The Training Group provides an intriguing research environment including seminars, workshops, training courses, assessment of progress and success and collaborations. The Training Group collaborates with the respective training group at the M.V. Lomonosov-University, Moscow, Russian Federation.
The fellowship (1200 Euro per month) is currently limited to the end of March 2011, but prolongation shall be made possible. Graduation will proceed in the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry of the University of Giessen to achieve a Dr. rer. nat. (PhD equivalent).
Project description: We have described the existence of the RNA degrading and RNA tailing exosome in the hyperthermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus (Evguenieva-Hackenberg et al. 2003, EMBO reports 4: 889-893) and have further analyzed its biochemical properties and substrate selectivity (Evguenieva-Hackenberg et al., Biochemistry 2008, Roppelt et al., submitted). The research will focus on the role of the individual domains of the subunits Rrp4 (N-terminal, S1 and KH domains) and Csl4 (N-terminal, S1 and Zn-ribbon domain) in selection and/or unwinding of RNA substrates. The work will include handling of radioactively labeled transcripts.
Prerequisites:
Applicants should hold a M.Sc. or Diploma degree in biology or a related life science discipline. Candidates should be highly motivated and should have a strong background in molecular biology and biochemistry. Courses in the PhD program are taught in English. Therefore, a working knowledge of English is mandatory, whereas speaking German is useful, but not strictly required. Applications of candidates not speaking German are welcome.
The Justus-Liebig University Giessen is an equal opportunity employer. Applications of severely disabled with the same suitability are preferred.
