The Department of Resource Economics at the University of Nevada, Reno,
has received additional funding to offer three research assistantships
to new Graduate Students starting in fall 2009. The assistantships
include a stipend of $18,000 per year, a partial tuition waiver, and
health insurance coverage. Conditional on strong performance and in
absence of any unforeseen shortfall in funding, the full assistantship
will be available for up to five years. While we give preference to PhD
students, well-qualified MS students are also encouraged to apply for
this funding opportunity.

Our graduate program provides a strong foundation in microeconomic
theory and quantitative methods, with focus on Resource and
Environmental Economics, Regional Economics, and Applied Econometrics.

econometrics group specialize in time series analysis and (dynamic)
panel data econometrics. Selected candidates obtain a 3-years position
financed by the research school METEOR of the Faculty of Economics and
Business Administration or directly by the Department.

JOB Description

The candidate will carry out a research project in one of the above
mentioned areas under the supervision of members of the group (see

candidate will spend at most 20% of his time to teaching duties.
Candidates with a strong methodological/ theoretical background in
econometrics and/or statistics will be favored. Compensation will be
according to standard Dutch salary levels for PhD students.

JOB Qualifications

In order to qualify for a PhD position the candidate must have
successfully completed a two-years Master degree (MSc. or MPhil.) in
Economics, Econometrics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related area at
the latest by August 31st 2009 and have a good “competence” in written
and spoken English. Interest in theory and methods is a plus. Candidates
with a one-year Master degree may also apply but will have to follow and
successfully finish the second year courses of the METEOR MPhil research
master program before qualifying for the PhD position.

MarinERA (MarinERA) is a project funded by the ERA-Net Scheme of the EU FP6 (2004-2008). It is a partnership of the leading Marine RTD Funding Organisations in 13 European Member States (coordinated by IFREMER and managed by the Marine Board -ESF). The MarinERA project main objectives are to:

• Map European marine RTD programmes and specialised infrastructures, facilitating the creation of an internal market and quantifying the existing European marine research capacity.
• Facilitate the networking of Marine RTD funding agencies in the European Union, leading to a more cost effective and efficient use of Member State resources.
• Contribute to the development of a European marine research policy, by identifying future scientific challenges.
• Provide a basis for the sharing of available resources to address priority issues which are beyond the capacities of individual Member States.

Within this project, the division of Biosciences at the Alfred-Wegener-Institut for Polar- and Marine Research (AWI), Bremerhaven, Member of the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft (HGF) is looking for two highly motivated
Ph.D. students (13/2 TVöD).

The positions are based in the Department Shelf Seas Systems Ecology at the Biological Station Helgoland on the Island of Helgoland (North Sea). The station provides excellent facilities for marine field- and laboratory research. We offer a highly dynamic working environment.

Position 1: Code 28/Bio-H

Background: The projects aims to analyse the impact of climate change on the adaptability and changes in the feeding behaviour of littoral fish populations at their northern and southern distribution limits (cold- and warm-adapted species). The climate-related distribution and adaptation patterns of fish key species in the littoral zones along the costs of Western Europe will be assessed Within the part project „Trophic Ecology“ changes in the trophic levels, the niche width and their adaptability to potential changes in prey spectra in relation to climate warming should be analysed along latitudinal gradients. The project will include extensive field studies as well as laboratory experiments on the adaptive potential of fish species and changes in the metabolic pathways under elevated temperature conditions.

Tasks: Within this project extensive field studies on the trophic ecology of key fish species along latitudinal gradients should be carried out (Western European shoreline from Portugal to Norway). In addition, laboratory experiments with different littoral fish species from different origin will be conducted. Based on stable isotope and fatty acid analyses the trophic position and the niche width of key fish species will be analysed. In addition, laboratory experiments will be conducted in order to analyse changes in fatty acid metabolisms and stable isotope fractionation under elevated temperature regimes.

Requirements: A profound knowledge in experimental ecology and fish taxonomy is required. Successful candidates have a diploma or master degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, marine science or fisheries science. We expect a strong interest in general ecological questions and great enthusiasm for scientific work. We also expect some experience in carrying out and analyzing ecological experiments including general statistics. Fluency in English is a must.

Position 2: Code 29/Bio-H

Background: The ecosystem North Sea has undergone severe change in the last decades, but we still know fairly little on the effect of global and regional change on the pelagic component of the ecosystem. Changes in the phytoplankton and the zooplankton at the base of the food web might have strong consequences for production of higher trophic levels. This project aims to elucidate the changes in interactions that have taken place in the pelagic ecosystem of the North Sea. To this end, several long-time series will be combined and analysed.

Tasks: Within this project the first task will be to collect the data available for the North Sea and store them in a common format and database. Some of these data will need to be quality controlled, before they can be used for analysis. Using state-of-the-art analytical techniques the successful candidate will then concentrate on the changes that have taken place in the phytoplankton-zooplankton interface.

Requirements: Successful candidates have a diploma or master degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, marine science or statistics. We require a strong background in the quantitative analysis of complex interactions. We further expect a strong interest in general ecological questions and great enthusiasm for scientific work. Fluency in English is a must.

INCORE (International Conflict Research Institute) based at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland, and associate site of the United Nations University, is please to offer five bursary places for its 10th International Summer School and roundtable on ‘Evaluating
Research in Divided Societies’. The bursaries are funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The bursaries are specifically available for the Evaluation Module of the Summer School, see http://www.incore. ulst.ac.uk/ courses/ss/ and to attend the
‘Evaluating Research in Divided Societies’ Roundtable that will follow the Summer School.

The bursaries will help widen participation in the Evaluation Summer School Module, but are also part of the ‘Evaluating Research in Divided Societies’ project which INCORE is undertaking in partnership with the IDRC. The project considers the challenges of evaluating research in violently divided societies, and how different evaluation methodologies could be adapted and utilized to deal with the specific ethical, methodological and practical challenges that research in divided societies presents (see extended notes below).

Notes: ‘Evaluating Research in Divided Societies’ Project

In spite of the increased funding for research in violently divided societies in recent decades, specific frameworks for the evaluation of this type of research do not exist. Currently, evaluation of Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding (CPPB) interventions in violently divided societies is largely geared towards program evaluation, rather than evaluation of research. Although there are many similarities between CPPB program evaluation and evaluation of research in violently divided societies, the differences between the two, coupled with the fact that this research is often used to inform CPPB programming decisions,
highlight the need for research-specific evaluation frameworks to be developed. Moreover, given the relationship of research to CPPB programming decisions, there is a pressing need to develop research-specific evaluation frameworks if donor organizations are to continue to justify funding CPPB programs and activities. Therefore, through a literature review, commissioned “think-pieces” and a roundtable meeting of practitioners and academics whose expertise lies in the fields in evaluation and in researching violently divided
societies, the proposed project will consider the challenges of evaluating research in violently divided societies, and how different evaluation methodologies could be adapted and utilised to deal with the specific ethical, methodological and practical challenges that research in divided societies presents.

The Transportation Research Institute (IMOB) is one of the 9 research institutes of Hasselt University. The scientific research within IMOB is concentrated on three core fields: traffic safety, transportation and logistics. The institute organizes the research in traffic safety, within the Policy Research Centre for Mobility & Public Works, track Traffic Safety and researches transportation behaviour by using activity-based models. Besides expertise within public transport, IMOB also gathers knowledge in the research field of logistics and organization of freight transport.
Besides fundamental research, there is an applied research unit that carries out research projects for several clients (EU, federal and regional authorities, local authorities, companies, …). Themes we work on are traffic safety, transportation behaviour, public transport, bike policy, transportation management and freight transport. About 35 researchers are working for IMOB. This researcher will work within the logistics department.

Job description
This Ph. D. research will be carried out within the research programme Logistics of the Transportation Research Institute, more specifically within the domain of freight flows. Candidates will be involved in developing a freight transport model for Flanders.
Ph. D. student 1: Concepts from the sector of freight transport, such as just-in-time and lean production, will have to be integrated in the new model. An extensive data collection is necessary and will precede the actual development of the model. Imperative data are for instance data on individual transport, data on the location of terminals, distribution centers … and data on transport and logistics costs.
Ph. D. student 2: Important decisions, within the framework of this research, that need to be integrated in the model are the size and the frequency of the freight loading, the transport mode and the structure of the transport chain.
Profile and diploma
Applicants should have a Masters degree in Business Engineering, Business Engineering in Computer Science, Applied Economics, Civil Engineering, Informatics, Mathematics, Physics or an equivalent academic college degree. A strong quantitative interest and a thorough knowledge of a computer language are to ones favour.
