Four scholarships are available for overseas fee-paying students who are proposing to register for the full-time MA Religions or MA History: Asia/ Africa at SOAS for the academic session 2011/12.The scholarship, valued at £15,000, will be used to meet the cost of tuition fees at the overseas rate and the remaining sum may be used towards maintenance.

Eligible Programmes and number of Scholarships

The full-time MA in History: Asia Africa (2 scholarships)
The Full-time MA Religions (2 scholarships)

Candidate Criteria

Applicants must have applied for a place to study at the School at least four weeks before the scholarship closing date in order to be considered for these Scholarships.
Applicants must be top-ranked in the appropriate discipline. Applicants must possess or expect to be awarded a First Class Honours Degree or equivalent. Applicants with upper second class level may also apply, but will not be given preference. Students with a non-UK degree will be adjudged to be in the top rank by their referees and transcript.
The scholarship is open to applicants paying fees at the Overseas rate only.
Candidate Assessment

Candidates will be assessed on academic merit by an Advisory Panel consisting of three academic members of the Faculty of Art and Humanities.
The assessment of your application will be based on the information in your application. Selectors will be looking at the degree results and also at academic references, statement and other relevant information.
Scholarship Closing Date

The closing date is Friday, 29 April 2011. It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit a complete application by the deadline. Incomplete or late applications will be deemed invalid.

Applicants must have also applied for a place to study at the School at least four weeks before the scholarship closing date (ie by 1 April 2011) in order to be considered for this scholarship.

Notification of Results

All candidates will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of their application, generally by the end of June. The successful candidate will also be notified in writing. If you have not heard from us by mid-July, please contact the Scholarships Officer.

Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Full-fee Scholarships

Loughborough University is delighted to announce full-fee scholarships for international full-time taught postgraduate students who are currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa.

These will be known as the Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships. The scholarships will cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year (replacing any Departmental or Loughborough University scholarships or bursaries you may already have been awarded).

The scholarships are being funded through a combination of generous external funding and University funds. The University will award a limited number of scholarships and the standards required are very high.

Students will be expected to fund their travel and maintenance costs through other sources.

Application Process and Eligibility Criteria

For 2011 entry the scholarship application procedure is an open competition. Students may only apply for the scholarship after an offer for a place has been made. Students who are in possession of an offer (conditional or unconditional) of a place on a postgraduate taught course can apply for the scholarship using the application form which can be downloaded below.

The deadline for applications is 30th April 2011.

Applications will be initially shortlisted and the final decision on the awards will be made by a selection panel of senior staff of the University. The selection panel will use the following eligibility criteria when assessing applications:

Currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa
Evidence of exceptional academic achievement (normally a 1st Class Honours Degree)
Commitment to return to their home country on completion of postgraduate programme
Evidence of the ability and commitment to making a significant contribution to their home country on their return
Full understanding of the costs involved in coming to study and live in the UK
Evidence of strong motivation and initiative to secure funds to cover the remainder of the costs involved
Applicants are advised to spend considerable effort ensuring that this application reaches the selectors in a form that is clear, well presented and which reflects your abilities and motivation.

The ERASMUS MUNDUS master degree in Quaternary and Prehistory is meant to prepare professionals with the following requirements:

Master and PhD Scholarships at Graduate Institute Geneva, Switzerland

The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studiesis an institution of research and higher education dedicated to the cross-cutting fields of international relations and development studies.

Each year the Graduate Institute awards several scholarships to Master and PhD students. Awards are based on academic merit and financial need.

There are three categories of scholarship:

Full scholarships: with a few exceptions, these are worth CHF 18,000. Recipients are exempt from Graduate Institute tuition fees; however they are still required to pay University of Geneva tuition fees. Some full grants are awarded subject to special conditions (duration of study and/or geographical origin of students).
Partial scholarships: the value of these grants varies according to the individual needs of the recipient student. These grants do not cover tuition fees which recipients of partial grants are required to pay.
Tuition scholarships: these grants cover tuition fees for one academic year. They are awarded to exceptional students. Scholarships are awarded for one year, with the possibility of renewal.
Admissions

Based on a rigorous selection process, applications to our study programmes are reviewed once a year. Applications must reach us no later than 15 January 2011 for the following autumn semester; the academic year begins in mid-September.

The admissions process for Master and PhD programmes beginning in September 2011 is now open. The closing date for receipt of applications is 15 January 2011.

Language requirements

The Institute is a bilingual English-French institution; students are therefore required to demonstrate their knowledge of these languages by including the relevant certificates with their application forms.

English
Level required: candidates are required to demonstrate excellent command of the language, both written and spoken, confirmed by a language certificate: see details. Candidates of English mother-tongue and those who have completed secondary or post-secondary education in English, confirmed by a diploma, are exempt from this requirement.

French
Level required: a passive knowledge of French can be acquired during the first study semester; knowledge of French will be tested at the beginning of the second semester (February or March).

Candidates of French mother-tongue, candidates who have completed secondary or post-secondary education in French, confirmed by a diploma, or candidates who have obtained a French diploma equivalent to a DELF B2 are exempt from this requirement. Request for a waiver of the French requirement: candidates with no prior knowledge of French may request a waiver [pdf]. Upon successful acceptance to the Institute, they will be required to attend an intensive French course during the three weeks preceding the beginning of the autumn semester and for the duration of the first semester; upon completion of the course they will be required to pass a language test.

Masters Academic Requirements

Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree (minimum 180 ECTS credits) or an equivalent qualification in a discipline relevant to the chosen programme:

Master in International Affairs (MIA):
Bachelor’s degree in law, economics, history or political science – or a related discipline, or a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in international relations. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in another discipline and with a sound academic record are also eligible to apply.

Master in Development Studies (MDEV):
Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, sociology, law, economics, history, political science, geography – or a related discipline, or an interdisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in development studies or international relations.

Master in Anthropology/Sociology of Development:
Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, sociology or a related discipline, or a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in international relations or development studies.

Master in International Economics:
Bachelor’s degree in economics, or a related discipline, or a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in international relations. Applicants to the Master in International Economics must have passed the GRE test.

Master in International History and Politics:
Bachelor’s degree in history, political science or a related discipline, or a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in international relations.

Master in International Law:
Bachelor’s degree in law, or a related discipline, or a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in international relations.

Master in International Relations:

The MEEES programme is an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course, that aims to provide higher-level education in the field of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology. Graduate students involved in this Erasmus Mundus Masters course have the possibility of following a 18-month MSc programmes on either Earthquake Engineering or Engineering Seismology. In addition, the proposed EM Masters course envisages also the possibility of students following a 18-month study programme that leads to the attainment of a Masters degree on Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology.

If following the Engineering Seismology option, students will acquire the ability to design, execute and evaluate assessments of seismic hazard for site-specific engineering projects, for earthquake loss assessments, and for emergency planning scenarios. Students following the Earthquake Engineering option will acquire the ability to undertake seismic design of new structures and the assessment and strengthening of existing structures. The combined option of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology will enable students to acquire technical competence in both areas.

The MEEES consortium comprises five academic institutions, namely (i) the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (IUSS), (ii) the University of Pavia (UNIPV), (iii) the University of Patras, (iv) the University of Grenoble Joseph Fourier and (v) Middle East Technical University. It is noted, however, that the first two institutions, which are independent but are also both based in Pavia, jointly organise and run the postgraduate earthquake engineering programme in Pavia, through the Centre for Post-Graduate Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (ROSE School). Hence in subsequent sections of this website, the term ROSE School is employed to refer to the activites of IUSS/UNIPV institutions within the scope of the MEEES consortium.

The One-World-Scholarship Programme for Developing Countries, Austria

One World-The Fellowship Programme is aimed at students from developing countries in Austrian universities and aims to contribute to the peaceful coexistence of people from different countries of origin through improving equal opportunities, intercultural dialogue, understanding and collaboration. It has been established within the Austrian Educational Cooperation, and together with the other programs which supports their concerns (the fight against poverty, conserve resources, peacekeeping, etc), the creation and expansion of qualified staff and Consequently, the advancement of education, and economic systems (capacity and institutional development), with lasting effects.

It is complementary to other scholarship programmes and laid out globally, it enhances the ability for independent, creative, critical and self-determined thinking and acting and shall strengthen the competence for innovative problem solving strategies. The OWS contributes to the socially required production of knowledge and awareness, it promotes a global perspective and the creation of the globally educated citizen. It attaches a high significance to regional, international and trans-cultural networks. The programme is co-financed (government, church and private funds and own resources of the recipients of the benefits) and significantly contributes to the economic, social and cultural development of the southern countries.

The One-World-Scholarship-Programme is directed at students from Africa, Asia and Latin America who are interested in development policy and who have come to Austria on their own initiatives, in order to complete their education. With their decision for studying abroad, the students have demonstrated a high degree of assertiveness, creativity and mobility. The scholarship will contribute to following up on the right of education also for those critical and intellectual young people who will find poor conditions in their home countries. These aspects will apply still more strongly to women. So scholarships will offer a chance making up for the ethnic, religious, social and regional discrimination, and in individual cases, also for violations of human rights. The scholarships are divided into:

Scholarships for the promotion of students doing bachelor degrees (application in Austria)
Scholarships for the promotion of students doing doctoral degrees (application in Austria)
Scholarships for the promotion of students doing masters degrees and training programmes (application in Austria or in the country of origin)
Through study-accompanying measures (the entire educational measures in the OWS will massively support the publicity for development policy and the intercultural dialogue) – like conducting workshops and seminars on returning home and reintegration, job prospects and job applications as well as respective counselling talks and in-between homeward journeys – the project target of a successful occupational reintegration in the countries of origin can be essentially supported.

The OWS is conceived as a comprehensive programme, which will comprise scholarships and special study expenses, study-accompanying measures and tutoring, study-accompanying training, supporting reintegration and follow up-contacts. The OWS is a mobility programme acknowledged by the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Art (in terms of scholarship regulations). Recipients of the scholarships are exempt from tuition fees.

The scholarship programme is co-financed with means from the Austrian Development Cooperation, the Catholic Womens Movement and private funds.

The monthly allowance amounts between 500 and 550 Euro. Students can apply for the scholarships by using the application form between the middle of March till the end of May each year.

ATKV Bursary 2011, South Africa

The ATKV, in collaboration with the dawn Trust (DST) this year again offering scholarships and loans to students that certain African-based studies at institutions in South Africa to undertake. This initiative represents the ATKV able to grant awards to be increased to 17 which is a big difference for qualifying candidates means.

The ATKV Platinum award valued at R100 000 is awarded annually to a Masters or doktorsgraadstudent a South African university. This year’s award will be made to a candidate doing research on Dutch in the courts. The scholarship can be used for both the research component as well as the awareness of this issue in the public media and other information channels.

The annual postgraduate merit scholarship will be increased to R30 000 and is aimed at a deserving student to prepare an honors or masters in their particular field of study to acquire.

The ATKV offers five undergraduate scholarships of R60 000 each for students in an African study (preferably in education or the media) want to study. The study is in Dutch at a university in South Africa and the scholarship money over a period of three years awarded by annual payments of R20 000 per scholarship.

With His Majesty’s consent, the Government of Brunei Darussalam is offering annual scholarships under a special scholarship award scheme, commencing in 2011/2012 academic session.

Tenable in Brunei Darussalam, the aim of the Scholarship awards is to provide students, with the opportunity to study at Universiti Brunei Darussalam [UBD], Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali [UNISSA] and Institut Teknologi Brunei [ITB].

The academic year for UBD, UNISSA and ITB commences in July / August 2011.

Eligibility

Applicants must be citizens of ASEAN, OIC, Commonwealth Member Countries and others and must be between the ages of 18 – 25 at the commencement of the academic session for which they are applying for admission. However, under exceptional case, the age limit requirement may be waived for candidates who are applying for Masters and PhD Programmes.

The awards are NOT eligible to Brunei Permanent Residents and foreigners residing in Brunei Darussalam for more than three months.

Tenure of Scholarship

The Scholarship award is normally tenable according to the duration of the specific programme which is four years for an Honours First Degree or one to two years for a Master’s Degree or three years for a Doctoral programme at UBD, UNISSA and ITB, two and a half years for HND at ITB on full-time basis.
The Scholarship award is subject to the scholar maintaining satisfactory conduct and satisfactory progress in the scholar’s studies (this requires the scholar to maintain an active registration status by passing the prescribed semester examinations and obtaining the minimum course credit units).

Terms of Award

The scholarship covers:

from the scholar’s home country to Brunei Darussalam at the commencement of the programme;
from Brunei Darussalam to the scholar’s home country after the completion of the programme.
Free medical and dental treatment at any Government hospital subject to conditions stipulated by the Ministry of Health. However there will be administrative charges for every consultation (currently at B$3.00), admission to class A1, A2 and A3 wards and charges for certain dental treatment as stated in the schedule 1 Dental Treatment issued by the Ministry of Health.
Other allowances payable will include:
Monthly personal allowance of B$500.00.
Annual Book Allowance of B$600.00.
Baggage Allowance maximum of B$250.00 to ASEAN and $500.00 to non ASEAN region.
The scholar is required to sign an agreement with the Brunei Darussalam Government to complete the course of study, failing which he/she will be liable to refund to the Brunei Darussalam Government all expenditures that have been extended on him / her.

Program Offered

The scholarships are offered for Undergraduate, Posgraduate (Master and PhD)

Completed application forms, together with certified copies of relevant certificates and documents, must be returned to the Technical Assistance Department not later than 15 December 2010.

The awarding body reserves the right to reject any applicant. No award will be made if there is no applicant of sufficient merit. The decision on selection of any candidate is final. Equiries or disputes regarding its decisions will not be entertained.
