survey among 55+ persons in fifteen European countries. For more information about the data, see http://www.share-project.org/
