[European] Masters Program in Computational Logic

he European Masters Program in Computational Logic at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is organised as part of its Master of in Science Computer Science offer (Laurea Magistrale). The Master comprises 120 ECTS credits and lasts two years (including thesis). Each year’s course is divided into two semesters. The courses of academic year 2010/2011 will start in October 2010. The continuation of studies towards the PhD doctoral degree is possible.
Prerequisites
The following prerequisites must be fulfilled by students applying for the Masters programme:

  • a three-year Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a comparable university-equivalent qualification (e.g., the Italian three-years Laurea).
Italian and European students with good grades who will finish the Bachelor study by the last application deadline (August) are also encouraged to apply early for this program.
  • language certificate in English. Since the medium of instruction in the Masters Programme is English, students whose first language is not English must demonstrate competence in English. If you are an English native speaker or you had your BSc in a pure English environment, the certificate is not necessary. We recognise many different tests. In the most commonly available, the following minimum scores are suggested:
    • TOEFL: 550 Points (computer based: 213, internet based IBT: 79); we prefer students to simultaneously take the Test of Written English (TWE).
    • IELTS: Level 6.0
  • good knowledge of the foundations of mathematical logic and/or artificial intelligence, for example by having attended a course on logic or artificial intelligence at bachelor level.

Application
If you fulfil the prerequisites, you may apply for the European Master’s Program in Computational Logic using this application form. Please fill in the form and select (if you wish) a second university in the consortium where you would like to study. In addition, you are asked to provide us with THREE complete sets of application documents (one originally certified copy and two duplicates). Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
Your application must contain the following documents:
  • Application form
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Statement of purpose
  • Higher Secondary School Certificate / Intermediate Examination Certificate
  • Reports on university examinations (transcripts) and diploma (first degree or bachelor degree). If the bachelor degree will only be available after the deadline, students are required to send us a PRELIMINARY certificate. This document must be signed and stamped by the home university and give the information when the study will be finished and the final degree issued.
  • English language certificate as stated here
  • For Chinese and Vietnamese students only: The original APS certificate
  • For students already enrolled in one of the local Master’s programs at FUB, UNL, or TUW only: an official statement proving that they are registerd within the local Master’s program
Important: all copies of the original transcripts and degrees must be authenticated as true copies of the originals with a stamp and signature by an authorized institution (e.g., embassy, consulate, public notary). The accuracy of the attached English translation of the documents must be confirmed.
If you have problems with the above documentation, you may contact the FUB EMCL Information Desk for clarifications.
Please mail all required documents to the address below (an online application procedure is in preparation and will open in April 2010):

International Center for Computational Logic
Department of Computer Science

Deadline
Please consider the following deadlines (date of arrival of the complete application):
  • 15 May 2010: deadline for EU- and non-EU-students; applications must be received at that deadline.
  • Students already enrolled at Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Technische Universität Dresden, Technische Universität Wien, or Universidade Nova de Lisboa in a local Master Program on Computational Logic can request to be transferred to the European Master’s Program in Computational Logic before 31 October in their first year. Students must send the application documents (see above) to TUD. They are transferred if they meet the abovementioned eligibility criteria and the joint agrees of the commission.
  • All applications must be sent in paper form (three copies) and in English to the address mentioned above.
  • Please consider the deadlines for applications for scholarships and grants offered by the different institutions.
