Job Description
A PhD-candidate in land remote sensing `Applying terrestrial LIDAR to measure vegetation characteristics and improve remote sensing monitoring applications` The Centre for Geo-Information atWageningen University (NL) is offering a PhD position for combining terrestrial LIDAR measurements and new remote sensing algorithms for monitoring of vegetation structure and biophysical variables; with focus on forest areas. The PhD student is expected to perform research on the analysis of hemispherical, multiple-return terrestrial LIDAR measurements and integrate such data with improved and innovative land remote sensing approaches for calibration and validation purposes. The methodological work will entail field campaigns (also international), the analysis of three-dimensional LIDAR signals to derive vegetation parameters, and the application of quantitative digital image analysis techniques. The research is part of international research collaborations.

Requirements:
MSc degree and experiences in relevant fields such as Remote Sensing, Forestry, Ecology,Environmental Science, or Geography. Knowledge in the areas of expected methodological work and programming skills in IDL or MATLAB is preferable. The candidate should have an interest to work in a research team including international partners.

Netherlands : PhD Position development of a micro reactor

A PhD position is available in the group "Elementary Processes in Gas Discharges", Department of Applied Physics, TU Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The successful candidate shall be involved in the development of a micro reactor for the epoxidation of propene using a micro plasma. This plasma will be a pulsed dielectric barrier type discharge, which allows for high conversion efficiencies at very low electrical power. The aim is to develop an integrated system where the hydrogen peroxide is produced from hydrogen and oxygen gas in a pulsed microplasma in a dedicated microreactor. This hydrogen peroxide is then immediately used in a second step in a second microreactor for the epoxidation of propene. Besides optical spectroscopy to analyze the plasma an existing numerical simulation model will be used to optimize the process parameters.




A close collaboration with researchers from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the TU/e will aim at using this integrated concept for a clean, safe, simple, and efficient production of propene oxide that can be scaled to industrial capacities.



Ideally the candidate should have a degree in physics or a related discipline, a profound background in experimental (plasma) physics and/or optical spectroscopy is preferred.



This position offers full-time employment for 4 years, with an initial evaluation period. PhD Position in Southeast Asian Pop Music, Leiden University, Netherlands

Within the NWO funded project ‘Articulating Modernity: the Making of Popular Music in 20th Century Southeast Asia and the Rise of New Audiences’.

This is a joint project with the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) and the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD). The project analyzes the interplay between the production of popular music, the articulation of modernity, and the emergence of new audiences, lifestyles and related processes of social differentiation in 20th century (pen)insular Southeast Asia. We focus on decisive historical junctures where technological innovation, human agency, the consumption of new musical styles and the rise of new audiences came together within particular Southeast Asian urban localities. Two senior researchers have been appointed within the project to study the jazz age (1920-1950s) and Islamic popular music in the digital era (1990s-2000s). There is one PhD position available.

The PhD project advertised covers the period from the 1950s to 1970s. The regional focus is onIndonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand or the Philippines. We ask candidates to focus on pioneering artists and producers and to explain their emergence within their particular urban context, the kind of audiences the artists addressed, the new genres they created and how their music was disseminated through live performances, vinyl records, audio cassettes and radio broadcasts.

Candidates are expected to have:
A MA , MPhil or MSc degree in the Social Sciences or Humanities with excellent results;
A good command of English (IELTS certificate of qualification 7,5) and proficiency in a Southeast Asian language;
Outstanding research qualities manifest in a high-quality MA thesis or equivalent;

fMRI is a fast developing technique that permits addressing core questions in cognitive neuroscience in the human brain. The future of this technique resides in pushing hardware to permit ultra-high field scanning at superior spatial resolution, developing advanced data analysis, and combining the technique with other approaches, including EEG, TMS, PET, as well as pharmacology and molecular biology. These goals are pursued by a consortium of 4 partners consisting of Maastricht University (Brain Imaging Centre), Research Centre Juelich (MR Physics), University of Liege (Cyclotron Research Centre) and Glaxo-Smith- Kline (Clinical Imaging Centre London). Funding comes from a Marie-Curie Initial Training Network grant.

To advance research goals at the consortium, we are looking for applicants who (1) show a drive to investigate a core question in cognitive neuroscience which can be theoretical (e.g., perception, attention, memory) or more clinical in nature (e.g., dementia, neurofeedback in locked-in patients); (2) are motivated to use and/or help engineer cutting-edge methods of data acquisition (physics) and data analysis; (3) enjoy the (technical) challenges of working in an integrative, multidisciplinary environment. Title of project 1 
“Welfare state legitimacy: cross-national analyses from a multi-dimensional perspective”(Vacancy number 400.10.13). The social legitimacy of the welfare state is mostly measured by the degree to which citizens support government responsibility in regulating and/or providing social benefits and services. However, people will also have opinions and preferences regarding underlying principles of redistributive justice, implementation practices, and outcomes of welfare, which may add to their overall evaluation of the welfare state. This project aims to study welfare legitimacy from a multi-dimensional perspective.

Title of project 2 
“Individual and social effects of income inequality” (Vacancy number 400.10.14) The negative relation between income inequality in countries and the general health status of their citizens is well-studied. The aim of this cross-national project is to look into other possible social and individual consequences of income inequality, using models that are capable of distinguishing between micro and macro explanations, and the possible interrelations between the two.

JOB DESCRIPTION 
The main task of the candidates is to carry out theoretical and empirical analyses of the individual level and context level determinants of (project 1) welfare state legitimacy as a multi-dimensional phenomenon, or (project 2) the individual and social effects of income inequality in countries. In addition to their research, candidates will follow taught courses to develop their theoretical and methodological skills, and they will participate as teaching assistants in the sociology courses of the department.

REQUIREMENTS 
We look for graduated students who: - have completed a master programme in sociology, social policy, or political science, with very good results - have (EU comparative) knowledge of social inequalities and social policies - have knowledge of techniques for the analysis of large-scale survey data, especially also of multi-level analyses - are ambitious and can work independently, and have good analytical skills.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Job description: Vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) has recently been added to the Dutch National Immunization Programme. HPV vaccination aims to reduce cervical cancer, but until now vaccine efficacy has only been demonstrated against short-term intermediate endpoints (persistent infection, precancerous lesions). Therefore, monitoring the epidemiology of HPV infection is crucial to assess the
long-term effectiveness of the HPV vaccination programme in reducing the incidence of cervical cancer.The candidate will develop mathematical models that can reproduce the observed patterns of HPV infection and HPV-related disease. The models are vital for
interpreting observed changes in the epidemiology of HPV after introduction of vaccination. The models should also identify informative surrogate endpoints by which the population impact of HPV vaccination can be monitored in the short term. The project will result in the writing of scientific publications and a dissertation.

Expeditionary Construction Management: A research on construction management processes in stabilization and reconstruction operations.

Scope of the Ph.D. project:
In several (post-) conflict situations, military involvement in (re)construction of local roads, schools and hospitals is necessary to create stability. The scarcity of military engineers and the necessity to be involved in such non-military activities – as a part of a wider comprehensive conflict approach – forces the military organization to outsource these activities. Outsourcing construction projects to – in particular – local contractors increases local capacity-building and local ownership. Despite these advantages, the military organization also faces many difficulties regarding tendering, controlling, monitoring and evaluating construction projects which are performed by local parties. In order to overcome these difficulties, the objective of this research project is to develop a new construction management process model which suits the specific needs of construction management in stabilization and reconstruction operations. The PhD will spend about 20% of his time on teaching courses to NDLA-students.

Profile:
The candidate is expected to have a Master degree in construction management, civil engineering,business administration, economics or a comparable subject. Excellent analytical skills are a must. Furthermore, the candidate should be able to work in a multidisciplinary and dynamic work environment and be able to read and understand Dutch and to write and speak English.

Research Project Description
Needle insertion is one of the most common minimally invasive clinical procedures. It is used for diagnosis, localized drug delivery, and tissue sample removal from tumours deep within the body. These procedures are often performed under the guidance of magnetic resonance (MR) images. For effective medical diagnoses and treatments, the needle must reach its intended target. However, tissue inhomogeneity, organ deformation, and physiological processes cause the needle to deviate from its intended path. In order to increase the targeting accuracy of needles and improve clinical outcomes, the goal of this research project is to develop:
An MR-compatible robotic device (PhD: Mechanical Design – Position 1)
Patient-specific biomechanical tool-tissue interaction models (PhD: Biomechanical Modeling – Position 2)
Techniques to track and control needle path using MR images (PhD: Image Processing, State Estimation and Control – Position 3)

Service-orientation aims at composing complex systems from simpler systems, called services. One fundamental problem is to decide when a service can be substituted by another service. In this project, we approach this problem by combining theoretical research and applicability in industrial settings. To this end, we investigate a theoretical foundation of service substitution at the level of service models. Among others, we develop algorithms to decide service substitution and to construct substitutable services. We implement and integrate the theoretical results into service technology tools available at http://service-technology.org/tools and embed it in other tools such as ProM and BPM/SOA platforms.



The project will be conducted in the AIS group under the supervision of prof.dr. Wil van der Aalst and dr. Christian Stahl. The AIS group is part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The department provides undergraduate and MSc programs in Industrial and Applied Mathematics and in Computer Science. The Department has research collaborations with other Departments at the Technische

Universiteit Eindhoven as well as with a large number of other universities and companies, both at home and abroad. The Department has approximately 350 employees and more than 700 students.



The AIS group is doing research in the area of process modeling and analysis. Asthma is a common disease, with an average prevalence in European countries of around 10-15% among children. In most cases, asthma is associated with an allergic response towards inhaled aeroallergens such as house dust mite or pollen that causes inflammation and remodeling of the airways. Remodeling of the airways is most prominent in severe asthmatics and is characterized by increased and altered extracellular matrix deposition in the subepithelial airway compartment, marked thickening of the bronchial smooth muscle, mucus gland hypertrophy and hyperplasia, and bronchial microvascular remodeling. There is accumulating evidence that asthmatic airway remodeling already occurs in early childhood, often precedes the onset of symptoms and determines the deficit in lung function in later life. Here, we propose that the Wnt signaling pathway, central in lung development, plays an important role in the development of airway remodeling, and provides novel opportunities for treatment.

Project aim
In this project we aim to determine the role of Wnt signaling pathways in the initiation of cell responses associated with airway remodeling in asthma. We will use cell cultures of airway fibroblasts and airway smooth muscle cells to establish the role of individual Wnt ligands and frizzled receptors in functional responses including cell proliferation, matrix protein production and cytokine secretion. Also, we will study interactions with disease triggers and dissect the intracellular signaling mechanisms involved.
We are looking for
MSc in (Cell) Biology, Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Pharmacy or equivalent. The candidate should have expertise with molecular and cellular techniques, ability to work autonomously and to collaborate, good communication and organization skills and good English speaking and writing capacities.
The project has to result in a PhD thesis within 4 years. Start of the PhD studentship is as soon as possible.
