NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Conduct independent research and development in one or more areas of computer science of interest to CASC, such as: signal processing, machine learning; data mining, and statistics.
- Document research and development progress via technical reports, journal publications, and conference presentations.
- Develop software to evaluate novel computational techniques.
- Interact with scientists from DOE programs to help address their computational needs.
- Identify and pursue complementary research problems.
- Publish papers and attend conferences and workshops.
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ESH&Q, Security, and business practice requirements and policies.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Recent Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Research experience in signal processing, data mining, statistics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct high quality research and to develop implementations to evaluate the results.

[China] TWAS-CAS Fellowships for Visiting Scholars in China

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and TWAS offer up to fifteen fellowships per year to visiting scholars from developing countries (other than China) who wish to pursue advanced research in natural sciences.

Programme Details

TWAS-CAS Visiting Scholar Fellowships in natural sciences are tenable for minimum period of one to a maximum of three months at the research institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Eligible CAS institutions: More than 80 CAS institutes in China participate in this Fellowship programme.
The language of instruction is English.
International travel (return economy class by the shortest route) and visa expenses will be covered by TWAS.
CAS will provide a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation, food and health insurance. Only emergency medical aid will be available, if necessary. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency.
Applicants must be affiliated with a university or research centre in their home country.
Applicants already on site in the host country are not eligible.
Applicants must provide evidence that they will return to their home country upon completion of their Fellowships.

Applicants must submit an official Acceptance Letter from the host institution to TWAS and CAS when applying, or by the deadline at the latest. A sample of this letter can be found in the application form downloadable from the link at the bottom of this page.
The Fellowships do not include provisions for accompanying family members.

[Brazil] TWAS-CNPq Postgraduate Fellowship Programme

The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Brasilia, Brazil, and TWAS offer up to fifty fellowships per year to young scientists from developing countries (other than Brazil) who wish to pursue research leading towards a PhD in natural sciences.

Important: The CNPq postgraduate fellowship call for applications is now open and applications for full-time and sandwich PhD are accepted.

Programme Details

TWAS-CNPq Postgraduate Fellowships are tenable at research institutions in Brazil for a period of up to four years and are awarded to students from developing countries (other than Brazil) to enable them to pursue all or part (SANDWICH or FULL-TIME) of their research leading towards a PhD degree in the natural sciences.
The academic year in Brazil usually begins on 1 March and the second semester in early August of each year. Candidates will enrol for their PhD at the host institution and must observe the academic calendar of the host institution and be ready to start their Fellowship on the first day of classes/courses (most likely in Portuguese).

CNPq will provide a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation, food and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency.
Information about living conditions, such as possibilities of accommodation, transportation, and any other issues related to the candidate’s stay in Brazil must be obtained locally, directly from the host institution. Neither TWAS nor CNPq can provide this information.
The language of instruction is Portuguese for most institutions, and in a few institutions English.

Eligibility
Applicants for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:

Be a maximum age of 35 years on 31 December of the application year.
Be permanent residents in a developing country (other than Brazil).
Hold a Master’s degree in a field of the natural sciences.
Provide evidence that s/he will return to her/his home country on completion of the fellowship.
Not take up other assignments during the period of her/his fellowship.
Provide an official acceptance letter from the host institution (please refer to the sample available at http://ping.fm/oDzSd)) and be willing to register for a PhD degree in the natural sciences at a participating CAPES-listed Brazilian institution (see point 3 above).
Prove knowledge of Portuguese or provide a certificate of proficiency in Spanish or English (if these languages are not the candidate’s mother tongue).
Have an updated Curriculum Vitae on CNPq’s Lattes Platform.
Present a detailed research plan.
Be financially responsible for any accompanying family members.
For sandwich postgraduate fellowship applicants only:

Be officially registered as a PhD student in her/his home country for at least 12 months before presenting her/his candidacy to the sandwich postgraduate fellowship.
Have a letter of agreement of her/his supervisor in her/his home country.

[USA] Doctoral Fellowship for Environmental Transitions and Emerging Infectious Diseases 2010

The East-West Center-National Science Foundation Doctoral Fellowship for Environmental Transitions and Emerging Infectious Diseases (hereafter, the EWC-NSF Doctoral Fellowship) provides doctoral funding for graduate students to participate in educational and research programs at the East-West Center while pursuing doctoral study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The research is a collaborative project with the East-West Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa and Hanoi University of Agriculture. The project includes participation of students in an NSF-funded IGERT.
EWC-NSF Doctoral Fellows will work closely with East-West Center researchers and University of Hawaii faculty, as well as with researchers in Vietnam involved in the East-West Center—National Science Foundation Project for Environmental Transitions and Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Fitness Space Characterisation for Stochastic Combinatorial Optimisation

Research topic:
Stochastic optimisation methods such as Genetic Algorithms and other evolutionary approaches are used to find approximate solutions to combinatorial problems when the problems are too complex to be solved deterministically through mathematical approaches.

So far, evolutionary algorithms have been applied to individual combinatorial problems such as bin packing and resource allocation. Certain algorithm and parameter variations are regularly reported to improve results obtained from a particular problem. This project aims at investigating ways – stochastic, mathematical or statistical – of probing the fitness space for clues about the characteristics of the problem’s fitness space.

The ultimate goal is to find common characteristics of problems and to identify the solvers, which work best for such characteristics.

These awards acknowledge students who have reached a high level of academic achievement throughout their high school career. With the exception of the Wesson Honors Scholarship, there is neither a separate application or deadline for these scholarships. As part of our rolling admissions process, students will be informed of the award decision at the point of acceptance. Wesson Honors Scholarship - up to $68,000 over four years
Students with a 3.75 GPA are eligible to apply for the Wesson Honors Scholarship. This $17,000 per year scholarship includes direct admission into the Wesson Honors Program. It is renewable annually for four years of study dependent upon good academic standing in the Wesson Honors Program.

Founders Scholarship - up to $64,000 over four years
Students with a 3.5 GPA are eligible for the Founders Scholarship. Students receiving this $16,000 per year award have graduated from high school with honors level classes and a rigorous college preparatory program. It is renewable annually for four years of study dependent upon maintaining a 3.3 GPA while enrolled at Colby-Sawyer.

Presidential Scholarship - up to $56,000 over four years
Students with a 3.3 GPA are eligible for the Presidential Scholarship. This $14,000 award is renewable annually for four years of study dependent upon full-time enrollment and maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

Chargers Scholarship - up to $48,000 over four years
Students who have a minimum 3.0 GPA are eligible for this award. This $12,000 per year award and is renewable annually for four years dependent upon full-time enrollment and maintaining a 2.75 GPA.
