France - Station Biologique Postdoc Position in Marine Microbiology

Ecological significance of photoheterotrophic bacteria in the Western Arctic Ocean

We are looking for a foreign applicant for a postdoctoral fellowship at the Station Biologique (Roscoff, France).

We currently witness in the Arctic:
1) a decrease in summer ice cover that exposes sea surface to solar radiation and physical forcings,
2) permafrost thawing and increased river runoff, both leading to an increase in the export to the ocean of organic carbon previously sequestered in the Tundra, and
3) an increase in ultraviolet radiation.

These three phenomena favour a growing mineralization of organic carbon through photo-oxidation and bacterial activity, amplifying the increase in atmospheric CO2. At the same time, the exposure of a larger fraction of ocean surface to sun light and the increase in nutrients brought by rivers lead to larger autotrophic production and sequestration of organic carbon. To predict the balance of these processes, we will conduct an extensive study in the Mackenzie River/Beaufort Sea system in August 2009 onboard the Canadian research icebreaker Amundsen.

Photoheterotrophic bacteria, including proteorhodopsin-containing microorganisms are major components in the Arctic Ocean. Their abundance and hybrid metabolism (respiration and phototrophy) will probably make them key players of the actual changes (increased solar radiation and carbon availability).

USA - University of Houston Post doctoral Position in Materials Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston is seeking to fill a post-doctoral researcher position with specialization in photovoltaics. High-caliber candidates are sought for conducting original research in advanced materials synthesis, characterization, testing, and modeling, particularly of thin film photovoltaics. Specifically, the position is for a lead researcher to manage a program to develop high- efficiency, near-single-crystalline thin film photovoltaics on polycrystalline substrates based on novel technologies and state-of-the-art equipment in the Materials Engineering laboratory of Prof. Venkat Selvamanickam. Details of the Materials Engineering laboratory can be found in http://www2.egr.uh.edu/~vselvama/Templates/Site_Home.htm.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in an Engineering Discipline, Physics or Chemistry with a research specialization in Photovoltaics, and in thin film deposition. Experience in setting up facilities for processing, characterization and testing of photovoltaic materials is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and/or hot wire chemical vapor deposition of silicon, metal organic vapor phase epitaxy of thin III-V materials, liquid phase epitaxy and those who have demonstrated innovative techniques for tailoring materials to achieve key performance metrics. Candidates with relevant work experience beyond their Ph.D. will be considered for a Research Professorship position.

  • Doctoral degree in applied mathematics, discrete optimization, operations research, transportation optimization, parallel computing, or related subjects
  • Solid background in mathematics and parallel computing
  • Good knowledge of exact and metaheuristic methods for transportation optimization
  • Strong publication record
  • Experience with software implementation
  • Good social skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team
  • High ambitions and strong focus on the project goals

Experience with development of parallel and collaborative methods in transportation optimization is an advantage, but not a strict requirement.

France - Ondalys Postdoc Position in Optical Simulations for Novel Probe Design

A French innovative company (Ondalys, http://www.ondalys.fr/en ) is currently developing a novel optical probe for characterizing complex products. This Research and Development study is done in collaboration with a French public research center (Cemagref: http://www.cemagref.fr/English/ ) and Pr. Hamid Dehghani from the University of Birmingham, UK (School of Computer Science: http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/ )

Ondalys is a spin-off company, dedicated to spectroscopic data processing and design of innovative optical solutions http://www.ondalys.fr/en/randd_ondalys.php). Composed of young researchers and engineers, Ondalys stays to the forefront of innovation on these topics, thanks to many cooperation projects with public institutes and industrial customers in France and throughout the EU.

Compared to classical near infrared spectroscopy, the objective of this solution is to correct for scattering effects and evaluate precisely the absorption and scattering coefficients. The data are processed using advanced chemometrics techniques and simulation approaches (Inverse problem solving).

A first probe has been developed and is currently tested for several applications (medical, pharmaceutical, agro-food industries).

Germany - University of Bayreuth PhD Position in Biogeographical Modelling

PhD position availabe:

Modelling habitat use of red deer for improved wildlife management in protected areas

PhD position (University of Bayreuth)

Description
The Biogeographical Modelling group is looking for a highly motivated PhD student to take part in a research project on modelling studies for wildlife management in protected areas, funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt DBU.

Environmental conditions for red deer in the Bavarian Forest National park have changed substantially in recent years, through e.g. large scale bark beetle disturbances or removal of the border fence to the Czeck Republic. Further research needs arise from initiatives of the Bavarian Forest National park to bring its wildlife management closer in line with its philosophy of “let nature be nature”.
