Application for the 2010 cycle of the UNESCO-L’ORÉAL For Women in Science International Fellowships is now open.

The Fellowships are jointly offered by UNESCO and L’ORÉAL, as part of the For Women In Science Programme, to support and promote women in scientific research all over the world.

The international Fellowships are awarded to promising young women scientists, at the doctoral or postdoctoral level, to undertake a research project in the life sciences which has been accepted by a reputable institution outside their home country.

15 international Fellowships are awarded each year. Each Fellowship is worth a maximum of US$40,000 to cover a research period of up to 24 months.

The international Fellowships aspire to support the scientific vocations of young women, to give them the opportunity to build international networks in the scientific community, and to gain crucial experience that they can bring back and share with others in their home countries.

The Fellowship beneficiaries are geographically spread, three Fellows being selected from each of the following regions: Africa; Arab States; Asia & the Pacific; Europe & North America; and Latin America & the Caribbean.

Eligibility
Candidates must be female and no more than 35 years old (born after 1 January 1975).

Preference will be given to candidates already possessing a PhD degree (or equivalent) in the field of life sciences at the time of application. However, applications from doctoral students will be considered.

Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study.

Candidates must already be engaged in and undertake research in one or allied fields of life sciences, including biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy and physiology. Projects involving animal models (i.e. experimentation using vertebrate laboratory animals) will not be accepted; and preference is given to non cosmetic researches.

Applications must be submitted through and endorsed by the UNESCO National Commission of the Candidate’s home country.

Procedure and Deadlines
The deadline for submission to UNESCO headquarters is 30th June 2009. Applications from UK citizens must be submitted through the UK National Commission for UNESCO and received by 1st June 2009. The UK National Commission will consider and evaluate the applications and submit selected applications to UNESCO headquarters with its endorsement. Each National Commission can select and submit a maximum of four candidates.
After submission to UNESCO, the applications will be considered by a special Selection Committee, comprising representatives of UNESCO, L’ORÉAL and Life Sciences research communities & institutions.

JSPS Invitation Fellowship Program for Research in Japan (Long Term) FY2010 (2010-2011)

OUTLINE OF THE FELLOWSHIP
The JSPS Invitation Fellowship for Research in Japan (Long Term) is offered to promote international scientific cooperation and exchange. It allows researchers employed at designated Japanese research institutions to invite fellow researchers from other countries to Japan to participate in cooperative activities at
their research institutions.

Applications for this program must be submitted to JSPS by a host researcher in Japan through the head of his/her university or institution.

FIELDS OF RESEARCH
All fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences are included under this program.

HOST RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS
The applicant (host researcher) must be a researcher who is employed full-time or classified as being employed full-time at a university or research institution of the types listed in Table I. Fellows must conduct their research at the host’s affiliated institution.

* Full-time employment classification is determined by the regulations of the host institution.
** If a host researcher’s institution is not listed in the Table, please consult him/her. Other institutions can be eligible for the program if they take the necessary registration procedures and are regarded as eligible by JSPS.

ELIGIBILITY
The candidate must be a researcher with a research background equivalent to that of a professor, assistant professor or research associate in a Japanese university. As a rule, s/he should be employed full time in an overseas research institution in a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. (JSPS treats Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers in this manner.) Other researchers may be eligible if they have held a doctorate degree for a period of more than six years prior to April 1, 2010. If the candidate is of Japanese nationality, s/he must have lived abroad and been activity engaged in research for a period of over 10 years.

NUMBER OF FELLOWSHIPS AWARDED
Approximately 70 fellowships will be granted.

DURATION AND COMMENCEMENT OF FELLOWSHIPS

• Fellowships are awarded for a period of 2 months (61 days) to 10 months.
• Successful candidates must start the Fellowship in Japan during the following period:
  April 1, 2010 – March 31, 2011

TERMS OF AWARD
The terms of the Awards indicated below are subject to change.
?For fellows:

• A round-trip air ticket
• A monthly maintenance allowance of ¥369,000
• Domestic research travel allowance of ¥100,000
• Research expenses of ¥40,000
• Overseas travel accident and sickness insurance coverage
  For hosts:
  Host’s cooperation allowance of ¥50,000

APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR THE PROGRAM
Applicants (host researchers) are required to use JSPS’s electronic application system to apply for fellowships.

Applications for this program must be submitted to JSPS by a host researcher in Japan through the head of his/her university or institution. Foreign researchers wishing to participate in this program are advised to establish contact with a Japanese or foreign-resident researcher in their field and to ask him/her to submit an application. They should make this contact well in advance of the host institution’s application deadline indicated below.

Application process is as follows:

• Contact made between candidate and applicant (host researcher)
• Applicant (host researcher) submits application to institution’s head office
• Office submits application to JSPS
  • JSPS does not find or introduce host researchers.
  • JSPS does not accept applications submitted directly by foreign researchers or through diplomatic channels.
  • There is another application channel: JSPS also receives applications for the program through its overseas nominating authorities (Table II). Regarding this procedure, please contact the nominating authority in your country.

University of Manchester England prepare postgraduate scholarship bursary of £2,000, which is automatically deducted from student's fee at enrollment. At the University of Westminster you can apply for a scholarship once you have been offered a place (either conditional or unconditional) on a course at the University, but before you start your course. The only exception to this rule is if you are an undergraduate UK/EU student who started your course under the new tuition fee regime.

Film Independent, the organization that produces the Los Angeles Film Festival and the Spirit Awards, is proud to announce the launch of the @15 Short Film Contest, a new initiative designed to increase the opportunities for young filmmakers to get their films seen by a wider audience.

Presented by Best Buy, the @15 Short Film Contest is open to filmmakers ages 13-18, and there is no entry fee.

The Automatic Control Laboratory (Laboratoire d'Automatique, LA) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) is looking for a qualified candidate to undertake doctoral work in the area of Real-time Optimization of Dynamical Systems.

The project will focus on the use of measurements for real-time optimization. In particular, it is proposed to formalize some aspects of NCO tracking, a methodology developed at LA, which turns a dynamic optimization problem into a feedback control problem.

Applicants should have a strong background in dynamical systems, control, and optimization and hold a master's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering. EPFL offers highly competitive salaries. The position is available right away, but a start within 3-6 months is possible.
