work towards a PhD degree in Sciences, orientation Statistics. Suitable candidates

There are two positions available: PhD researcher in non-parametric and semi-parametrics statistics.

Among recent research topics covered by the team are, for example: flexible modeling of functions via local polynomial fitting, splines or other regularization techniques, modeling dependencies via copulas and the development of methods for statistical inference, testing procedures and the selection of smoothing parameters, variable selection in additive models and varying coefficient models. The BioInterfaces International Graduate School (BIF-IGS) provides the recruitment and training platform for the BioInterfaces Research Progamme at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany.

The BioInterfaces Programme brings together biologists, chemists, physicists, IT specialists, engineers, and material scientists with the common goal of controlling living systems, and bridges the gap between fundamental research and development of application- oriented technologies and products. The programme is tightly linked with the Universities of Karlsruhe and Heidelberg. In addition to offering the right of graduation, both Universities contribute scientifically to the BioInterfaces research school. While the University of Karlsruhe is more technically oriented, the University of Heidelberg has an emphasis on biomedical research and basic physics of surface interactions and microscopy.

Thus BIF-IGS offers outstanding graduate students education and training in trans- and multi-disciplinary research areas that allow students to prepare for future careers in professional fields such as health sciences, biotechnology, physics, chemistry and environmental science. Students will gain experience by working in a stimulating environment using state-of-the- art technology in an interdisciplinary context that promotes the ability of cross-frontier thinking. The University of Sydney World Scholars awards provide opportunities for academically gifted PhD candidates who have developed innovative research projects to undertake a PhD degree at the University of Sydney with financial support. This prestigious award will attract high-quality research candidates from a broad range of countries and disciplines. Candidates will engage in progressive research whilst facilitating the development of strong bilateral research linkages between Australia and the rest of the world.

General Guidelines

World Scholars awards support the full cost of academic tuition fees for up to three (3) years on the terms set out in these Guidelines. The scholarship will also fund a travel contribution towards the cost of a return international airfare (as set out in the „Air Travel’ section of the Scholarship Conditions, below).

Applications are invited from international students who are citizens of the following countries (“Participating Countries”):

The University is actively negotiating with governments and agencies in Participating Countries to identify possibilities for further support for World Scholars. Eligibility Criteria

Scholarships are available for new international students enrolling in a PhD at the University of Sydney, who hold citizenship of a Participating Country, and who meet all academic and English-language proficiency criteria required for admission to a PhD. In order to be considered for a World Scholars award, applicants must:

be a citizen of a Participating Country;
not be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia, or have applied for Australian permanent residency;
meet all academic and English-language proficiency criteria for admission to their chosen PhD; and
have a Firm Offer of Admission to a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney commencing in Semester 1 2011, issued on or before 10 September 2010 (applicants with a Conditional Offer of Admission will not be considered).
Currently enrolled international students and other students of the University of Sydney are not eligible to apply for a World Scholars award. Please also note the further restrictions outlined in the “Scholarship Conditions” section of these Guidelines.

How to Apply

Applying for a World Scholars award is a two-stage process. Applicants must complete both stages, in order, as follows:

Stage 1: PhD application and admission

Candidates must lodge an application for a PhD degree, and obtain a Firm Offer of Admission, prior to lodging a World Scholars application.
Before lodging a PhD application, candidates are required to make contact with a potential academic supervisor and discuss their proposed research project. The average processing time for PhD applications, once received at the University of Sydney, is six weeks. Fulbright MBA Award, UK

Each year one award is offered to a UK citizen in support of the first year of an MBA programme, at any accredited US institution (except Harvard Business School). The recipient will work with the Fulbright Commission and the Institute of International Education (IIE) to find the right department for them.
Award Benefits
Grants are for up to £25,000 paid in instalments directly to the grantee, the first of which is typically given just prior to departure from the UK. This funding is intended as a contribution towards the first year of tuition fees and general maintenance costs whilst in the US. University application and entrance exam fees, limited sickness and accident benefit coverage, visa sponsorship and processing and participation in a number of Fulbright Scholar events are also included.
Selection Criteria
Minimum eligibility for this award category:

Bristol Business School Scholarships and Bursaries for Full-Time International Students

Sweden : Openings for Ph.D. Students at the Automatic Control Laboratory, KTH

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 13,300 full-year undergraduate students, 1,500 postgraduate students and 3,900 employees.
The School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education in the fields of electrical engineering, systems engineering, information and communications theory, space and fusion plasma physics, and electrical power engineering. 300 people work in this creative and dynamic environment, out of which half are Ph.D. students, many from other countries. Our research projects are carried out in close collaboration with industry partners as well as with research colleagues from Sweden and other countries. The school is responsible for educating civil engineers in electrical engineering and five masters programs which are in great demand and which have a close connection to our main fields.
The Automatic Control Lab at KTH conducts research in networked control systems, control of communication systems, systems biology and system identification. We perform fundamental research and engage in industrial projects with partners such as ABB, Scania, GM, Ericsson, and Honeywell. Much of the research is conducted within the Linnaeus Centre ACCESS, Sweden’s largest research effort in networked systems, and in EU-projects in collaboration with top universities in Europe and USA. We have a large international academic network and collaborate regularly with UC Berkeley, Caltech, ETH, and Stanford among others.
We are looking for Ph.D. students within the area of
Identification of Complex, Structured and Networked Systems:
It is increasingly common that engineering systems are built from components that are interconnected in complex networks. Examples are found in the vehicle and IT industry, in energy and material distribution, and in industrial process control. This project concerns development of systematic modeling techniques for large-scale complex networks. You will for example work with system identification and/or model reduction of complex networked systems. The models are to be used for control, fault detection, or system design.
We are also partner in the new EU project AUTOPROFIT (Advanced Autonomous Model-Based Operation of Industrial Process Systems) where the objective is to develop methodologies which decrease the modeling cost and provide efficient model maintenance in process control applications. The project has Eindhoven University, Delft Technical University, RWTH Aachen, and KTH as academic partners, and Boliden (Sweden), ABB (Sweden) and SASOL (South Africa) as industrial partners. Here we will develop a system identification framework for model predictive control.
We are looking for students with a solid interest in mathematical modeling, control theory, and optimization.
Qualifications of Candidates
We seek highly motivated individuals holding an MSc degree in electrical engineering, engineering physics, computer science or similar. The candidates should have excellent grades and very good skills in oral and written communication. They should be ready to contribute to a scientific research area of major importance for Swedish industry and society in general. The positions include up to twenty percent teaching at undergraduate level.

Luxembourg : Junior Assistant (PhD student) in Life Sciences

Using cell and molecular biology approaches, the objective of the team is to gain further insight into the pathophysiological events taking place during the onset and chronification of inflammatory reactions in the CNS during neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. In the injured CNS, astrocytes appear as a key component of reactive gliosis, which is a major impediment for regeneration. The reactive gliosis seems to reexpress some of the processes observed during the development. The Notch signalling pathway is a mechanism implicated in many of these developmental processes, one of them is the control of the astrocytes differentiation. The aim of this project is to understand the implication of the Notch pathway in the adult CNS, especially during diseases with inflammatory and neurodegenerative components.
