The goal of PhD programs in IIIT-Delhi is to train students to become top class researchers who can be part of the global research ecosystem, and contribute to research organizations and research universities across the world.

For its PhD (Computer Science) program, IIIT-D invites applications for admission for 2010 in following research areas:

Collaborative PhD Program: As part of its PhD program, IIIT-Delhi has successfully started a "focused collaborative PhD program" with selected partner groups/institutes across the world. In addition to the above mentioned features of PhD at IIIT-D, other features of collaborative PhD program are:

• A student is admitted to PhD program at IIIT-D, from where he/she will get the degree. Interview for admission may be done jointly by IIIT-D and the partner group
• At least two supervisors: main supervisor will be from IIIT-D and may have an external co-supervisor from the partner Institution
• After completing the course work and starting the research, the student may spend 3 months to 1 year with the co-supervisor at the partner group/institution
• While at the partner group or organization, the partner will pay the stipend as per their norms

Eligibility: For both programs (regular PhD and collaborative PhD), IIIT-D is looking for candidates who have good programming expertise, solid foundations in CS/Maths, and interest in pursuing research in one of the above mentioned areas. Eligibility criteria for applying: A person who has good academic record throughout and graduated within the last two years with a BTech/BE/MTech/MS/ME in CS/IT/ECE/EE with a good academic record (at least a CGPA of 7.5 or equivalent in IITs/NITs, or in the top 10% in his/her CS/IT/ECE/EE batch from other institutions). Requirements may be relaxed for candidates with publications/ R&D/software development experience in their area of interest.

Sponsored Full Time Candidates: This category comprises of students who are working professionals and are sponsored by the reputed organization by giving an undertaking. They will not be entitled to any financial assistance from the Institute, fee waiver, and on-campus placement. Admission process will be same as for regular candidates. For sponsored candidates, a tuition fee of Rs. One Lakh per year will be charged.

Admission Process: Based on the facts furnished in the application, a screening will be performed and selected candidates will be asked to appear for a competitive entrance process that includes written and programming tests and interview. Written test may be objective or short subjective. Questions will be from Data Structures, Algorithms, Discrete Maths, Theory of Computation, and Probability Theory. In the programming test, candidates will be asked to write and execute a program in one of three languages (C, C++, JAVA). Based on the performance in written and programming tests, selected candidates will be interviewed.

Clarifications:

• MCA/MSc(CS/IT/ECE) degree is considered equivalent to the BTech/BE degree. Such students are also eligible to apply with the condition that in their undergraduate (i.e. B.Sc.) they should have Mathematics as one of the courses and keen interest/capability/commitment in pursuing research.
• Test/interview venue will be IIIT-D.

USA : 2 Postdoctoral positions available at University of Washington Seattle USA

I have opening for two postdocs in my lab at the Institute for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Washington. Our lab studies the development and regeneration of the mammalian inner ear. There is one opening in a project on regeneration focusing on vestibular system and another position in development of the cochlea. These positions require a Ph.D., solid molecular skills and good dissection ability. A background ininner ear biologyis not required.

Norway : two MSc scholarships with 10 months affiliation to the Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM) at UiO.

MIRLU is an interdisciplinary project coordinated by the Centre for Development and the Environment at the University of Oslo in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) at Ås, Arizona State University in the US, Universidad del Valle in Guatemala, and El Colegio de la Frontera Sur in Mexico. We are also in the process of establishing cooperation with the University of Denver in Colorado, US. The aim of this project is to explore the effect of international migration and remittances on land use and land use change in the area of origin of migrants.

Applicants granted a scholarship will write their thesis within the framework of the project. Each scholarship amounts to NOK 30 000. Priority will be given to applicants from Social Anthropology, Human Geography, Development Studies, and Development Economics. In addition to working with their MSc thesis the student is expected to occasionally assist in other project activities. Field work can start in the fall 2010 or spring 2011 semester.

Background  

The MILRU project aims to study how international migration and associated remittances influence the lives of those who migrate, their families and others in the places of origin of migrants, with special focus on land use and land cover change. Almost 1.5 million Guatemalans and 10 million Mexicans live and work in the USA and Canada. Most of them originate from rural areas. This project wants to examine how migrants are shaping perhaps the most valuable resources in rural Guatemala and Mexico, namely land. In addition to economic support to the families, migrants also remit money to collective projects in their communities of origin. Furthermore, the process of migration involves the diffusion of different social practices, ideas, behaviors, and identities. New knowledge, skills and technologies are also brought back by returning migrants.

Some of the relevant questions in this project include: How do migration shape land use and land distribution in rural Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico? How does remittances and the experience of migration change what people produce on their lands? How does such new land use practices influence forest and agriculture? How does migration affect the distribution of on-farm labor? Is the money earned or saved while away used to buy agricultural land or to start other types of business? Do they intensify agriculture on existing plots or expand agriculture into forests? Do returning migrants turn away from food production for own consumption to cultivate cash crops? How does new capital flows impact land ownership and distribution?

2. The admission to the doctoral courses is subject to a competitive examination based either on the assessment of both qualifications and examinations, or simply on the assessment of qualifications.

3. Doctoral scholarships1. The amount of each research doctoral scholarship is Euro 13,638.47, inclused of social security contributions. The scholarship is exempt from the local Italian Income tax on earnings (ILOR) and personal income tax (IRPEF). The scholarship covers the entire duration of the course.

2. In case of study periods abroad, the scholarship amount will be increased by 50% during this period.

3. The scholarship is paid in twelve (12) monthly instalments.

4. The scholarship cannot be accumulated with others (any type of qualification), except when they are awarded by national or international institutions and can be useful for integrating the education or research activities of the scholarship recipients during their study period abroad.

5. The scholarship will be paid for no longer than three years.

6. Those who have already been awarded a scholarship previously (even partially) cannot benefit from another one.

7. Candidates who intend to apply for the PhD scholarships bound to specific research topics (among those potentially included in Attachment “A”) have to specify the relevant code in the application form.

8. In the case where none of the applicants express a preference for a specific research area scholarship, the Board can propose to award this scholarship to one of the qualified shortlisted candidates, according to the ranking system and in compliance with the relative agreement.

The Ph.D. in Innovative Technologies of Information & Communication Engineering and Robotics is a three-year residential program with highly interdisciplinary connotation, where students can specialize in one of the following curricula:

the detailed list of academic courses taken. This list should contain information regarding credits, units (or equivalent) received, the grades received for each class taken, and the date when the final (or semester) examination was taken;

one a copy of their degree thesis (or two abstracts in English) and a copy of any other publication that they deem suitable;

the certificates of knowledge of the English language;

two copies of a Research Project, of no more than 3.000 words which describes the research activities that applicants would like to perform during the PhD course. The Research Project will include:


- a title;

- the scientific premises and the relevant bibliography;

- the aim and expectations of the research;

- the experimental methods and data analysis methods which will be used, where required;suitable;


at least two recommendation letters written by Faculty Members or other academics who have assessed and/or supervised the applicant’s work during his/her university studies, offering a comparative evaluation of the learning achievements, research potential, maturity, and professional inclinations of the candidate;

a numbered list of the documents attached.

Italy - PH.D. In Management -Innovation, Services and Sustainability at The Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna - Pisa

The PhD in Management deals with management topics which characterise current research activities in strategy, organization, innovation and international business. It is strongly oriented towards a deeper understanding of links between innovative services and competitiveness. Particular emphasis is given to:


- the management of innovation processes and the international competitiveness of firms, institutions, as well as local, regional and national systems

- the management of innovative services, such as environmental, insurance, health, technological and industrial policy services.



Admission Requirements

- possession of Master of Science (M.Sc.), or a Master of Arts (M.A.), or equivalent title and possession of an internationally acknowledged certificate specifying their level of English knowledge (as per art. 2, par. 3).

- Applicants should not be older than 35 years by June 14, 2010. Candidates older than 35 may be exceptionally admitted considering the experience gained.



Positions and grants


- 1 position with 1 fellowship (amounting to € 14.500 per year + free meals at school’s canteen + Campus facilities).

The School may also admit eligible candidates without grants up to a maximum number of 1 post. They will take part in the Programme at their own expenses but they will not have to pay any tuition fee.

the academic record with the full list of courses and grades (in English, in French, in German, in Spanish or in Italian);

copy of candidate Master Degree or equivalent;

two copies of a Research Project, of no more than 2,500 words, which will describe the research activities that applicants would like to perform during the PhD course. The Research Project should include: 1) title; 2) description of the main research question and discussion of previous research in the field; 3) description of research hypotheses, with brief discussion of key variables; 4) description of the research method that will be used and expected results; 5) possible policy implications;

at least two Reference Letters written by scholars who have supervised the applicant’s work during his/her university studies;

a numbered list of documents attached.

University of Exeter Master Scholarships 2010 for International Students

The University has up to 15 full tuition-fee merit-based scholarships for International students commencing taught Masters programmes starting in October 2010.

These scholarships are open to applicants interested in programmes from the following Schools only.

• Biosciences (two available)
• Education (one available)
• Geography (two available – one each for the Exeter and Cornwall campuses)
• Humanities (three available)
• Psychology (one available)
• Sports and Health Sciences (two available)

All of these awards are aimed at International students with high academic ability (typically at least an upper second class honours or international equivalent). Applicants who require pre-sessional English will be considered but will have a lower priority for an award than those applicants who already satisfy the University’s English language requirements. Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate, through their application, the potential to progress to doctoral study at the University of Exeter.

Please note that a number of programmes are specifically excluded from these Scholarships:

• Masters in Public Administration (MPA) within Humanities
• Masters by Research (MA or MSc), are excluded as they offer the opportunity to pursue a one year research project without a taught element.
• All Business School Masters are excluded from this Scholarship Scheme.

Please note applications will only be considered from candidates already holding an offer (either conditional or unconditional) from the University and who are classified as an International student for fee purposes. Successful applicants will be advised of the University’s decision by 14th June 2010 including any conditions for the award of the Scholarship (e.g. degree classification). Successful candidates will need to notify us of their acceptance of the Scholarship and return their deposit within three weeks of receiving our decision.
