School of Chemistry funded PhD Studentships
The School of Chemistry is offering a number of funded PhD studentships which will commence in the 2010/2011 academic year. These studentships will be 4 years in duration and will carry a stipend of €16,000 p.a. together with EU academic fees. Students will automatically be enrolled in the Dublin Chemistry Graduate Programme and will be required to act as demonstrators in undergraduate laboratories within the School of Chemistry as part of their duties. The research projects that are offered are listed here, together with the names of the relevant supervisor(s). Intending applicants are advised to consult with at least one potential supervisor in the School before proceeding to making a formal application for admission to the TCD Research Register. All applications for admission must be submitted through the PAC system.

A postdoctoral position is available immediately at Bilkent University, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, to develop proteomic based methods for the early detection of colorectal, gastric, ovarian and lung cancer.

Applicants should have a PhD degree and extensive experience with difficult to express proteins, ELISA-based assay development, mass spectrometry, bioinformatics and statistical analysis. Excellent

Qualifications required
The scholarships are open to both Danish and international applicants. Normally, we will expect applicants to have obtained an MSc degree in Chemistry but it is also possible to enrol candidates at the 4+4 scheme with a 3-year BSc degree and 1 MSc year behind them. However this will involve additional years of study, a midway qualification exam, and lower wages for the first two years.

An assessment committee to evaluate the applications will be appointed. Each applicant will be notified of the composition of the committee and will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns her/him. The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the final selection of successful candidates will be made by the Head of the Department, based on the recommendations made by the evaluation committee.

Successful candidates will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science, University of Copenhagen and to start their enrolment not later than 30 September 2010.

Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 300.174 per year (April 2010 level) plus pension contribution and the possibility to negotiate wage.

The BioInterfaces International Graduate School (BIF-IGS) provides the recruitment and training platform for the BioInterfaces Research Progamme at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany.

The BioInterfaces Programme brings together biologists, chemists, physicists, IT specialists, engineers, and material scientists with the common goal of controlling living systems, and bridges the gap between fundamental research and development of application-oriented technologies and products. The programme is tightly linked with the Universities of Karlsruhe and Heidelberg. In addition to offering the right of graduation, both Universities contribute scientifically to the BioInterfaces research school. PhD- fellowship in Epidemiology

PhD- fellowship in Epidemiology is available at the National Veterinary Institute in Oslo, Norway (www.vetinst.no) in cooperation with Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) at the University of Oslo (www.cees.uio.no).

The fellowship is for 3 years and is part of the project SAPRO (Sustainable Approaches to Reduce Oomycete (Saprolegnia) Infections in Aquaculture, http://ping.fm/wrhFq). SAPRO is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network that has been funded by the European Commission (EC) under Framework Program 7. Applicants must meet EC eligibility criteria and can not have lived in Norway for more than 12 months the past 3 years.

The oomycete fish pathogen Saprolegnia parasitica is a major problem in the aquaculture and SAPRO is therefore integrated into the research activities of European leaders of complementary disciplines, with a research focus on developing novel and sustainable measures to control Saprolegniosis and support the aquaculture industry in Europe.

The SAPRO network involves eight partners based in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and UK.

The overall aim of this part of the project is to improve disease management and control (biosecurity) in fish farms and hatcheries. This will be approached through risk factor studies in farms as well as investigation of the dynamics of the agent in fresh water systems and its interaction with the farming environment.

A successful candidate should hold a master in fish biology or equivalent and have interest for designing and performing own studies in hatcheries and fish farms but also in the interacting water recipients and supplies. The candidate should preferable have good knowledge in statistics and/or epidemiology. We seek a highly motivated and enthusiastic person with the ambition to become an independent scientist through the doctoral training. The candidate should be willing to do part of the training at one of the partner’s institutions.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo. A good command of English is required for all students attending the University of Oslo.

Starting date is no later than 1st November, 2010.

Annual salary will at least be approximately 46.500 euro/year.

The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time fixed-term appointment as PhD Research Fellow in ICT/mobile communications for a period of three years, at the Faculty of Engineering and Science. The purpose of the PhD position is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral degree. The position is currently located in Grimstad, Norway. The starting date is negotiable.

The position is intended to address issues related to future wireless communication systems, vehicle-to-vehicle communications and mobile Internet. Potential research topics for the PhD study include one or several of the following topics:

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems;
Modelling, analysis, and simulation of vehicle-to-vehicle channels;
Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) and mobile ad hoc network (MANET);
Wireless Internet in cars;
Car navigation systems.
Emphasis will be given to the applicant’s qualifications in the following fields:

Solid knowledge of mathematics, especially of stochastic processes, matrix analysis, linear algebra and signal theory;
Practical experience in programming;
Experience in using mathematical and numerical tools such as MATLAB;
Solid knowledge of mobile radio communications.
The successful applicant will have a master’s degree in a relevant field and must be enthusiastic and greatly interested in basic and experimental research.

The appointee must have the ability to work in a goal-oriented, organised, focused and independent manner. During the assessment process, emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s examination results as well as any previous research and development work. Relevant practical experience, personal suitability and good teamwork skills will also be emphasised.

The Research Fellow must be admitted to the PhD programme in ICT within three months of appointment. The PhD Research Fellow is expected to complete a doctoral dissertation within the period of employment.

The following admission requirements apply for the PhD programme:

The average grade for courses included in the bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) should be C or higher.
The average grade for courses included in the master’s degree (or equivalent) should be B or higher.
The master’s thesis (or equivalent) should have the grade B or higher.
A high level of oral and written proficiency in English is required. Applicants from some, but not all, countries must document their English skills through one of the following tests with the stated results or better:

TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language with the minimum score of 550 on the Paper-based Test (PBT), or 80 on the Internet based Test (iBT).

IELTS – International English Language Testing System, with the result of 6.0.

Research in the COLE laboratory focuses on the clinically important human MRP-related transporters that mediate ATP-dependent efflux of drugs and other organic anions, including several important signalling molecules. Ongoing projects include investigations of (i) the complex role of glutathione as a MRP1 substrate and modulator [Rothnie et al. 2008 Mol Pharmacol 74:1630]; (ii) structure/function relationships of MRP1 and ABCC4/MRP4 [Conseil et al. 2009 Mol Pharmacol 75:397; Maeno et al. 2009 Drug Metab Disp 37:1411]; and (iii) protein binding partners of MRP1 and ABCC4 [Hoque & Cole 2008 Cancer Res 68:4802]. Canon Foundation for Scientific Research (CFSR) sponsors scientists primarily in the scientific and engineering disciplines in developing countries.
