The Jefferson Fellowships program was launched in 1967 to enhance public understanding through the news media of cultures, issues and trends in the Asia Pacific region, broadly defined as Asia, the Pacific Islands and the United States. The Fellowships provide U.S. and Asia Pacific journalists with an opportunity to broaden their understanding of Asia Pacific issues and build a professional network through one week of dialogue with professional colleagues and experts at the East-West Center, followed by a two-week study tour to cities in Asia or the U.S.
Fall 2010 Jefferson Fellowships
Theme: The Road to Energy Security: Paved with Efficiencies, Renewable Technologies and Investment
Energy security is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, especially in light of its inextricable link to economic well-being and the environment. However, the uneven distribution of energy supplies among countries has led to significant vulnerabilities. Threats to energy security include the political instability of several energy producing countries, the manipulation of energy supplies, the competition over energy sources, attacks on supply infrastructure, as well as accidents and natural disasters. For these reasons, governments in nearly all the large consuming nations are now considering various domestic and foreign policy measures to increase energy efficiencies develop renewable technologies to scale and create a positive investment climate for industry.
Against this backdrop, the Fall 2010 Jefferson Fellowships program will look specifically at two of the largest users of energy, the U.S. and China, and their efforts in addressing energy security. The program will take special care to look at the challenges and opportunities involved in improving energy efficiency and in developing renewable technologies. In addition, the Fall 2010 program will examine the two countries’ efforts to facilitate joint research and development. Finally, the program will examine how each country seeks to promote public and private investment in the supplies of today’s fossil fuel sources as well as the clean technologies that will transform the energy system for the future.

Who Can Apply: Working print, broadcast, and online journalists in the United States, the Pacific Islands, and Asia with a minimum of five years of professional experience. Applicants must have the ability to communicate in English in a professional, multi-cultural environment.

Funding: The Jefferson Fellowships are supported from a grant from The Freeman Foundation. The grant funds economy class, roundtrip airfare to and from Honolulu, Hawaii as well as program-related air and ground transportation, lodging, and meals for participating journalists. A modest per diem is also provided. Participants are responsible for all applicable visa fees and any additional visa-related expenses.
News organizations are also asked to support their employees' participation by cost-sharing whenever possible. An "Employers Statement of Support" is a required part of the application. While financial assistance from the employer is not required, employers are encouraged to provide support to their Jefferson Fellows as a demonstration of their commitment to the program.
HOW TO APPLY
Applicants must submit the Jefferson Fellowships application form and
A maximum three-page letter outlining your issues of interest, a brief description of your news organization, what you expect to accomplish if an award is granted and topics you propose to address in your paper and presentation at the East-West Center. It should be a topic that represents a perspective from your country/community related to the program theme.
A letter of recommendation on official letterhead from your supervisor describing your suitability for the Fellowship and the benefit the organization hopes to derive from your participation in the program.
Names, addresses, phone/fax numbers and e-mail of three people who may be contacted by the Center as references. Two of these references should be people outside your news organization.
The “Employer’s Statement of Support” form completed by your employer (form is included in the 3-page application).

Post-doctoral Research Scientist is needed to utilize remote sensing technology
to monitor, predict, and facilitate the control of infectious disease transmission.
Climate changes are now apparent across the globe and expected to grow. The observed
changes are causing a wide range of impacts – rising temperature, changing precipitation patterns, significant shift in ecosystems, and increased invasive species and disease pathogens.

As environmental and climatic factors have a profound role in initiating,
promoting and sustaining the transmission of infectious diseases, the objective of
the research is to develop empirical and theoretical models and techniques for
disease surveillance and control. This research includes aspects of ecological
modeling in climate change scenarios.

The position requires a recent Ph.D. (within 2 years from graduation) in Earth
sciences, physics, mathematics, computer sciences, theoretical ecology or engineering
with emphases on modeling diseases or biological systems. Familiarity with statistical methods (biostatistics desirable), numerical methods, artificial intelligence techniques, dynamic system modeling, common geospatial and GIS techniques, and in particular, with C, R, Matlab and ArcGIS are definite assets. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required.

The Automatic Control Lab at KTH announces one open position for a post-doc on the topic

Identification of Complex, Structured and Networked Systems

The Automatic Control Lab at KTH conducts research in networked control systems,
control of communication systems, systems biology and system identification. Much
of the research is conducted within the Linnaeus Centre ACCESS, Sweden's largest
research effort in networked systems, and in EU-projects.

It is increasingly common that engineering systems are built from components that
are interconnected in complex networks. Examples are found in the vehicle and IT
industry, in energy and material distribution, and in industrial process control.
This project concerns development of systematic system identification techniques
for large-scale complex networks.

We are also partner in the new EU project AUTOPROFIT (Advanced Autonomous Model-
Based Operation of Industrial Process Systems) where the objective is to develop
methodologies which decrease the modeling cost and provide efficient model maintenance in process control applications. Here we will develop a system identification framework for model predictive control.

Applications are being accepted for the Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Kenyon College. Intended to complement the College's Yarbrough Dissertation Fellowship http://ping.fm/qK8oh program the post-doctoral program creates a one-year teaching fellowship in the humanities or humanistic social sciences for holders of PhD's who come from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds. The program seeks to attract recent recipients of doctoral degrees whose research focus is in international fields of study, including comparative or cross-cultural scholarship.

Kenyon will provide a stipend of $50,000, plus insurance and health benefits, and a small moving allowance. The College will also provide some allowance to cover research, travel to conferences, and professional expenses.

To be eligible, candidates must have completed a PhD in a humanities discipline or humanistic social science discipline from an accredited university prior to the commencement of the fellowship. Generally, the program seeks fellows with doctorates in one of the following fields: African Diaspora Studies, American Studies, Anthropology, Art History, Asian Studies, Classics, Dance, Drama, Economics, English, Environmental Studies, History, Humanities, International Studies, Legal Studies,
Modern Languages and Literature, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Public Policy, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Women's and Gender Studies.

As a reflection of Kenyon's commitment to promoting diversity in thought and experience within the academy, this fellowship is intended for members of under-represented groups (e.g. ethnic minorities; women in fields that are occupied predominantly by men, or men in fields that are occupied predominantly by women; and persons who are first-generation college graduates within their families).

This annual fellowship is funded by the Ford Motor Company and organized by the 92nd Street Y to provide education and support to community leaders engaged in the nonprofit sector. To date, 210 individuals from 57 countries have received the Ford Fellowship, which is now in its eleventh year.

A successful applicant must demonstrate that he or she:

§ is a community leader engaged in the nonprofit sector, either professionally or as a volunteer;

§ is successfully addressing issues that affect the community’s well-being; and

§ would benefit from an intensive three-week nonprofit management training course in New York .

Previous Ford Fellows include:

§ a South African AIDS educator;

§ the president of a Jewish aid society facilitating Bosnia-Herzegovina’ s transition to democracy;

§ a sustainable development expert from Zimbabwe ;

§ the founder of an Indian organization that educates women and children working in the silk industry; and

The residency takes place June 2-June 22, 2011 in New York City. Airfare, accommodation, food, transportation, instruction, and other program-related expenses are included in the fellowship, and participants receive a small stipend upon arrival.

During the intensive three-week residency, Ford Fellows take classes in areas including nonprofit management strategy and leadership at Columbia University ’s Picker Center for Executive Education. The academic curriculum is complemented by visits to model nonprofits in New York City and meetings with academic, business, and government leaders. The experience is enhanced by Fellows’ residency at the 92nd Street Y, a Jewish community and cultural center founded in 1874 that annually serves over 300,000 people of all national, ethnic, religious, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Hasso-Plattner- Institute (HPI) is a privately financed institute affiliated with the University of Potsdam. The Institute's founder and benefactor Professor Hasso Plattner, who is also co-founder and chairman of the supervisory board of SAP AG, has created an opportunity for students to experience a unique education in IT systems engineering in a professional research environment with a strong practice orientation.

In 2005, HPI initiated the research school in "Service-Oriented Systems Engineering" under the scientific supervision of Professors Jürgen Döllner, Holger Giese, Robert Hirschfeld, Christoph Meinel, Felix Naumann, Hasso Plattner, Andreas Polze, Mathias Weske, and Patrick Baudisch.

The Life Science Zurich Graduate School houses several highly competitive Ph.D. programs, run jointly by the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. Each program offers research and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree. Accepted students perform their research project in one of the participating research groups of their favorite program, according to their scientific interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are offered throughout the curriculum. The program language is English throughout. Ph.D. studies usually last 3-4 years.

Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a Masters degree or equivalent from a university in a relevant field before starting the Ph.D. program. Applicants accepted for the program will have to register with either the University of Zurich or ETH Zurich, depending on the affiliation of their future research group.
