[South Africa] ERSA Master and Doctoral Scholarships 2010

ERSA is funding post-graduate scholarships for masters or doctoral study in economics in 2009.

Each scholarship will be worth R80 000 per annum, with funding awarded to full time students for:

• 1 year of a one-year coursework masters program (with a mini-dissertation); or
• 2 years for masters by thesis or masters programmes that have two years of coursework and dissertation; or
• up to 3 years for PhD programmes.

In the case of multiple years of funding, funding will be conditional on reports of adequate academic progress being achieved, verified by the host university.

Eligibility for scholarships will be determined as follows:

• ERSA seeks to build long-term excellence in research and policy analysis in the field of economics. Academic excellence in economics is therefore a necessary criterion for eligibility. Applicants must provide a convincing demonstration of the ability to succeed in a credible postgraduate programme in economics.
• A minimum requirement is a pass at 70% in the degree preceding that for which the scholarship application is being submitted.
• Students from designated groups will receive prioritisation.
• Only South African citizens are eligible to apply.
• ERSA will prioritise facilitating the completion of PhD programmes in economics.

Key procedural considerations are as follows:

• Applicants will be subject to a short-listing process. Finalists for the scholarships may be invited for an interview for final selection.
• Scholarships can be utilised at the institution of choice of the scholarship winner. They will not be bound to the institution of origin of the student.
• Funding will only commence with written proof of acceptance to the relevant programme at the institution of choice.
• Students who choose to study outside of South Africa will be required to return to South Africa to work as economists for a period equivalent to that for which they held the scholarship.
• All institutions of higher learning in Southern Africa are encouraged to participate in the scholarship programme, including but not limited to proposing their best students for the scholarships.
• Selection of scholarship holders will be through a panel of economists identified and appointed by the ERSA Academic Board.
• ERSA scholarship holders studying in South Africa will be expected to attend the ERSA workshop programmes in the research group that are relevant to their area of specialisation. For more information on these research groups, see http://www.econrsa.org
• Upon completion of the degree, scholarship holders will be required to submit a paper, based on the dissertation component of their degree to the ERSA Working or Policy Paper series. Publication would be subject to standard quality verification standards.

[Europe] Erasmus Mundus Master Scholarship 2010 in Complex Systems Science

University of Warwick, Ecole Polytechnique (Paris), Chalmers University and University of Gothenburg are pleased to announce a new joint Masters Programme in Complex Systems Science

We are delighted to be able to nominate up to around 17 applicants each year for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship (two years duration).

Formally the details are to be found via the Erasmus Mundus website http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/erasmus_mundus, and in particular the “Programme guide” linked there. However here are the headlines as they apply to our two year course.

For students from Third Countries (category A), the scholarship is intended by EU to enable you to participate in the programme without further funding.

European students (category B) should note that the monthly allowance above is only a contribution towards your living expenses and there is no travel allowance: you will need your own resources in addition.

We are happy to consider students with other sources of funding, for a limited number of places. You will have to pay the “Course Participation Costs” listed above.

Category A means students who are from outside (not a national of nor resident in) Europe in the following sense (category B).

Category B means students who are nationals or residents of:

• EU member states;
• EFTA countries in the EEA;
• “[EU] candidate countries which have a pre-accession strategy, in accordance with the general principles and general terms and conditions laid down in the framework agreements concluded with these countries for their participation in Community programmes”;
• “the countries of the Western Balkans, in accordance with the general principles and general terms and conditions laid down in the framework agreements concluded with these countries for their participation in Community programmes”

We understand Switzerland has not yet satisfied the special criteria for its joining under category B, but is probably ineligible under category A. Any clearer guidance on this welcome!

The University of Tsukuba invites applications from international students for the 2010 University of Tsukuba “Tsukuba Scholarship” as per the guidelines outlined below. The University of Tsukuba’s “English Course
Program”, which will commence in the 2010 academic year, is newly established program through which international students studying at the University of Tsukuba at the undergraduate level can earn their academic
degrees by taking classes only in English.

1. Purpose
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support for exceptional international students who are applying to enter the University of Tsukuba’s English Course Program at the undergraduate level, thereby
contributing to the cultivation of people who can make future contributions to international society.

2. Application Qualifications and Conditions
Applicants for this scholarship must fulfill the following conditions:

Nationality: Applicants whose nationality is of a country other than Japan (limited to those countries with which Japan has diplomatic relations). Applicants who fulfill the qualifications for entering the English Course
Program in any of the following undergraduate schools:

3. Duration of Scholarship
The duration of the scholarship will be from the first month of entering the university until the end of the applicable academic year (August 2010 to March 2011). From April 2011, students may apply for other scholarships from the University of Tsukuba or from other scholarship-granting organizations
or bodies.

4. Scholarship Amount Details
Travel expenses: The scholarship will pay a uniform amount of 100,000 yen for travel expenses to Japan from abroad when entering the University of Tsukuba. However, this travel expense payment is limited to those recipients who will be newly coming to Japan from abroad for the purposes of entering the University of Tsukuba.
Monthly stipend: Scholarship recipients will receive one of the following monthly stipends based on their results in the entrance examination etc.
Class 1:100,000 yen per month
Class 2: 60,000 yen per month
Enrollment fee and first-year tuition exemptions: In addition to the above noted travel expenses and monthly stipend, scholarship recipients will receive exemptions from paying their enrollment fee (a one-time only fee of
282,000 yen) and their first-year tuition (from August 2010 to March 2011, 357,200 yen), for a total of 639,200 yen.

9. Obligations of Scholarship Recipients

undertaken with other students at the University of Tsukuba as well as any other activities.

10. Special Note
The scholarship will be revoked if any of the following situations occur:

If the scholarship recipient has falsified any part of the application documentation.
If the scholarship recipient take a leave of absence, withdraws or is expelled from his/her program of study because of disciplinary measures. If the scholarship recipient has displayed behavior in his/her studies or
lifestyle that is deemed unsuitable.

PhD scholarship in dynamic analysis of multi-purpose platforms for wave and wind energy (IVT-123/09)

Offshore wind represents a significant potential for long-term sustainable energy generation. A cost efficient exploitation of wind energy in deeper waters could benefit from a combined utilization of other technologies. One effective choice is to combine wind energy with tidal current – , or primarily, with wave energy. Assessment of the power capture and reliability and availability of such systems requires analysis of the dynamic behaviour of the whole system under wind and wave forces. The present research project will focus on development and application of methods for integrated analysis of a class of systems which include the structure and mechanical system while the electrical system will be modeled in a simplified manner. The example systems will be selected in cooperation with relevant industry partners.

The research will take place in an international research environment in CeSOS, involving several researchers and PhD candidates in the offshore wind centre Nowitech and the EU network Wavetrain2 and other programmes.

The PhD candidate must have an MSc degree in marine technology, civil- or mechanical engineering or another relevant field. The candidate must be qualified for admittance as a PhD student at NTNU and preferably have good English language skills. The candidate will be a part of a research team residing in Trondheim.

Salaries, etc. PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, grade 45 – 51 on the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 355 400 to NOK 394 200 per year (before tax). PhD students are normally remunerated at wage level 45. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment regulations with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for scholarship appointments in universities and university colleges. The goal of each of the announced positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants are obliged to engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicant’s plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement. A contract of employment will be set up for the engagement period regulating the rights and duties of the PhD student.

A Ph.D. student position is available in the group of Prof. Stefan Gaubatz at the Biocenter, University of Wuerzburg/ Germany. Research in our group is focused on the transcriptional control of the cell cycle and its role in early mammalian development and in tumorigenesis.

Current projects in the lab are focused on the retinoblastoma tumor suppressor family, E2F-transcription factors and epigenetic gene regulation. We employ state-of-the- art technologies including Chromatin-immunopre cipitations (ChIP), RNA interference, cDNA microarrys and cre-lox based mouse models.

POSITION: PhD student position
in a research project sponsored by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) for 3 years. Salary according to the German scheme for state employees, i.e. 50 % of a PhD salary.

The interaction of the serine protease plasmin with endothelial cells as well as in cocultivation with monocytes and macrophages will be analyzed at the cellular and molecular level.

GOALS: i) Identify the receptor for the serine protease plasmin on human endothelial cells, ii) characterize the plasmin-induced signaling pathways in endothelial cells, iii) investigate the functional consequences of the plasmin-mediated cell activation in terms of inflammatory responses.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Isolation and cultivation of primary human endothelial cells and endothelial cell lines as well as primary cells from human blood. Identification of ‚target’ proteins proteolytic signaling by means of biochemical, chemical and physicochemical methods. Analysis of molecule-molecule interactions with ‚surface plasmon resonance’. Characterization of proinflammatory functions, e.g. gene induction, cytokine release and chemotaxis, and proinflammatory signaling, e.g. kinases and transcription factors.

REQUIREMENTS: Diploma or Master degree in Biochemistry, Biology or related areas. We expect a high level of motivation and the ability to work independently as well as in a team. Skills in cell or molecular biology are an advantage, but no precondition.
