UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi (Japan) Co-Sponsored Research Fellowships and Scholarships Programme: 2010 Cycle – With a view to keeping alive and honouring the spirit of former Prime Minister Obuchi and his belief in 'people building the next era', 20 fellowships and scholarships per year, for the ninth year, will be awarded to deserving candidates from UNESCO developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research based on scholarships' aid on one or more of the topics listed below.

The aim of the fellowships and scholarships' aid is to support innovative and imaginative post-graduate research in the areas of development to which former Prime Minister Obuchi was committed and which coincide with areas of particular interest to UNESCO.

The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships and scholarships' Programme funded under a Japan Funds-in-Trust project will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity-building and research activities in the following areas which were of particular importance to Mr Keizo Obuchi: 1. Environment (with particular attention to Water Sciences); 2. Intercultural Dialogue; 3. Information and Communication Technologies; and 4. Peaceful conflict resolution. No other research topics will be considered.

Eligibility

Applicants for these scholarships, a maximum of two from each applying National Commission, must meet the following general criteria:

1.       Candidates under this Scholarships' Programme must be post-graduate researchers, already holding either an M.A. or M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) and wishing to pursue research work abroad (preferably in their own region) with a view to enhancing knowledge in one of the four specific fields mentioned in paragraph D.1 below. Thus, those who are in the process of completing their Master’s degree must have completed it PRIOR to taking up their Fellowship.

2.      Scholarships' Candidates must be persons of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make significant contributions to their country on return.

3.      Candidates must be no more than 40 years of age. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1970 will not be considered under the Programme.

4.      The selected Fellow must carry out the research under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution. Confirmation of acceptance from the academic supervisor is imperative.

5.      Priority attention will be given to:

o        Women

o        Candidates from least developed countries (LDCs)

o        Palestinian researchers

6.      Candidates of scholarships' recipients must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study/research.

7.      Applicants must be in good health, both physically and mentally.

The Department of Communications of Adelphi University, in cooperation with the Office of Admissions, offers several Talent Scholarships each year to outstanding entering freshmen or transfers who show evidence of unusual ability and accomplishment in the media arts.

How to apply:

Scholarship Introduction:
The Defense Commissary Agency and Fisher House Foundation, Inc. are offering college scholarships to eligible children of military families through the Scholarships for Military Children Program.

The program was created to recognize the way military families contribute to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of commissaries in the military community. The scholarship program is administered by Scholarship Management, a non-profit scholarship service organization, and is independent of DeCA and Fisher House.

Eligibility for scholarship:
Eligibility will be determined by the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System database, and applicants for scholarships should ensure they and their sponsors are enrolled in DEERS and have current identification cards. Those applying can verify DEERS enrollment by logging on to its Web site at www.dmdc.osd.mil.
Unmarried children under the age of 23 are eligible, but they must be children of active-duty personnel, Reserve or National Guard members; survivors of service members who died while on active duty; or survivors of individuals who died while receiving retired pay from the military.

Scholarship Details:

A PhD project is being offered in the Department of Modern History, Politics, International Relations and Security as part of the Gallipoli Centenary Research Project. The aim of the Gallipoli Centenary Project is to make a comprehensive study of the Ottoman Turkish operations during the Gallipoli Campaign and assess how this impacted on the outcomes of the campaign. The project has been accumulating documents from Turkish archival sources and translating them into English as a data base since 2007.  The PhD candidate will be expected to substantially utilise this documentary database in the preparation of the thesis. Knowledge of Ottoman Turkish an advantage but not essential. An abstract outline of your proposal for a PhD thesis should accompany your application.

The Fullbright Commission offers The Criminal Justice and Police Research Fellowships to US Citizens for the 2010/11 session in UK

Each year, approximately two awards are offered to active US police officers and civilian staff to conduct research, develop professional expertise and gain experience in the UK for periods of three and five months. In exchange for serving as host, fellows can be a resource for UK institutions by offering to speak to students and faculty about policy and practice in the US. Candidates will be selected by the Fulbright Commission and the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) to receive a grant to be used towards related travel and maintenance costs.

Award Details:

The award is for $3,000 per month (not to exceed a total of $15,000) paid in installments directly to the grantee, the first of which is typically given just prior to arrival in the UK. Limited sickness and accident benefit coverage as well as participation in a number of Fulbright Scholar events including the Fulbright Forum in January are also included. Applicants must have full or partial financial support from their home departments.

Minimum eligibility for this award category:

1. US citizen (resident anywhere but the UK)
2. Currently employed by a police force (holding a position of responsibility at the level of sworn sergeant or above)

TASS 2012 Scholarships-Talented Athletes-UK

Applications are invited from talented athletes for the year 2012 TASS Scholarships in UK

The TASS 2012 scholarship programme is designed for talented athletes that have the potential to be a future medalist at the winter and summer Olympics. The scheme aims to fast track athletes onto World Class programmes. TASS 2012 runs alongside the main TASS programme.

Eligibility:

1. Have a British passport.
2. Be undertaking a recognised education programme registered at an Institution in England. (A TASS 2012 athlete needs only to be undertaking an education programme at a recognised education institution).
3. Be able to represent either the Great Britain or English representative team in their chosen sport.
4. Current world-class funded athletes – Podium, Development, and Talent cannot receive additional funding from TASS.

Awards:

There are two types of TASS awards. There is one TASS award available to all athletes. Please see awards section for more information.

TASS make two types of awards:

1. Scholarships – Scholarships are awards to the value of £3,500 per annum.
2. 2012 Scholarships – 2012 Scholarships are awarded to the value of £10,000 per annum. Athletes identified by their NGB who have already demonstrated exceptional sporting talent are eligible for TASS 2012. The aim is to fast track these gifted youngsters into World Class Pathways.

Selection process:

Athletes that are eligible for a TASS 2012 scholarship will be competing at a high level and already known by their NGB. The NGB is therefore best placed to select the appropriate athletes. The selection process consists of three stages.

1. NGB nominates athletes by submitting a 2012 Athlete Registration form. This provides the TASS management with enough information to decide if an athlete is eligible for TASS 2012.
2. If an application passes stage one, NGB’s then have to complete a 2012 athlete subjective criteria form. This provides NGB’s with the opportunity to outline why an athlete should receive the award and detail how the award should be used and how it will help the athlete to achieve their goals.
3. The TASS management then assess each application considering current performance, existing support, and NGB support and infrastructure. This procedure is carried out in association with UK sport.

Creative Writing Distinguished Scholar Award 2010/11-US Citizens-Queen’s University Belfast-UK

Each year, one award is offered to a US citizen for teaching, writing and public readings of their own work at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). The appointment will be for a period of 6 months beginning in the Autumn or Winter/Spring term. The Distinguished Scholar would be expected to assist in the teaching of one undergraduate module in creative writing, as well as conduct one postgraduate workshop in the field of the lecturer’s expertise and interest in creative writing, and to offer public readings of published work and work in progress at and through events sponsored by the Seamus Heaney Centre and the School of English. Candidates will be selected by the Fulbright Commission and the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) to receive a grant to be used towards related travel and maintenance costs.

Amount of the Award:

The award is for £15,000 (regardless of project length) paid in installments directly to the grantee, the first of which is typically given upon arrival in the UK.
