Ph.D. Opportunity in Re-Os Isotope Geochemistry and Stratigraphy of Ordovician Graptolite Zones in Newfoundland.
We seek a highly motivated and creative Ph.D. student for a multi-disciplinary project funded by NSF. Innovation and diligence combined with the ability to assimilate cross-disciplinary literature are essential. The primary goal is the Re-Os dating of graptolites in a detailed biostratigraphic context. The student will be based with the AIRIE Program at Colorado State University, with a competitive stipend for at least two years.
The Re-Os work will dovetail with field studies, sequence stratigraphy, and graptolite taxonomy spearheaded by S. Egenhoff and J. Maletz and a PhD student focused on the stratigraphy.

Norway : Oslo Peace Scholarship

The Graduate Studies in International Affairs (GSIA) program in the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, in partnership with the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) and Bjørknes College, offers one scholarship each year for full-time study in the Master of International Affairs specialising in Peace and Conflict Studies degree program. Tuition fees will be covered by The Australian National University and Bjørknes College; and students will receive some funding towards living costs as a stipend. Norway : two MSc scholarships with 10 months affiliation to the Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM) at UiO.

MIRLU is an interdisciplinary project coordinated by the Centre for Development and the Environment at the University of Oslo in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) at Ås, Arizona State University in the US, Universidad del Valle in Guatemala, and El Colegio de la Frontera Sur in Mexico. We are also in the process of establishing cooperation with the University of Denver in Colorado, US. The aim of this project is to explore the effect of international migration and remittances on land use and land use change in the area of origin of migrants.

Applicants granted a scholarship will write their thesis within the framework of the project. Each scholarship amounts to NOK 30 000. Priority will be given to applicants from Social Anthropology, Human Geography, Development Studies, and Development Economics. In addition to working with their MSc thesis the student is expected to occasionally assist in other project activities. Field work can start in the fall 2010 or spring 2011 semester.

Background  

The MILRU project aims to study how international migration and associated remittances influence the lives of those who migrate, their families and others in the places of origin of migrants, with special focus on land use and land cover change. Almost 1.5 million Guatemalans and 10 million Mexicans live and work in the USA and Canada. Most of them originate from rural areas. This project wants to examine how migrants are shaping perhaps the most valuable resources in rural Guatemala and Mexico, namely land. In addition to economic support to the families, migrants also remit money to collective projects in their communities of origin. Furthermore, the process of migration involves the diffusion of different social practices, ideas, behaviors, and identities. New knowledge, skills and technologies are also brought back by returning migrants.

Some of the relevant questions in this project include: How do migration shape land use and land distribution in rural Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico? How does remittances and the experience of migration change what people produce on their lands? How does such new land use practices influence forest and agriculture? How does migration affect the distribution of on-farm labor? Is the money earned or saved while away used to buy agricultural land or to start other types of business? Do they intensify agriculture on existing plots or expand agriculture into forests? Do returning migrants turn away from food production for own consumption to cultivate cash crops? How does new capital flows impact land ownership and distribution?

DARMASISWA is a scholarship program offered to all foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Bahasa Indonesia, arts, music and crafts. Participants can choose one of 45 different universities located in different cities in Indonesia. This program is organized by the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The DARMASISWA program was started in 1974 as part of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) initiative, admitting only students from ASEAN. However, in 1976 this program was extended to include students from other countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and USA. In early 90’s, this program was extended further to include all countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia. Until to date, the number of countries participating in this program is more than 75 countries.

The main purpose of the DARMASISWA program is to promote and increase the interest in the language and culture of Indonesia among the youth of other countries. It has also been designed to provide stronger cultural links and understanding among participating countries.

Darmasiswa RI Program is conducted in 2 schemes, i.e :

• Regular 1 (One) Year -Darmasiswa RI scholarship Program
  Regular One Year program is a one-year scholarship program offered to foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Indonesian language and Art (traditional music, traditional dance, and Indonesian craft) in selected Indonesian Higher Education Institutions.
• Regular 6 (Six) Months – Darmasiswa RI scholarship Program
  Regular six-month program is a six-month scholarship program offered to foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Indonesian language in selected Indonesian Higher Education Institutions.

The Scholarship Covers
Monthly allowance will be received by participant is Rp 1.500.000,00 (one million and five hundred thousand rupiah), and will be transferred to the University/college where they study.

The participant is advised to bring enough money in US dollar for unexpected additional expenses in Indonesia.

QUALIFICATIONS OF APPLICANTS

Erasmus Mundus 2010 Master Scholarship in Animal Breeding

The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG) offers high quality training, both in terms of scientific knowledge and didactic skills, provided by six excellent university groups within the EU. The EM-ABG is a response to the need for highly qualified graduates in the internationally operating area of animal breeding and genetics.

Universities Involved
University groups on Animal Breeding and Genetics within Europe have a long tradition of collaboration. The consortium consists of:

* Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU), Kiel, Germany

The partner universities together form a consortium with a high level of expertise in every core subject in animal breeding and genetics through which EU can provide leadership for the development of a global training program. Moreover, representatives of seven international organisations have joined the International Advisory Board which advices the Consortium on the development of the course.

Fees and Scholarships

The subscription fees are the same, irrespective of the chosen study track

* EU students: EUR 2,000 per academic year / EUR 4,000 for the whole master course
* Non-EU students: EUR 8,000 per academic year / EUR 16,000 for the whole master course

The subscription fees include the following costs:

* Registration in two universities
* Costs of the orientation period and accommodation of the students during this event
* Allocation of a research grant to every student for direct costs related to thesis research and internship
* Participation in the summer activity at the end of the first year

The subscription fees do not include the living expenses or the travel costs to and within Europe.

Scholarships

The EM-ABG course is supported by the Erasmus Mundus Programme of the European Union:

* Scholarships for third-country (non-EU) selected students are offered. The amount for academic year 2010/2011 is EUR 21,000 per year which should cover the living costs, insurances, travel costs and subscription fees
* Scholarships for third-country (non-EU) selected scholars are offered as well.

For the EM-ABG program starting in August 2010, scholarships for EU students are available:

* The consortium has some scholarships for EU students covering fees.
* Some scholarships covering fees and living expenses are available for EU-students that spend one year at Wageningen University.

PhD scholarship in dynamic analysis of multi-purpose platforms for wave and wind energy (IVT-123/09)

Offshore wind represents a significant potential for long-term sustainable energy generation. A cost efficient exploitation of wind energy in deeper waters could benefit from a combined utilization of other technologies. One effective choice is to combine wind energy with tidal current – , or primarily, with wave energy. Assessment of the power capture and reliability and availability of such systems requires analysis of the dynamic behaviour of the whole system under wind and wave forces. The present research project will focus on development and application of methods for integrated analysis of a class of systems which include the structure and mechanical system while the electrical system will be modeled in a simplified manner. The example systems will be selected in cooperation with relevant industry partners.

The research will take place in an international research environment in CeSOS, involving several researchers and PhD candidates in the offshore wind centre Nowitech and the EU network Wavetrain2 and other programmes.

The PhD candidate must have an MSc degree in marine technology, civil- or mechanical engineering or another relevant field. The candidate must be qualified for admittance as a PhD student at NTNU and preferably have good English language skills. The candidate will be a part of a research team residing in Trondheim.

Salaries, etc. PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, grade 45 – 51 on the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 355 400 to NOK 394 200 per year (before tax). PhD students are normally remunerated at wage level 45. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment regulations with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for scholarship appointments in universities and university colleges. The goal of each of the announced positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants are obliged to engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicant’s plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement. A contract of employment will be set up for the engagement period regulating the rights and duties of the PhD student.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

The fellowship is awarded for 4 years with 25 % duties for the Department.

The Quota Scheme also offers funding for Ph.D.-programmes and a one-year course in advanced Norwegian Language. Quota Scheme applicants should come from universities/institutions with formal cooperation agreements with the University of Oslo.

Who May Apply?

Applicants for admission under the Quota Scheme must fulfill certain criteria in order to be considered for admission. Admission is limited and therefore extremely competitive.

Nationality

Only applicants from countries included in the list of countries eligible for Quota Scheme funding will be considered. Please note that applicants who live in another country than their country of citizenship, either temporary or permanently, cannot apply. It is a condition that the applicant applies for admission to the quota scheme from his or her home country, and can substantiate that he or she has been in the home country for at least one year prior to admission into the programme. Applicants from an eligible country, who are residing in another country on the list, may in some cases be considered. Quota Scheme students are expected to return home on completion of their studies in Norway.

Institutional Cooperation

Applicants should come from institutions with which the University of Oslo has a cooperation agreement. Potential applicants should check with their home institution to determine whether they have a cooperation agreement with the University of Oslo.

Funding

The Quota Scheme is a scholarship programme, but the funding is given as part loan/part grant. Students receive money from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. After completing the programme and providing documentary evidence of return to his/her home country, the student's outstanding loan is converted to scholarship. If residence is taken in Norway within ten years after termination of studies, the scholarship is converted back to a loan and must be repaid.

Criteria for application

Required Educational Background

The Quota Scheme is aimed at postgraduate students. Applicants must fulfil the basic entrance requirements for matriculation at a Norwegian institution of higher education. In addition to the basic entrance requirements, applicants for the Quota Scheme must provide documentary evidence of the following:

* For Master's Degree programmes, the minimum requirement is three (3) years of study at university level, i.e. minimum Bachelor's Degree level (or equivalent).
* For doctoral programmes, applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years of university-level studies in their chosen subject. For further information, click here.
* For the one-year advanced Norwegian language programme, the minimum requirement is two (2) years of study at university level; however, applicants with a completed first degree will be given priority.

Grade requirement

Admission to these programmes is very competitive, and only applicants with excellent grades will be considered (minimum B+/ Upper second/GPA 3.0).

Proficiency in English

Documentation of English language skills is required for admission to any of the programmes offered under the Quota Scheme.

* TOEFL minimum score 550 (paper-based) / 213 (computer-based) / 80 (iBT)
* IELTS minimum band 6.0 academic test.
