[Italy] Master Scholarship 2010 in Insurance and Risk Management at MIB School of Management of Trieste

MIB School of Management of Trieste, Italy is pleased to announce a scholarship competition for applicants to the XI edition of the Master in Insurance and Risk Management.

The Scholarships will go toward tuition fees to attend the XI edition of the Master in Insurance and Risk Management (January 2010 – December 2010).

[Spain] PhD Studentships in Communication Technologies at Universitat Pompeu Fabra

The NeTS research group is looking for PhD students coming from renowned universities from around the world, with a very good grade record, who have a very high interest in wireless, and multimedia communications in the Internet, and the protocols associated with it. Paramount is a desire to learn and push the limits of current technology, as well as providing new insight into today’s and tomorrow’s networks and services.

We are seeking for two profiles:

1. Students coming from electrical engineering, computer science or related fields, interested in research on pervasive wireless communications, specially those based on the IEEE 802.11 principles, including sensor, ad-hoc, infrastructure WLANs and mesh networks, as well as on the future Internet architectures for multimedia communications, specially those based on distributed -P2P- principles.
2. Students interested on economical and regulatory aspects of telecommunications technologies from communications engineering fields and knowledge about communication markets and/or economic/regulatory aspects. Candidates coming from social sciences areas with a ground base on telecommunications technologies will also be considered. In both cases, a motivation to interdisciplinary work oriented to understand relation among technical, economical and regulatory issues is compulsory.

[Sweden] PhD Position in Aquatic Ecology at Umeå University

PhD position in Ecology: The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science has about 160 members including 55 PhD researchers and 55 PhD students.

A new project financed by the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (FORMAS) in aquatic ecology, entitled: “Eutrophication as a selection factor for the occurrence of predation-resistant and potentially pathogenic bacteria in aquatic environments”.

Project Description

Eutrophication is one of the largest threats to aquatic environments, as it causes a number of drastic changes in the system. One example is phytoplankton communities that often become dominated by inedible, filamentous or toxic forms. The underlying mechanism for this may be increased predation on lower trophic levels, selecting for increased occurrence of predation-resistanc e in nutrient rich environments.

Evolution has taken many solutions for bacterial resistance to protozoan predation. Some examples are increase or decrease in cell size, production of toxins, cell aggregations, biofilm formation, and resistance to degradation within the protozoa. Some predation-resistant bacteria are also resistant to phagocytosis by human macrophages, suggesting that protozoa constitute a biological gym for the occurrence of potentially pathogenic bacteria.

The above theories will be tested within the PhD project. The link between ecosystem drivers, bacterial functional diversity and epidemiological factors will be investigated in aquatic systems. The PhD project will include field experiments as well as selection and microcosm experiments in laboratory. The tularemia-bacterium Francisella tularensis will be used as an example for a predation-resistant and potentially pathogenic bacterium. The project is performed in collaboration with ecologists, microbiologists and medical scientists.

Assoc. Prof. Agneta Andersson, Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Umeå University will be main supervisor in the project. Prof. Anders Sjöstedt, Department of Clinical Bacteriology, Umeå University, and Assoc. Prof. Mats Forsman, Swedish Defence Research Agency will be associated supervisors.

Requirements

Applicants must have completed a research degree (e.g. Masters) or university study of 180 hp (3 years), including 120 hp (2 year) biological subjects, 15 hp ecology or corresponding subject, and a 30 hp independent project in ecology or a similar field. It is qualifying to have good knowledge in ecological theories and training in microbial ecology and molecular biology/genetics. The successful applicant should have good ability to write and speak in English, creativity, power of initiative, independence and ability to collaborate. Evaluations will be based on results on University courses, quality of master’s thesis, references, interviews and the letter of intent.

A PhD education is 4 years (48 months) and the PhD-student will get a formal position at the start of the project (Sw: “doktorandanstä llning”). Up to 10 % as teaching assistant may be included in the position (then the position will be extended accordingly) .

[Sweden] Postdoc Positions on the Role of Climate Change for the Evolution of Biodiversity, Umeå University

The aim of the project is to understand how climate change affects evolution and the global distribution of species. The earth is subject to recurrent and rapid climate shifts at various time-scales, but the consequences of this has not been incorporated into models of evolution. Climate shifts cause extinction, splitting, and merging of gene pools, potentially affecting rates of speciation and species extinction. There are two opposing views on the effect of climate change on species diversification. According to one view, climate shifts enhance speciation by promoting lineage splitting. The alternative view is that climate shifts curb speciation by causing extinction or merging of diverging gene pools, as well as leading to species extinction. In the project, models of past climate change are combined with phylogenetic data to address how diversification of species and spatial patterns in genetic divergence within species are affected by climate variability. A paper providing a background to the project is found in Annu. Rev. Ecol. Syst. 33:741-777.

Position 1 investigates the role of climate variability for the diversification of species. Data on past climate change from climate models are used together with phylogenies from a range of taxa to test for an association between climate variability and species diversification.

Position 2 tests how climatic variability affects the degree of genetic divergence among populations. Data on levels of genetic divergence among populations are combined with data on past climate change from climate models to test for a correlation between genetic divergence and climatic stability, both within species (in cases where climatic stability varies across its geographic range) and between species inhabiting regions differing in climatic stability.

To qualify for the positions you should have a PhD degree or equivalent. Experience with geographic information systems and bioclimatic modelling is meriting for both positions. Position 1 requires good knowledge on methods of statistical inference from phylogenetic data. Position 2 requires familiarity with theories on causes for spatial patterns in genetic variation and knowledge on statistical inference using genetic data. The positions are for two years and available immediately, preferably starting no later than September 1, 2009.

The Centre for International Public Health Policy at the University of Edinburgh is offering two fully funded PhD studentships, covering fees (either UK/EU or international) and an annual stipend (for current academic year of £12,940), to commence in September 2009.

KSOP Masters Education. We believe that a Ph.D. graduate school is unlikely to be successful without the background / infrastructure and the “funneling / filtering” through a corresponding associated, interdisciplinary coordinated masters program, aiming at attracting excellent students from abroad.

36 students per year can be admitted to our masters program. The best students of the masters program are supported by the KSOP Scholarship Program. Access to the KSOP masters education is granted via an application procedure.

A study plan is developed for each individual masters student (corresponding to his/her educational background) when entering the KSOP.

The M.Sc. course is divided into four stages providing the students with the necessary prerequisites (Stage I: Introduction), to give them a solid background on the most important topics within the wide and diverse field of Optics and Photonics (Stage II: Core Subjects) and let them acquire specialized knowledge (Stage III: Specialization) to be able to competently perform a six-month research project on a current topic of research (masters thesis). In addition, an 8-weeks industrial internship is scheduled between stages 2 and 3.

Scholarship
The KSOP scholarship amounts to 800 Euro/month for international students and 400 Euro/month for German students. Part of the scholarship is a research assistantship. Within the scope of this assistantship, you will have the opportunity to work on a research project in one of the KSOP institutes.

The scholarship is first admitted for 12 months. At the end you have to proof your successful participation in the KSOP M.Sc. Program through very good study results in order to extend the scholarship for another 12 months.

You can apply for a scholarship at the KSOP Office after having applied for the program M.Sc. in Optics & Photonics. Please fill out the KSOP Scholarship application form. The application deadline for the upcoming winter semester is July 15 each year.
