PhD Positions for Muslim Societies 2010, Netherlands

In the coming six years (2010-2015) ISIS has made available special funds to build an integrated interdisciplinary thematic profile area which focuses on lslam and Muslim societies. One of the main aims is to integrate and mobilize the knowledge and expertise in the field.

The Ph.D. candidates will be appointed at the participating university with which the supervisor is affiliated.

The positions are 1,0 fte for 4 years (or 0,8 for 5 years).

The Ph.D. candidates will be appointed initially for eighteen months at the in ISIS participating university with which the promotor is affiliated. At satisfactory performance during that period, the appointment will be renewed for another two and a half years. Remuneration will be

€ 2,042 gross per calendar month in the first year, increasing to a maximum of
€ 2,612 gross per calendar month in the fourth year is in accordance with current pay scales as indicated in the ‘CAO voor Nederlandse Universiteiten’.
You will also receive a end-of-year bonus of 8.3% of your yearly income.

Candidates should hold a MA degree or equivalent. Preference will be given to candidates with a MA in the Humanities, Social sciences or Theology with a specialisation in the field of Islam and Muslim societies.

UNESCO-Poland Fellowships Program 2010 in Engineering

With a view to promoting human resource capacities in the least developed countries (LDCs) and to enhancing international understanding and friendship among nations and the people of Poland, the Polish National Commission for UNESCO and the AGH International Promotion Centre for Technology and Engineering Education (AGH IPCTEE) under the auspice of UNESCO & AGH University of Science and Technology (Krakow), are placing at the disposal of UNESCO fifteen (15) fellowships of a six months duration starting on 1 October 2010 for the benefit of Member States listed in Annex I of the announcement letter. Beneficiaries of these fellowships will be given the opportunity to undertake an individual research programme in the field of Science and Technology.

Details regarding the fellowships offered and the criteria of selection are listed below. The Polish authorities will make the final decision.

A. FIELD OF RESEARCH

B. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Please see Annex III of the announcement letter for a detailed explanation of requirements for each programme (as they vary from one another).

C. FACILITIES OFFERED BY THE POLISH AUTHORITIES

(i) Free tuition;
(ii) Monthly allowance of 1350 PLN zlotys (approximatively US$ 450) corresponding to the salary of a local junior research fellow. Thus, all living expenses in Poland are to be borne by the fellows with this allowance; and;
(iii) An installation allowance of 1350 PLN zlotys to be paid upon arrival.
No provision to finance or lodge family members is made.

At the end of the research studies, the beneficiaries will receive a certificate attesting to their attendance at the host institution.

D. FACILITIES OFFERED BY UNESCO

(i) International travel expenses: (at the most economical rate) from the beneficiary’s country to Poland and return will be covered by UNESCO under its Regular Programme Budget.

(ii) Health insurance for fellowship beneficiaries who are declared medically fit: UNESCO fellowship holders may be covered by a special accident/ health insurance policy, taken out by the Organization for the duration of the fellowship. The costs of the health insurance is subscribed to and covered by UNESCO* on behalf of the fellows.

* ONLY THE TWO SELECTED CANDIDATES WILL BE REQUIRED TO SEND TO THE FELLOWHIPS DEPARTMENT PROGRAMME SECTION A COMPLETE MEDICAL DOSSIER, THE PRESCRIBED FORM OF WHICH WILL BE SENT ALONG WITH THE LETTER OF AWARD.

E. VISA

Selected fellows from countries where there are Polish Embassies or Consulates will have to obtain their entry visa in the country prior to their departure. Fellows from countries where no such Embassy/ Consulate exists must secure their visa through the nearest Embassy of Poland.

UNESCO/POLAND provide no allowance to defray passport and visa expenses and the selected beneficiaries will have to secure themselves their own visa.

F. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION FILES

One candidature per invited Member State. Original applications in duplicate must be channelled through the National Commission for UNESCO of the candidate’s country and reach Mr. Ali Zaid, Chief, Participation Programme and Fellowships Section, by 15 June 2010 at the latest. An advance copy of the application may be sent by fax (33.1) 45.68.55.03. Applications should have imperatively the following attachments in DUPLICATE:

(i) UNESCO fellowships application forms, duly completed in English;
(ii) Two photographs attached to the applications (4×6 cm);
(iii) Certified copies (in English) of Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree obtained; and,
(iv) The UNESCO certificates of language knowledge, duly completed by a relevant authority, if the mother tongue of the candidate is not English.

PhD Position in Historical Geology and Palaeontology at Uppsala University, Sweden

Palaeobiology and phylogeny of Cambrian lophotrochozoans

The Cambrian explosion some 540 Ma ago generated a large number of sclerite-bearing taxa whose relationships are beginning to be understood by use of the stem- and crown-group distinction. In particular, large numbers of putative lophotrochozoans (i.e. annelids, brachiopods, molluscs and their close relatives) are known, although their phylogeny is poorly understood. We intend to address this question by a large-scale study of the rich Cambrian fossil record of scleritome animals. One focus of the work will be a detailed analysis of exceptionally preserved lophotrochozoans from the Burgess Shale and Chengjiang.

Applicants should have a university degree preferably in palaeontology or zoology to work on these challenging problems. A working knowledge of the methods and principles of systematics is desirable. Fluency in spoken and written English is required. You should be interested in informing other people about your work; the ability to cooperate with others is important.

Applications should include a CV, university transcripts that include a list of courses and grades, names, mail and e-mail addresses of two referees, list of any publications, and a short (one paragraph) statement of research/career interests.

The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative can be part of position (max 20%).

The PhD position is four years where financing for the first year will by a postgraduate study grant (utbildningsbidrag) and the following 3 years as an employee of the university as a PhD student.

The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of graduate studies. Local guidelines at Uppsala University determine the salary levels.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Degree
At the time of the application, researchers must be in possession of a doctoral degree or have at least 4 years of research experience (full time equivalent) after obtaining a degree, which formally allows them to embark on a doctorate whether or not a doctorate was envisaged.

Nationality
Researchers from all countries are eligible for the programme. They cannot apply for an institute located in their country of nationality or residence.

Disciplines
The programme is open to all disciplines in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences. It also welcomes applications from the arts, life and exact sciences (if the research project does not require laboratory or specific facilities). Applicants are advised to check the participating IAS’ websites to learn more about the scientific orientation of the Institute they wish to apply for.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The EURIAS fellowships offer the following conditions:

SELECTION

Application assessment

The selection of applicants who are eligible for a fellowship is competitive, merit-based and conducted through an internationally independent and recognised peer review process.

The EURIAS Fellowship Programme undertakes a detailed qualitative assessment according to the following criteria:

Quality of the proposal (innovative, path-breaking, high-impact)
Ability to carry out the research proposal
Theoretical and methodological framework of the research proposal
Impact beyond intra-disciplinary specialisations

Relevance of a residency in an Institute for Advanced Study for the research project

Peer review

For the evaluation of the research proposals, the EURIAS Fellowship Programme resorts to the advice of external referees chosen, according to their specific expertise and research interests, out of a pool of some 75 referees. Selection of the external referees is based on individual excellence, an overall coverage of social sciences and humanities (and in some cases natural and exact sciences), diversity of geographic origin, age and gender balance.

Selection Committee

The Selection Committee is composed of one scientific representative of each participating IAS plus three external internationally recognized scholars with specific expertise in ethics. The members are selected for their scientific excellence, their international experience and their openness to interdisciplinarity.

On the basis of the scientific assessment made by the experts and as a result of its discussions, the Selection Committee agrees on a short-list of fellows to be proposed to the IAS.

IAS Scientific Boards

IAS make their final selection out of the short-listed applications and inform the Programme Officer accordingly. The assessment of applications is based on a consistent set of appropriateness criteria (matching of research proposals with the specificities of the IAS):

Interaction with the group of prospective co-fellows
Relevance of the IAS choice by the applicant
Specific scholarly environment or relevance of interaction with local researchers

The Republic of Cyprus is offering up to a total of sixteen (16) full scholarships of 12-months duration to study for the attainment of the Master in Business Administration (MBA) or Master in Public Sector Management (MPSM) title for the academic year 2010-2011.

The Universities taking part in the scheme are: the Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM), the European University Cyprus (EUC), the University of Cyprus (UCY) and the University of Nicosia (UNIC). Each University will receive up to four (4) students who will attend the above study programme as official scholarship holders from the Republic of Cyprus. Eligible candidates are citizens of the list of scholarship recipient countries for the academic year 2010-2011, as per the distribution shown below:

Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM)
Eligible candidates to apply for the scholarships to study at the CIIM Master in Business Administration (MBA) or Master in Public Sector Management (MPSM) programmes are citizens of Azerbaijan, Gambia, Sudan and Uzbekistan.

European University Cyprus (EUC)
Eligible candidates to apply for the scholarships to study at the EUC Master in Business Administration (MBA) programme are citizens of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova and Pakistan.

Applications received until: 31 May 2010

University of Cyprus (UCY)
Eligible candidates to apply for the scholarships to study at the UCY Master in Business Administration (MBA) programme are citizens of Armenia, Iran and Kazakhstan.

Applications received until: 31 May 2010

University of Nicosia (UNIC)
Eligible candidates to apply for the scholarships to study at the UNIC Master in Business Administration (MBA) programme are citizens of Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Application procedure

In order to submit an application for scholarship, the applicant must fill-in the relevant application form for the respective University programme. Along with the University application each candidate must attain an official endorsement by her/his country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs using the Endorsement Form (detailed instructions on the endorsement procedure are included in the document).

The applicant may then submit his/her application along with the endorsement form at a Competent Consular Authority of the Republic of Cyprus of their choice, not later than the deadline shown above for each University.

In order to expedite the process, it is strongly recommended that the applicant forwards a copy of the application form and a copy of the duly completed and stamped endorsement form to the Academic Institute organizing the program, as soon as he/she attains these documents.

The originals should be submitted or sent to the Competent Consular Authority of the Republic of Cyprus, before the deadline (as instructed above). It is noted that ONLY applications accompanied by duly completed and stamped endorsement forms (by the applicant΄s Ministry of Foreign Affairs) will be considered for a scholarship award. Candidates from Armenia should obtain an endorsement of their application through the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia.

Important notes concerning the award of scholarships:

Candidates who have received a scholarship of either short or long duration by the Republic of Cyprus within the last two (2) years 2008 or 2009 are NOT eligible to apply for these scholarships.
Eligible candidates must be permanent residents of their country of citizenship.
All scholarships are offered officially by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus to other Governments on a bilateral basis as official technical assistance and not to individuals. Therefore, it is expected that with the end of the scholarship, the scholarship recipients will return to their country of citizenship so that the recipient country is benefited to the highest possible degree by the transfer of know-how and not just the individual receiving the scholarshsip.
For the scholarship to be awarded it is necessary for the candidate to accept the Terms and Conditions of the scholarship.

[New Zealand] Medical Imaging Technologists (Mammography) Scholarship Programme

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) is offering a total of eight individual scholarships for students commencing study towards and attaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science (Mammography) at Unitec NZ (ScHSc). Eight scholarships will be available in the 1st Semester; however, if eight are not awarded in the 1st Semester, the remaining scholarships will be awarded in the 2nd Semester.

The funding available for each NZBCF Scholarship recipient is $3,000 for a FULL scholarship and $2,400 for a PARTIAL scholarship. The NZBCF Scholarships will be composed of:

a FULL Scholarship of $3,000 each for students commencing the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science (Mammography) at Unitec NZ (ScHSc). The courses to be completed and passed are: HEAL 8020 (30 credits) and HEAL 8008 (30 credits) or
a PARTIAL Scholarship of $2400 each for students commencing upgrading to the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science (Mammography) at Unitec NZ (ScHSc). The courses to be completed and passed are: HEAL 8020 Upgrade (18 credits) and HEAL 8008 (30 credits).
The pre-requisite course is HEAL 7168 (L7) Mammography; this course must have been completed within five years of employment in post-graduate studies.

Hermes Fellowships for Postdoctoral Student in Humanities and Social Sciences, France

Hermes Fellowships were designed to offer young and promising foreign researchers in the humanities and social sciences the chance to be visiting researchers in French universities and research centers. This program is open to researchers from: China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, and South Africa.

The Hermes Program is financed by the French Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Education and Research, the Department of Human and Social Sciences of the National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS), and the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l`Homme (FMSH).

Hermes fellowships are granted for 3 to 9 month periods. They were designed in order to give foreign researchers the opportunity to:

carry out an individual research project within a hosting laboratory;
become part of French and European scientific networks;
set up lasting partnerships between their home institutions and the hosting institutions in France
The hosting laboratories in France – university research units or research institutions in Paris or elsewhere in the country – are chosen by the invited researchers. This decision is made in agreement with the fellowship selection committee and the scientific board of the FMSH. This joint process is intended to help candidates make the necessary contacts.

Scientific Fields Covered by the Hermes Program
All disciplines in the humanities and social sciences are eligible. However, priority is given to research projects addressing issues facing the contemporary world and those that have an interdisciplinary dimension.
