The Work Product;
Successful projects should push the boundaries of current thinking and carry lessons that can be applied to a variety of settings. Fellowship Expectations:
At the heart of the fellowship is the Open Society Institute itself. Fellows are invited to join the rich and diverse OSI community, a global network of activists and institutions dedicated to defending civil society and improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable citizens.Fellows are expected to take full advantage of OSI’s expansive reach and work to bring new people and fresh ideas into the organization’s ambit. The program anticipates that most fellows will spend a portion of their fellowship term at one of the organization’s main offices, in New York, Washington, London, Brussels, or Budapest, or at an OSI regional foundation. While in residence, they are strongly encouraged to organize and participate in conferences and program events and may be asked to run a seminar involving OSI staff and outside colleagues. Fellowship Placement And Term:
OSI considers applicants from all parts of the world. Most fellows spend a portion of their term in one or more OSI offices. Fellows may work out of multiple OSI offices during their term.Fellows who wish to work on their project in a country in which they do not have citizenship must satisfy and comply with applicable visa requirements. OSI helps fellows obtain necessary visas and covers all associated costs.Fellowships are awarded for one year. In some cases OSI considers requests for shorter or longer durations. Preference is given to applications for full-time fellowships, but OSI also considers applicants who can only work part-time on their projects.

Fellowship Support:
For a full-time fellow based in the U.S., the stipend ranges from $60,000 to $100,000. For fellows based in other countries, appropriate adjustments will be made to reflect the economic circumstances and costs of living in those countries. Stipends are based on several factors including work experience,seniority, prior earnings, and the proportion of time committed to the fellowship. The stipend does not necessarily equal the applicant’s current salary. In certain cases, fellows will receive additional financial support to enable them to meet the residency expectation.In most cases, OSI provides fellows with communications support to convey their work to a broader audience and influence current debates. OSI also integrates fellows into its networks of individual and organizational partners and grantees.OSI may cover additional project expenses such as travel (including airfare and hotel), visa costs, part-time research assistance, conference fees and health insurance. Fellowship expenses should not include operational or programmatic costs, such as employees and physical infrastructure. Around two dozen Berlin Prizes are conferred annually. Past Berlin Prize recipients have included historians, economists, poets, art historians, journalists, legal scholars, anthropologists, musicologists, public policy experts, and writers, among others. The Academy does not accept project proposals in mathematics and the hard sciences.In addition to placing a high priority on the independent work of its fellows, the Academy is in a unique position to aid fellows in establishing professional and general networks both in Berlin and beyond. Job Description: This Ph.D. position is financed by Project EFESOS (Environmental Friendly Efficient Enjoyable and Safety Optimized Systems). EFESOS is a horizontal project that involves different research domains, different organizations and departments at Volvo Car Corporation, strategic partners, universities and institutes.When designing car HMIs, one of the challenges is how to inform the driver about the traffic situation and potential danger, so to help the driver to drive in an environmental friendly way and to avoid accidents. More and more personal vehicles are equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and this will increase in the future. The traffic situation and information gained from ADAS systems can be presented to the driver through visual display and auditory display.

This part of the work aims at investigating how which modality or which combination of modalities could be used to design optimal car HMIs.In this project, we are not designing for warning systems, rather presenting the information during the normal driving situation so to avoid accidents from happening. Therefore, for both visual and auditory displays, the information shall be presented in a natural and intuitive way to avoid extra workload and causing distraction.As a Ph.D. student you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your time will be devoted to other duties at the department, mainly teaching. The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research within the project and you are expected to obtain a Ph.D. within a maximum of 5 years.

Required Qualifications:
A suitable background for the applicant is a strong Master’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering or cognitive science, with focus on human computer interaction design. Experience from different interaction design, human factors in vehicle safety study is preferable. The interests and capability of doing research work is the basic demand. A good M.Sc. thesis or publications with research focus can add extra points into the application. It would be better if the applicants have good knowledge and sensitivity on music and sounds. Good oral and written communication skills in English are required. Knowledge of Swedish is not a prerequisite for this position. The start of this position is planned for Oct 1st, 2010.

A four year (1+3) BBSRC Doctoral Training Grant (DTG) PhD studentship is available in the School of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Liverpool, to provide training in the application of Systems Approaches to Biological Research. Students will participate in taught courses and research projects in Year 1 (MRes in Post-Genomic Science) and follow a three year PhD training programme in Years 2-4. The University has outstanding cross-departmental enabling technologies including Advanced Genomics and Microarray Facilities, Functional Proteomics laboratories and Bioinformatics expertise.

The opportunity to develop skills in Systems Biology, that bridge the gap between experimental and theoretical knowledge, will provide excellent career prospects for the successful applicant.The PhD project will focus on the optimisation of mesenchymal stem cell culture systems to produce in vitro tissue-replicas for therapeutic use. Three-dimensional cell culture systems are used as drug screening systems, as in vitro models of intact tissue, and in tissue engineering. This project will compare 2D and 3D culture systems with intact tissues of mesenchymal origin. Transcriptomics and bioinformatics will be used to discover specific regulators of three-dimensional tissue function. Data evaluation and rationalisation will be used to make directed iterative improvements to the engineered culture systems and produce engineered skeletal tissues of practical use in research and medicine.This studentship is funded by the BBSRC for UK or for EU citizens who will have been resident in the UK for at least three years. Candidates should hold a First or Upper Second class Honours degree in a relevant Biological subject, or in Computer Science/Mathematical Sciences if accompanied by experience in the Life Sciences. Applicants who already hold a Masters degree in
a relevant discipline will not have a formal requirement to complete the MRes year, but will take modules as required to gain additional skills in key areas.

LIFE - Faculty of Life Sciences is one of Europe's leading university environments in the areas of veterinary science, food and natural resources.

Through financial support from the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen, 8 PhD scholarships are available within Climate Change; Impacts, Mitigation and Adaptation. The three-year studentships are expected to be effective from 1 December or soon thereafter.

Qualification requirements

• In connection with the appointment to the post special importance will be attached to the applicant having the professional and personal qualifications stated below:
• Passed Master’s degree in relation to the above subject area(s)
• The PhD candidate is also required to have research potential, to be enterprising, to possess good interpersonal skills and to be qualified for enrolment into the PhD programme.

Terms of employment
The post will be filled in accordance with the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations. The post is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.
