M. Sc. Optics and Photonics

KSOP Masters Education. We believe that a Ph.D. graduate school is unlikely to be successful without the background / infrastructure and the “funneling / filtering” through a corresponding associated, interdisciplinary coordinated masters program, aiming at attracting excellent students from abroad.

36 students per year can be admitted to our masters program. The best students of the masters program are supported by the KSOP Scholarship Program. Access to the KSOP masters education is granted via an application procedure.

A study plan is developed for each individual masters student (corresponding to his/her educational background) when entering the KSOP.

The M.Sc. course is divided into four stages providing the students with the necessary prerequisites (Stage I: Introduction), to give them a solid background on the most important topics within the wide and diverse field of Optics and Photonics (Stage II: Core Subjects) and let them acquire specialized knowledge (Stage III: Specialization) to be able to competently perform a six-month research project on a current topic of research (masters thesis). In addition, an 8-weeks industrial internship is scheduled between stages 2 and 3.

Scholarship
The KSOP scholarship amounts to 800 Euro/month for international students and 400 Euro/month for German students. Part of the scholarship is a research assistantship. Within the scope of this assistantship, you will have the opportunity to work on a research project in one of the KSOP institutes.

The scholarship is first admitted for 12 months. At the end you have to proof your successful participation in the KSOP M.Sc. Program through very good study results in order to extend the scholarship for another 12 months.
Guideline for Scholarship Application

Step 1 - Fill out the KSOP scholarship application form
You can apply for a scholarship at the KSOP Office after having applied for the program M.Sc. in Optics & Photonics. Please fill out the KSOP Scholarship application form. The application deadline for the upcoming winter semester is July 15 each year.

Please note that you have to send your scholarship documents seperately from your application to the student office, the KSOP Office or the international student office respectively.

You will receive feedback from the KSOP Office on your scholarship application after July 15.

Step 2 - Submit your application
You are required to include the following documents in your application:

• KSOP scholarship application form
• a certified copy of your qualification for university entrance (e.g. Abitur, High School Diploma, Bac.)
• a certified copy of your Bachelor degree (if the Bachelor degree is not yet available at the closing date for applications but will be completed before the registration, candidates can apply with a preliminary transcript of records)
• your CV
• proof of English language profiency: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum of 570 pb, 260 points cb and 88 points ibt or IELTS (International English Languag Testing System) band with a minium of 6.5
• proof of extra-curricular activities
• one or better two recommendations

We are seeking for a highly-motivated PhD student to join an international research consortium working on child malnutrition in Africa. The main research aim of the consortium is to develop and evaluate lipid-based nutrition supplement (LNS) formulations for prevention of malnutrition.

The holder of the position will pursue his/her doctoral studies full-time focusing on the development of new methods to assess child health, nutritional status and subjective well being. A successful applicant should have a Master’s degree in one of the following (or related) fields: medicine, nutrition science, public health, or sociology. Previous experience in developing countries is highly appreciated. Fluent English skills are essential and willingness to spend extended periods of time in rural Africa is a requirement.

The position is available starting from September 2009, or as agreed. Funding in a form of a personal scholarship (1900 € / month, from which the recipient pays 11 - 14% as pension and occupational accident premiums) is available in 12-month periods, for a maximum of four years. In order to receive a stipend, the chosen person will have to register as a post-graduate student at the University of Tampere. Before the scholarship period, a maximum of four months salary is available for preparation and registration of a PhD research plan. Salary during that period will be determined by the salary system of Finnish universities based on demand level 1 of the chart for teaching and research personnel (1608 € / month +  0 - 48 % personal bonus) .

Description : The fellowship will support a student working on aggregation of colloidal particles in the presence of polyelectrolytes and multivalent ions. The project relies on light scattering and fits into the overall themes of the research group in the area of the physical and analytical chemistry of polyelectrolytes and interfaces. The research is primarily experimentally oriented and is complemented by other state-of-the-art experimental tools, including scattering techniques and surface sensitive tools. Prerequisites are masters or diploma preferentially in chemistry, but a degree in physics or engineering is equally welcome. Experience with light scattering and/or computer programming represent an advantage. Enthusiasm for top-quality research and teaching is as important as good oral and written communication skills. Stanford-India Biodesign Fellowship 2009

The goal of Stanford-India Biodesign is to train the next generation of medical technology innovators in India. This highly competitive program is directed towards Indian citizens who have an interest in the invention and early-stage development of new medical technologies. Successful applicants will have advanced degrees and/or significant work experience. University faculty are strongly encouraged to apply.

Funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, Stanford University, and other supporters, the SIB Fellowship Program is centered in New Delhi and administered as a collaboration between Stanford University, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in partnership with the Indo-US Science & Technology Forum (IUSSTF). In future years, the fellowship and associated teaching programs will be developed in other centers in India.
Fellows receive tuition, stipend, and international travel support (for trips required for the fellowship.) During the fellowship, approximately half of the fellows’ time is spent in India, and the other half at Stanford University. Fellows work on a multidisciplinary team joining other innovators with a combination of engineering, medical and business backgrounds.

The team examines clinical needs within the Indian setting, identifying opportunities for medical technology innovation. Working closely with Stanford, AIIMS and IIT Delhi faculty, the teams invent, prototype, develop and patent one or more new technologies. Fellows are also mentored by “real-world” experts from the medical technology, legal and venture capital industries in the United States and India.

FULL MTEC SCHOLARSHIP

The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appointed the University of Twente as the university where students from Central and Eastern Europe will complete a Master’s Degree in Public Administration at next to no charge.

The Dutch government will be refunding the costs as part of the MATRA Training for European Cooperation (MTEC) programme. This programme has been devised to support the transition from totalitarianism to multiform democracies in Central and Eastern Europe. In addition to attending the master’s programme, students will take part in a social programme – which includes an introduction to the Netherlands – and will follow a personal development programme. Enrollment is open until 1 July 2009.

What does an MTEC Scholarship consist of?

An MTEC scholarship covers tuition fee, study materials, housing, subsistence, insurance, visa costs, travel to and from the home country, a personal development programme (including effective leadership, change management, project planning) and a social programme (Introduction programme, excursions, and access to the unique campus facilities of the University of Twente).

Who may apply for an MTEC scholarship?

Besides applicants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the MTEC scholarships are meant for students and residents from Albania, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Morocco, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine. These students should have completed their Bachelor of Science (BSc) with flying colours and should satisfy the criteria for admission to the Master of Science (MSc) Public Administration, University of Twente. Applicants should both be nationals of one of the participating countries and be resident in one of these countries. A selection procedure is part of the intake.

Preconditions

Prospective students need to have completed a bachelor degree in Public Administration or strongly related social sciences, live in the relevant states at the time of application, have an IELTS subscore of 6.0 minimum on all four aspects of the IELTS test, and may not be older than 35 years. Professionals are required to acquire permission of their employer to study a year abroad and be issued with a guarantee that they can take up their position upon return.

The MSc programme Public Administration

The Public Administration (PA) Master’s degree programme, duration one year, highlights public administration and informed approaches (i.e. rooted in policy) to social issues. As a public administrator, you will be expected to understand the complex administrative relations in networks of public and private organizations and their impact on the quality of administration and policymaking. In addition, you must be able to systematically analyze the implications for various values and interests involved and the tension arising between such concerns as decisiveness and democracy. To effectively evaluate problems and design appropriate solutions, you must have the ability to assess existing knowledge at face value and generate new, relevant knowledge. Moreover, you will be able to use that knowledge as a basis for effective recommendations and their introduction/implementation.

PhD Position in Ecology, Sweden, 2009

PhD position in Ecology: The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science has about 160 members including 55 PhD researchers and 55 PhD students (for more information see the department’s homepage:www.emg.umu.se/forskning/index_eng.html).

A new project financed by the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (FORMAS) in aquatic ecology, entitled: “Eutrophication as a selection factor for the occurrence of predation-resistant and potentially pathogenic bacteria in aquatic environments”.

Project description
Eutrophication is one of the largest threats to aquatic environments, as it causes a number of drastic changes in the system. One example is phytoplankton communities that often become dominated by inedible, filamentous or toxic forms. The underlying mechanism for this may be increased predation on lower trophic levels, selecting for increased occurrence of predation-resistance in nutrient rich environments.
Evolution has taken many solutions for bacterial resistance to protozoan predation. Some examples are increase or decrease in cell size, production of toxins, cell aggregations, biofilm formation, and resistance to degradation within the protozoa. Some predation-resistant bacteria are also resistant to phagocytosis by human macrophages, suggesting that protozoa constitute a biological gym for the occurrence of potentially pathogenic bacteria.

The above theories will be tested within the PhD project. The link between ecosystem drivers, bacterial functional diversity and epidemiological factors will be investigated in aquatic systems. The PhD project will include field experiments as well as selection and microcosm experiments in laboratory. The tularemia-bacterium Francisella tularensis will be used as an example for a predation-resistant and potentially pathogenic bacterium. The project is performed in collaboration with ecologists, microbiologists and medical scientists.

Assoc. Prof. Agneta Andersson, Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Umeå University will be main supervisor in the project. Prof. Anders Sjöstedt, Department of Clinical Bacteriology, Umeå University, and Assoc. Prof. Mats Forsman, Swedish Defence Research Agency will be associated supervisors.

Requirements
The recruitment procedure will follow
the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen chapters 5 and 7). Prerequisites include either i) 240 ECTS credits (Swe. högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (Swe. poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007 or equivalent competence. Education should include 120 ECTS credits (2 year) biological subjects, 15 ECTS credits ecology or corresponding subject, and a 30 ECTS credits independent project in ecology or a similar relevant field. It is qualifying to have good knowledge in ecological theory and training in microbial ecology and molecular biology/genetics. The successful applicant should have good ability to write and speak in English, creativity, power of initiative, independence and ability to collaborate. Evaluations will be based on results on University courses, quality of master’s thesis, references, interviews and the letter of intent.

A PhD education is 4 years (48 months) and the PhD-student will get a formal position at the start of the project (Sw: “doktorandanställning”). Up to 10 % as teaching assistant may be included in the position (then the position will be extended accordingly).
