About Vanier:
Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships are administered by Canada’s three federal granting agencies [Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)]. Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship nominees will be evaluated by agency-specific multi-disciplinary peer review committees that will forward selected nominations to an independent inter-agency selection board. This board will select the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship recipients.

Detail:
The Vanier CGS program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health. Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS. In an effort to support students in broadening their research horizons and seeking new challenges, the Vanier CGS program strongly encourages candidates to pursue their studies beyond the university that granted their undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Eligibility: Eligibility for Nomination
To be considered for a Vanier CGS, you must:
a. be nominated by only one Canadian university, which must have received a Vanier CGS allocation;
b. be seeking financial support to pursue your first doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD);
c. intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) studies and research at the nominating university;
d. have completed no more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2011 (see Notes below);
e. have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent; and
f. not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR to undertake or complete a doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).
Notes:
All prior doctoral-level studies, regardless of discipline, will be considered in the evaluation of eligibility. The granting agencies will count two months of part-time study as one month of full-time study. In the case of students who are registered in a combined MA/PhD program or a direct-entry doctoral program, or who are accelerated from a master’s program into a doctoral program without obtaining the master’s degree, the agencies will not include the first 12 months of graduate study in the evaluation of eligibility.
Combined MD/PhD degrees (CIHR only)
All months of doctoral-level study within the combined degree program will be considered in the evaluation of eligibility.
Eligibility to Hold an Award
Without exception, Vanier CGS awards are tenable only at the eligible Canadian university that submitted the nomination. To hold the award, the candidate must:
1. be registered as a full-time student at the nominating Canadian institution, and be pursuing a doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD); and
2. remain enrolled and demonstrate continued satisfactory progress in doctoral program.
Part-time studies:
A Vanier CGS may be held by students who are registered part time because of a disability. For this purpose, disability is defined as “a functional limitation resulting from a physical, sensory, or mental impairment, which, for an indefinite period, affects the ability of the student to perform the activities necessary to participate fully in his or her learning.” For eligible part-time students, Vanier CGS award funding will be equivalent to a full-time award spread over a longer period of time.

Selection Criteria
Nominees will be evaluated and selected based on the following three criteria, which will be weighted equally by the peer review committees. However, the final Selection Board recommendation on awardees will be based solely on the leadership component (referee letters, leadership reference letter, university nomination letter, candidate’s self-assessment of leadership potential and ability) of the nomination documents.
Peer review selection criteria:
1. Academic excellence, as demonstrated by past academic results and by transcripts, awards and distinctions.
2. Research potential, as demonstrated by the candidate’s research history, his/her interest in discovery, the proposed research and its potential contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field, the potential benefit to Canadians, and any anticipated outcomes.
3. Leadership (potential and demonstrated ability), as defined by the following qualities:
Personal achievement:
1. professional involvement in dance, arts, music, etc.;
2. significant artistic achievement;
3. recognized athletic achievement, especially in a leadership role;
4. entrepreneurial achievement (startup company); and/or
5. foreign travel and study.
Involvement in academic life:
1. mentoring/teaching;
2. supervisory experience;
3. involvement in student government and in the university community, including committees, teams, senate, boards, ethics committees, etc.;
4. project management;
5. roles in professional societies; and/or
6. organization of conferences and meetings.
Volunteerism/community outreach:
1. community involvement in charity or not-for-profit organizations.
Civic engagement:
1. parliamentary page positions and internships;
2. political activity; and/or
3. elected positions.

Value and Duration: A Vanier CGS is valued at $50,000 per year for three years. Award recipients must take up their award in the first semester (May or September) following the announcement of results if they:
1. have already undertaken their doctoral program of study at the Canadian nominating university; or
2. have already undertaken a doctoral program of study at a Canadian university and will be transferring to a doctoral program at the Canadian nominating university.
Award recipients can take their award up in May, September or January following the announcement of results if they:
1. have not yet started a doctoral program of study; or
2. will transfer from a doctoral program at an international university to a doctoral program at the Canadian nominating university.

This scholarship is offered to PhD candidates in order to nurture and support the research culture of the Interdisciplinary Unit.

Eligibility:
Fees scholarships will be awarded on the basis of:
(i)official confirmation of enrolment

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in unique interdisciplinary research involving statistical physics and mythology, leading to a PhD degree. The work is fully funded by a prestigious Leverhulme research grant. The research will involve analysing the structure of various mythologies from a mathematical/physical/statistical point of view. Network theory is a recently emergent and popular branch of statistical mechanics and graph theory with very broad applicability. It is an exceptionally useful mathematical tool to describe all sorts of real-world networks. This theory has been applied to the study of particle physics, polymers, economics, transport, computer science, sociology, epidemiology, linguistics and more. In this research the theory will be used to study networks of characters appearing in different mythologies. The historicity of many mythological characters is disputed and in the absence of firm archaeological evidence for their existence or otherwise, we turn to mathematics/statistics. We use network theory to analyse the relationships between characters appearing in a variety of world mythologies, starting with Celtic mythology as this is amongst the most extensive. The research will take place at Coventry University’s small but growing statistical physics group, within the Applied Mathematics Research Centre. The study may involve trips to collaborating institutions in Europe. It will involve significant literature research as well as training in complexity science in general and network theory in particular.

Eligibility:
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable numerate background (preferably a good degree in physics, applied mathematics, statistics or computing) and be highly motivated to work in mythology. Previous amateur interests in mythology are desirable and familiarity with Celtic mythology would be an advantage.

The group of Prof. L.M. Woods is looking for PhD graduate students interested in pursuing their degree in theoretical condensed matter and/or materials physics. Our group is involved in a variety of interdisciplinary problems exploring the interplay between electronic structure, optical, and thermoelectric properties in complex materials and related devices.

About FDFA:
The Federal Department for Foreign Affairs (FDFA) formulates and coordinates Swiss foreign policy on the instructions of the Federal Council. A coherent foreign policy is a precondition for the effective protection of Swiss interests vis-à-vis foreign countries.

Detail:
The university scholarships are intended for post-graduate students only, with as special emphasis put on Research Fellowships. Applicants who already hold a Master degree and wish to undertake a second (or 3rd) Master degree are not considered a priority for the Swiss Government Scholarships. Multiplying the Master degrees will not be encouraged by the Federal Commission for Scholarship (FCS). Besides, please be aware that for Master programs, the FCS does not pay for Master tuition fees.

Eligibility:
1. Candidates should not be older than 35 years (i.e. born after 1 January 1976).
2. Before applying, you must find out whether your planned study program or research project can be carried out at the university concerned. Therefore, you will have to contact the Professor or the Administrator responsible for the postgraduate course. You will have to submit copies of your diploma with grades, a detailed study plan (see guidelines for details) and a curriculum vitae. Should this contact not be made, the Swiss Embassy will reject the candidature.
3. In order to study in Switzerland the students must have a good knowledge of French, German or Italian, as classes will mostly be given in one of these languages. For research scholarships, the language is often English, more specifically in Sciences.

Application Deadline: Each application form and all the annexed documents required have to be sent in triplicate in the given order (see Application Guidelines on Downloads). The complete application files should be submitted to the Embassy not later than 29 October 2010.

Application Procedure:
It is essential that you fill in the application forms electronically and print them out to attach to your file. Forms filled in by hand will not be accepted. All documents which are not in English, German or French must be accompanied by certified translations in one of these 3 languages.

Important: The FCS has issued new APPLICATION GUIDELINES (see Downloads). These guidelines outline all the important information and requirements to prepare a good application.

Applications will not be taken into consideration if they are in one of the following situations:
* The application is incomplete, does not respect the guidelines or is badly prepared;
* The applicant is older than 35 (born prior to 1.1.1976);

Policy of ASAI Scholarship Loan:
1. Financial Aid is given for one degree only; either the Master Degree or the PhD Degree but not both.
2. For the PhD applicants Financial Aid is given for three academic years if needed, and for Master applicants for two academic years if needed.
3. Only one applicant from the same family is accepted.
4. Amount of Loan is determined based on: number of applicants, level of living in country of study, field of specialization, and our allocation budget restrictions.
5. Repayment of loans must be secured through (2 guarantors) and must be paid within 3 years through an installments plan or at one time.

About Centre:
The World Agroforestry Centre (also known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry or ICRAF) is an independent research institution which generates science-based knowledge about the complex role trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods. As part of the Centre’s work to bring tree-based solutions to bear on poverty and environmental problems, researchers – working in close collaboration with partners – are developing new technologies, tools and policy recommendations for increased food security and ecosystem health. The Centre’s headquarters are located in Nairobi, Kenya, and research is conducted in 23 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. We are supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and receive funding from over 50 different donors.

Detail:
The post doc will participate in the multi-centre Global Futures project which is coordinated by IFPRI. The post doc will work closely with post docs at ILRI and CIMMYT who will also be based in Nairobi. The ICRAF post doc will focus on enhancing modelling capability and empirical data to be able to assess the likely economic impacts of agroforestry and other natural resource management interventions. The role includes the following responsibilities:
* Develop methods for improving CGIAR modelling capability in agroforestry and other natural resource management intervention areas. This may involve the direct enhancement of global models like IMPACT or the enhancement of other models that could be linked up (e.g. DSSAT).
* Build up relevant global databases with which to undertake ex ante impact assessments for agroforestry and natural resource management interventions.
* Collaborate with other ICRAF staff to identify priority ex ante impact assessments and to identify key model parameters, such as likely adoption trajectories and productivity, equity, income, and environmental service impacts.
* Support increased use of ex ante impact assessment tools within ICRAF.
* As with all scientists, generate and disseminate scientific publications

Requirements:
* PHD in natural resources or environmental, agricultural, or development economics preferred
* Work experience in modeling is an added an advantage
* Experience in modelling of large scale or multi-country economic or natural resource management systems.
* Use of GAMS programming and familiarity with important models used in the Global Futures project – IMPACT, DREAM, DSSAT
* Excellent data management skills and attention to detail
* Good communication skills – writing, speaking, listening, discussing
* Ability to work in a developing country and in a multicultural environment.
* Proficiency in multiple languages is desirable, fluency in English is necessary

About NWO:
The NWO Organization comprises several units. Eight Divisions for Sciences develop new research programmes, assess subsidy requests and monitor projects that NWO finances. This also applies to the NWO Foundation WOTRO, though its focus lies with research in aid of developing countries. For the use of large scale research facilities NWO often operates as an intermediary. In 1990 the Netherlands National Computing Facilities Foundation, a.k.a. NCF, was founded to mediate for computing power. To meet new trends in science and society, NWO has also set up various Temporary Task Forces. These task forces are aimed at speeding up the development of promising technologies. Furthermore, NWO encompasses nine Research Institutes with years of research expertise and hightech large scale instruments for research into earth’s oceans, outer space, man, society, nature, technology, the smallest building blocks, and the bedrock principles of science.

Detail:
The aim of the Rubicon programme is to encourage talented researchers at Dutch universities and research institutes run by KNAW and NWO to dedicate themselves to a career in postdoctoral research. Rubicon offers researchers who have completed their doctorates in the past year the chance to gain experience at a top research institution outside the Netherlands (maximum of two years). The Rubicon programme also offers talented researchers from abroad the opportunity to obtain grants to spend a maximum of two years in the Netherlands to conduct research.

Eligibility:
1. Postgraduates who are currently engaged in doctoral research or who have been awarded a doctorate in the twelve months preceding the relevant deadline. Applicants who are still engaged in doctoral research may only apply if their supervisor provides a written declaration approving their thesis.
2. Women especially are urged to apply.
3. Researchers from abroad may apply

Application Procedure:
A period of up to two years at an institution outside the Netherlands or at a Dutch institution. The minimum duration is twelve months. Standard awards have been set both for periods spent abroad and for periods spent in the Netherlands.

Extra Information:
In order to promote mobility among researchers, applications will be admissible only if the candidate is to conduct the research at an institution other than the one where he or she graduated or that awarded his or her doctorate. The research must also be conducted in a country other than the one where the applicant graduated or obtained the doctorate, unless that country is the Netherlands. It is not allowed to combine research at different institutes. Depending on the nature of the project, applicants may conduct field research. Candidates may apply for a Rubicon grant only once. An application will be deemed to have been made if the application has been accepted for consideration by NWO. Past recipients of Talent grants will not be eligible for consideration under the Rubicon programme. Applications must be submitted by individual researchers and not by pairs or teams of researchers. Application must be submitted via NWO’s electronic submission system Iris.

Deadline: Closing date for submitting applications is 1 September 2010. There are three selection rounds a year for Rubicon grants.

Selection Criteria:
Proposals will be assessed on the basis of quality criteria (as listed in the brochure which can be downloaded from this website) and certain policy criteria.

Procedure:
* Multidisciplinary advisory committees will assess the applications.
* The views of external referees will not be sought.
* The final award decisions will be made by the boards of the relevant divisions/foundation.
* The entire assessment procedure will take approximately 4 months.

Committees:
Three multidisciplinary advisory committees will be appointed by NWO:
* the Social Sciences (MaGW) and Humanities (GW) divisions will appoint a single advisory committee for the alpha and gamma cluster;
* the Earth and Life Sciences (ALW) and Medical Sciences (ZonMw) divisions will appoint a single advisory committee for the life sciences cluster;
* and the Physical Sciences (EW), Chemical Sciences (CW) and Physics (N) divisions and the Technology Foundation (STW) will appoint a single advisory committee for the beta cluster.
