Scholarship Description

A scholarship is available for a full-time Masters candidate who is undertaking research in a topic pertaining to Chinese Film and Media Studies, with a focus drawn from the ARC-funded project topic of ‘posters of the cultural revolution: contemporary Chinese perspectives on an era of propaganda’. The stipend will be awarded on a competitive basis to a student who has demonstrated excellent critical aptitude in a relevant field of study, has tertiary training in Chinese Studies, and who has Honours 1 in relevant field of study (Honours 2 applicants considered if accompanied by excellent referee’s reports). The Aust Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) has a multidisciplinary focus with leading-edge researchers working at the interface of the biological, chemical and physical sciences. The Institute’s research focuses on improving human health and quality of life. The Sch of Pharmacy at The University of Queensland has a supportive postgraduate student environment including a scheme to encourage research presentations at international conferences in the final year of candidature. The project will focus on the design, fabrication and characterisation of microfluidic devices for the preparation of drug delivery vectors. The candidate will also be involved in assessing the efficacy of the derived vectors in vitro and in vivo in various tumour models. The NSW Government has developed a postgraduate scholarship in honour of the late Professor Peter Cullen AO FTSE. Professor Cullen contributed significantly to water resource management in Australia, and NSW. The program is jointly funded by various New South Wales Government Water Agencies, including the Department of Water and Energy, Sydney Catchment Authority, State Water, Hunter Water Corporation and Sydney Water Corporation. The aim of the scholarship is to: • Improve our understanding of how rivers, groundwater, wetlands and estuaries function and respond to enhanced management • Improve the linkages between water science and water management in NSW • Provide research opportunities for water specialists in NSW. NETHERLAND; PhD Position in Imaging Genetics of Intelligence

Job description
Understanding how genetic variation affects brain functioning related to general intelligence is one of the greatest scientific challenges of the 21st century. Advances in both molecular genetics and functional and structural neuroimaging have provided the tools necessary to explore the effects of genetic variants on brain functioning. Identifying the brain mechanisms that underlie intelligence is paramount to our understanding of how individual differences in general intelligence emerge and how such differences may confer vulnerability to cognitive dysfunction. This project aims to identify these brain mechanisms by combining expertise from two excellent research groups, using an imaging genetics approach towards human intelligence. This project is a collaboration between the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, Nijmegen, and the Centre for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research, Amsterdam. You will be based within the Cognitive Neurology group at the Donders Institute ( http://www.ru.nl/donders) and will have frequent contacts with the genomics group at CNCR ( http://www.cncr.nl).

Requirements
University Graduate
You have a Masters degree (or equivalent) in a field related to cognitive neuroscience (e.g. experimental/cognitive psychology, biology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence). Excellent candidates from other scientific backgrounds will also be considered. Good programming skills (Matlab) are highly desirable. Familiarity with neuroimaging techniques (functional and structural) and in genetic statistics are certainly an asset. Proficiency in oral and written English as well as good social skills are also required.

The mission of the Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging is to conduct cutting-edge research in cognitive neuroscience. UK; Unilever PhD Studentship

In order to predict environmental fate of chemicals the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development has established standardised laboratory methods to estimate biodegradation in the environment. However, in many parts of the world, particularly in developing regions, untreated waste water is routinely emitted directly into surface water. This presents a number of difficulties for conventional risk assessments for down-the-drain’ chemicals. An alternative risk assessment model, based on the “impact zone” (IZ) concept, has been proposed for such direct discharge’ conditions. In this model, chemicals are assessed in terms of their potential impact on river recovery processes and in terms of their predicted concentration at the end of an “impact zone”, within which the ecosystem is impacted by other pollutants.

At Unilever a laboratory-based simulation system using a continuous flow river model has been constructed in which microbial biofilms are allowed to develop to simulate natural conditions under which biodegradation takes place. This system allows the behaviour and associated ecological risks of biodegradable chemicals to be assessed under direct discharge conditions.

In this PhD project you will investigate fundamental relationships between microbial biomass density and diversity, system pre-exposure to chemicals and the rate of biodegradation processes. A range of cutting edge molecular community profiling methods will be used, including the use of high throughput sequencing techniques. The results will be used to optimise the continuous river flow model system to provide a more realistic assessment of natural biodegradation processes in laboratory systems.

The student will have the opportunity to spend up to 6 months of the PhD at Unilever’s research and development centre in Bedfordshire.

UK; Rural Digital Economy Research Hub PhD Studentships

The University of Aberdeen is inviting applications for a number of PhD studentships on offer as a result of the development of a new Rural Digital Economy Research Hub funded by the UK Research Councils.

The Digital Economy Hub based at Aberdeen is one of three such centres in the UK. An award of £12.4M will fund a programme of research over the next five years, which will explore how digital technologies can be developed to enhance the delivery of crucial services such as healthcare and transport in rural areas across the UK. AUSTRALIA; APA(I) Dairy Processinig PhD Scholarship

Scholarship Description

The viability of the Australian dairy industry relies heavily on the manufacture and export of milk powders and dairy protein concentrates. In an earlier ARC Linkage Project, we achieved a significant breakthrough in the manufacture of dairy concentrates by using ultrasound to lower viscosity and improve heat stability. In this PhD project, we will consider the impact of ultrasound when applied upstream of dairy membrane processes. Results will be used to increase the energy efficiency of Australian dairy manufacturing plants and to develop novel heat stable dairy ingredients.There will be strong interaction during the project with personnel at Dairy Innovation Australia and at dairy factories owned by their member companies. The student can expect to gain direct experience of dairy operations through factory visits, an understanding of membrane science and technology as well as analytical skills in protein chemistry and analysis.

interdisciplinary training and analysis

15 Early-Stage Researchers (ESR) at the PhD student level
The GATEWAYS project conducts interdisciplinary climate change research on the ocean circulation and its linking with climate processes on regional to global scales. The project combines modern observations, climate (ocean, atmosphere) modelling and marine palaeoclimatology. GATEWAYS sets out to test the sensitivity of the ocean circulation to changing climates of the past. It will assess the dynamics of the ocean circulation as a function of climate change; the influence of ocean circulation on continental climate; and the impact of inter-ocean water transports on the basin- wide overturning circulation.

The project provides training in laboratory-based analytical protocols and instrumentation, data processing and management, and numerical climate modelling. Complementary skills training focuses on project management and communication techniques. Trainees receive an integrated interdisciplinary grounding in the marine and climate sciences; proficiency in analytical procedures, climate modelling and statistical data processing; managerial skills to design and carry out research in an efficient and pragmatic way.
