Goldsmiths International Postgraduate Scholarship, Goldsmiths University of London

There are up to 10 scholarships available to prospective international students studying for a full-time taught Master’s programme . The scholarship provides a £5,000 fee waiver and is tenable for one year only.

To be eligible to apply you must have applied for a place on a full-time postgraduate taught degree, have an international fee liability and are self-financing to some extent. You will also need to demonstrate academic excellence and / or significant achievement in your chosen field of study.

Please note that current students are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Description : Forest and Nature for Society (FONASO) is a three-year world-class global Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate programme. The main objective of the Programme is to educate the leaders of the future generation of researchers, teachers and top management staff working with sustainable forest and nature management, in both tropical and temperate regions, to ensure wider societal benefits. Within forest and nature management, the Programme is focused on the scientific fields of (i) eco-nomics and policy, and (ii) ecology and silviculture. Emphasis is on applied research.

POSITION: PhD student position
in a research project sponsored by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) for 3 years. Salary according to the German scheme for state employees, i.e. 50 % of a PhD salary.

The interaction of the serine protease plasmin with endothelial cells as well as in cocultivation with monocytes and macrophages will be analyzed at the cellular and molecular level.

GOALS: i) Identify the receptor for the serine protease plasmin on human endothelial cells, ii) characterize the plasmin-induced signaling pathways in endothelial cells, iii) investigate the functional consequences of the plasmin-mediated cell activation in terms of inflammatory responses.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Isolation and cultivation of primary human endothelial cells and endothelial cell lines as well as primary cells from human blood. Identification of ‚target’ proteins proteolytic signaling by means of biochemical, chemical and physicochemical methods. Analysis of molecule-molecule interactions with ‚surface plasmon resonance’. Characterization of proinflammatory functions, e.g. gene induction, cytokine release and chemotaxis, and proinflammatory signaling, e.g. kinases and transcription factors.

REQUIREMENTS: Diploma or Master degree in Biochemistry, Biology or related areas. We expect a high level of motivation and the ability to work independently as well as in a team. Skills in cell or molecular biology are an advantage, but no precondition.

Contact address : We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative PhD student candidate (~4 years) to explore the wealth of genomic data from evolutionary perspective using bioinformatics approaches. Our group has a broad range of interests related to the functional evolution of genomes, and actively contributes to international genome analysis consortiums. The specific project will be developed together with the candidate.

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in bioinformatics, including programming skills (or the willingness and drive to acquire them), and a good understanding of molecular biology (preferably with some experience/background in molecular evolution). A Diploma or MSc degree in Biology or Bioinformatics, practical experience in the Unix environment, and fluency in English are required.

The project will be supervised by Prof. E. Zdobnov at the Department of Genetic Medicine and Development of the University of Geneva Medical School. We are also part of the renowned Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, and offer a stimulating research environment with excellent facilities.

[USA] Yale Information Society Project Fellowships for 2010-2011

The Yale Information Society Project is now accepting applications for 2010-2011 ISP postdoctoral fellowships at Yale Law School.

The Yale ISP resident fellowship is designed for recent graduates of law or Ph.D. programs who are interested in careers in teaching and public service in any of the following areas: law and innovation, media studies, Internet and telecommunications law, intellectual property law, access to knowledge, first amendment law, social software, digital education, privacy, cybersecurity, standards and technology policy, biotechnology, and law, technology, and culture generally.

Fellows receive a salary of approximately 44,000 USD plus Yale benefits. Fellows are expected to work on an independent scholarly project as well as help with administrative and scholarly work for the Information Society Project at Yale Law School. A number of special ISP visiting fellowships are also available for persons who provide their own sources of funding.

Application materials for resident or visiting fellowships should include the following:
A brief (one to five page) statement of the applicant’s proposed scholarly research;
A copy of the applicant’s resume;
A law school (or graduate school) transcript;

Research topic:
Quality attributes such as performance, reliability, availability, safety, and security have a probabilistic nature, and are important for almost all software development projects and for projects related to automotive, avionic and medical systems in particular. However it is hard constructing a system that fulfils requirements regarding these quality attributes. Consequently, also quality control at the system
runtime is required. Du to the probabilistic nature of these quality attributes this project aims to use statistical monitoring and forecasting techniques (e.g. time series analysis) as a novel quality control instrument for critical system components.

The Center of Systems Biology, University of Iceland (www.systemsbiology.is, CSB UoI), is looking to recruit a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join a growing effort focusing on systems biology of human metabolism. The research at the CSB UoI focuses on 1) human metabolism and 2) industrial biotechnology. The Center is an interdisciplinary center with the Schools of Medicine, Engineering and Natural Sciences participating.

The CSB UoI aims to characterize human disease using a systems biology approach. This research effort focuses on 1) expanding the currently available human metabolic reconstruction, 2) discovery of new functions and pathways in human metabolism using computational and experimental techniques, 3) phenotyping of human cell lines using metabolomic techniques, 4) computational and experimental analysis of metabolic changes associated with disease, and 5) high-throughput drug screening. We use the state-of-the-art computational methods to guide and design human cell culturing experiments as well as metabolomic measurements. These technologies are embedded in a biologically driven research program that aims at systematic understanding of human metabolism, disease manifestation and drug target identification.
The successful candidate will be expected to work on expanding the human metabolic reconstruction and lead the computational gap filling effort. The postholder will also mine databases and genomic information, participate in protein annotation of this human metabolism project and will be expected to provide curation and quality control for the protein functional annotation framework. In addition, the postholder will be part of a team to develop quantitative tools required to expand mass spectrometry capabilities and integrative bioinformatics at the CSB UoI.
The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in Bioinformatics or related field and have a strong background in biology as well as computational modelling. All projects at the CSB UoI are interdisciplinary; therefore, a strong motivation to collaborate with experimental groups is required. Programming skills and knowledge of computational methods used in systems biology are required. Knowledge of human metabolism and drug metabolism will be advantage. Individuals with backgrounds in metabolic network reconstruction or metabolic engineering are especially encouraged to apply. Furthermore, the candidate must be fluent in English. Additionally, the candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be capable of working within a team of biologists and programmers.
