UK: PhD Positions on Wave Computations, University of Reading

PhD Positions on Wave Computations, University of Reading, UK

Two fully funded PhD positions for UK/EU students are available as part of an EPSRC funded project about “Next generation finite element methods for wave problems” in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Reading.

The research involves theoretical analysis of novel nonpolynomial finite element methods for wave problems, their implementation on parallel computers and applications to industrial problems. The PhD students will work as part of a team at the Department of Mathematics and will have close contact to
academics in the department and external collaborators. They will also gain industrial experience by working with project partners from industry.

Ideally, the candidates will have an MSc or similar degree in Mathematics or a related subject. They should also have some prior knowledge in Numerical Analysis and programming experience in Matlab, C/C++ or Fortran.

The PhD Studentships are for 3.5 years and include full payment of fees and a tax free living allowance of £13,290 per annum for UK/EU students. Full payment of fees for non EU students might not be possible. Generous funding for travel and support for conferences is also available. The proposed start date is January 2010. However, there may be some flexibility to start slightly earlier or later.
