Overview

The MS Programme is designed to enhance the capacity of developing countries to manage their drylands resources. It is intended to provide young professionals and scientists an international perspective on resource management approaches in drylands. Students enrolled in the 2010-2011 programme will attend a 4-week intense course at CAREERI facilities in Lanzhou, China from 13 September – 12 October 2010. Upon completion of the course work and approval of the research proposal, students will carry out their field research which will be hosted by one of the partner organizations. The students are also required to complete a research project in their home country. The MS Programme is jointly offered by the seven partner institutions as an internationally accepted degree.


It is anticipated that the graduates from the MS Programme will serve in government departments and agencies (e.g., those dealing with agriculture, forestry, natural resource management, and combating desertification), teaching positions in institutions of higher learning, research institutions and doctoral research programmes.

Scholarships



A limited number of Fellowships will be provided to qualified candidates from developing countries on a competitive basis. These fellowships will cover the travel costs between the country of origin and IRA, CAREERI, ICARDA and TU, as needed. Japanese students may only apply for TU fellowships.

Part or full fellowships will be provided to qualified candidates from developing countries on a competitive basis. These fellowships will cover international airfare at economy excursion rates (between the country of origin and the hosting institutions in Tunisia, China, Syria or Japan). Housing, meals, and local transportation in Tunisia, China, Syria or Japan will be provided by the respective host institutions.

The application form must be completed and signed. The following supporting documents must be submitted together with the application form:



A letter of nomination from your supervisor/university where you are currently registered in a Master’s programme that certifies completion of basic course work.

A certified copy of academic transcripts for each institution attended.

An original detailed research proposal of 10 pages clearly outlining the problem statement, literature review, research question, methodology, expected results, workplan and timetable.

Two original supporting letters of reference, one of which must be from your current supervisor.

Evidence of English language proficiency, where English is not your first language (e.g., TOEFL score, English certificate, etc.)

Documents which are not in English must be accompanied by an official English translation.

The Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program is celebrating 50 years! Since the plan’s inception in 1959, the Government of Canada has provided scholarships of excellence to all member countries of the Commonwealth. The CCSP goal is to promote Canadian values and identity around the world and to help meet the human capital needs of developing countries.
Canada also played a leadership role in the establishment of the international Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan and is the largest contributor to this program after the United Kingdom.

Description

• Graduate Students Exchanges (GSEP) are hosted by Canadian institutions for a period of five or six months and provide up to $10,000 to cover transportation, living and other related expenses during the students’ stay in Canada.

Student application process

Students interested in this scholarship program should contact their home institution to make their interest known, and to find out if there is an institutional collaboration or exchange agreement with a Canadian institution. The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) provides a database of international exchange agreements which, while not exhaustive, does provide a list of some existing agreements.
An institutional exchange agreement is desirable, however, where no agreement yet exists, research applications by students which may result in a new collaboration between professors from a Canadian and foreign university will be considered.

Junior Fellowship 2010-11 Ontario Centre for Engineering and Public Policy

From ancient times, engineering has had a profound impact on our lives. During the past few decades in particular, it has been challenged to help us deal with dwindling energy resources, drinking water safety and traffic gridlock. Increasingly, government and business leaders are looking to engineering to help
devise wise, sustainable solutions to these and emerging issues.

Recognizing this need, Professional Engineers Ontario created the Ontario Centre for Engineering and Public Policy in June 2008 to enhance the voice of engineering in the public policy process. It is envisioned that the centre will operate independently, with support expected from an array of organizations interested in nurturing the contributions of engineering to public policy.

The centre focuses on specific areas of research, including energy, the environment, health care, regulation and engineering talent. This focus will expand to further specializations as the centre develops.

The centre has five key areas of activity:
developing policy issue papers;
hosting an annual engineering and public policy conference;
producing an engineering and public policy publication;
building public policy-focused collaborations throughout the engineering profession; and
creating links to university programs covering engineering and public policy.

The centre seeks a postdoctoral scholar working on engineering and public policy issues to fill a junior fellow position in 2010-11 beginning July 1, 2010. The junior fellow will collaborate on all of the centre’s programs as well as conduct an independent research program. Junior fellows are young scholars who have completed all requirements for a PhD, including a successful thesis defense, within the past five years. Priority will be given to Canadians or candidates from Canadian universities.

Compensation is up to $50,000 CAD per year. Applications will include a curriculum vitae, a summary of the pertinence of previous research for the centre’s programs (no longer than 500 words), and a research proposal (no longer than 1,000 words) addressing the role of engineering in public policy
development in Canada and Ontario. Three letters of reference should be submitted directly by referees.

For university or college students of film, film production, or cinematography at the undergraduate or graduate levels in a degree or diploma program. Nominations must be made by the school department or program official.

Visual Imagery will count 50%, creative and other technical skills 25%, and the other criteria 25%.

Entries must be completed works that communicate a story or theme in some fashion — no clips or short vignettes.

[USA] 2010 CAGNY Scholarship

The objective of the scholarship is to further students' interest in the property/casualty actuarial profession and to encourage the pursuit of the Casualty Actuarial Society designations.

Eligibility:

The CAGNY Scholarship Program is available to any U.S. or Canadian citizen or holder of a permanent resident visa who is currently a full-time student at a U.S. or Canadian college or university, and will attend a U.S. or Canadian college or university as a full-time student for the 2010-2011 academic year. An applicant must have demonstrated high scholastic achievement and strong interest in pursuing an actuarial career in the property/casualty insurance industry.

Preference will be given to applicants native to the Greater New York area or attending universities in the Greater New York area.

Procedure:

An application is considered complete when it includes:

1. The 3-page CAGNY Scholarship application.
2. The recommendation form included with this application, preferably completed by an instructor who knows the applicant well.
3. A current official transcript.

Le Canada a créé un « Programme canadien de bourses de la Francophonie » (PCBF) en 1986 afin de faire profiter à 37 pays membres de la Francophonie (admissibles à l’APD) des compétences qui existent dans les institutions canadiennes d’enseignement et de resserrer les liens de tous ordres avec ces pays, favorisant ainsi la promotion des valeurs canadiennes à l’étranger.

Depuis 1987, plus de 1801 bourses ont été octroyées aux ressortissants des pays bénéficiaires de ce programme.

Le PCBF vise à contribuer au développement durable des pays bénéficiaires en accordant la priorité à 1) la formation des formateurs dans le domaine de l’enseignement technique et professionnel, 2) l’amélioration des compétences des collèges et universités dans le domaine de l’enseignement et de la recherche et 3) l’accroissement des compétences et le renforcement des aptitudes par la formation des spécialistes et des gestionnaires dans le secteur public et le secteur privé.

Every year, the MMMF also invites the recipients to Washington DC to participate in a three day Awards Program organized in their honor.

Eligibility:
A woman is eligible to apply for an MMMF grant if she meets all the following criteria:

1. Has a record of service to women and/or children in her country.
2. Resides in the U.S. or Canada at the time she submits the application.
3. Is enrolled at an accredited U.S. or Canadian educational institution for the academic year 2009-10 and remains enrolled during the entire year of the grant.
4. Uses the grant to continue to study for her degree.

DARMASISWA is a scholarship program offered to all foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Bahasa Indonesia, arts, music and crafts. Participants can choose one of 45 different universities located in different cities in Indonesia. This program is organized by the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The DARMASISWA program was started in 1974 as part of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) initiative, admitting only students from ASEAN. However, in 1976 this program was extended to include students from other countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and USA. In early 90’s, this program was extended further to include all countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia. Until to date, the number of countries participating in this program is more than 75 countries.

The main purpose of the DARMASISWA program is to promote and increase the interest in the language and culture of Indonesia among the youth of other countries. It has also been designed to provide stronger cultural links and understanding among participating countries.

Darmasiswa RI Program is conducted in 2 schemes, i.e :

• Regular 1 (One) Year -Darmasiswa RI scholarship Program
  Regular One Year program is a one-year scholarship program offered to foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Indonesian language and Art (traditional music, traditional dance, and Indonesian craft) in selected Indonesian Higher Education Institutions.
• Regular 6 (Six) Months – Darmasiswa RI scholarship Program
  Regular six-month program is a six-month scholarship program offered to foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Indonesian language in selected Indonesian Higher Education Institutions.

The Scholarship Covers
Monthly allowance will be received by participant is Rp 1.500.000,00 (one million and five hundred thousand rupiah), and will be transferred to the University/college where they study.

The participant is advised to bring enough money in US dollar for unexpected additional expenses in Indonesia.

QUALIFICATIONS OF APPLICANTS

Cultural Studies at Queens (CSQ) is a unique graduate program that integrates the range of theoretical and practical approaches used within Cultural Studies, and fosters scholarship in both historical and contemporary fields of research. Drawing on a range of practices, Cultural Studies researchers investigate values, beliefs and belongings, cultural processes and cultural objects, economic and social relations, institutions and identities.
Comprising 69 distinguished faculty from 21 disciplines, CSQ offers an innovative program at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels that includes opportunities for cultural production and community and activist fieldwork. Cultural Studies at Queen’s is committed to a diversity of students and faculty, to the global expertise that they bring to the cultural, social and academic fields, and to student involvement in the shaping of the program. This exciting scholarship opportunity is open to Canadian, Chinese, Indian and US nationals. Awards worth £2000 each are available towards the cost of tuition fees for full time Masters Programmes in a wide range of subject areas. These scholarships are supported and funded by the Scottish Government in partnership with University of Aberdeen.

Eligibility
To be considered for the scholarship you will need to have applied to the University of Aberdeen for a place starting in September 2010 and have firmly accepted an offer, either conditional or unconditional by 11 June 2010.
The scholarship can only be held by a student of the University commencing study in September 2010 – it cannot be transferred to another institution.
Criteria
The scholarship will be awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit.

EDC International Business Scholarships
Job Description : Export Development Canada (EDC) created the International Business Scholarship because International trade is critical to Canada’s economic prosperity and EDC is dedicated to helping students – the next generation of business leaders – to succeed.
EDC is awarding 30 scholarships every year. Twenty-five of these scholarships will recognize exceptional students in the field of international business or economics. The remaining five scholarships will be awarded to outstanding business students with a focus on environment related studies.
An EDC scholarship is worth a $3,000 cash award and, pending eligibility, a potential four-month work term with mentoring from leading industry experts at EDC’s head office in Ottawa, valued at approximately $10,000.
To qualify for one of EDC’s scholarships, you must be:
•a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
•currently enrolled in full-time studies at a Canadian university
•in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of your first undergraduate degree
•studying international business, economics, or combining international business with sustainable management or environmental studies
•returning to full-time undergraduate studies in one of these fields for the next academic year

Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund Educational Grants US/Canada 2010-2011

For students from developing countries who are currently studying in the United States or Canada, the MMMF (Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund) awards grants of approximetly $12,000 each; grants are not renewable. Every year, the MMMF also invite the recipients in Washington DC to participate in a three day Awards Program organized in their honor.

Deadline for submitting completed applications: midnight February 18, 2010
Results: ONLY successful applicants will be notified around May 1, 2010
Eligibility Criteria
A woman is eligible to apply for an MMMF grant if she meets all the following criteria:

1. Has a record of service to women and/or children in her country.
2. Resides in the U.S. or Canada at the time she submits the application.
3. Is enrolled at an accredited U.S. or Canadian educational institution for the academic year 2009-10 and remain enrolled during the entire year of the grant.
4. Uses the grant to continue to study for her degree.
5. Is a national of a lower or middle income country as designated by the Country Eligibility List of the World Bank (Country Eligibility List). Applicant cannot ba a U.S. citizen, permanent U.S. resident or Canadian Land Immigrant.
6. Demonstrates a plan to return to a developing country in about two years after receiving the grant.
7. Demonstrates financial need.
8. Is at least 25 years old by December 31, 2009 (Born before December 31, 1984).
9. Is not related to any World Bank Group staff member or his/her or her spouse.

There are no exceptions to the MMMF Scholarship criteria listed above.

Canada: Postdoctoral Fellowship in Solar Cell Modelling, McMaster University

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Solar Cell Modelling, McMaster University, Canada

Description of the position
The candidate is expected to have existing expertise in inorganic (i.e. Silicon or III-V) semiconductor device design, in particular with photovoltaic and/or photonic devices. The candidate will be designing advanced (ultra-high efficiency) solar cells via modelling of the device structure, fabrication process and anticipated device performance. The ability to customize commercial software packages from a fundamental knowledge will be considered an asset. The candidate is expected to have strong individual expertise and be willing to work in an interdisciplinary team setting, including supervision of graduate and undergraduate students.

Additional details and requirements

• Starting date: on or about January 4, 2010.
• Location: McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
• Candidates must have a degree from a doctoral program in Physics, Electrical Engineering or Engineering Physics (or the equivalent) from an accredited university, with demonstrable research accomplishments.
• The doctoral degree must be completed by the time of the anticipated start date.
• Candidates who are more than 5 years out of their PhD are not eligible.
• Preference will be given to candidates who have not held a previous postdoctoral position.
• Good oral and written communication skills (in English) are required.
• Positions will have the typical structure of an initial 1 year appointment with renewal after review for a 2nd year.

The ASA 2009/2010 Graduate Scholarship – the American Shotcrete Association (ASA) for graduate study

Scholarship Introduction:

The ASA Graduate Scholarships are available to applicants who have been accepted into a graduate program in the field of concrete at the time of application to an accredited college or university within the United States or at Laval University in Canada. To receive consideration for an ASA Graduate Scholarship, the applicant needs only to submit one application. Based on essays, submitted data, and references, the ASA Scholarship Committee will select scholarship recipients who appear to have the strongest combination of interest and potential for professional success in the shotcrete industry.

Eligibility for Scholarship:

• At the time of application, the applicant shall have been accepted for graduate study in the area of concrete at an accredited college or university within the United States or at Laval University in Canada.

• Applicants must be a full-time first or second-year (after bachelor’s degree) graduate student during the entire scholarship year. Course work during a summer session will count toward the degree year. Applications will be accepted from anywhere in the world but graduate study must take place in the United States or at Laval University in Canada during the award year.

• For your application packet to be considered for this award, each of the following pieces of information must be submitted by the deadline indicated on the application form:

*Completed 2009-2010 typed application form (handwritten applications will not be accepted)

*One-page resume (anything over one page will not be accepted)

*Essay (1-page limit, 300 words or less, name must be on first page, please include all scheduled classes for balance of academic year)

*Two (2) completed online reference forms

*All undergraduate and graduate transcripts (all universities attended during all undergraduate and graduate years)

3) they are mailed by the student but are in a sealed envelope with a university stamp over the seal.

4) they are in English or accompanied by a translated English version as well as an explanation of the grading scale if different from the 4.0 scale used in the United States.
