The Vienna PhD School of Informatics is an international PhD School, funded by the Vienna University of Technology (TU Vienna), the City of Vienna and private sponsors. PhD students for this full-time programme are recruited world-wide, all courses are held in English.

The PhD-School’s curriculum covers the main research areas of the Faculty of Informatics. In addition, it may also imply cooperation with other TU Vienna faculties. [European] Masters Program in Computational Logic

he European Masters Program in Computational Logic at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is organised as part of its Master of in Science Computer Science offer (Laurea Magistrale). The Master comprises 120 ECTS credits and lasts two years (including thesis). Each year’s course is divided into two semesters. The courses of academic year 2010/2011 will start in October 2010. The continuation of studies towards the PhD doctoral degree is possible.
Prerequisites
The following prerequisites must be fulfilled by students applying for the Masters programme:

• a three-year Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a comparable university-equivalent qualification (e.g., the Italian three-years Laurea).
  Italian and European students with good grades who will finish the Bachelor study by the last application deadline (August) are also encouraged to apply early for this program.
• language certificate in English. Since the medium of instruction in the Masters Programme is English, students whose first language is not English must demonstrate competence in English. If you are an English native speaker or you had your BSc in a pure English environment, the certificate is not necessary. We recognise many different tests. In the most commonly available, the following minimum scores are suggested:
  • TOEFL: 550 Points (computer based: 213, internet based IBT: 79); we prefer students to simultaneously take the Test of Written English (TWE).
  • IELTS: Level 6.0
• good knowledge of the foundations of mathematical logic and/or artificial intelligence, for example by having attended a course on logic or artificial intelligence at bachelor level.

Field of work
The ReLoClim Research Group (www.wegcenter.at/reloclim) of the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change develops climate scenarios and investigates the regional impacts of climate change in the framework of national and international projects. We are searching for a new member (PhD student) of our highly motivated young research team. The successful applicant will work in the framework of the project CC-Snow (Effects of Climate Change on Future Snow Conditions in Tyrol and Styria, ACRP) and will be responsible for integration of climate scenarios into high resolution snow models. This includes the development and advancement of empirical-statistical climate downscaling algorithms as well as the design of online coupling strategies for climate and snow models.
Job Profile
Duration: a 2-years contract with option for extension; PhD position – according to the university collective bargaining agreement, part-time (30 hours/week), job can be filled as soon as possible .

The START-Project “Interfaces and Free Boundaries” (directed by M. Hintermueller) hosted at the Karl Franzens University of Graz (Austria) invites applications for a POST-DOC Position in Applied Mathematics.

We are looking for a young scientist holding a PhD in Applied Mathematics or Scientific Computing with specialization in at least one of the following fields: large scale or PDE-constrained optimization, variational inequalities, shape or topology optimization, mathematical image processing.

The START-project is based on a scientific award by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research and is administered by the Austrian Science Fund FWF. Besides applied mathematics, the START-Project also has a strong component in computational science focusing on the numerical realization of algorithms in various applications. Ph.D. student and postdoc positions

We are looking for a Ph.D. student and a postdoc for the FWF Project Cross-diffusion in chemotaxis and tumor growth models, financed for three years. The Ph.D. candidate should have a diploma or master in Mathematics with a good knowledge in the analysis and/or numerical approximation of partial differential equations. The postdoc should have a qualified Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and a good research record. Both candidates are expected to be interested in mathematical questions concerning mathematical biology. Erasmus Mundus 2010 Master Scholarship in Animal Breeding

The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG) offers high quality training, both in terms of scientific knowledge and didactic skills, provided by six excellent university groups within the EU. The EM-ABG is a response to the need for highly qualified graduates in the internationally operating area of animal breeding and genetics.

Universities Involved
University groups on Animal Breeding and Genetics within Europe have a long tradition of collaboration. The consortium consists of:

* Wageningen University (WU) (the Netherlands) as co-ordinator
* University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria
* Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU), Kiel, Germany

* Agro ParisTech, France
* Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden
* The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB), Aas, Norway.

The partner universities together form a consortium with a high level of expertise in every core subject in animal breeding and genetics through which EU can provide leadership for the development of a global training program. Moreover, representatives of seven international organisations have joined the International Advisory Board which advices the Consortium on the development of the course.

Fees and Scholarships

The subscription fees are the same, irrespective of the chosen study track

* EU students: EUR 2,000 per academic year / EUR 4,000 for the whole master course
* Non-EU students: EUR 8,000 per academic year / EUR 16,000 for the whole master course

The subscription fees include the following costs:

* Registration in two universities
* Costs of the orientation period and accommodation of the students during this event
* Allocation of a research grant to every student for direct costs related to thesis research and internship
* Participation in the summer activity at the end of the first year

The subscription fees do not include the living expenses or the travel costs to and within Europe.

Scholarships

The EM-ABG course is supported by the Erasmus Mundus Programme of the European Union:

* Scholarships for third-country (non-EU) selected students are offered. The amount for academic year 2010/2011 is EUR 21,000 per year which should cover the living costs, insurances, travel costs and subscription fees
* Scholarships for third-country (non-EU) selected scholars are offered as well.
* The scholarship application is included in the application form (application deadline 15th of January 2010).

For the EM-ABG program starting in August 2010, scholarships for EU students are available:

* The consortium has some scholarships for EU students covering fees.
* Some scholarships covering fees and living expenses are available for EU-students that spend one year at Wageningen University.
* European students can make use of existing Erasmus-Socrates exchange programmes.

At the Faculty for Social Sciences in co-operation with the Faculties of Law, of Philosophy and Educational Sciences, of Cultural Studies and of Philosophical and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna an interdisciplinary PhD-Program with 12 PhD-positions "Gender, Violence and Agency in the Era of Globalization" (GiK) will be established. The program will start on March 1st, 2010. The GiK offers a research intensive three year PhD-Program on a full time basis. Remuneration will amount to 1.199,10 Euro per month gross.

The interdisciplinary PhD-Program focuses on violent conflicts at territorial and social borders, on diverse forms of cultural and religious fundamentalism, on shifting responsibilities and power relations in nation-states as well as on new processes of the commodification of human bodies. Moreover, local and translocal strategies of alliances and national as well as transnational scales of belonging, empowerment and self-organization will be of major interest. The program will encourage
research projects in four research areas:

1) constructing and deconstructing gendered geopolitical and social borders,
i.e. trafficking, citizenship of migrants, domestic violence;
2) cultural diversity and fundamentalist responses, i.e. "cultural violence",
empowerment of migrant women;
3) transforming state power and violence, i.e. new wars, governmentalization
of state power, transnational women's networks;
4) bodies in conflict, i.e. cosmetic surgery, reproductive medicine.

Violence and agency in globalization processes include economic, political, social, legal, epistemological and cultural dimensions and call for historical as well as for normative perspectives. One of the major aspects is studying the intersection of multiple differences and the structure of
inequality, e. g. gender, class, ethnicity and sexuality.

Students from all countries of origin who hold a university degree equivalent to an international MA or Austrian "Magister" in Law, History, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, German Philology, Cultural Anthropology

Good knowledge of English and German is expected. In cases of limited knowledge of German, support will be offered within the framework of further education at the University of Vienna.

Applicants should have knowledge of gender theories and methodology. The dissertation topic must be directly related to one of the GiK's research areas.

Proposal and abstract of the dissertation (20.000 characters, incl. abstract, excl. References);

Sample of text of scientific work (i.e. Master thesis);

Motivation letter for participation in the GiK, incl. experience in Gender Studies (4.000 characters);

CV incl. qualifications and publications;

2 academic references.

Accepted phD-students will receive a monthly scholarship and are free from tuition. They have the right to teach courses at University of Vienna. They have to inscribe as PhD-students at the University of Vienna.

The call is now open. Deadline for receiving applications: October, 31st, 2009. Interviews will be held during November 2009.
