Applicants are invited for a full-time PhD scholarship at the Software Engineering Group at the Department of Computing, City University London to conduct research in the area of Software Architectures and Formal Analysis of Systems. The studentship is funded by the EU research project IoT@Work (FP7-257367).

The studentship is available to both UK/EU and overseas fee-paying students and is only open for applicants who will be studying full-time. The studentship, starting 1 June 2010, includes a bursary of £ 14000 per annum (in addition to a full tuition fee waiver) for three years.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in Computing (or in a numerate subject with substantial component in computing) or equivalent related professional experience, and a master’s in Computer Science.

Candidates should have:

research excellence or demonstrable potential (please provide copies of published/submitted papers, if any);
to be able to work as a member of a research team;
strong technical skills and programming experience in Java;
excellent communication and reporting skills; and
evidence of proficiency in English (see Entry requirements – usually also a hard requirement for obtaining a student visa, if one is needed).

Eric Bleumink Fund for Development Cooperation: University of Groningen Master and PhD Scholarships

The University of Groningen was awarded both the Diploma Supplement label and the ECTS label as the first and only higher education institution in the Netherlands. The labels are a ‘certification’ awarded by the European Commission to those institutions that have properly implemented these two aspects of the Bologna agenda.
The introduction of the Bologna system in higher education in Europe comprises various aspects. Issuing a Diploma Supplement and properly applying the ECTS system, including the relevant documents, are services offered to the student, plus they make an international comparison of education systems and certificates possible.
The grant is usually awarded for a maximum of 2 years for a Master’s degree programme, and a maximum of 4 years for a PhD. For PhD, part of the research should be conducted in the home country and part in Groningen .
The grant covers the tuition fees plus the costs of international travel, subsistence, books, and health insurance. It covers expenses incurred in travelling to and from the Netherlands for PhD candidates for a maximum of 4 times. For specific information, please check the rules & regulations [PDF].
Eligible candidates
In all cases candidates who are employed and supported by an institute or university in a developing country that has signed a co-operation agreement with the University of Groningen and who receive an income from that institution will be given preferential treatment. Candidates should: be nationals of and have their permanent residence in one of the country’s listed, have a good command of the English language, be in good health so health insurance in the Netherlands can be arranged, be available for the whole period of the fellowship and be able to take part in the entire study programme, have no other means of financing the study in question.

PhD Position in Carbohydrate Microarrays at the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, University of Copenhagen

The Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology wishes to appoint a PhD candidate in the area of carbohydrate microarrays. The position will start on July 1, 2010 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and will run for 3 years.

Job description
With reference to the project manager, the work of the PhD student will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development within the area of carbohydrate microarrys as applied to plant cell wall glycans and the screening of carbohydrate active enzymes and molecular probes. This project will place particular emphasis on dietary glycans, such as plant fibres and is part of the LeanGreenFood EU-funded network (http://ping.fm/TlCu4).

The PhD project will focus on the development of microarrays of well defined oligosaccharides, some of which will be produced using chemical synthesis by other partners within the network. This project will extend our recent research in this area (1,2,3) and specialized array platforms will be developed for mapping glycan populations in biological systems and for enzyme and ligand screening.

Note: EU rules concerning hiring of PhD candidates for Initial Training Networks dictate that researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. International Scholarships in Art at K?lerhaus Schlo?Balmoral, Germany

The preconditions for all scholarships with the exception of the curator scholarship are a completed course of study in art (M.F.A.) and one to three years (depending on the respective scholarship) of continuous artistic work after the conclusion of the studies. Applications are also possible for autodidacts distinguished by special artistic achievements, as documented by exhibitions and prizes.

I. International Residence Scholarships

Six residence scholarships will be awarded to international visual artists. Each scholarship lasts 6 months. All of them begin in April 2011 and are endowed with 1,200 euros per month and include free accommodation at the Künstlerhaus Schloß Balmoral.

Eligible to apply for the international residence scholarships at the Künstlerhaus Schloß Balmoral are international artists of any age from the disciplines painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, printmaking, design, photography, video, new media and landscape art.

II. Project Scholarship

The project scholarship, which is not tied to any site, will be awarded to a visual artist. The project scholarship lasts for 6 months and begins in April 2011. It is endowed with 1,200 euros per month.

Eligible are international applicants with permanent residence in the Federal Republic of Germany. The artistic project should be realized within the scholarship period of 6 months so that it can be shown at the annual exhibition of the scholarship holders in Bad Ems, Germany.

III. International Curator Scholarship

To foster dialog between research and art, Balmoral awards a residence scholarship to a young scholar in the humanities (preferably art history) for a curatorial project to be developed by the scholarship holder and the Künstlerhaus Schloß Balmoral.

The scholarship lasts 6 months and begins in April 2011. It is endowed with 1,200 euros per month and includes free accommodation at the Künstlerhaus Schloß Balmoral.

IV. Foreign and Exchange Scholarships

The following scholarships are offered exclusively for artists who were born in, studied in, or live in Rhineland-Palatinate:

UNESCO-Poland Fellowships Program 2010 in Engineering

With a view to promoting human resource capacities in the least developed countries (LDCs) and to enhancing international understanding and friendship among nations and the people of Poland, the Polish National Commission for UNESCO and the AGH International Promotion Centre for Technology and Engineering Education (AGH IPCTEE) under the auspice of UNESCO & AGH University of Science and Technology (Krakow), are placing at the disposal of UNESCO fifteen (15) fellowships of a six months duration starting on 1 October 2010 for the benefit of Member States listed in Annex I of the announcement letter. Beneficiaries of these fellowships will be given the opportunity to undertake an individual research programme in the field of Science and Technology.

Details regarding the fellowships offered and the criteria of selection are listed below. The Polish authorities will make the final decision.

A. FIELD OF RESEARCH

B. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Please see Annex III of the announcement letter for a detailed explanation of requirements for each programme (as they vary from one another).

C. FACILITIES OFFERED BY THE POLISH AUTHORITIES

(i) Free tuition;
(ii) Monthly allowance of 1350 PLN zlotys (approximatively US$ 450) corresponding to the salary of a local junior research fellow. Thus, all living expenses in Poland are to be borne by the fellows with this allowance; and;
(iii) An installation allowance of 1350 PLN zlotys to be paid upon arrival.
No provision to finance or lodge family members is made.

At the end of the research studies, the beneficiaries will receive a certificate attesting to their attendance at the host institution.

D. FACILITIES OFFERED BY UNESCO

(i) International travel expenses: (at the most economical rate) from the beneficiary’s country to Poland and return will be covered by UNESCO under its Regular Programme Budget.

(ii) Health insurance for fellowship beneficiaries who are declared medically fit: UNESCO fellowship holders may be covered by a special accident/ health insurance policy, taken out by the Organization for the duration of the fellowship. The costs of the health insurance is subscribed to and covered by UNESCO* on behalf of the fellows.

* ONLY THE TWO SELECTED CANDIDATES WILL BE REQUIRED TO SEND TO THE FELLOWHIPS DEPARTMENT PROGRAMME SECTION A COMPLETE MEDICAL DOSSIER, THE PRESCRIBED FORM OF WHICH WILL BE SENT ALONG WITH THE LETTER OF AWARD.

E. VISA

Selected fellows from countries where there are Polish Embassies or Consulates will have to obtain their entry visa in the country prior to their departure. Fellows from countries where no such Embassy/ Consulate exists must secure their visa through the nearest Embassy of Poland.

UNESCO/POLAND provide no allowance to defray passport and visa expenses and the selected beneficiaries will have to secure themselves their own visa.

F. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION FILES

One candidature per invited Member State. Original applications in duplicate must be channelled through the National Commission for UNESCO of the candidate’s country and reach Mr. Ali Zaid, Chief, Participation Programme and Fellowships Section, by 15 June 2010 at the latest. PhD Position: Energy From Streaming Potential Using Nanotechnology, University of Twente

In this project you will develop devices for the generation of molecular hydrogen and electrical energy from streaming water using the streaming potential. By coupling the generation of electricity to the generation of hydrogen in one process, we aim to increase efficiency as well as provide energy in an alternative storable form.

In your Ph.D. project you will be using nanochannels and nanoporous membranes. It will specifically be your task to optimize the pore wall surface to obtain maximal mechanical-to-electrical conversion efficiencies. You will have to identify the optimal wall material and investigate the influence of different chemical functionalizations. For example, there have been reports that the generation efficiency will strongly increase when the liquid slips past the walls, because this decreases the hydrodynamic resistance. Part of your work will therefore be to chemically functionalize the channel walls to introduce liquid slip. At the same time energy generation will increase with pore surface charge density, which is also influenced by the surface functionalization. Influencing the surface charge density will therefore be another goal.

In your research it will be important to develop a good theoretical insight in the different processes that influence the streaming potential, because this will guide your research. Possibly you will therefore be using simulation programs like Comsol Multiphysics to model your system. You will be part of a team with another Ph.D. student and a technician.

Requirements

The candidate should have a background in chemistry, preferably physical and colloid chemistry, or physical sciences. Experience in microfabrication technology will be appreciated as well as affinity with theoretical modelling. A good knowledge of scientific English is required for everyday communication in the group and writing of well-structured reports in that language.

What we offer

We offer you a PhD position for 4 years. Your starting salary will be € 2042, – gross per month in the first year and up to € 2612, – gross per month in the last year.
