They will comprise different sample preparations, in order to vary the adhesion between the polymer film and the substrate, the application of various methods for the quantitative estimation of the adhesion, and the analysis of the mechanical properties of the polymer thin films via force-distance-curves, in order to determine quantitatively the influence of the adhesion. The scheduled experiments have important theoretical implications in the field of confined polymers. Moreover, this subject is also very relevant for possible applications in the field of adhesives and coatings.

Preference will be given to applicants (M.Sc./Diploma) in Physics, Chemistry or related fields. Experience with scanning probe microscopy, surface preparation and analysis, polymer physics and chemistry are advantageous.A basic knowledge of German language would be appreciated, English is required. [Malaysian] AMCHAM-MACEE 2009 Scholarship

American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) are pleased to announce the competition for the AMCHAM-MACEE 2009 Scholarship. AMCHAM created a scholarship endowment program in 1998 to benefit deserving Malaysian students seeking to pursue their undergraduate studies in the United States.

The AMCHAM-MACEE 2009 Scholarship annually awards a US$20,000 scholarship, covering four years of undergraduate study in the United States ($5000.00/year renewable for four years subject to meeting the specified conditions). The scholarship is open to qualified Malaysian students who are accepted to an accredited university in the United States for four years of study culminating in a Bachelors degree. IIT Madras offers Short Term Post Doctoral Fellowship for women with Ph.D with an objective of maintaining awareness and interest in high quality academic research in the engineering departments of Aerospace, Applied Mechanics, Biotechnology, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical, Engineering Design, Mechanical, Metallurgical & Materials and Ocean and in the departments of Chemistry, Humanities & Social Sciences, Management Studies, Mathematics and Physics.

Eligibility: Candidates should have a Ph.D in the appropriate discipline. There is no age limit prescribed.

Duration : The duration of the fellowship will vary from 2 to 6 months, consisting of 2 to 3 visits of duration not less than two months. After the first visit, the Department at its discretion may extend the fellowship to a maximum total duration of six months.

About the Programme

Establishment of the National Scholarship Programme for the Support of Mobility of Students, PhD students, University Teachers and Researchers was approved by the Government of the Slovak Republic in 2005. The National scholarship programme of the Slovak Republic is funded by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS, PhD STUDENTS, UNIVERSITY TEACHERS AND RESEARCHERS

The National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic is intended to support mobility of foreign students, PhD students, university teachers and researchers to stay at Slovak universities and research institutions.

Types of scholarships

Scholarships for foreign university students (enrolled at least in the 6th semester) to take part in Master study over a period of 1 to 2 semesters (from 5 to 10 months) at Slovak universities.

Scholarships for foreign PhD students to take a part of PhD study over a period of 1 to 12 months at Slovak universities or research institutes.

Scholarships for foreign university teachers and researchers over a period of 1 to 12 months to carry out teaching or research at Slovak universities, research institutes or nongovernmental organisations on the basis of an invitation.

foreign university teachers and researches who are already teaching or researching at Slovak universities and research institutes;

citizens of the Slovak Republic studying, teaching or researching at foreign universities or research institutes;

foreign applicants accepted for other scholarship programmes in Slovakia (for example Visegrad Fund, Erasmus, CEEPUS, bilateral agreements, etc.).

Scholarship designation

The scholarship is designated to cover living costs (accommodation, boarding, etc.) of a study, research and teaching stay of foreign applicants at Slovak universities and research institutions. The applicants can ask their host institution to assist them to arrange their accommodation and necessary documents regarding the stay in Slovakia, or they have to arrange it by themselves. The Scholarship Programme does not cover the travel costs to and from Slovakia.

Selection procedure of applicants from abroad

The selection committee, appointed by the Minister of Education of the SR, carries out the selection of scholarship holders.

The selected scholarship holders will receive “Letter of award” and “Letter of acceptance” of the scholarship by post. The “Letter of acceptance” should be signed and send back to SAIA, n. o.

re-Doctoral and Ph. D. Programme - 2009: Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institution within the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The research activity in the Institute centers around the areas of theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics, nuclear physics and high energy physics. The institute has a large number of experimental facilities such as the 3MV Pelletron accelerator (and associated beam lines for carrying out RBS/Channeling, PIXE, AMS, Implantation etc.), HRTEM, XPS, ARUPS, XRD, X-Ray Reflectometry & Standing Waves, micro-Raman, PL, FTIR, UV-VIS Spectrometer, SPM(in air) etc. In the 11 th plan period more experimental facilities directly related to the emerging area of Nanoscience and nanotechnology are expected to be added. The institute has been actively involved in international collaborations, notably among them are experiments in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at CERN and BNL.

One of the important objectives of the Institute has been to train and guide young scholars for research in physics. For this, the Institute has regular one year Pre-doctoral (post M.Sc.) course work and Doctoral research programmes for those who successfully complete the Pre-Doctoral course. The institute campus has hostels for the scholars.

The Predoctoral programme is designed to train fresh M.Sc. students for conducting research activities. It is aimed at imparting a broad based training in advanced physics and research methodology. The course work is planned with the view that it should help a student not only in doctoral research, but also enable him/her to become a good physics teacher irrespective of whether or not he/she takes up doctoral research. The Pre-doctoral course runs from August to June every year. The successful candidates are awarded certificates for “Post- M.Sc. Course in Advance Physics” which has been recognized by the Utkal University, Berhampur University, and Sambalpur University as equivalent to their M.Phil degree.

On completion of the Pre-doctoral programme, the students are eligible to join for research under the supervision of faculty members of the Institute, leading to the Ph.D. degree awarded by Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed-to-be university within the Department of Atomic Energy.

During the pre-doctoral and the first year of the Ph.D. programme, students are placed in Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) grade and are paid Rs. 12,000/- p.m. fellowship. On satisfactory performance after the first year of the Ph.D. programme, they are placed in Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) grade and paid Rs. 14,000/- p.m. fellowship. In addition there is a contingency grant to meet expenses on books and for domestic travel to attend conferences and workshops. The medical facilities are available on-par with the regular employees.

The Institute invites application for the Pre-doctoral Programme from Indian nationals having the following qualifications : –

M.Sc. Physics with minimum 55% marks (in aggregate).

GATE qualifiers with minimum score of 95 percentile having current validity or, CSIR / UGC- NET qualifiers (for research fellowship) within last one year

Candidates who have qualified JEST-2009 with a minimum score of 95 Percentile need not send any application. They will be contacted directly by the Institute. If a candidate has scored less than 95 percentile in JEST-2009 but satisfies any of the criteria for GATE/NET as above, he/she should also send the application.

Candidates appearing for the final semester/year of M.Sc., who have already qualified in GATE or CSIR/UGC-NET can also apply. They should submit the relevant proof before joining the pre-doctoral programme. [England] Penguin Scholarship for the MA Publishing course

London College of Communication's School of Printing and Publishing is delighted to announce that Penguin has chosen to provide its very first publishing scholarship to be awarded, via a competitive basis, to a student to study on the book and journal pathway on the MA in publishing course at the College.

The scholarship is for £3,000 and will be awarded for the academic year 2009-10.

[USA] Open PhD position in Geomatics/Photogrammetry at University of Florida

The Geomatics Program at the University of Florida is seeking a PhD student to work on feature-based photogrammetry in which the classical point-based photogrammetry is replaced by higher order geometric primitives such as lines and splines. Although the use of features was introduced to the photogrammetric community more than two decades ago, most of the existing algorithms such as relative orientation and triangulation are based on the use of point measurement. This PhD work will concentrate on developing robust algorithms for feature-based photogrammetry that will be applied to solve practical problems such as 3D building reconstruction. The position will be funded by University of Florida/Geomatics. The start date for this position is August-2009. In this position the tuition will be waived, the health insurance will be paid by the University, and this is in addition to an annual salary of $16,000 ($1333/month).

Required knowledge and skills

Suitable applicants should have a master’s degree or equivalent in Geomatics (particularly photogrammetry) or other related analytical discipline.

Experience in computer programming (C#, MATLAB), image processing and analytical techniques for data analysis such least-squares error modeling. Algorithms and software development will be central to the success of the research.

The applicant should have strong problem-solving and communication skills, including excellent English.

The PhD student will enter an approved program leading to the degree of PhD within a time frame of 3-4 years. It is a prerequisite, however, that the formal admission requirements for the PhD program are met before appointment can be made.

Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and must apply for federal financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
