Master Informatics Scholarships 2009/2010

The School of Informatics offers a number of scholarships of £2,000 for both home and overseas well-qualified postgraduate students on the following one year full-time master’s courses:

Scholarships will be offered to both home and overseas well-qualified applicants wishing to take up a place on any of the above courses in September 2009. The scholarships, each valued at £2,000, are intended to assist students to pay the fees for their chosen course of study. They will be awarded on a competitive basis to the most promising applicants.

How to apply

Complete an application form for your chosen programme of study, attaching a letter stating that you also wish to be considered for an Informatics Scholarship. Exceptionally well qualified applicants will be offered a scholarship at the time we make an offer of a place on the programme.

Deadlines for application

We will consider applications at three points in the year. If you wish to be considered for a scholarship, please make sure we receive your COMPLETE application form ( complete references, transcripts etc) and letter by one of these dates.

Terms and conditions
1. Scholarships are awarded at the sole discretion of the Course Director. Course Directors may require applicants to submit an assignment or an essay, for example, as part of the selection process.
2. Scholarships are only available to students paying the full fee on one of the participating courses.
3. The scholarship is intended to assist the student meet the cost of the fee payable in respect of the course and will be deducted from the fees charged to the student or the student’s sponsor.
4. The scholarship will not be recorded on the degree certificate from the University. However, references for students who have successfully completed the course may refer to the scholarship.
5. Applicants may only apply for a scholarship once, but if a deadline is missed it will automatically be considered for the next round.

Note that anyone who applied for the scholarships under previous rules will automatically be considered under the new rules.

YGGDRASIL mobility programme 2009-2010 Norway

The YGGDRASIL mobility programme offers funding for international Ph.D. students and younger researchers for research stays in Norway.

Personal mobility grants
As from the academic year 2009-2010, the Research Council of Norway is offering mobility grants to highly qualified, international Ph.D. students and younger researchers from 25 countries in connection with research stays in Norway of one to ten months through the YGGDRASIL mobility programme.

The mobility programme encompasses all subjects and disciplines and takes its name from Yggdrasil, the immense ash tree from Norse mythology whose branches extend throughout the world and into the heavens.

The programme offer grants to the following 25 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

Applicants must submit a personal mobility grant application via the Research Council's eSøknad electronic submission service.

The deadline for applying for grants under the YGGDRASIL mobility programme is in the spring for the following academic year.

The Department of Geological Sciences and Laboratory for Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics at the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) invites applications for a Postdoctoral fellow and a PhD scholarship in remote sensing, spatial analysis, and modeling of Antarctic sea ice. The
project is funded by the new NASA research project "Antarctic Sea Ice Thickness from Space: Validating Estimates from the Laser and Radar
Satellite Altimeters with Ship-Based Measurements."

Both positions have the possibility to participate in field experiments. Each will be part of a multi-disciplinary research team of collaborators
working on the characterization of sea ice thickness and extent, snow-ice interface temperature, ice concentration, sea ice related bio-geochemistry and ecosystems from both satellite remote sensing and in situ measurements, as well as ice, ocean, and atmosphere interaction and modeling. Satellite data to be used includes, but is not limited to, ICESat, AMSR-E, RADARSAT, MODIS, EnviSAT, and QuikSCAT.

Candidates for the PhD scholarship must hold a Master's or equivalent degree in science (remote sensing, geophysics, physical geography, or
geology). Candidates for the Postdoctoral position must hold a PhD degree in science or engineering (remote sensing, geophysics,
atmosphere, civil engineering). For both positions candidates should have a strong background in research, image processing and analysis, and
spatial data analysis. Strong programming skills and modeling experiences are a plus. The advisors to this position expect a general
interest in climate studies and the Antarctic. Applicants must have good written and verbal communication skills.

Austria : OMV Scholarship for innovative master program

Furthermore OMV awards two scholarships to the outstanding MSc Program "Renewable Energy in Central and Eastern Europe" to participants from Hungary and Slovakia. UK : IMSAS PhD Studentships

The closing date for IMSAS PhD studentships for this year will be 26 June.

IMSAS PhD studentships are open to candidates applying to the PhD programme in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics or Pure Mathematics.

UK : Robust navigation and path planning for ExoMars rovers

PhD Description: Cranfield University

Under the Aurora Exploration Program, the European Space Agency (ESA) developed the concept and lunched the preparation activities of the ExoMars mission. This mission will start in 2013 whereas the flight will last nearly one year and has as objectives the following:

  • To search for signs of past and present life on Mars;
  • To characterize the water/geo-chemical environment as a function of depth in the
  • shallow subsurface;
  • To study the surface environment and identify hazards to future human missions;
  • To investigate the planet’s subsurface and deep interior to better understand the evolution and habitability of Mars.

ExoMars will consist of an orbiter, a descent module and a six wheeled rover. The first European rover on Mars will carry a drill that can burrow up to 2 m into the Martian surface allowing its scientific instruments to analyse and sample the soil and search for mineral content, composition and traces of past and present life. Once the descent module carried out by the ExoMars spacecraft achieves landing on Mars surface safely, the rover, which will carry, in addition to the drill, Pasteur scientific instruments along with a sample processing system, will be responsible of the navigation and the exploration of Mars planet.

ExoMars is not the first planet robotic deployment mission since eight successful rovers have been deployed on the Moon and Mars over the previous space experiences, including crewed vehicles as well as remote controlled and autonomous robots. The Lunar Roving Vehicle developed by USA for the Apollo missions and the two Lunokhod lunar rovers developed by USSR were used to explore the Moon. The Mars Pathfinder was used the first Mars rover experiment, and the Mars Excursion Rovers Spirit and Opportunity continue to perform well. are two twin rovers landed on the opposite sides of Mars to search for rocks and soils that hold clues to past water activities on Mars. Future rover missions currently being planned include NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (launch in 2009) and the ESA's ExoMars mission (launch in 2013). Spirit and Opportunity neede to be told by human operators which moves to make next. Because each signal takes half an hour to be relayed to Mars and the results take half an hour to come back, this has made progress on the red planet very slow.

One major advantage that the ExoMars rover will have over Nasa's rovers is that it will be doted with enough intelligence to operate autonomously, making its own decisions about picking the best routes on his way of surface exploration.

Cranfield University, and EADS-Astrium have defined a program of research on "Robust navigation and path planning for ExoMars rovers". This is a three-year program undertaken by a PhD student, and involves original research work either developing entirely new techniques of study, or concerned with the application of novel and existing ideas in new ways.

The area of work proposed by EO group, DCMT, Cranfield University and EADS-Astrium is to be based around the increase of the rover mission autonomy for the ExoMars mission under the Aurora program. It concerns the investigation, the design and the validation of solutions to autonomous robotic navigation and trajectory planning using visual sensors with the affordable minimum of power.

The PhD project has the ambition to tackle autonomy issues, for the ExoMars rovers (and other future robotic exploration missions), in terms of accurate visual navigation and robust path planning concept by proposing innovative integrated methodologies able to be validated with space mission constraints. We will opt for approaches that look into how to improve the localization of the rovers by using robust visual natural features from the environment and then plan robot efficiently online trajectories which full fulfill mission requirements. These approaches will be linked to a robust optimization framework that will be applied to vision, path planning, low level control and estimation strategies guaranteeing the precision of the vehicle localization and motion with safe and power optimal trajectories and fault tolerance to navigation systems issues. The produced position estimates and generated robot trajectories will be robust to outliers and faults. The produced strategies will make sure to take robot kinematics and dynamic constraints in addition to the nature of the terrain where the rovers is progressing in his task. The concept and solutions proposed in this work will be useful not only for the ExoMars rover mission but also for all other missions where autonomy of deployed robotic systems is of crucial importance.

The research work will involve the development of (i) a framework (algorithms and associated design and analysis tools) for the development of robust navigation and path planner of the ExoMars rover, and (ii) a software validated prototype of the robust navigation and path planner.

The research work will incorporate aspects of the following areas of interest:

• Robotic Kinematics and dynamic modeling

• Navigation and robust estimation (based on Linfinty optimization)

• 3D vision (Robust stereo vision) and robust image processing

• Path Planning and decision making of autonomous agents.

• Fault diagnosis and reconfiguration.

• Real time validation taking into account space mission requirements.

Entry Requirements:

For this research studentship, we are seeking a talented graduate, having (or be expected to obtain) at least an upper second class honours degree (first class honours preferred), MSc or equivalent in electrical engineering or computer science. Good mathematical background and experience of robotics, vision, control and path planning, data/information fusion and real time systems would be most desirable.

Eligibility:

We are looking for a high quality European student. The studentship is for three years and provides payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate plus a £13,000 per annum (normally tax free) contribution to living expenses. For exceptionally good international students only fees will be considered for payement with no stipend allowed.

Profile

The objective of the European PhD in Socio-Economic and Statistical Studies is the scientific training of scholars who intend to dedicate themselves to academic careers or to serve as experts in national or international organisations where they are called to analyse and cope with social issues in an encompassing perspective. Didactic principle and explicit scientific aim is the development of knowledge regarding the interplay of economic and social phenomena based upon empirical research, adopting the most appropriate and advanced statistical methods. Sess.EuroPhD is thus guided by the socio-economic paradigm, as first proposed by Max Weber, and its application to empirical social science research. Disciplinary specialisation in the social sciences on the one hand and economics on the other tends to disregard the coherence underlying the structure and functionality of modern societies. The socio-economic paradigm is focussed on overcoming this disciplinary fragmentation when studying societies and the dynamics of interpersonal relationships.

The Sess.EuroPhD is directed towards analysing the interplay of economy and society in various research fields. As dissertation projects seven major areas of research, to be pursued in an interdisciplinary approach, are favoured:

Job description
The PhD project is within the area of membrane biophysics mainly the study of uptake mechanisms into the cell. Dendrimers are a unique class of nanostructured vehicles for drug and gene delivery into intracellular targets. They are unique given their monodispersity and multivalency, and can be used both by covalently attaching or encapsulating drugs.
Dendrimers produce high intracellular drug release and target efficiently tumors for
therapeutic and diagnostic applications. The surface chemistry of dendrimers influence their transport across epithelial and endothelial barriers. Dendrimer endocytocis via caveola/lipid rafts is markedly dependant on the dendrimer surface chemistry. The aim of this project is to gain information on why the surface chemistry of the dendrimer is so important for raft mediated endocytosis. In this project we will use both vesicles and supported bilayers as a simple model for cell membranes. We will combine various techniques, mainly dynamic light scattering and fluorescence microscopy, to unravel the mechanisms of dendrimer interaction with lipid bilayers. Changing the lipid composition we will be able to create domains similar to those in the cell membrane.
These techniques will allow us not only to visually inspect but also to quantify the motions of individual molecules within the lipid domains as they interact with dendrimers. The project will be a close collaboration between groups at the Faculties of Science with complementary expertise in surface chemistry and
biophysics.
Qualifications
We seek a talented and dedicated student with a M.Sc. degree of relevance to the project (chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, biology or similar). Candidates should have some experience/in depth knowledge in at least one of the techniques below:

Salary and employment
Salary is according to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the respective host organizations. For Ph.D.students presently about DKr. 22.345,17 per month before pension contribution, subject to change depending on qualifications.
The Ph.D. employment will be for a total period of 3 years.
The Ph.D. student will be enrolled at Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. The project involves collaboration with research partners at Faculty of Life Sciences.
